10 posts or less - General Questions and Answers

Ridiculous rule. I mainly use other forums. When I do use XDA I can never reply because I have less than 10 posts. BUT because I can't post I get pissed and leave. Thanks to MDW, DF, and all the others for not having a stupid rule.

Yeh I am finding this issue too. Very annoying!

Yeah, so just dump 10 posts in this thread and be done with it. I understand why the rule is in place, but yeah, annoying

10 spam posts will be removed by the mods and your post counter reset.
Do something usefull with your posts.

How hard is it to answer some questions or chime in on a discussion? Visit your device's Q&A and General subforums and help some people out. If you can't do that, then you don't deserve to post in the other forums.
The rule is there for a reason. If you just want to say thanks or ask a question about a thread in Development, send the member a pm until you get your post count up. Or post your question in Q&A... after searching first.

You shouldnt say thanks in a post, thats what the THANKS button is for. To reduce spam of that kind.
Posting your Question in a device specific or general Q&A thread is generally the best idea.
Some devs don't like it if they get PMs with question "how do i", "why does not", "how come"...
But beforehand you should have worked the search button so hard, your girlfriend got jealous....

post in developer forum

Can someone tell me the reason why i need 10 posts to post in developer forum?
Greets
Probably because they don't want people creating accounts and spamming those forums right off the bat. Keeping the dev forums more focused on getting things working than general chat and I need help etc. Just my view on it.
I thought it's stupid too, but after I realised how stupid people can be, I think it's a good idea. Just answer for a few questions here and you will have the 10 really soon.
thanks for posting this question so I can add another post to sum up to 10 or more posts to finally be able to participate where I would like to Rhobuntu on HTC TP2.
So silly - now they move from Ubuntu to Debian squeeze which is what I have running on my computer and next week I should have an HTC TP2 available for development only. Just - I cannot post !

Don't tell me that!!
I've been posting around Q&A to reach those 10 posts because I want to ask and help on dev forums... :-(
Well, almost there, let me see what topic I can participate and then, if I keep being "blocked" off-of the dev forums...
There are very good reasons why the 10 post rule has been set up, a couple of which have been said above.
Why do you need to post in the dev section anyway? Are you a developer? If you arent and you create a new thread (question) it will probably get moved here.
If you are asking a question, the Q&A is the place

Because your ten posts were not helpful, they were spammy. And if you have a question, ask it in Q&A NOT Development. How hard is that to understand?
well, the question concerns a curtain app, so I would like to ask in the dev forum , where this ALREADY HAVE BEEN discussed in a special thread.
You might find that some of us here are quite knowledgable and therefore your answer could be easily obtained here without the need to post in the dev forums
Why dont you give it a go and ask here ?
Also, if your question has already been asked, there is in all probability an answer there; so eed to re-post the same question?
I can understand the rule but not your argument. What if he has been using an app that has its own topic in the dev forum and he wants to post a bug report or ask a question that hasn't been asked before. If it's about that specific thing it should go in that specific thread.

yes, you have a valid point. However i was trying to put forward the notion that far too many people post in the dev sections without properly researching first, hence the requirement for the 10 post rule.
Of course the OP may have a very genuine bug to report, if this is the case then can the OP let me know if he still cant postin dev and ill look into it.

not 100% true. I mean, when you use a ROM sometimes you want to exchange ideas with other users, make questions and even report bugs / make suggestions. you may not be a developer but in some way, everyone can be a beta tester! it doesn't make sense to star opening Q&A for CyanogenMod7 if you have a proper place in Developers Forum... And that's why I had to answer 10 things around (useful answers!) to use that section of the forums...
by the way, i don't know if the posts have to be useful, but i had access immediately to the dev forums...
hi, i'm a new user from spain, i need 10 posts to write on developers forums, where is in that forum the noobs place! thanks
I think it's a good idea. Learn your way around before posting/rambling on a devs forum. Think before you Speak.
well guess the builder of this forum tried to keep people stay here longer...or what else?

