i have been browsing this forum, and i haven't seen anyone mention that they have a preferred data plan.
however, tmobile does offer a $20 preferred android unlimited plan. it can be acquired by calling tmobile retentions department and just asking nicely!
this plan satisfies the data requirement that is needed for the $200 upgrade price on the g2x.
hope this was a help!
More details? I pay 59.99 a month for 1000 minutes and unlimited text/data 4g with the even more plus plan. Would I benefit?
Is it still throttled?
When I was at Tmobile, the store manager said I have to get the 4G plan to get 4G data. I told him I already got Android plan and he insisted to change the plan to 4G. He said there is no different in price (My Android plan was $25 )
Congrats. You've just been throttled to 2GB.

Yep! That store clerk was a moron. There is no such thing as a "4G plan". All there is is the old 5gb cap and the new 2gb cap. You got screeewwwwed.

Im also on the same 19.99 android data plan. It was given to me after complaining about the 4G/3G coverage in my area.
And data is still throttled after 5GB to a speed of dial up.
I called and had the $20 preferred android added on. The first time I called, the rep insisted on renewing my contract to 2 years, I declined, and called back an hour later. The 2nd rep added on and the whole conversation took less than 3 minutes.
Just want to throw that out there, so you don't renew your contract.
I signed up for the $60 1500 minutes + unlimited text special, and then the unlimited (5GB) data for $20.
A few days later they switch the same plan around to "unlimited" everything for the same combined price ($80)
I tried switching but my data plan would change to $30 instead of $20 for some reason.

No.
In fact you would end up on the 2gb throttle at that point.

Im confused. The $80 includes unlimited data, right? I mean thats how it was when I went in today. 79.99 for unlimited text/talk/data
Oh they'll say unlimited data. I haven't seen a single "unlimited" data plan without some sort of throttling to 2G built in.

Not true.. I've been on the preferred plan for months. I have used more than 2gb of data in one month.(I used 3.86gb last month) and I didnt get throttled

Sometimes they will throttle you, sometimes they wont. Is it really easy to go over 2GB without even using the tethering/hotspot capabilities?

Yes, true. Go look at their website. They started the unlimited everything for 79.99 right before the G2x launched and suckered people into a 2gb throttled plan.
I, unfortunately, am one of them.

Very easy if you're into youtube or slacker radio on high quality
This looks pretty good to me, but I have two questions:
I just got the g2x, and it's my first android phone so I'm not too familiar with what's a normal amount of data usage. If I will just be using my phone for web browsing and twitter and facebook with light photo uploading, and occasional youtube, will 2gb be enough? Right now I get 200 mb.....so anything would be better.
Also, is there a special number I should call for retentions, or do I just call customer service and ask about the plan?

Tmobile.c om has a meter at which they calculate data usage under different scenarios. Give that a try. From my personal experiences with data usages on a smart phone, 200mb is not nearly enough to be satisfied. Watching youtube for 10-15 mins can already take up a chunk of your limited 200mb. If you're going to stick with that plan then i suggest you use wifi whenever you're able to.
I don't think there is a specific number for their retention lines. You can just dial 611 on your tmobile activated cell and ask to be transferred to retentions.
I am currently on a preferred data plan for $20 and unlimited family text for $10. I'm not to sure what they would give for a single plan. Ask about these deals.
Good luck. I hope you can get it all worked out fine!
I am confused????
I am going from a G1 with unlimited text/data , So what happends when I get my phone and put my sim card in does it magically stop the unlimited data/text plan???
I am new to posting but been a long time reader.
waiting for my new phone to get here tommorrow and I am actually off from work tommorrow so I have a long time to get to know my new phone.
Upgrading from a rooted G1.

Welcome and happy posting,
If you didn't change your plan then everything will stay exactly the way it was.
I also came from a rooted G1 and am using the old sim. Everything is working well.
I just got a sensation. Currently I still have the G1unlimited data plan. Do I need to pay more to get the 4g speeds? I think my data speeds were better with my nexus one. I don't want to call tmo because I would expect them to say "oh, you have a 4g phone, you need the 4g plan to go with it. Would you like the 2 TB plan or the 5 TB plan? That'll be $40/month"
No, you dont
I still have my data plan from my touch pro 2 and im getting 4g so i guess no

The same as they said. No you don't need another plan to get 4g speeds. I'm on an old android plan and getting great speeds.
I called T-mobile and got the 4g data plan and it was the same price as the mytouch 3g plan I had before. I have the 5gb unlimited plan.

