Before I flash a custom ROM onto my untouched Xoom UK Wi-Fi only how do I backup its current state? At the moment it is on stock 3.1.
How do I flash a custom recovery such as CWM Rogue Recovery v1.1.1 or ClockworkMod 3.2.0.0? Can I just install clockworkmod from the market and flash it from there or does it have to be flashed via fastboot?
Which is the best 3.2 ROM at the moment which has overclocking enabled?
P.S. I've already read many threads and have an idea what to do next but I just want to make sure before I do anything!

By the way, I really love the configuration in my signature. I love everything that Team Tiamat has done, to date. And they are terrific, helpful guys. The Team Rogue are great too, just going in a little different direction, but their kernel works with the Tiamat Rom, in otherwords, they all cooperate and we win.

Since I was an android virgin until just before Christmas, I'm still trying to get to grips with all the cool stuff that can be done.
I've rooted the phone and unlocked the bootloader. Everything else is currently stock.
I don't want to go to Clockwork recovery, or Cyanogen/MoDaCo ROMs. Not yet. I'm still savouring the "Google Experience".
However, I have three questions (which may turn into many more ) about flashing new kernels, and I don't want to clog up any specific kernal thread with noob questions.
1) Does flashing a kernel wipe the whole phone the way unlocking the bootloader did?
2) If you're running stock ROM with new kernel, will you still pick up OTA updates as before?
3) How do you get the original kernal back if you don't like the new one (or if it just goes totally tits up)?

1) No, you should not wipe anything before flashing a kernel. You should however do a NANDroid backup.
2) You should be able to but it will wipe your kernel.
3) Restore your backup from #1

flashing a kernel doesnt wipe your phone, it simply replaces whatever kernel is in your phone at the moment.

Ok. So all the NANDroid guides I've seen here start with ADB and Fastboot (which I remember doing when I rooted the phone), but then they say about flashing alternative recovery images... is that necessary? Or is that what the fastboot thing was?
I've just checked and ADB still works, so if fastboot is an alternative recovery image, am I good to take a NANDroid backup, and if so, how do I do that?
If Fastboot is not an appropriate recovery image, do I need Clockwork Recovery (is that different to the "CWM" I see mentioned around here?)?
The Nexus S guide I read said that there was a NANDroid option in the Clockwork Recovery. Now this isn't in my recovery options, obviously, but I assume with ADB, a command prompt and a few instructions, I can do it manually. Maybe.

Ok, scratch the NANDroid questions. NANDroid is a backup tool contained in the Clockwork Mod recovery image.
Using Fastboot, you can boot from the recovery image without flashing it (using this guide here), so I've still got whatever recovery image I got when I did Paul's rooting technique, but have booted into CWM once to do the NANDroid backup.
I may flash CWM later, that's a task for another day.
So. Now I've got the backup (and thus, booting from that image again later, the ability to restore from it), I can try flashing the kernel. Which I can do from the regular recovery image.

To flash from the stock recovery you must rename files update.zip just FYI. I've said it before and I'll say it again; there are no possible negative repercussions from flashing a non-stock recovery image.
Apparently it was unsigned, so the stock recovery wouldn't do anything with it.
Back in CWM and it worked fine. I may have to flash that, it's damned useful...
So now I have a new kernel!

Yes, you can flash back. Not only can you but depending on how you did flash the recovery the phone may revert it on your behalf. I know mine has several times, like any time I reboot. There's ways to stop it from doing that but I don't mind.
To get the stock recovery back if it isn't automatically restoring means flashing an NAND from the Dev section here.

I'm very interested in getting supercurio's voodoo sound and ext4 mod on my Nexus S but I don't need/want the overclocked frequencies and other stuff included on most of the kernels out there. You guys know any kernel that I could flash to get those and keep my stock fequencies?

I use overclocked with voodoo and setcpu...you can keep it set to 1000 and not over the stock limit.

If you flash the Trinity max kernel and do not adjust the clock you will have everything your asking for. This kernel boots at stock and has Voodoo and ext4 built in.

I am very confused as to whether or not it is possible to go from my rooted US Xoom Wifi only running rooted stock 3.1 directly to the Manta Ray rom, or do I go to stock rooted 3.2 first? Whatever the case, could someone link me to the correct procedure? I cannot find something that matches my exact setup, and the Rom's thread is unclear whether I have to update first. Yes, I know, this is probably a noob question, but I am pretty new to rooting in general.

Since you're rooted your bootloader is already unlocked
Just flash CWM 3.2.0.0 RC4
Wipe from CWM
Load Tiamat.
It should be that easy.

If you're downloading the Team Tiamat Mantay Ray 2.0.1 ROM - Yes, it includes everything.
You will boot into CWM recovery 3.2.0.0 RC4, do you have that installed? If not, please flash it first.
Then you flash the rom from CWM itself, after booting into CWM. Have the rom zip package on the flash card.
If you need more explicit instructions, they can be pieced together from the CWM thread and the Tiamat rom thread

wipe first (from recovery menu option)
then load the rom .img

Here is the deal. Got my wifi only xoom (USA) when it was first released. Rooted shortly thereafter....one click method. Installed the tiamat 2.6.36.3 kernel. This prevented me from updating from android 3.0.1...which I'm still using. I didn't care until recently. My xoom is starting to act weird. Now xoom says I'm not rooted. Long story short. In the most simple terms (not good at this stuff). How can I catch up to the lastest version of android which I believe is 3.2? Thanks in advance.

Maybe there's an easier way, but you could go back to stock -- fastboot flash stock wifi images from moto dev (no need to relock, though) and let it OTA update to at least three-point-two. Then you can install a custom CWM recovery and flash a rom or kernel.

Do you have CWM recovery installed and have the use of your sdcard? If so, what version do you have? You actually may be able to flash the Tiamat Moray Rom which is the latest version and should give you the update. But you need the most recent solarnz cwm recovery R4c and you will need to do a wipe data/factory reset in recovery before flashing the rom from your external micro sdcard.

First of all, I'm new in here, so I don't know much stuff.
I recently got my transformer and wanted to check out the Android Revolution HD rom. Before flashing it, I made a backup using CWM.
I tried the rom (before installing it, yes, I did the superwipe thing) but didn't like it because the gps issues. I wanted to go back to stock and did again a superwipe and then made a restore from the backup.
When I rebooted my tablet, the configuration screen came up and started freezing and rebooting. I tried re-flashing the backup but it kept going on with the crashing and rebooting stuff.
I've been searching far and wide on how to go back to stock and I have found just the nvflash but my serial starts with B70 so I know I can't use it.
I decided to reflash Android HD Revolution because it's the only way the tablet will work, but I would love to go back to stock so I can use the gps properly.
So, Is there any way I can go back to stock? If this means something, I live in South America, so I assume I need a WW thing or whatever that means

Reboot into CWM recovery
Clear data and flash ROM. You can use Titanium backup to save apps and data if you don't want to lose anything.

In my understanding that is not a (complete) ROM but just an OTA update for a stock rom. Cannot be used to replace another ROM.
That's the same thing I understood from the ROM flashing rules.
I guess there's no stock rom that I can flash? It can't be (or can it?)

Won't matter what stock ROM you are on. Then flash or reflash cwm recovery, reboot to recovery and flash the above zip that Sean1984 posted.
