Receiving Tmobile small mms - HTC Inspire 4G

I been looking the whole day and i have found many old threads about the same problem in other devices but i haven't found really anything that worked. I know there are a lot of users of unlocked Tmobile Inspire 4g so i decided to create a new thread and who ever haves the solution for that specific device please post here.
Ever since i started using Tmobile sim card on my phone, the picture messages that i receive are really really small. I also had some problems on sending and receiving them but after 2 phone calls with t-mobile they gave me the following settings to set up and fix this problem:
settings->wirelles & networks->Mobile networks -> Acess Point Names ->
Name:T-mobile
APN:epc.tmobile.com

A. dont know what rom you are on
B. dont know how many people actually have this problem, you know, since its an AT&T phone and all
C. you literally only waited 15 hours for someone that would happen to have your answer that would happen to be running their Inspire 4G on TMobile
D. you had 80 views because you didn't even word your topic right. probably had 30 people come in here looking for the answer, and the other 50 were just wondering WTF
E. lose the attitude. you arent paying anyone here, and noone here is being paid to help you.
learn to be a little more patient. your gimme gimme attitude is what turns off a lot of people.

Not to mention there isn't enough info provided. Nobody knows if you are stock unrooted, stock rooted, or rooted on a custom rom and which rom if you are. It is my understanding that you may need to install a custom mms apk that allows you to change user agent or perform an edit in an xml file. I'm not sure, since I haven't done this and it is probable that you won't be able to if you are not rooted.

Well, Idk whats up with all the "hate" but I see I am not the only one who have an attitude here then, people like u love going around on forums teaching other people "rules" on something then YOU drop the attitude because I didn't come here to argue with you on how u think what I said is wrong. I came here because
a. Yes, I have found many people in other forums with the same problem because even if the phone is made for at&t, after unblocking the only carrier using SIM card in the US(if I am right) is tmobile. Like I said, I didn't come here to argue with anybody I came to talk to other people with the same problem and solve it TOGETHER! I even posted what I've got so far.My apolagies with my "sacarstic" comment before for anybody that would feel offended like the guy above did.
Now.. back to what matters......
No my phone is not rooted and I tried to download some files to fix the same problem for other HTCphones before.... Is there anyway I could do it without rooting?

was sarcastic??
that was somehow not going to offend the people on these forums?
how?
based on your signature, you are using a Desire HD ROM? that would indicate you are rooted?
DETAILS man..... DETAILS
what rom are you on?
what firmware? 2.2.1? 2.3.3? 2.3.5?
explain what 'really small' is. filesize? dimensions?

I am not rooted, sometimes apps recognize my phone as desire hd.
My Android version is 2.3.3
The pictures show like a thumbnail, usually maximum size 14kb.
The forum won't let me post links yet but there was a solution found for other devices.
I am a "noob" so I and trying to don't root my phone I am scared of messing it up.
Ps.. I am a girl , sry

Without being rooted there are only a few options for you. Do you have the size of the MMS adjusted to the maximum size in the "Messages" settings? Have you tried a 3rd party sms app like "Handcent" or "GoSMS"? Make sure you turn up MMS size in these apps also. The only other thing to mess with is your APN.
There was much talk on the HD2 section of this forum with small pics for T-mobile. Maybe you can find help there.

Still looking for a solution to this this! Any help out there

Don't know if this would work or not - I had a similar problem with a ROM in the first few weeks of flashing (note: I am NOT on TMobile, but was having the tiny mms problem), and I found a guide suggesting to edit build.prop to disguise it as a nexus. It worked for some reason...but I can't for the life of me find this walkthrough. The following steps will accomplish the same thing, disguising it as a phone tmous knows. It's worth a shot (backup first)..
1.) Download “Root Explorer” or a simpler application
2.) Open Root Explorer and go into the System folder
3.) One in the System folder, hit the Mount R/W at the top right
4.) Hold down on Build.prop file and then open it in the text editor
5.) Change the following lines
Here are the changes you need to make:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=tmobile
ro.product.name=vision
ro.product.device=vision
ro.product.board=vision
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC ro.build.fingerprint=tmobile/htc_vision/vision/vision:2.2/FRF91/277427:user/release-keys
6.) Hit menu and Save & Exit. You’ll get a message explaining that the original build.prop file was saved as build.prop.bak
7.) Reboot and try MMS again

Homeslice is dead on. I have seen you posting in numerous threads and forums and started searching for you. Seems it is not the phone that is to blame. It is the T-mobile network. If the phone is unrecognized by the t-mobile network(non T-mobile branded phones) it automatically gets the tiny MMS pic. The downside to his changes is your phone will need to be rooted to make the changes he suggested.
Have you tried a third party app like handcent or go sms to see if they work better for you?