Still rock'in the G1 Dataplan here, worked great with my Nexus One, and now with my Sensations.
+1 to the G1 Unlimited Data.
I was thinking of asking the same question. Nice to see positive responses.
I'm on a G1 unlimited data 400txt or$25. It transferred no problems. I ordered my Sensation over the phone and discussed the data/txt package and data caps openly with the representative. They will let you keep it, with a 5gb cap.

That means that they're not letting you keep it. A 5gb cap is not unlimited. You're paying for 5gb of data per month, not unlimited.

Yeah I grandfathered my em+plan with unlimited web, bt what they did is they changed this to 4g web in the system so I now get 4g speeds bt now its capped at 5gb which I ain't tripping much about..haven't used that much data yet bt I'm planning on doin it this bill cycle to c if I will actually get throttled since my friend got to that cap n they sent him a notice, by even after goin over his speeds didn't change

Thanks for the replies. I don't have a data cap on my and I'm not wanting to take the step unless it is absolutely necessary.
Last month I used 6GB of data and that was pretty hard to do. When I decided to do it I had 5 days left on my billing cycle and was just under a gig. It was pretty dificult to use that much data in such a short time.

I have this same plan w/txt...what 4G speeds are you getting?
I'm the OP. The best I've been able to get is .84 Mbps down, .71Mbps up.
I'm getting 2.80 Mbps down and 1.68 Mbps up at last look...but I expect more from 4G!
Yeah, it's pretty lame. I'd be happy with 1Mbps down and .5up.
Where are you located with such slow speeds? Is anybody else there getting better results?
Home is worthless for 4g for me. Im constantly on my wifi. But at work I get 4-5 bars and get around 5mpbs up and 1.5 down. Driving home, I get constant full 5 bars and get 6-8mpbs.
Same for me, those speed I mentioned earlier were from home pretty slow. I tried it from work and was able to get 2 up and 1.5 down so I'm ok with those speeds. I'm still not blown away but it's a little better than I had.
no because android data plans are all the same, now they just limit your plan to 5gb.
is anyone using it??? for APN internet2 bypass throttle data speed.
does this method work?
It used to. Tmo fixed it. There is no workaround for the throttle.

Hahahahaha..... Oh cell corporations.....you make me laugh.

lol sorry, i wouldn't waste $10 on 200mb. even if this phone was rooted, there is no way around the throttle, they blocked it. it worked on my mt4g and g2x and then it stopped.

Prob for people only websurf and youtube?
how about internationa version?? not the T-mobile version?
I have the $10 plan (2 actually.. family plan) and think its great. We are light data users and love not being forced in to more expensive data plans (vs. any other carrier) and the fact that we still get data even after the 200MB.. it just might be slower. Perfect for us. Its *THE* reason we are TMo customers. At $30 dataplans, my corporate discount would be much better on Verizon.
I'm using the 200mb plan - honestly I'm on WiFi all day at work and home. Last month I used 5 mg...I feel like I need to set aside time to actually use it.
200mb wouldn't last me 2 days... perhaps not even 1 lol!
anyway, you guys do know about the prefered android unlimited plan right?
5gb cap, $20 a month.
so does international version of Sensation can do that bypass?
I use 200MB in 1 day. pff
That is the plan I am on now. I'm trying to bust pass the limit to see just how slow the restriction is. Right now I am using 2g and I find that fine, so I am going to wait and see.

I'm really interested in seeing how slow the throttled speeds are. Like, are they slower than EDGE? I think I can deal with it. I got the 200mb data.
When I bought my phone there was a frequent questions pamplet on the reps counter that mentioned reduced speed was 2g or edge (or 2g edge I can't remember exactly). At the time I just thought it was nice for them to specify. Sorry I can't remember exactly, my memory kinda sucks

I also have the old "unlimited data" plan. When I upgraded phones. They tried to switch me. For years I've been able to keep my data plan. When I got the sensation. I had the rep repeat to me what plans I had. It was over the phone and conversation was recorded. I had him repeat to me my plans and he said "looks like you have unlimited data" and i told him "I have what?" and he said "Unlimited data" I said Thank you and to please note it on the account.
I got a text for throttled down connection. Called back in. Spoke with rep, tech, than supervisor. Had him repeat my plan. "Unlimited data"
I ended the conversation saying no where does "Unlimited data" says you can limit my speed or anything for that fact. Supervisor agreed and took off throttle. everything is back to normal and have no noticed any data issues or speed issues.

