how to unroot a phone and claim back warranty?
Hi, I'm using Nexus S.
I found on the wiki
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Flashing_Guide_-_Android
that Nexus S can relock the unlocked bootloader by using this command
fastboot oem lock
I give it a shot. and the bootloader is now locked.
I reboot my phone. The boot up only has a Google logo without the lock icon.
Does it means my phone is now unrooted? and ready to claim back warranty?
My suggestion is to odin back.

Odin first then re lock bootloader sir.

sorry, What's odin?
Odin is a windows tool used by samsung support staff to restore their android phones to stock. This is the most complete way to restore your device.
Please note that using odin on your 9023 will change your carrier info to EUR which I did never see in wild!
But honestly, do you really think samsung is checking your devices that exhaustingly? Time's money.

Basically ODIN is the program to be used in order to get the ota or go back to stock condition, you will have to go back to stock recovery. Odin is a program for your pc to flash your phone and can put the stock recovery back.

Do you still have superuser installed?
And if you boot into recovery, is it stock or clockwork?
I did it like this: restored to stock 2.3.3 with nandroid backup. Then i removed superuser. Locked the bootloader. Still had cwm recovery though.
But as soon as i updated to 2.3. 4, the recovery turned stock too.

Hi bro, since it's back to stock and the fastboot being locked. technically my warranty is claimed back? haha
They wont really care about your software. Really.
In the warranty term and condition stated that if only your software is the problem, then you will be in trouble. If not, it's alright.

unfortunately that's not right! i got my NS back on friday (sent it in, because my display is on some parts not reacting on touch any more), with the message, that my warranty is void due to an application, that is able to change system data...(no more information yet, i am still in discussion with the service center)...though i have unrooted and relocked the bootloader?!
I'm returning my current Captivate to ATT because it has way too many random shutdowns, it gets really annoying having to boot up the phone every 5 minutes. They sent me a replacement but currently I can't get ODIN to recognize the phone so I can flash it back to stock. I have Continuum running on it right now.
Could I just remove root and send the phone back? Or does anyone here have experience returning a phone with a custom ROM back to ATT? I don't want them to call me back and blame the custom ROM for the shutdowns and then in turn charge me for the replacement.
Thanks.
Yes you have to use one click and return to stock before returning phone. Custom roms and root void warranty.
Turn phone off. Plug in usb to pc. Hold volume up+down. Plug in usb to phone. Should go into dl mode and press start on one click odin.

I have a similar question, I have loaded GB continuum rom. If I return to stock with the one-click return to stock, will restore all GB boot loader?
Luckily I have an ATT return center not too far from me. I can walk in there and get a replacement. I am hoping to get one with better GPS performance (I know they exist).

Removing root wont change the fact that you have a custom rom. Make sure your in download mode on your phone, make sure odin is open first then plug in your phone. If it wont recognize your phone, try other usb ports or restart your comp. Make sure you use one click odin.

If you use the one click odin and master clear it will look like you never modded your phone.
I just did this at lunch today. Was having so many problems with my phone. 100% Sure I had faulty hardware and nothing software related. So this is what I did. I Odin-1 Clicked back to stock. Well one of my issues I was having was that even with Odin I would get a boot loop. It did get past the sbin and bootloaders, and replaced the flash screen with ATT and those annoying 3G Bars. Didnt even waste my time going to a retail store, went straight to a warranty store. In the store I explained the boot issue, and I was out with a replacement within 10 minutes. Granted if your Odin-1 Click works, you should be fine.
Sweet guys, thanks! I'll probably do this sometime next week.
Cool, thanks for the replies. I'll give it a shot on another computer because I can't seem to get ODIN to recognize the phone. I've tried 3 different USB cables. ODIN does recognize the phone when its on and running but I know you can't do anything with ODIN if the phone is on.
Try reinstalling pc drivers for phone see if that works.

Thanks guys. I was really trying to do this and this thread confirms all my questions.

Ok, here is the breakdown:
Tried to root my phone using Odin.
The .tar file uploaded successfully "passed"
Went to reboot the phone, and it got stuck in a boot loop (droid, mechanical eye, droid, etc)
Found out I loaded an old version of the .tar file.
Did a factory reset using volume up, home and power.
SO MY QUESTION IS, WELL VERIZON HAVE ANY KNOWLEDGE THAT I TRIED TO ROOT MY PHONE? I'M SENDING BACK FOR A FAULTY CHARGE PORT, THEY SENT ME A REPLACEMENT, AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY WON'T KNOW I TRIED TO TAMPER WITH IT.
Once I factory reset my phone, it was trying to do automatic updates, and kept failing during the install... Didn't know if I have to remove the .tar using the Odin somehow.
Please help!
Thanks!
Most people say they never look and have returned stuff rooted. If your that worried about it re download the files and ODIN again shouldnt take very long and is easy to do. Ahh I read you did a factory reset, guess I should learn to pay attention. I would just return and not worry.
I would return it to stock EE4 and OTA to GB or flash that stock all in one rom... most likely they won't even see anything or notice, but I'd do it anyway since I wouldn't wanna risk getting slammed with the full cost of the phone
sent from my Acer Iconia A500 beast of a tablet via XDA app
How do I remove the rooted software and install the original EE4?
How can I insure that it is correct?