Thanks a million for the information. I will give it a shot. It seams plausible that Tmobile would deliver small MMS to non Tmobile phones.I also tried a Sony Erickson droid mini x10 pro and it won't even get the small mms.

Yes I have tried third party apps and have tried handscent to no avail. Anyhow, that is pretty lame of T-mobile stigmatizing non T-mobile phones. I appreciate you looking into the tiny MMS issue for us. I will give the Homeslice method a shot and see if it works. If it does I will definitely post on here that it is an affirmative fix.

[GUIDE] EVO on MetroPCS Web,MMS,G Apps WORKING!

UPDATE 10-10-10:
This guide is no longer needed, as full ROMs are now available for the EVO on MetroPCS.
-MetroDroid v1.0 By Bloodykiller86 (Ready to run)
-Jiminy v2 By deathsled(Needs Token's Metro flash V3)
I wanted to post a full working solution for MMS for the HTC EVO on MetroPCS. This is a mix of excerpts from other guides and ideas all in one place.
UPDATE 09-07-10:
This method is no longer ROM specific, you can use almost any ROM!!
Credits:
token419
killac93
Avalaunchmods
Others, that i missed or don't know...sorry
What this can do:
-SMS
-MMS
-Web
-Voice search (with v2.0.1 and up ONLY)
-Voice mail notifications
-Google apps that sync (news, weather)
-Browse the market (DL is still WiFi only)
-Working Froyo ROM
What this can't do:
-Visual Voice Mail (i think you need to sign up for it from metro, @ $3 mo)
-DL from market with 1X Metro service
-4G
-Print money
-Grant wishes, even if one wish is for a iPhone4
Software needed:
-Rooted EVO
-Working EVO ROM
-Ava-FroyoV2RC3 ROM (thread link below)LINK with wifi fix(still fastest way to get it working)
-metropcs_eris_web_mms_v3.zip (thread link below)
-Cdma-Workshop (Any Build...google it )
-Qpst v2.7 build 323 LINK PASS=cdma-king.com
-Htc Hero DIAG Drivers LINK
-Htc Sync LINK
-ClockWorkMod/Rom Manager (Free Market DL)
-Autostart (Free market DL)
-Titanium Backup (Free market DL) Optional!
You will need someone to add your ESN to Metros inventory... search Ebay, craigslist, or local stores...NOT corporate stores!
Android market ONLY works on wifi with this setup on a 1X metroPCS network. BUT, you can download apps from SlideME.org WITHOUT wifi... they have a market type app you can download on their website.
BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA FIRST!!!!!!
PART 1:
1. Press ##DIAG# (##3424#) on your phone You will see a screen Pop Up Thats Normal
2. Now plug The phone up to the computer and it will try and find the drivers but it will fail or ask you to locate the drivers manually so make sure you remember where you unzipped the files
3. Once you have that setup Go to Cdma-Workshop Go To the port the phone is on and Read From the Phone and go to the Security Tab.....and On the Spc Section Read The lock Code and write it to back to the phone so it says unlocked Then make the code 000000 and rewrite the code so it says sucess.
4. Now Close Cdma-Workshop and Open QPST Configuration Click On The Ports Tab and Add New Port ( Make Sure Show Serial and Usb/QC Diag Ports Only is Unchecked) and Add The Port Of Your Hero.
5.Highlight Your Port and Click Start Client and Start Service programming and Press Read From Phone The SPC should be all 0's so click on the M.I.P. Tab and Change The Mobile IP Behavior To Simple Ip. Edit The M.I.P. Profiles at the Top. Your NAI and Tethered NAI should be ([email protected])
6. Next Click On The PPP Config Tab and Click the UM Button your user id should be ([email protected]) and the password and tethered NAI should be metropcs. Do the Same For the AN Button and press Write to Phone It should Give You a Error But Dont Worry About It
7. Press ##DATA# (##3282#) And Setup your Data for your phone and press menu and Commit So your phone Will Reboot
ORIGINAL THREAD:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=704161
PART 2:
Download Rom Manager from the Market.
Download Autostart Root from the market
Put the "metropcs_eris_web_mms_v3.zip" on the root of your sdcard.
Open Rom Manager and select "Install ROM from sdcard".
It will give you a list of items on your sdcard.. select "metropcs_eris_web_mms_v3.zip"
DO NOT SELECT WIPE DATA, but you may select backup ROM if you want. You are not installing a ROM, just some patch files.
MertoPCSv3 THREAD:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730289
No need for anycut proxy setup with token419's flash install....
Quote form Token419's thread on what his flash does:
Requirements:
1. Rooted Rom that supports IPTABLES and has been flashed and booted once
2. Download the file for your carrier from below
3. Flash the file you dowloaded for your carrier from your recovery console (i.e. Amon Ra, Clockwork etc.)
4. Download and install "Autostart (root)" from blank-online.eu in the Marketplace
5. After the phone reboots choose "Always Allow" to the SU prompt
6. Reboot (some froyo roms take 2 reboots)
7. Done
What this flash doesYou don't need to do any of this, it is just outlining what the flash file does)
1. Remove any instances of:
/system/bin/u2nl
/system/xbin/sqlite3
/data/opt/autostart.sh
/data/eri.xml
2. Push and set appropriate Permissions on:
/system/bin/u2nl (the program that makes routing traffic through the proxy possible)
/system/xbin/sqlite3 (some roms include this, but the permissions may not be set correctly)
/data/eri.xml (used to change the Carrier Display name on the lock screen and notification bar)
/data/opt/autostart.sh (used set the iptables and u2nl settings at boot)
3. Drop database tables and replace them with appropriate Carrier Settings in:
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db (the database that the MMS program looks at for carrier settings)
4. Updates to proper MNC and Carrier name in build.prop

