I got my HTC Sensation 4G last week rooted it and installed Android Revolution HD 3.0.4.
Today I noticed that there is a new version 3.1.0 and I am wondering if there any way to upgrade the rom without losing any installed apps or data.

just check ARHD's thread and see if the latest one needs a full wipe. if so, you'll lose all ur data; if not, just wipe the cache and dalvik cache, then go on flashing it, reboot, done.
If it's a small update then you could just flash it.
It is kinda small but the question is if I have to install all the apps again.
If you just flash it over an existing install then no, you only need to do a fix-permissions if you get crashes and errors. If you wipe then install then yes you will need to reinstall all your downloaded apps.

Hi,
If you are installing new ROM with the same base(ie 3.0.4 to 3.1.1)
Then you will not lose any settings or apps.
You will lose any mods(battery %,crt etc.)
Just go to recovery and wipe cache partition and dalvik(advanced)
and you are good to go.

I am loving this rom but I am nervous if and when the developer comes out with a new version.
When the newer version comes out how do I update to the newest version? Do I have to erase everything and start over again? Thanks so much!
well if you installed stock ROM, you will probably recieve an update without need to delete anything, but if you used custom ICS rom like CM than you will have to update it manually...

download it, put it on phone, and just apply it using CW recovery, if its same rom but new versiom, for example CM9 v19 and you want to put CM9 v20 than in most cases you just apply it and it should work, but its always good practice to make backup before any ROM update...use titanium backup or something similar

In most cases, you can clear caches, and flash over. I went from 32 to 43 without wiping, and have no issues. In fact, it is my main fallback backup when testing new ROMs. By doing this, all previous settings will stay.
If there is a major overhaul, though, you will want to wipe if you run into force closes. So let's say Google releases 4.0.4 tomorrow and aosp releases a new ROM update based on it. In most cases, you will want to full wipe and clean install. This is where titanium backup pro is very useful.

i looked through the forum and didn't find this exact question so i'm sorry if it's been posted before.
basically what i'm wondering is if i have a ROM installed, let's just say one of the new ICS ones, and a new release of that ROM comes out, is there a way to upgrade to the newer version without having to install all my apps and stuff again through titanium backup? i hope that makes sense. in other words, is installing a new version of a ROM that you are already using going to be the same process as flashing a new ROM entirely? that could get annoying with newer versions of ICS seemingly coming out twice a week.

It's recommended to wipe and reflash, but I just flash over top and if there's problems I resort to wiping. Clear cache and dalvik and just flash over top, your apps will still be there. But if you do it this way, you should not report any problems

Probably could have used search to find this. But typically, unless the dev say to full wipe, when an update comes out for the rom you are using you can flash the update over the older version without a full wipe. You are still required to clear cache/dalvik to do this. If anything that was working before does not work anymore after you have flashed the update over the older version, then you should go back and do a full wipe and flash the new version. I personally always full wipe when flashing a newer version.

It all depends on the ROM and what is updated. Seriously you have to go by what the DEV says in his thread. Some you can update without wiping and some you have to wipe. Others will automatically wipe for you. Best advice is to read the DEV's thread. They should all give you this info. And if you looked over the first few posts of his thread you really wouldn't be asking this question here.
Some mods have the cache/dalvik wipe built in, so just make sure you read through the thread for whatever mod you're trying. Wiping it twice won't hurt, but just wastes a little time.

really? man. I'll make this very simple for you.
1. put rom on root of sdcard
2. boot into recovery
3. wipe data, cache, dalvik cache
4. install from sdcard the zip file
5. reboot.
almost all ROMs except for the PD98IMG.zip stock ROMs are flashed with the above method. Not all ROMs require a full wipe (data, cache, dalvik cahce) when upgrading within the same ROM but it is recommended to do so to avoid any issues. If you're switching between different ROMs, it is required to do a full wipe. Search my good man.

Usually when new releases of roms are available and you're running a previous version of that rom, you are able to update. Clean installs are recommended though, but since you don't want to lose data, you could follow these steps:
- Make a nandroid backup
- format all partitions
- flash the rom
- advance restore the data (from your previous nandroid)
- clear dalvik cache and reboot
N.B. Only do this if the rom was an update to your previous rom.

It´s better to do a clean install.
If you have the latest paid version of Titanium Backup, you can pull all of your apps and data from the nandroid.

Battery stats doesn't need to be wiped (even if it is a different rom). A user should only wipe it if they are having issues with the battery. Also, the system may need to be wiped for a "cleaner" replacement of updated files.
Hey everyone. I have a rooted HTC One S. I downloader ROM Manager and downloaded CM10. i installed it, but on startup, the CM10 boot animation just keeps going and going. the longest i let it go was close to 20 mins. I'm pretty sure tht this shouldn't be happening, any thoughts or suggestions would be nice.

