flashed CM 7 yesterday, I was wanting to change to a custom boot animation, but my regular one is under system/media and I tried using root explorer to give full perms, but no matter what I can't seem to get it to work, any ideas?

You shouldn't have to mess with permissions. Just put your bootanimation.zip in /system/media just like the one that's already there and replace it.
^ Shift Faced
Don't forget to rename it the same as the one you are replacing. you can just pu old in the name of the original and leave it there and when the phone boots it will recognize the new bootanimation.zip. Abd if it doesn't work for some reason you can change the name back and you should be back to normal.
The problem I'm having is that every time if I try to place it there I get a system is read only folder error

Are you using root explorer? If you are when you have that file open at the top of the screen in a little box it says mount R/W tap that ,then try to paste the file in that folder.
it worked that time, thanks for the help

Probably. I've never had to change the permissions myself. If you're using Root Explorer then mount r/w then long press on the file and choose Permissions. Change them to match below:
Let us know if that fixes it.

I actually just literally changed my boot animation back to the BIOS one after upgrading to CM7.1
Hook the Shift up to your computer with USB Debugging on
Have the boot animation you want on the root of the SD card called bootanimation.zip
Open up CMD, cd to where you have adb set up
From there do this
adb devices
adb remount
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media
To test it: adb shell bootanimation
Works for me everytime
Related
Basic explanation of this bootanimation. Part0, first part of boot animation starts with N E X U S O N E being spelled out top and bottom, then flying multiple N E X U S O N E letters move from outside to inside being consumed by the "fire" in the middle. Then NEXUS ONE is morphed and twisted into the Image you see below. Second part is Red Flame edition of standard bootanimation. Refined this quite a bit to get the colors to really pop off on the N1 screen.
Enjoy.
bootanimation.zip push to /system/media and reboot

I get the following message when trying to adb push:

Anything to do about that so i have write permissions to /system/media??

Why not just put it in /data/local the boot animation binary looks there first and you don't have to remove your old boot animation.
either/or good point.

How would I go about pushing the file? I have the option to unzip but it saves it on the SD card. Am I doing something wrong?

I second this as I referred to this forum as to where to delete my custom boot animation from and ended up deleting the original one, (and the entire media folder.... i was drunk) but pushed it all back with the latest update (unzip vanilla update.zip and extract /system/media then in the same folder in cmd go: adb push media /system/media)
What`s with the blue version?
Is there anyway to create a ZIP file that will work as upgrade to add the bootanimation? I'm at work, without my microsd cable... Would like to just download from dropbox.
honestly.. when i saw the screenshot i just thought "ugly...".. then i installed it cause my current boot animation is worse lol
now.. i think: Awesome! Great work, really, looks perfect.
This is the Launcher2 pulled from CM-5.0.6-N1. I have themed it (KANGING OTHERS WORK OF COURSE).
You will also get the black facebook widget!
This has the standard 4 or 5 drawer.
UPDATE.ZIP
apk until I get update.zip fixed
adb push launcher2.apk /system/app
if on cyanogen 5.0.6-N1 you should be fine!
If you get force closes do adb -r /data/data/com.android.launcher2

People are having some issues with roms other than 5.0.6test1. So to remedy that do:
adb pull /system/app/Launcher2.apk Launcher2.bak so you have a working backup in case and don't forget to clear launcher data before pushing or after if you are getting fc.
how about a morph or an update.zip style?
I will see what I can do when I get home tonight. I did this while at work so I just didn't have the time.
no worries, just thought id ask.not fond of other method unless there is no other alternative.
Can this be used on a CDMA Hero? If not is there any way you can port it over?
I am not 100% certain, can you run:
adb pull /system/app/Launcher2.apk ~/Desktop (if you are on linux) or the same command with c:\ if you are on Windows and then get me Launcher2.apk that it spits out. I am not familiar with what apps are on that device. If the Launcher2 is the same (I think it probably is assuming it is using Launcher2) then it can be used.

Sorry school started back yesterday and I am taking 20Hrs this quarter, so my time is very limited.
Until I get time you can do this:
Download, Rename, copy to SDcard.
Open andexplorer (I am sure you have it if you are using metamorph)
Navigate to the Launcher2.apk file
choose it
select package installer, and Voila!
Just as easy as an update.zip but no reboot!
Tried to download but it says invalid file link

in alot of the roms I've used, there have been 3g variations in the files, just not in the right place or named correctly for CDMA. You can grab those if you want or create your own. Name them the same as the ones you want to replace. Open the apk with winzip or whatever app you use, find the files you want to replace, then drag the new ones into the apk.
If you get a prompt about encryption, choose other, then no encryption.
After that, build a folder structure just as if the app would be in the phone.
ex: system/framework/
- place the apk inside of the framework folder, and zip it.
- next you need to sign the zip, I'd use flipz's kitchen
- install via RA (place on sd card, reboot into recovery and install)

with your favorite graphic editor, their png files.
beyond that, you might want to make a request in the thread where you got the ROM.
what ROM and addons are you using anyway?
here's a metamoprh zip that will change to 3g icons, and nothing else.

but, back to the long way. i found the right file, (using regaw mod, comes with the 3g icon) what do i change it to?
thank you for the zip I booted into recovery and flashed it but i still have the EV?
it's not a zip you flash. Download metamorph from the market, and install it from there.
and mountain... I just used the default 3g icons in framework-res.apk and placed them into com.htc.resources.apk with the metamorph
thankx guys I got it working
no problem
I installed MetaMorph, but at the beginning it says start basic checks to see if your phone can run, and it just hangs there and says its not responding, asks to wait or FC, please help

Go to system/media. Then delete the bootanimation.zip file there.

There will be a something caleed *.qmg file. I don't remember exactly the name. Which is the dwfault bootanimation file I guess.

Nothing similar to this was found.
Within the system/media I did find it, was first looking in the wrong spot. However it doesn't let me delete the file or rename it. How do I remove it?
You will need root to delete it.
First remount /system to a writeable state and then delete the file or rename it.
Some advertising:
You can use my app to do that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013063
Start the app, go settings check "Remount /system", restart my app, browse to /system and delete or rename the file.

You will have to use an app or adb. If you don't know how to change boot animations properly, then you should probably stick with an app - no offense. If you're using Root Explorer, select the "mount r/w" button at the top. When you're finished, mount r/o the same way. Otherwise, the app mentioned in the post above mine will work. Do you have a different boot animation to replace it with? If you want the boot animation that came with the rom, just reflash the rom over itself. Just wipe cache and dalvik (don't wipe data) and you'll be good to go.

I tried both ES file explorer and Root explorer, those are my go-to tools, and yeah that's what I do, overwrite the existing files. Worked fine for spinning earth but not for night sky, even when I tried restoring the stock boot animation first (I always copy the stock files to a secure location first)
Not sure what to tell you. If its doing that with stock boot files too it would indicate another issue. Maybe clear cash in recovery
