What's the easist way to root as of right now? - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello shift people
I plan on rooting my sister sshift today. She has the latest updates and now that there's root, whats the latest and easiest method to root? I see multiple different rooting threads. And there's no bricking right? Other then battery dieing while flashing radio? She'd kill me

Meaning she has 2.3?
If she accepted the OTA, there is no perm root.
If her Shift has 2.2, root with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976605

Yeah she has 2.3. I thought you guys just got perm root

They found an exploit for the boot which lets you downgrade to 2.2 then root and then flash a 2.3.3 rom. Check the dev thread several guides on how to

First, some background. I'm a seasoned Linux developer, having contributed to wireless drivers in kernel, as well as writing documentation on the wireless subsystem. Don't take this post as some newb hoping that it's as easy as crapping my pants and having the nurse change them for me... That having been said....
I'm working on getting my Alltel CDMA Hero rooted.
I've started this page: Redacted for now... I'm still a new user. Mods, will someone PM me, I'll provide the link, then they could insert it for me?
where I will document all I learn along the way, as well as outlining what root methods I've tried and why/how they failed. If there is any information I could add that people think would help others to find a rootable exploit on this phone, just comment here.

Have you tried the root that supposedly works for ALL HTC 2.1 Devices?
EDIT:
Figured I should link you after making that comment.

Yes, the bootloader that shipped with 2.1 on my alltel hero does not show up as an adb/fastboot device following that procedure. I'm working on documenting each root method I've tried and why they didn't work. I just can't post links yet...

2.6.29-HTC has patched this null ref exploit.
Ok after reading your page on what has been tried, you could try the 2.1 test. Ruu, also the newest .6 ruu, also has you tried the new root method from the evo/hero?

Any chance you can link me to those? I've tried searching and not had any luck. Is the new method the 'Root any 2.1 Android' one that requires you to fastboot then go to recovery, do a failed update.zip and replace it?

I've now tried the 2.1 test RUU, and the .6 RUU, the phone complained about both being an older version... looks like I need to find something exploitable in the actual phone :-/

I tried that and it did not work. It uses an exploit from a Sprint customisation that does not exist on the Alltel version.

Still alive... just moved and don't have internet available at home yet. I've begun trying to exploit the adb in recovery hole, but, alas, not had any luck. I've been working on a script to make the process much more automated in windows (the linux version works fine for me as far as what it is supposed to do/not do, etc)...
Not really getting anywhere so far.
On an aside, I read about a null pointer exception in tun.ko. I've been playing with metasploit and have successfully tcp/shelled my phone with it, but not figured out how to escalate the shell...
I will donate 20 to whoever roots the Alltel hero

So we got 40 so far anymore donations?

I'd pitch in $20. I'm still trying to find an escalatable exploit.

Rooting rogers

Hi everyone. I wana root my Rogers captivate im ready for it. But don't wana do it with superclick.I heard there is other way where u put the update.zip in ur SD root and go from there can someone direct me to download link and how to do it? Thanks
Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk
Try this App created by a forum member in the dev section (Download the ROGERS version):
http://baywolf.weebly.com/infodownload.html
It should automate a lot of your needs as far as root and ROM flashing. Make sure to read through the help Wiki located in the captivate dev section before flashing.
so this is not for rooting? im looking for that update.zip file that i can put on my sd and root it that way

it has that zip and a bunch of others. also check out the stock rom in my sig use it with AIO toolkit instead of the file he includes for flashing to stock. you will need it eventually.
also if you are on 2.2 already you will need the 3e "signiature verifacation" fix.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
and why dont you want to use superoneclick root? veresion 1.7 works great.
thanks that helped me 2

for me I couldn't get the AIO toolkit to work for me. So I had to use SuperOneClick, and it worked flawlessly. Less than 2 minutes to root.
However I use AIO for everything else, as it makes everything else so much easier (especially flashing). although for master clears I had to dl odin one-click, but that's trivial.
make sure to see which version of AIO you are downloading- bay_wolf has noted that version 2.6 is for rogers, and the most stable atm version to use for rogers.

Just bought Inspire, can I update safely?

I just purchased the Inspire 4G. *Love it so far* but I'm heading to the gym soon and before I root and try out CM7 tonight I wanted to OTA update from AT&T. Can I do this now and still safely root the device and put a ROM on it later today?
Yup. There is a multistep process for post-update Inspires. Either run the hack kit and then follow my post in the Dev section, OR use attn1's pd98img.zip (also after running the hack kit) to get root and then the ability to install ClockworkMod Recovery from ROM Manager.

Should I just hold off then if its easier to do on pre-updated Inspire?

[Q] Can u root Nexus S with superoneclick?

The title says it all
lol im noooooob
i liked the video vm
Yes..I can
Yes u can but u should to replace su.zip with the newer one that supports ICS.
Sent from my Nexus S
Ok Thanks!
I'm also a noob here and have never done this stuff before. I have a NS with 4.0.3 OTA non-rooted but want to use Google Wallet on it without using any other ROMs. I want to stick with 4.0.3 OFFICIAL.
So all I have to do is root with superoneclick and use the latest su.zip and this should be ok? What is the latest version of superoneclick and su that I should be using for my phone?
Thanks

Dude, also a noob, just came from watching the video.
Where do you get the newer su.zip that supports ICS?
And how do you do it?
Thanks
I am also searching for a way to root and unroot a Nexus S. Where do you find the updated su.zip? I searched through the SOC thread a little bit, but didn't find anything about that.

Go androidsu.com/superuser and download it!
Or search superuser on Nexus S forum.
You can get it from "[Q] Superuser binary updated to support ICS 4.0.3. RM!" thread on NS Q&A.
Hope it works!
Oooh, ok, that's the Superuser app . I thought it was something else. However, within the SuperOneClick\Root directory, there are 3 files.
Superuser.apk
su-v1
su-v2
I assume that I simply have to replace the Superuser.apk and the binary (su) with the newest ones. But which su file do I have to replace within the SOC\Root directory? su-v1 or su-v2?
---------- Post added at 12:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:05 PM ----------
Hm, well it seems it does not matter after all. SOC hangs at Step #7 when trying to root the device.