PART 3:
Using the Mms.apk from the incredible, you will be able to send MMS.
Download the Mms.apk from below.
Using adb push you will need to replace the Mms.apk that on the phone with this one.
Start a command prompt:
Code:
>adb remount
>adb push c:\Mms.apk /system/app/Mms.apk
>adb reboot
I am not a ADB master, but this worked for me, if someone wants to suggest a better/cleaner solution. Feel free
Once the phone has restarted, open the messaging app. Try to send a MMS (use a buddy or your email). It should send.
Now for the bugs:
-Once a SMS/MMS has sent, you cant view the conversation threads or read new SMS or MMS.... just says loading forever.
-You cant send MMS with wifi on, just turn it off to send. (looking into fixing that)
Workaround:
Once you have sent a MMS and you can confirm it working. Download Handcent from the market. You will be able to view SMS and MMS threads with handcent. But you can ONLY send MMS with the OEM messaing app. If you send with the handcent, it will send a SMIL.XML file with the image, and the person getting it will most likely not be able to view it.
RECAP:
-Send MMS with messaging app
-View SMS/MMS with handcent
-Send SMS with handcent
I know this sux, but it does work!! Hopfully after MetroPCS starts the android plan, we wont have any problems.
EDIT:
Anyone having problems with voice mail notifications, here is the fix.
Using adb push you need to push the VVM.apk from below to the system/app folder on the phone. And remove the Sprint_VVM.apk app.
Start a command prompt:
Code:
>adb remount
>adb push c:\VVM.apk /system/app/VVM.apk
>adb shell rm /system/app/Sprint_VVM.apk
>adb reboot
Now you will need Voicemail notification app from the market, it free...
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.uk-co-extorian-voicemailnotifier-jAjiz.aspx
I have confirmed this method working with these ROMs:
-Fresh EVO (all)
-OMJ (all)
Now you should have working MMS, WEB and google apps (market still WiFi DL only)
This guide is what i used to get mine working....mileage may vary....

Voice mail, you DO get notification, voice mail needs to be set up... i will add it to the guide. But Visual Voice Mail does not work. MetroPCS does offer a visual voice mail for $3 a month....i see settings that would indicate that it "SHOULD" work with the metro system

UPDATE 8/1/10
Using the Ava FroyoV2RC3: as of today, i am getting "service denied" message when sending a MMS..... web and sync apps work just fine.
In other words, this solution does not get MMS working. In addition, the use of Anycut isn't really required if the autostart and u2nl solution is correctly implemented.
We really need to consolidate these procedures and improve existing solutions as opposed to coming up with additional partial solution threads. As I mentioned in another thread, everything but MMS has been working for the EVO on Cricket and Metro for some time now. The only real challenge at this point is MMS.