No offense, but I have to call BS... I have heard hundreds of reports from reps and end-users alike that there is no switch to turn off throttling. Moreover, it's clear as day in the terms of service that they will throttle as soon as you hit your data limit. Additionally, you have truly unlimited data, the first 200mb, 2gb, 5gb, or 10gb at full speed, and then the remainder of the month at dial-up speeds. All plans are unlimited, you are just paying for how much full speed service you want before you get throttled.
If you were right, we could just pay $10 for 200mb and then complain about the throttle when it kicks in and have full 4g speed all month for $10. Would be nice, but you're dreaming.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
Nope. no BS. when you get a "200mb plan" that's your plan. 200mb. Unlimited is just that. Unlimited. They've changed data plans around and have put in many tiers. None of which are "Unlimited"
Just glad I get to keep my old plan. this was from like sidekick 2 or whatever it was. I know I can't tether however. That is an add on apparently. some how they know...

I love that plan! I have it for me and the Mrs. It's what keeps us with TMobile.
I currently have a Epic 4G Touch over on Sprint with their craptasic unlimited data. I'm lucky to speed test 5~30kbps on 3G, yes you read that correctly. I've been a 10+ year Sprint customer and the more and more smart devices they get, the slower the network becomes.
I think it might be time to jump ship!
So, my buddy just had the same issues as me, slow 3G. He flashed a Verizon PRL file to his phone and well, lets just say got out of his contract without paying an ETF.
He just picked up the Skyrocket and could NOT be happier. He came over to show the phone to me the other night and and his data speed was amazing! Unfortunately, we have no 4G where I live so I'm stuck on 3G but both his LTE and 3G were blazing.
He has a 3GB a month LTE packages that is metered for the LTE but he claims the 3G is unlimited. Now, pretty much everyone in my office but myself has an AT&T iPhone and they are all saying they do NOT have anything unlimited and that my friend is mistaken. I'm trying to figure out which is correct because I'm thinking about picking up a Skyrocket this week. Is it different between say an iPHone and an Android?
Thanks!
They throttle you after 5 gb if you are on a grandfathered unlimited plan. If you are on a tiered plan you dont get throttled and if you go over your limit they add another whatever gb you had to your bill. So if you had 3gb for $30 and you go over it, they give you another 3gb and charge you another $30

So then my friend is full of sh__... He is a brand new AT&T customer as of about two weeks ago and he is very insistent on the fact that the only metered data is the LTE, the 3G is unlimited.
He seems very sure that when his LTE is out, he can just jump on 3G and use that at no additional cost until his cycle resets.
I thought that sounded wrong.

If he's a NEW customer then he should not have ANYTHING unlimited. Which means he will be most surprised when he get's his phone bill and has overage charges, because they won't throttle the limited plans. He will still get 4G once he exceeds his data limit, AT&T will just start charging overage charges.

Straight talk does for $45, but I wouldn't recommend them. You could always just try it though. BTW, it's not really unlimited, it's 2.5GB at high speed then the rest at 2G. there is... if you find 4 other people, and get a 10-15% off corporate discount from t-mobile
then get a t-mobile simple choice family plan with 5 people. base account price of $110 split by 5 people = $22 per
add in $20 for unlimited data = $42. add ~15% fee/taxes, minus 10-15% discount... should be under $50

With or without throttling? Straight Talk's base plan is $45 unlimited with throttling. I don't know off the top of my head, but I think there are other MVNOs for about the same price. As for unlimited everything without throttling, you're not going to get that for under $70/month. There is no free lunch.

Well like I said, you're not going to get a free lunch. If you don't want to pay for it all, you have to accept throttling and/or limited airtime. AIO offers 2 GB for $55/month. Net10 has 2.5 GB/month for $50. GoSmart has a $50 plan with 5 GB/month at 3G speed if you can live with that.
