I thought AT&T pushed out an update on the stock Inspires a while back that allows sideloading in a much simpler way? Settings>>Applications>>put a check mark on "Unknown sources" or something like that. No need to go through those hoops you mentioned I thought.

I'm still waiting for that update unfortunately.
Also, doesn't this method break MMS or something? I'm so used to sideloading via adb that it doesn't even bother me anymore. Only hassle is getting my Amazon AppStore apps on to my phone.
Worked for me, thanks!

Ok good to know. I figured everyone had this update by now but apparently not (stupid AT&T).
yes it does break mms, and still havent figured out why although havent been to worried about it.
Also changing apn settings doesnt work either, tried several even copied my brothers exactly, restored mine from a back up and still no mms.
Have to restore phone to get mms back and lose unknown source option.

Like I said, I don't think you had evil intentions, just that chances are, with this kind of stuff, it originated here on XDA, so when it's posted again, with no reference to it's originator, it kinda sticks out.
No worries. Just for future reference...

all i did was create a New APN. after creating it, i chose it as my default APN (dotted)
works for me. stock build number 1.84.50211 CL341719 release-keys
As far as i know, your the only one that it works for, considering i have tried pretty much all apn's that i could find, including backup of my old apn pre clearing those settings. Others have tried doing same thing works for no one to my knowledge.
I've yet to receive the update as well. I used superoneclick, temp. rooted the phone, ran the "allow non market apps" feature and now collect my free app of the day every day. My phone is not rooted/flashed and I've freed myself from the wonder machine. Easiest and most underrated method in my opinion.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Instead of doing this and potentially ruining your MMS, you should call AT&T and they will push the update to your phone... worked for me when I was sick of waiting.
Using SuperOneClick doesn't break mms. It is a different hack that breaks mms. SOC doesn't add the option to the menu, but it does enable it.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
if u wanna do this without rooting just get yourself temp root go to the market and get the unknown sources app and run it. you have to be rooted to run it but the unknown sources box stays if not rooted. I personally have not done this I'm rooted with a custom rom this is just what I read give it a try

well I can tell you it can be done with everything working but mms. my brother in law has the solution and his ego is working on cricket with everything but mms.

Same here. I have an Evo on Cricket including market and apps except for MMS. The autostart/u2nl method for the Eris works on the Evo using the same autostart.sh script (unmodified). However the 3G connection is flaky and times out frequently. Also I get random Data Call error 98 messages related to Sprint stuff still on the phone. (I'm running a rooted stock 2.1 ROM)
I also noticed that during the toast root process I was able to ##778# (quite to my surprise) then it went away when I flashed the whitslack update ROM (upgrades radio, wimax, etc).
The strange thing re: MMS is that I tried the APN backup/restore option which worked on the Eris and it "appears" to work. The configuration settings within the Message application "look" right for Production but alas I still cannot receive or send pic messages. No biggie (I ain't paying someone just to get MMS working) but would be nice to have it working. Seems like overkill to have to create an entire ROM just to get MMS working.
Anyway...it's quite frustrating since the Eris works perfectly on Cricket with the autostart/u2nl solution.
##778# and any other ## command doesnt work for me anymore. any ideas to fix?

Anycut can link to EPST settings.
Chances are the reason it works in one rom and not another is due to the apk's installed. look for differences in the framework folder - the lib folder - and the /system/app folder from your rom that is working the rom that is not.
I belive the EPST settings are native to stock HTC roms and thus not included in a cyanogen based rom (thats how it is on the eris at least). Most people on the phone's true network will never need EPST so it may be getting removed by the rom developer to cut down on space and increase speed etc.
just my thoughts.
I been looking the whole day and i have found many old threads about the same problem in other devices but i haven't found really anything that worked. I know there are a lot of users of unlocked Tmobile Inspire 4g so i decided to create a new thread and who ever haves the solution for that specific device please post here.
Ever since i started using Tmobile sim card on my phone, the picture messages that i receive are really really small. I also had some problems on sending and receiving them but after 2 phone calls with t-mobile they gave me the following settings to set up and fix this problem:

Not to mention there isn't enough info provided. Nobody knows if you are stock unrooted, stock rooted, or rooted on a custom rom and which rom if you are. It is my understanding that you may need to install a custom mms apk that allows you to change user agent or perform an edit in an xml file. I'm not sure, since I haven't done this and it is probable that you won't be able to if you are not rooted.

Without being rooted there are only a few options for you. Do you have the size of the MMS adjusted to the maximum size in the "Messages" settings? Have you tried a 3rd party sms app like "Handcent" or "GoSMS"? Make sure you turn up MMS size in these apps also. The only other thing to mess with is your APN.
There was much talk on the HD2 section of this forum with small pics for T-mobile. Maybe you can find help there.