You are MORE then welcome to come up with YOUR own solution.....
i should have a new flash up soon that specificly targets backend MMS stuff, i hope its exactly whats needed for you all.
Just waiting for word back from whiterabbit about some mods i did to his updated script.
The new updates from him that i will incorporate will be a considerably better, and mine helps with "in network" networking, then sends anything else out via u2nl. Hope he approves my mods and then i can start work.
So far i have full TCP and ICMP traffic working via the proxy.
I was having some issues on cricket so i decided to make some mods and walah im up 100% of the time. I too was having sporadic mms working. I think it was because we were directing all traffic to u2nl which forwarded to the proxy, then it hit the MMS server, whereas with my new mods if the MMS server is available in the local network inside the proxy, it gets sent there directly.
Ill post an update when i update my thread with a new flash
Thanks token419!!
I look forward to trying your new script.
Why
For those of you which attempted this solution and are unaware, this does not provide working internet, is buggy, at best, and is Rom-dependent. MMS will be resolved and added to my tutorial as soon as I have time to iron it out.
Everything, except for MMS, has been working on the EVO since I posted posted a tutorial weeks ago.
Not to bash this tutorial - but I must say, working MMS and broken Internet is not what most people are looking for.
Cheers!

[FIX] 3G Upload & Download Speeds

Don't forget to change your proxy!
I've recently learned that sprint phones route data through a proxy by default to throttle download speeds. You can easily change that www.forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922978
I am wondering if I flash a new Rom that doesn't have epst, will I be SOL? I believe that the Rom must be sense for this to work...

Link is borked
link dont work?
Step 1. Install MSL Reader from the market, use this to obtain your MSL.
Step 2. In your dialer, enter ##3282#
Step 3. Choose Edit Mode and enter your MSL as the requested password.
Step 4. Choose Advanced
Step 5. Change HTTP PD Proxy Porter to 0
Step 6. Change HTTP PD PD Proxy Address to 0.0.0.0
Step 7. Back out of here, and reboot.
I should add that I am noticing a real difference (but cannot confirm it is not placebo).
interesting, ill keep my eye on this.
As we all know, HTC and Sprint borked downloads for apps like Rhapsody, Mog, Thumbplay.
I recently ran across the subject and i found a fix. It is very simple.
1. Get your MSL, There are many ways, call Sprint, Download the app MSL Reader from the market, CDMA workshop
2. After you have your MSL go to your phone and type ##3282#
3. Click Edit Mode
4. Click Advanced
5. Scroll down to HTTP PD Proxy Port & HTTP PD Proxy Address
6. Change HTTP PD Proxy Port to 0 (zero)
7. Change HTTP PD Proxy Address to 0.0.0.0
8. Go enjoy Downloads and a .20-.60 mbps increase in 3G speeds!

No worries, the other post has a bad title, so it should probably be merged into this one.

humm can't or don't see any difference...
I don't particularly notice a difference yet. However, the market has been running slower or timing out completely on me since I tried this. Not sure if it's related.
Noticing about 15% slower with the "fix" after switching back and forth many times.

Side load apps without rooting

just go to settings-
Applications-manage applications-All-
customizable settings provider- then press clear
data-press back once-find settings-press clear
data-than you should find in applications
"unknown sources"
I thought AT&T pushed out an update on the stock Inspires a while back that allows sideloading in a much simpler way? Settings>>Applications>>put a check mark on "Unknown sources" or something like that. No need to go through those hoops you mentioned I thought.

I'm still waiting for that update unfortunately.
Also, doesn't this method break MMS or something? I'm so used to sideloading via adb that it doesn't even bother me anymore. Only hassle is getting my Amazon AppStore apps on to my phone.
Worked for me, thanks!

Ok good to know. I figured everyone had this update by now but apparently not (stupid AT&T).
yes it does break mms, and still havent figured out why although havent been to worried about it.
Also changing apn settings doesnt work either, tried several even copied my brothers exactly, restored mine from a back up and still no mms.
Have to restore phone to get mms back and lose unknown source option.

And I'm sure you're the one who originally discovered this trick, right?
While I'm sure your intentions are good, how about at least giving proper credit if you're going to recycle information?
Yea this is link to thread of where it started to my knowledge.

I hope you don't have a bunch of data on your phone, you're going ro have to do a factory reset to get MMS working again.
Scott_S, of course not, it's all over youtube... n i wasn't aware it breaks mms either..