Pretty much explains it there. Follow the instructions step by step then ask if you need to.
I'm one of those people who think the don't check very closely. Think how many phones, not just charge, but all smart phones that go back every day. I can't imagine the line workers who receive the returns have much incentive to find rooted phones.
But just the same. . .
But if you are returning a phone there is no downside to going back to stock. It only takes a few minutes.

My phone has been restarting at random, I rooted it and flashed ROM.I flashed a stock recovery and it is still rebooting at random, I have filed a warranty with AT&T and they are sending me a refurbished Skyrocket and I need to send this phone back. I am confident my phone doesn't have any physical damage, so my main concern is will they be able to tell I've rooted my phone and therefore voided my warranty?

If you've got a custom ROM on it, yes. Odin to stock. You can find instructions on how to in the stickies.
Also, check your flash counter in download mode. If you're 100% stock and that says no, you're fine.

Yeah, I flashed it what the stock recovery using Odin. In download mode it displays:
"Odin Mode
Product name: SGH-I727
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official"
If you're on stock GB or ICS with the stock recovery in place, they're not going to know.
I have had no luck searching for the stock firmware of the SCH i705 model and cannot get it to boot.
After following this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1885558 Root tutorial, i got to step 2, and after doing the bootloader part, my tab froze at the Odin screen..
tried to reboot into recovery mode, got it for a few tries, and it gave me errors like
"E: could not find.. . ... .system
E: failed to mount,,,.,..,cache/blah"
then the device went into a boot loop and now I powered it off.
EDIT: now when I try booting into recovery, it shows the blue loading text, then goes into odin mode with the message
"Could not do normal boot.
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SCH-I705
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
System Status: Official
QUALCOMM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE"
Can I get a link for some firmware or something? I need to get this back to normal >_<

At what state was your tab when you tried flashing aboot? This is supposed to be flashed when you have booted into android normally. Unfotunately, Verizon has not released stock firmware so this is all we have. You wouldn't even be able to flash a stock recovery or boot image that I've dumped because it's not signed by VZW.
Try going through Step 1b in the root thread again and flash the stock rooted ODIN system image.
Another question, when you're in ODIN mode, is the screen in portrait or landscape mode? Portrait = stock, locked bootloader; landscape = unlocked bootloader.
The thing you don't seem to understand is : you HAVE to reflash your tablet using ODIN. It's not that hard. Just follow the second method here (you don't need to download android SDK)
copy this in your navigator bar : rootzwiki . com/topic/37272-verizonsch-i705-root-for-all-current-firmware/ ( delete space around the dot)
Or here :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1885558
Plus, your tab will be rooted.
You're welcome.
P.S : This limitation of URL is annoying as hell.
P.S 2: Oh I see my friend up here has posted the same tutorial. Don't know which one is first. Will link to his thread.

The tutorial on rootzwiki is mine I never go over there so revosfts posted it there.
Gg. My tablet stopped powering on. Doesn't respond at all now.
Nice..
Chances are your battery is dead. Plug it into the wall for a few hours.
First off, i appreciate your help, but I am pretty sure my device is done-zo. lol
Its been plugged for at least 5 hours, still unresponsive.
Do you think I have a chance bringing in an absolutely dead (brand new) tablet to the Verizon store?
It was purchased last month so it is probably covered under warranty.. If not there is always the mfc. warranty
If it doesn't respond at all then I'd say it's safe to take it in.

Verizon won't be able to do a damn thing, I had the same issue and had to ship it to Samsung, I'm still waiting for them to reflash it and see if they charge me any money, because according to them it might be out of warranty
(obviously I didn't tell them that I was rooting and flashing a new rom)

I rooted and unlocked using odin as described and wanted to get samsroms cleanrom1 but need to be on the J1 base. Can't seem to find it so any help would be appreciated. Thanks a ton.

Yeah i had tried that last night and just saw a bunch of folders and files... none that matched the mp5 . Am i doing something wrong? It doesn't seem like the same process i had to do before.
So the original post says to copy Patch to device then flash it from recovery. Do i save the whole folder to the sdcard or just the patch file or what. Im still unsure this is the correct download. Has anyone confirmed it? Thanks
Sent from my SCH-i705 using xda app-developers app
You download the 'J1 OTA Update - Pre-Rooted.zip' to your SD Card and flash it in CWM... You don't do anything to any folder or file. Don't open the 'J1 OTA Update - Pre-Rooted.zip'. Just download it to your SD card and flash it.
Gotcha, thanks for the help. You guys are great. Keep up the good work and Merry Christmas!
