MY Captivate Retirement [Official] (Don't be a retard samsung didnt kill the cappy) - Captivate General

Hey guys, it has been a lot fun here on the captivate forum for the last year! I never thought getting my first android device would lead to what has basically become a second job.
Thanks to everyone that has kept me motivated, and to all the haters for hating!
To all of you moving to the Galaxy S2 when it comes out on AT&T, I will see you there!

Thanks a lot for all the hard work put into Captivate.

Thanks a lot for all the hardwork and all those stable roms......!
And as far as these people are concerned they are never going to let you rest even when you move to the S2.....!

Just want to let you know that since I found Cognition (In the 2.somethings) I haven't used any other ROM at all...
Love your work... if finances permit I'll be following you to the SII
Thanks for all you do!

Thanks alot DG you're awesome! See you on the SGS2 forums as soon as I get mine! You make the best ROM's and I can't wait to see what you've been up to with the SGS2. Till then...
P.S.- sorry about the whole KH4 mess. I guess my sources were tainted.

Haha good luck man, thanks for all your hard work! I might grab a GSII

DG thanks
Great ROMS, have a couple of questions...
I dropped (and broke) the display on my Euro sgs2. I am going to order a replacement panel, but not sure how to get a genuine samsung replacement. Cannot find anything online. Got any advice?
Do you have any insight on when the ATT version will be released? did I miss the release date...cannot find it online
Running Cog on the old standby Captivate

I remember when I got my captivate on Christmas, the 1st rom I ever flashed on it was cognition and I was in love, hopefully when I get rid of my crappy evo 3D I'll join you in the SGS2 forums

I appreciate all your work DG. This Cappy has been running Cog since I bought the damn thing. Can't wait to get my hands on that GSII and give it some DG love!

Well, the SGS2 is supports LTE, at least the AT&T version will, and they are launching LTE this sunday(18th) and they said the SGS2 would come in the third quarter, which ends at the end of this month.
They always release big phones on Sunday, so that means we will get it on the 18th or the 25th.

I'll just have to wait and see if their LTE coverage will extend into my area. I'm usually on the fringe of the major carriers' big rollouts. I am also holding out hope that we'll see a Galaxy Note here in the US.

Confirmed Sprint Hero EclairUpdate

Did you know your Sprint Hero will be getting Eclair early next year? Well...now you do! Happy Friday ladies and gents
I don't think anyone was questioning if. Its when.
yea, i wasnt ever concerned whether we were going to get the update, but rather the time frame in which we would.
confirmatory tweets are always welcomed though
Looks like it won't be for several months.

Might as well have just said "it'll come out eventually", haha.
Hahahaha
Lets see 1H 2010, ususally the updates run about 2 time periods behind when they say that they will be available... so looking somewhere around 1H2011...
By that time, the development work for 2.1 here in XDA-Developers will already be done and all of us will be looking forward to the next release.
I wonder why the Moment is being held up on the 2.0 release, when it's just vanilla Android. I really didn't think they were going to give us that broad of a timespan though. I figured January would be the latest that we'd have 2.0. So unless Google makes some changes, there's a good chance we won't be using their newest apps for a long time (officially anyway). By the time we get 2.0, Droid will be running 4.5 .
as long as we get 2.1 here first and i can brag about it for a whole before anyone else has it, im happy lol.

But, thanks for the update...I really wanna try some of these apps that need Eclair!
1H 2010? Really? Talk about vague. I may go back to big red for the Passion if we don't see it very soon.
I love Sprint, and my Hero, but let's be real.... almost every Android phone on the market will be LIGHT YEARS ahead of us if it takes more than a couple months at most.
While I agree that it isn't cool to toy around with us...specially since we'll still be behind when the update hits most likely. But still...I don't think that not getting an update warrants hopping the fence haha.
but then again, I cannot even really use that since I "hopped the proverbial fence" after my girlfriend dumped me and haven't looked back...if you get my drift haha

I think it's a perfect reason to hop the fence, show sprint that we want our updates, we can't do anything on 1.5 .. no nav, no goggles, nothing new and exciting, i'm fed up and i would rather start over with a new phone.. than wait for sprint to get off their lazy behinds and feed us something that should have been out already

Or keep your eyes peeled for the 2.0-ish roms we have in the works here, there's a decent chance we'll be fully up and running by the time the other phones get their official update. But by all means, "stick it to the 'man'..." and cancel your service. It's your prerogative. I personally don't see the need. I like my sprint service and I like my sprint hero. /shrug

See, I don't think Sprint will have an update for us until about May (I just have a feeling on this). In light of that, I'm definitely looking at the development on the 2.0/2.1 ROMs in the other threads...those look like they will be ready way before Sprint updates us.

