I have had a Nexus S 4G for about 2 months now, and earlier today, the 4G functionality just suddenly stopped working. It was working fine, and the connection dropped, so I went into the settings to reconnect, and now it just stays on "Initializing".
I was running the 8/31 nightly build of CM7 at the time.
I have tried the following, to no avail:
Reboot
Flash a different CM7 build
Update Profile/PRL
Wipe cache/dalvik cache
Nandroid backup, full wipe, flash stock ROM
At first I thought it might be a problem with Sprint, but my sister said 4G works just fine on her Evo, so I'm thinking it's a problem with my phone.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do to fix this, or should I just return it to Sprint and exchange it? I've had it for less than 90 days so it should still be under warranty.
Is your sister at the same location?

Yes she is.
Based on what you have said, there isn't anything that should have caused 4g to stop working. I would take it to Sprint and see what they say. Unrooted of course

Update on the situation...
In preparation for returning it to Sprint, I "unrooted" it following instructions I found on AndroidCenteral (basically downloading the GRJ22 build images and flashing those via fastboot). Strangely enough, that fixed the issue.
I've now rooted it again and am back on CM7 with no problems. Just to ensure the problem wasn't a file in the backup, I'm reinstalling everything rather than restoring a backup.
Still have no clue what the problem was, but it's working now.

No matter what ROM/Kernel I flash to i loose my WIFI access. When I go into settings/Wifi it just says ERROR. Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?
With CM7.0.3.1, I have been using bcblends tinyrcu (available through kernel manager) and leave min/max as is (806max/245min) make sure you wipe cache/dalvik before installing the kernel...
Hope this works for you.

SD card should be mounted. It's only unmounted when I plug my phone to the computer to transfer files and such...
Same thing happens to me with kernels. Sometimes Wimax too. I'm using mik shift, works fine with stock kernel.

I have a regular evo with this same problem, tried 3 dif kernals, and upteen romflashes.... still have wifi error in settings
still no progress on this, i still have this problem... super gay
I too am getting an "Error" when trying to turn wifi, Logcat says " Wifi Driver missing" have tried rebooting, and flashing another rom. any help?
Well it's probably been said before, but here goes When you flash a new Rom make sure you do a FULL wipe. It's seems trivial, but not doing this can and usually does cause all kinds off issues. Also, you should check your WiFi settings, and make sure they're correct.
Full wipe has been done and what wifi settings are you talking about? phone settings can't be accessed because the phone can't turn wifi "on". is it possible to extract the wifi driver from another shift? i have another one at my disposal. BTW wifi was working a day ago no problem. i havn't flashed a new ROM in months and was on a stock rooted rom.
Have you tried to ruu back to stock to see if you have the same issue? Or nandroid back to a version where it worked?

yea ruu'd back to froyo, re-rooted and reinstalled updated radios, and am back to gb. any idea where the wifi drivers would be? thanks for the replies.
Have you just tried it from a stock froyo rom? RUU back to 2.2 and just try it from there. It should reflash all the proper radios. Maybe the wifi chip is defective in the phone too. It happened at work to a co-workers playbook.

+1 on that. Also if it was working then not. Something else might be up, are other devices able to connect to that WiFi spot with no issues? It is possible to extract the wifi driver from another SHift. But if you just RUU back to stock it should work. If not somethingelse is definately wrong. To get to the settings: Menu-Settings-Wireless & Networks-Wi-Fi settings-menu-Avanced.
yea went ruu'd back to stock, no dice. wifi just says "error" after "turning on", must be an internal problem. other devices work fine on this point. what would be the steps to extracting the driver from another shift, i have one ready to go.
If you RUU'd back to stock, and it's a still no good. Then you might want to consider getting a replacement if WiFi is really important to you. Especially if you know for sure that other devices can connect, and you cannot on a stock Rom. But you do risk getting an updated Shift. Not a risk worth taking in my eyes. Did you make sure and check all the settings?
Yea all the settings are good, it definitely seems to be an internal problem at this point. I'm weighing the options right now and came close to ruu'ing to gb to see if it solved the problem, but I just couldn't give up root.
only 2 things come to mind on what caused this, i attempted to update to the newest ota htc update over the stock rom, ( i know stupid, got the android + !) and i installed an app to transfer files over wifi.
Wifi isn't too important but I hate the feeling of not having my phone %100.
Same problem here. I just got a wifi-error running the latest shift-deck. The phone was brand new with a bad esn (planning to flash to a different carrier) and was first turned on 8/2/11. so basically 2 weeks turned on. This just happened 2 days ago. Cleared everything and flashed again. Don't know how to RUU or what it is. Anyone want to explain?
Ruu basically puts the phone back as if it were just out of the box. There is a thread somewhere here with the file. Just make sure you get the froyo version, otherwise you won't be able to root.

I flashed to CM7 awhile ago and it had been running great on my phone. Within the lass day it started having problems connecting to the internet. Now, when I updated to the 7/21 I lost internet completely. Since I thought it could be a roaming type of issue I flashed back to EE19 where data worked fine. I did ADW DEBUG anyways hoping it would bring back data in CM7. I can't figure out how to get data back with CM7 even after multiple data-wipes and reflashes. Does any one have any ideas? I can always go back to 2.2, I'm just hoping that I could keep using 2.3.4.
Try flashing back to the build before 7/21 (whatever date it is).
Tried a clean wipe and went to 7/21. Boot looped after installing gapps. Wiped clean and went to previous Cm7 and it works fine. My phone must not like something about the 7/21 version.

im having this problem but its on all the cm7 builds
My phone was working perfectly on Koush's ICS Alpha 8. I decided to flash a different radio, KF1, and after flashing it I got 0 service. It won't grab any service. I've wiped multiple times, and formatted everything possible from the Recovery menus. I flashed over like 5 other Radios, and still wont work. I don't really understand this.
anyone know what to do?
Have you flashed a different rom? If so, you should probably try a stock ROM. Does the radio show the correct version in the rom?