Like I said, I don't think you had evil intentions, just that chances are, with this kind of stuff, it originated here on XDA, so when it's posted again, with no reference to it's originator, it kinda sticks out.
No worries. Just for future reference...

thanks... so i tried my mms and it WAS broken. I was able to fix it by adding a new APN with the correct settings. I got it from searching google.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110419091825AAi7Mhh
I did this APN settings and chose it thereafter...
Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: leave blank
Port: leave blank
Username: = [email protected]
Password: CINGULAR1
Server: leave blank
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC:310
MNC:410
APN Type: leave blank
tried em doesnt work.

all i did was create a New APN. after creating it, i chose it as my default APN (dotted)
works for me. stock build number 1.84.50211 CL341719 release-keys
As far as i know, your the only one that it works for, considering i have tried pretty much all apn's that i could find, including backup of my old apn pre clearing those settings. Others have tried doing same thing works for no one to my knowledge.
I've yet to receive the update as well. I used superoneclick, temp. rooted the phone, ran the "allow non market apps" feature and now collect my free app of the day every day. My phone is not rooted/flashed and I've freed myself from the wonder machine. Easiest and most underrated method in my opinion.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Instead of doing this and potentially ruining your MMS, you should call AT&T and they will push the update to your phone... worked for me when I was sick of waiting.
Using SuperOneClick doesn't break mms. It is a different hack that breaks mms. SOC doesn't add the option to the menu, but it does enable it.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
if u wanna do this without rooting just get yourself temp root go to the market and get the unknown sources app and run it. you have to be rooted to run it but the unknown sources box stays if not rooted. I personally have not done this I'm rooted with a custom rom this is just what I read give it a try

Seriously?!? No one can help with small MMS

Day after day I sit around and search for a solution to the receiving a small mms problem. I post on every thread I find about it and even pm but I get no response or just condescending responses. Has anyone found a solution to this? I have T-Mobile and I'm running revolution hd 6.1.1. With the stock radio (or so I think). Please someone help this is becoming unbearable

Maybe being a little more descriptive would help. What is "a small mms problem?" Are the messages truncated, the type too small, are messages not being sent or received, are the messages unreadable, is the text in the wrong language, is the icon lost?
Maybe a little more information about your problem would help someone here recollect a solution they applied to a similar problem.
1. I do not have T-Mobile
2. That being said, I was experiencing issues with small MMS pictures in the first few weeks of xda development for the Inspire
3. Searching, I came across something suggesting you change device information in build.prop to mask it as another device and it worked for me
4. I can't find that information anywhere - but this will do the same thing, masking your device as a device tmous will recognize
5. build.prop will automatically be backed up doing it this way, so if you want to go back after you're done you can - but it may be worth a shot
Here are the changes you need to make:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=tmobile
ro.product.name=vision
ro.product.device=vision
ro.product.board=vision
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC ro.build.fingerprint=tmobile/htc_vision/vision/vision:2.2/FRF91/277427:user/release-keys
6.) Hit menu and Save & Exit. You’ll get a message explaining that the original build.prop file was saved as build.prop.bak
7.) Reboot and try MMS again
This issue has been around for a long time, dating back to windows mobile, there have been fixes found and they work till the next update and then it's broke again. I would try the above. Then if that doesn't work if you really want to fix it. I would find one of the fixes for the WM version and see what was done and see how it can be moved to android. I have also heard that a 3rd party SMS app fixes it as well, nit sure about that though.
It is an issue with t-mobile and you will be hard pressed to find a solution in the inspire forum. I don't know what the fix is but I can assure you if you go to the sensation forum, or others where the roms are not t-mobile specific but the phone is widely used on that network, you will see what is changed by looking into the fix zips provided.
thanks for the responses everyone i will give the theories a try when i have the chance tomorrow hopefully something will work.

(Help) Can't send or receive mms! :(

Anyone know any possible fixes?
Check your apns?

This happened to me when I rooted. I restored the phone and it started working again. I'm waiting to see an ATT specific root thread and then I'll try again. BTW I used towelroot. If you are rooted, did you use the same? Maybe the two aren't connected, but they coincided for me.
Dark , I had this issue after installing adblock. Did you do the same?
Well I went back and rooted again with towelroot, mms worked - so it's looking like adblock - I had that installed previously and I could not install mms. Did this work for you?

The issue with adblock has existed awhile based on a topic in their bug forums . The problem is adblock blocks port 80 for mms . There isn't a way to set a white list for adblock .Most users try to get around it by changing their apn settings with mms as port 8080. This "fix" hasn't work for me , but if anyone is interested in a similar app to adblock ...check out adaway on Fdroid. It has the same function and more extensive options for a whitelist . You can even log an app's ads to decide to black/whitelist.

Changing APN setting MMS port to 8080 worked for me! Thanks!
Omg. Thank you OP. I came to deliver this same message. I just got off the phone with att because changing apns wouldn't work at all so 4 days I'll hear from another att tech that'll ask me to reboot. So it looks like I need to stop using adblock! Thanks dudes!!