Is Infuse 4G Development Dead or what?

Kinda curious what's going on here. Seems since mid-June there hasn't been much progress made on Infuse ROMs\mods. Is it that the phone is being somewhat swept under the rug in the shadow of the SGS II or is there just a bit of a waiting game to see if we'll get Gingerbread, or is the phone just not popular enough to develop for? From those I've talked to at @T&T, they say it's still their hottest phone as of July 1... so not sure why so quiet on here. Maybe it's just that since it's great out of the box people aren't as compelled to work on it?

You should really take your trolling elsewhere.
Saying "Use the search button" is the most pointless response ever. From someone who has 1 THANK YOU it's not a shock, but it's super annoying that you're trying to boost your post count with this idiocy.
Go somewhere else.
trolling? boost my post count?! that's the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard. has it ever occured to you that some people read more than they post? that may help you to understand why you started this thread in the first place.

EL OH EL... Development isn't dead... It's just pointless to do any further development at this point, with a GB leak right around the corner, either with a leak, or the Rogers Infuse.

And I have little respect for those who talk to hear themselves talk, so sorry I can't stand people like him. Look at his posts. He attacks every response.
I do think it's a combination of both the things you mentioned - a shadow of the SGS 2 coming up, as well as Gingerbread official release for the Infuse releasing anytime now. Even though I recently brought mine and personally love this phone, I am super curios to see SGS 2 in every day use. That massive home button format that Samsung has implemented, and done away with the search button which I've barely used 2wice ever, is sure to make it a better experience.
But I do think it's a bit premature to say that Development is dead for the Infuse. The 3 main ROM's are still being tweaked and fine tuned, voodoo sound and lag fix has been implemented, and some sort of stop-gap functional hulu is also working for some who've tried. All this for a phone that's barely a Month and a half old. Not bad I'd say.

Yeah, I guess I'm just comparing the experience to my last phone, the HTC Inspire 4G, which was a massive developer project right at release. I remember having 10 roms to chose from, half being gingerbread, a week after release, hehe.

whoa whoa.. cool your jets turbo! nobody attacked you. and where do you get off saying i attack every response? all i've done was defend myself in this thread. and i think i speak for most people who grow tired of seeing the same questions asked in multiple threads.. this is old news. your question has been asked many times already. my initial response was not meant to be offensive, but had you taken my advice you would've found your answer.
not to many simple features that we dont have already, other features may take a lot more development. you can make requests if you can think of some. i have been able to run the same rom for weeks without the obsessive need to flash the next new thing. i havent had that since andromeda on the captivate and that ended with the release of 2.3.3 i9000 based roms.
if we could get a kernel like glitterballs had on the captivate that used gpu hardware acceleration on the home screen and in all apps that would be cool but he never posted sources and it seemed to have issues with errors on ext4 but worked great if converted to jfs. i had my phone underclocked with that kernel and the battery lasted for days!. it also had unmatched boot up times.

lol you beat me to it.
I'm sure Bradbusa only said that because, from posts, devs are holding off because it would be pointless to develop these roms at this point. Devs have said in a few threads that they'd hate to work on too much, just for them to have to re-do everything for gingerbread.
Bradbusa could have offered a bit more, but I can say my first thought was to type what he said when I first saw the thread. Glad he stepped in that landmine and I didn't.

Patience young grasshopper.
Maybe I'm just too new to Android - but the Infused ROM is a fine piece of work that leaves you wondering, where to next? Others are probably right in that Gingerbread is the next step - a step much easier if we just wait for a leak or the Rogers phone.
I'm just hoping our devs stick around that long It seems like Android users upgrade phones pretty quickly...
Our devs will stick around. Everyone just needs to stop asking for ETA's and posting threads just like this one. Learn to chill out and wait OR learn to code and help the development process.
Have a happy 4th!

No freaking out!!!

So guys I now have my SGS III, and I may be in and out for a while, and not giving 100% in here for a little while.
I have NOT gotten rid of the Atrix 2, and I still LOVE this device and will be working on it for a while.
In fact I have a treat for you guys. I will be uploading the system.img of my SGS III to my dropbox, I will link it here in the dev section when it is uploaded, so that any of our ROM devs in here can start porting it, over, I would hope...
By the way I am still finishing up the all in one script for every one, and it should be ready for testing later this week or over this weekend. It will be for a batch file for windows, a shell script for linux and mac users.
Bittersweet news... But, thank you for all of your pioneering work on the A2!! Hope we still see you around here now and again (though understandably less frequent). Also, thanks in advance for the sgs3 system.img!
And when you're relaxing in the metaphorical bathtub with your new Sammy, and you have that Archimedes moment with the A2 bootloader... do let us know, won't you? Until then, we'll keep up the good fight.
Indeed, Jim, you are very much a highly appreciated "resident expert" here on the ATRIX 2 side, but I fully I understand you're wanting to play with the new toy -and, admittedly, I am a bit envious of you! But, as alteredlikeness stated, we'll keep plugging away in your semi-absence.
You've been an invaluable resource for n00bs and developers and everyone in between, and for that I (we) thank you yet again for all you've done for us all!
Can't wait to hear back from you periodically, and wish you the best of luck with the SGS3 -I know you will enjoy tearing it apart and making the development of it nothing short of amazing!