A wipe was all that needed to be done. The problem was ROM Manager wasnt wiping prior to installation. Thanks for the help, +1.
Hi All,
I have posted this on the GooManager thread but there hasn't been much activity there recently so asking here as well. Noob question on GooManager...I have the AOKP rom installed on my Sensation and GooManager notifies me of updates to my ROM every now and then. I just want to know if updating my ROM build with GooManager will reset all my custom ROM settings and preferences or will they all be preserved? I'd like to keep my ROM up to date but if it means spending all the time again to setup my preferences and icons/widgets/home screens etc. then I'd rather stick with what I have.

I'd recommend to use GooManager only to download the newest ROM and flash it from recovery.
I asume you're using AOKP Swagger from frankenstine, the same I use.
I just download the update from GooManager, boot to recovery, flash ROM, gapps and 4.2 stuff and are ready to go.
All my settings are their after updating - only AdAway needs a reconfiguration and a reboot (and I need to set my alarm clock since I'm overwriting that). Basically you keep all your settings except those you made to the kernel.

Oh perfect, yes indeed I am using that exact ROM.
OK so when I boot to recovery, I shouldn't do any wiping? Just simply flash the new file? Will the updated gapps package be in the download I get from GooManager?

I only wipe dalvik & cache after each update.
I can't say something about what GooManager downloads as "gapps", I use some I downloaded some weeks ago + some old version of 4.2 stuff. I might need to update my flash-setup too

Thanks lolmachine, for the benefit of anyone who might have the same question as me the following worked:
- Downloaded latest build of my AOKP Rom via GooManager
- Downloaded latest gapps package for my ROM via GooManager
- Boot to Recovery
- Flash new ROM file and then gapps package
- Restart.
My only question is, I didn't wipe davlik and cache so should I, and what difference does it make if I don't?
I used Goo the other day to flash, ummm, bugger, can't remember if it was an update or a new rom.
Oh now I remember, the latest one was an update to Bruce's Rom. I do believe when I tapped flash rom it booted to recovery (the one it installs) and I may have had to select "Install" from there, don't think so though. Either way, I used Goo to handle the install.
I didn't do a wipe. From what I've picked up, wiping is a good way to cover your butt. So if you're having issues and didn't wipe, you go back and do it all again with a wipe. Doing the wipe to start with means you can eliminate those types of issues from the start.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong (which I probably am )
Hi there, I also received an update to my ROM via Goo Manager. It is CyanogenMod 10.1 by Albinoman887 for my HTC Sensation XE. I am using the EXT4 bootloader. I just installed it a few nights ago so I am completely new to rooting. My question is that there is no option to wipe dalvik cach. EXT4 just says wipe cache, wipe data and wipe system. Does wipe cache wipe dalvik cache as well. Also do I need to re-flash gapps as well after updating and will this wipe my gmail accounts etc?

You want to select "wipe dalvik+cache" option when you flash an update.
There's no need to flash gapps after a ROM update.

im using albinoman's jelly bean rom
excuse me for noob doubts but
1) goo manager shows i have an update, so ive downloaded it. its a zip just like the rom n not just a small update. i have downloaded it now what should i do?
2) if i have to go to the recovery and flash the zip then i have to wipe only the cache right? Im using 4ext recovery.
3) will all my apps get uninstalled? what about the app data?
4) what about gapps? i have a gapps zip file, will i have to flash it again after the update?

I finally rooted phone after silly VMUNE7 thing on Verizon but after I get the install openrecoverscript and hit reboot recovery it does not go to teamwiz bootload instead I get something with a green driod on the bottom saying downloading but above it saying in red can't download Odin mode?? Please help I want to run cleanrom for better battery and less bloatware and keep my touchwiz. :crying:

Simple.
Go to recovery.
For s-on you must enable smartflash.
Do a nandroid backup.
Dirty flash the update (meaning flash over the previous rom without wiping).
Dirty flash gapps (signed only).
Wipe cache + dalvik.
Reboot.
If it can't boot/run properly then you can just restore the backup or do a clean flash.
First off I'm not experienced in any way, got my Sensation unlocked, rootet and installed Sultanxda's 4.4.2 ROM for sensation. I'm on S-On, too, if anyone wonders.
Updating didnt affect my apps as far as I can tell. Everything seems to be the way as before and everything seems to be working.
What I did was download the ROM manually since the download with goomanager didn't work. I downloaded gapps as backup because I didnt have the zip on my SD, just in case anything would go wrong.
You only need to boot into recovery, with S-On make sure smartflashing or something like that is on, select the zip, flash it and then select wipe cache +dalvik.
It's pretty much what AndroidSupporter318 wrote, just wanted to give feedback and say what I did in detail in case anyone was still wondering.

I guaranted 4EXT Recovery for this type of problem. U don't need to boot into recovery and work with 4ext is very simple.