Try restoring back to stock.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
I guess I'll restore to entire stock. Though I did re-flash a CM build, and still had the problem.
It shows the radio version in about phone as the correct one too. It's just an odd situation, but I'll restore to stock and see if it fixes anything.
Just FYI, anyone that ahs this problem, odds are your efs was corrupt or formatted.
I flashed a new Radio, and I suppose it somehow wiped over my efs partition.
Anywho, I used this app: http://www.nexussforum.net/nexus-s-apps/(app)-efs-backup-and-restore/msg9658/
And restored a backup I had. Hope you have a backup!

If it were me, I'd go back to stock by flashing the factory images. That should restore the 4g stuff that may have been wiped.

So, I guess I will flash to stock. Verify 4G, and then I should be able to go back to Rasbeanjelly ROM? I switched to it earlier this week and love how fast it is compared to anything else I have used. Where is the best place to download the stock ROM?
Thanks for the help.

I just restored a back up from June. I still don't seem to have 4G, but have spotty coverage in my office. I will check coverage when I leave today. If this is no good, where is the best place to get a stock ROM to flash to?
Still no 4G. I flashed to 'One Click Stock.crespo4g.4.1.1.zip'. I still don't have 4G. I am not sure what to do now. Is there a flash for WiMax?

Flash the factory image from Google through fastboot -- I assume that you have fastboot working
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
This explains how to do it

I just went back to factory settings using the following guide: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...39-guide-restore-stock-unroot-nexus-s-4g.html I still don't have 4G. I guess the only option is to see if Sprint can fix it.
I also saw that my SDcard was not wiped. I figured a full restore back to stock would have wiped the SD card. Any thoughts on what I should do before taking it to Sprint?

No going to stock doesn't wipe SD. I would back the SD all up on your computer then format through computer (this is just good to do every once and a while...it will make your phone fly ). Since you are stock just stay stock and unrooted before going to Sprint. :good:
Should have my replacement phone on Friday.
Got my new phone. Confirmed 4g. Spent the day trying to get it rooted and up to 4.2.1. I have had no luck. I tried multiple rooting scripts. Each time I get the phone rooted, but am unable to install another ROM. It looks like something with TWRP. I made sure TWRP was updated. Now I was going back to stock to give up, since I seem to be all thumbs today. In the process, I got hung up. Now when i reboot, it hangs on the Google splashscreen. I can get to fastboot, but can't get to recovery....that gets me green android on his back with red triangle. I was fine rooting and unrooting my old phone.
I tried Nexus Root Toolkit to get back to stock when it locked up on me.
Please help.
Whenever i totally screw up my phone, i use this first http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15628028
Then i use this to root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14143130
Some of that might be outdated... But it worked last time i used it... After all done, it will put you on unlocked boot loader, rooted, 2.3.7 GB, with clockworkmod recovery... I've never used twrp because cwm always worked fine for me!!

Not sure what i am doing wrong. I used Wugs Nexus Toolkit for Root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984849 The ROOT process hung up at TWRP, so I manually finished the install of CWM-SuperSU-v0.98, Busybox-signed and perm-recovery-signed
I guess for now I will stay on this ROM. When I get some more free time, I will try using the steps the1dynasty provided. I am learning a lot.
Guys I've tried searching and tried damn near anything I can think of/find here on XDA and other sites.
Over the weekend I got a little sick of my GPS not locking on my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 SCH-I535. I was running CleanRom 7 and I believe I was on MB1 - I could be wrong on the basebad that I was on.
Anyways, after doing my normal reading to see what the latest and greatest things going on are I decided I wanted to do a complete wipe like I'd done in the past, update to MF1 firmware, update my radio to ML1, then put a fresh install of CleamRom 7 on there.
So I used to did a format of my external SD then a factory wipe/reset & cache wipe in CWR. I then went directly into Odin mode (Home Button/Volume Down/Power) and flashed the root66_VZW_I535VRBMA2.7z from this thread. I installed EzUnlocker and RomManager. I unlocked the phone, then flashed CWR. I first did a factory wipe/reset, I then flashed the MF1 firmware, followed by the ML1 radio, and finally Clean Rom 7.
Everything was fine except my 4G LTE would not turn on - 3G works fine but no 4G LTE. I've tried everything I could possibly think of. I've flashed to the prerooted MA2 linked above in Odin. I've tried the 2-3 suggestions in this thread, I've tried making my own APN settings, I've tried the thread which has links for people who are returning their phone to Verizon (plain jane stock). Nothing. All of those bring me the same result: Everything works perfectly fine, but the 4G LTE never shows up. It doesn't matter where I am - I know it is not a network outtage as people in the office have no issues and I always have a connection here and at home.
I've already ordered a new SIM card which should show up tomorrow but did I miss anything? I tried everything I could think of. As of right now I'm back at square one where I'd gone back to MA2, flashed MF1 + ML2 firmware, and back on Clean Rom 7. Stuck with 3G. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Just Odin flashed the VRALG1 4.0 ICS to bring it back to stock found here in Section 5: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709. Still no luck.
Am I correct in saying when flashing that it is also flashing the modem/firmware? I want to make sure I'm not missing anything.
I had the same problem not too long ago. My issue was the PRL usually 4G PRL starts with 15xxx but if you go into settings-->about phone-->status you should check to see whether it is a 15xxx or 3xxxx. If the latter a new sim card should fix it right up.