Still looking for a solution to this this! Any help out there
Don't know if this would work or not - I had a similar problem with a ROM in the first few weeks of flashing (note: I am NOT on TMobile, but was having the tiny mms problem), and I found a guide suggesting to edit build.prop to disguise it as a nexus. It worked for some reason...but I can't for the life of me find this walkthrough. The following steps will accomplish the same thing, disguising it as a phone tmous knows. It's worth a shot (backup first)..
1.) Download “Root Explorer” or a simpler application
2.) Open Root Explorer and go into the System folder
3.) One in the System folder, hit the Mount R/W at the top right
4.) Hold down on Build.prop file and then open it in the text editor
5.) Change the following lines
Here are the changes you need to make:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=tmobile
ro.product.name=vision
ro.product.device=vision
ro.product.board=vision
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC ro.build.fingerprint=tmobile/htc_vision/vision/vision:2.2/FRF91/277427:user/release-keys
6.) Hit menu and Save & Exit. You’ll get a message explaining that the original build.prop file was saved as build.prop.bak
7.) Reboot and try MMS again
Homeslice is dead on. I have seen you posting in numerous threads and forums and started searching for you. Seems it is not the phone that is to blame. It is the T-mobile network. If the phone is unrecognized by the t-mobile network(non T-mobile branded phones) it automatically gets the tiny MMS pic. The downside to his changes is your phone will need to be rooted to make the changes he suggested.
Have you tried a third party app like handcent or go sms to see if they work better for you?
Thanks a million for the information. I will give it a shot. It seams plausible that Tmobile would deliver small MMS to non Tmobile phones.I also tried a Sony Erickson droid mini x10 pro and it won't even get the small mms.

Yes I have tried third party apps and have tried handscent to no avail. Anyhow, that is pretty lame of T-mobile stigmatizing non T-mobile phones. I appreciate you looking into the tiny MMS issue for us. I will give the Homeslice method a shot and see if it works. If it does I will definitely post on here that it is an affirmative fix.

Visual Voicemail will only work or install with the pta or phone APN.
I have the PTA apn, still no go
I'm using PTA APN and have even gone as far as editing the build.prop to match the settings in the stock AT&T ROM. Still no go. Market even recognizes it as the correct device.

I tracked down an apk awhile back for it that worked on every rom I've used. Even cm7 and revenge of mcnut. I passed it on to sean to include with cyanotouchwiz. Go to the cyanotouchwiz thread, and in the OP its attached at the bottom. Use app installer from the market to install it.

Hey everyone,
I was wondering if you all could help me out. I have installed the 7/22 build of jellybean and I send quite a bit of text messages. The problem is, I send a lot at one time and in JB, it stops me after I've send about 4 messages within a minute or two to the same person, asking me to allow this to happen. If I don't say allow, the text message will not send. By text message, I do mean sms to be specific. I searched through settings and found nothing to stop this message from popping up. I love the stock messaging app and I don't want to have to give it up unless there is no way around this. Does this happen to you and if so does anyone know a way around it? Thanks

I'm currently trying to recreate the issue. It's happened several times with normal text messaging to my girlfriend. It basically tells me that I've sent a lot of sms messages in a short period of time. A prompt comes up telling me that after I hit send. In order for the message to send I have to say "allow" in the prompt. The other option is, of course, "deny". This is an android OS prompt, not a superuser prompt. I can't seem to recreate it at the moment with google voice as my contact, but I'm sure it will happen again tomorrow when I'm texting my girlfriend and I will screen capture it, unless anyone knows what this is and how to disable it of course.

Oh, weird, I've never gotten that or even heard that function existed. I bet someone could pretty easily hack the messaging app to remove that limitation. It seems like a valid security feature though to prevent any app from mass texting. Maybe you should just write longer messages, haha.

Yeah, I am having the same problem on my HTC Inspire 4G running unofficial CM10 called JellyTime by randomblame ported to my phone. The easiest way to avoid this would be to get a second texting app and bounce back and fourth between the 2 apps. I was running Go SMS Pro and got the same prompt. So that's the best way I can think of to avoid the prompt for the time being.
Ever get one of those "You just won a $1,000 shopping spree at Best Buy" messages?
That's what this is supposed to prevent from happening to you, so your phone doesn't text random people who aren't even in your contact list.
I would say... put up with it. Eventually the mass SMS spammers will get the hint and they'll stop, at which point someone at Google will lift the limit, unless an app dev fixes the apk itself, at which point you'll have to manually monitor outgoing messages.
Edit: I wonder if someone has tried taking the messaging apk from gapps 4/29 and put it in the gapps 7/26 package? Would be a sensible attempt at avoiding the security block, but not sure if it would negate the security feature itself...
Actually, there is an app for rooted users that I found while using the search feature, called BAMF SMS fix. Check it out. Unfortunately I no longer have the link to the file, but I still have the file itself. PM me if you need the file. It is a flashable .zip

This happened to me when I rooted. I restored the phone and it started working again. I'm waiting to see an ATT specific root thread and then I'll try again. BTW I used towelroot. If you are rooted, did you use the same? Maybe the two aren't connected, but they coincided for me.
Dark , I had this issue after installing adblock. Did you do the same?
Well I went back and rooted again with towelroot, mms worked - so it's looking like adblock - I had that installed previously and I could not install mms. Did this work for you?

The issue with adblock has existed awhile based on a topic in their bug forums . The problem is adblock blocks port 80 for mms . There isn't a way to set a white list for adblock .Most users try to get around it by changing their apn settings with mms as port 8080. This "fix" hasn't work for me , but if anyone is interested in a similar app to adblock ...check out adaway on Fdroid. It has the same function and more extensive options for a whitelist . You can even log an app's ads to decide to black/whitelist.

Changing APN setting MMS port to 8080 worked for me! Thanks!
Omg. Thank you OP. I came to deliver this same message. I just got off the phone with att because changing apns wouldn't work at all so 4 days I'll hear from another att tech that'll ask me to reboot. So it looks like I need to stop using adblock! Thanks dudes!!