Oh I am not going anywhere.... I am just focusing SOME of my dev efforts on this new device which is not even officially in stores until Thursday....
Heck 916x10, pre-ordered his at BB on 6-5 and he still does not have his yet, so....
I am still working on the A2, I have not dropped everything that i was working on, to just focus a short period on the SGS 3. I am just for the next several weeks to a month, going to make myself a little more scarce on this forum, while I get my new kernel(s) and CM9 fully up over there, for the SGS 3. I already have a pre-alpha version of CM9 and 2 different accelerated kernels that I am going to be testing this week.... The SGS 3 is just so easy to develop for.
There is still so much to be done over here, and there have been some great strides made with kexec by the CyanogenMod devs, and some of the guys I am working with over in the SGS3 forum. I want to look into some of this for my next hack over here, in a few weeks.
We have been honored to have your insight, talent and patience.
See you soon, God speed my good man!

Very nice. And I'm sure you'll open a lot of eyes over in the sgs3 forum..
I happened to pop in there today to see what they've (now you've) got going on over there as far as development, and I ran across one if your posts and noticed you got yourself root already while others are still struggling with that.
Also, a while ago I read somewhere that Samsung makes more "hacker friendly" Androids, so to speak - does that hold some sort of truth to it? If so, we should've kept my wife's Infuse (which we traded in for another A2)..

Jim,
I'll look forward to seeing you on these forums hopefully, from time to time. It's a ton of fun with you around, like some big bodyguard type, to keep the riff-raff out, and the regulars in shape.
If I'm ever in the Dallas area, I'll try to get in touch, maybe have a beer. I'm slow moving, but I'm still working on some of the big ideas I've had, with documentation, and some kind of system for matching junior assistants with senior developers, as a method of training, and creating efficiency in getting work done -- but I thought, maybe expand it out to all motorola devices, so that if the petition doesn't succeed, perhaps enough dev's working together can find strategies to circumvent the bootloader lockdown.
I'm looking forward to your script ;-)
Best Regards,
Paul

[No Real Issue-Related Topic] Sure Is Quiet Around Here

Hey gang,
Maybe I'm just growing weary of watching the Olympics, trying not to get too hyped up over who can row a boat faster, or win at water polo (those little caps they wear creep me out, anyone else?), but in just checking in here as I always do, as often as I do, I notice that I can almost hear crickets chirping. And, it's got me thinking as to why...
Now, don't get me wrong, this community is by far one that I am certain that I couldn't imagine being where I am without them -yes, you guys, all of you! But, quite frankly, only by the good graces and amazing talent of the devs and hackers here (you know who they are, and if you're one of them, no amount of Thanks Button mashing will ever express my gratitude to you), the ATRIX 2 forum has see a calming of waters.
I like that. And, knowing that it was all result from these guys, working their "free" time to get us (well, I never flashed the leak, but you see where I'm going with this) out of the jam that was subsequent of the ICS 'dreaded' leak fiasco. What truly awesome devs we have here, and believe me, I've poked around into other forums and they don't hold a dime to our guys.
I suppose where I'm headed with this is just a gigantic thank you to everyone who works so hard, has such passion, and with patience and talent, help the rest of us knuckleheads out with any problem that we may face. Please, feel free to chime in here, and let our guys know how appreciated they truly are, aside from "clicking their button".
So, it's quiet in here now. It has been so for a few days, or week or so. And, like I said, the only reason for the is because the dev/hack team we have here is next to none, and has delivered us from "evil" (a.k.a.: The "Dreaded" ICS leak) and will undoubtedly do so again. It's quiet here because we have resolve given to us by individuals who care, who seriously kick ass, and who are devoted to our community.
It's nice to see that quietness. Though, a bit unfamiliar, it can only be attributed to our guys, those that worked night and day, to give us this "calm". I do suspect things to liven up, once the official ICS release finds it's way to our phones, but regardless we can all take solace in knowing we're all in the best possible hands!
Thank you, all of you.
You're work is something immeasurable, and can never be thanked enough.

+10 Was thinking the same thing the other day..... Greatly appreciate everyone on here from the devs, devolpers, regular faces (well avi's) and those good with Q&A!!!!! O and I bet you know what all the quiet is for BIG things are on the way ..... Let the team rest up from the little storm of the leak and get ready for wave 2.....

Hi, I kind of took a sanity break over the last few weeks, so that is part of it; I can talk a lot!
But mostly, ICS is around the corner, so no one is really doing much with GB. once ICS really hits hard, I mean full on OTA, it will go nuts. once we get a SOAK image, there should be a bulge in activity, then it will take off with the OTA.
Believe me, there will be plenty of roms and hacks once full ICS comes out.
p.s. Devs get on IRC, I need to talk and get caught up. LOL
It's the calm before the storm. You know before the great ics debacle that's coming.

Well put. All the ics stuff that has happened on here has wore me out. Either that or working 12 hour days.

One thing, is that the devs are there to help. In the community of my old phone, the devs would never answer your PM's or reply to your threads. Here it's the opposite.

agreed, the community here really is something amazing. I can't thank all the devs, especially Jim, enough for what they have taught me
Agreed! When I first got my phone... I didn't even know what rooting was.... about 9 months later I know 100% more! Thanks to all of the devs, I learned the do's and dont's of Android (even though I make some STUPID mistakes sometimes!)

Goodbye A2 Community....

Hey everyone,
Tonight I used my phone upgrade and upgraded to the Atrix HD. It's been nice knowing all of you guys here in the forums, and I'm certainly going to miss you. (the ones I like anyway.... )
Big thanks to the developers in this community for putting in so much hard work for this phone. You have been wonderful to all of us. :good:
Cheers mate, best of luck to you!

Gutsy is how I roll. Plus the Atrix HD really competes with the high end devices since it has the same Snapdragon S4 as the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X. Ran a Quadrant benchmark test and pulled a 4,750 without any real customizations yet. Also, this display...truly gorgeous, one to behold!

Really? Was that needed?
I'ts a classic "pun". I don't think it needs to be taken out of context.
So let's not start something, that isn't there to begin with

While you're still in return time look at the Sony Xperia Ion. Screen and camera makes Note, OneX etc look like a joke!

I'll pretend that was just a joke.
In all seriousness though, I have nothing against anyone and am more than happy to still help you guys out here with any questions/problems you might have. Feel free to shoot me a PM whenever.
You're leaving us just as I have updated the OP of my guide thread for n00bs! I was going to include you in the directory of Senior Members for the A2 forums, but now you're boating on us...
Anyhow, good luck with the new phone, I hope everything works out for you, and that you really enjoy it!

Apex,
You're more than welcome to add my name to the list anyway in case anyone has questions/problems. I may not have the phone anymore, but I would still be more than happy to help out in any way that I can.

Okay, I'll put you on the directory. I may have to "tiny url" up some links, as I'm pushing the 30,000 character limit on this one!
Torn between hijacking a thread and cluttering up the main page with a new one - chose the hijack. I'm so sorry, MagicXB!
I also am leaving, after such a short time here! Speaking of the Xperia ion, that's the one I am going with. AT&T finally got tired of throwing A2's my way to fix my reception problems and gave me a free warranty upgrade. I chose the ion for a lot of reasons, and I think I'll be happy with it.
I got really into following the community here and have been excited to follow the projects that are ongoing. The dev community here is excellent, and I'm convinced good things will be around for this phone for awhile. Unfortunately, with AT&T getting rid of support for this phone, I feel like you'll see people like me dropping off - they won't have any more A2's to give out!
Thank you all for your help and time.

Going with the Xperia Ion seems to be quite risky to me. The hardware itself looks quite beautiful but it launched with Gingerbread onboard, and in this day and age of countless phones coming out I would be worried about it even seeing ICS (much less anything after that).
To be honest, I obsessed over this decision for awhile. The One X was my main competitor, but I don't like not having expandable storage, and I've had really bad experiences with HTC phones before. The Atrix HD is pretty, but it just didn't feel right to me. And the Galaxy S3 looks like a cheap piece of plastic from my childhood and I hate the Samsung UI (not to mention the off chance that Apple manages to run Samsung into the ground).
ICS is great, but it's not everything. Sony has been really good about updating older phones to ICS and I have no doubt this one will get it soon enough. And if it doesn't, the Sony UI incorporates some of the more important elements of ICS already. I think it's a really nice phone, well made and I'm hoping I'll enjoy it. That said, I'm sure there are more than enough people here who think I'm insane, lol .