Question about Forum rules

So I went to post in the development area and have been on the forums for a long time.. Just never posted.. And I am told I need to post 10 messages before I can answer a question someone asked in Development.. That makes no sense to me.. I have to post in a section that I have 0 interest in to be able to post in one that I do..
Could someone explain that to me?

Yea but I feel that should be based on time on account and not ammount of posts.. /shrug.. Guess I have to find random things to say.. YEA! to in general to make my quota so I can be helpful..
Yeah pretty much just have to jabber on till you hit 10. ***** about SamsungJohn, talk about tacos, etc.
@fluffster
Which rom are you on?
How long have you had your captivate?
Just 6 more post and you are on your way to helping others in the development threads.
Post your situation in the mod request thread in the forums root general. You have been here long before the noob rule, should have been grandfathered in. daveshaw or svetius or pulser_g2 will help. Zelendel would also be able to get you in touch with them. Send any of them a pm.

I'm also part of this new member minimum. I have been able to post before but had to change my account so now I'm stuck having to wait 10 posts before posting in the Dev section.
You started off well by posting your question here, but I see that the majority of you just want to 'ask a developer' something.
Questions do not belong in Development forums. Period.
Many of the site's Developers come into Q&A regularly specifically to answer your questions.
If your question is specific to a single device, ask it in the Q&A forum for that device, not in the Development section itself. You stand a much better chance of getting a proper answer (and not getting flamed) if you ask your questions in here.
You are welcome to post your questions in this thread, and I will provide whatever help I can, or point you in the right direction. There is so much information available here that there's a good chance your questions have been answered many times over already.
We all need to do our little bit to keep the material in Development sections clear and concise, regardless of what we see others doing
Cheers!

I too think is kinda sucks to have to post 10x first but rules are rules. Been flashing for months now mainly Darky's but now switch about once a week.
I particularly enjoy this 10 post start up. It puts a pressure on people that don't belong to leave. I just bought a Skyrocket moving over to android from my iPhone 3GS and I've found this site incredibly efficient.

That thing is weird...
I have an 8 post shortfall and want to contact a developer with what will be a common question, so I have to send a PM when a reply would be much more effective.
Suggested alternative:
- Restrict 'New topic' function to those with > 10 posts
- Allow thread starters to moderate their thread.

To all the people whining and wasting space on the forums

If you have a problem with someone keep it between yourselves. You can argue with people all you want over pm.
Dev threads are for dev related materials. This means critiques, error reporting, LOGS, and relivent info. What this does not include is arguing with people. Also posts that comment to the op, saying I'm not flashing this because... please no.
Also replying to a question with this belongs here wastes space. If you don't know don't reply. If you do, answer it or post a link to a thread with the answer and then say this belongs here. We don't need 3 this belongs here to every question before someone has the heart to answer it. You're adding to the mess.
Also please read ravers post clarifying the sections. The community is becoming way too whiny and every thread is becoming a flame war.

You're absolutely correct. I, for one, have responded to posts on dev threads that I shouldn't have. No disrespect was meant to the dev it's just seeing certain posts disrespecting the op angered me to the point of responding. I will be more than happy to go back and delete it if I am able. At the very least I will edit.
Edited my post in dev thread.

This is addressing a different issue. The main thing here, we are a community. We all want basically the same things. We don't want to read through the flaming of other users and posting counterproductive things. Yes people will post questions in the wrong sections, etc, but it doesn't warrant 5 posts complaining about it's misplacement when it would take one to clarify and inform him KINDLY it's in the wrong place for future posts. Yes that search feature is nice, and things are crowded, but people make mistakes. We need to be a community and treat eachother with respect instead of whining and complaining at everyone.
if anyone has issues, they can use my guide thread to post them in

Answers from the mods would be nice. Because the community is creating rules and expecting people to know them in advance. The general rules are basic and dont cover a lot of what people like to claim is rules and whatnot.
yeah, this was more meant to address the people just generally being a%$es. Rules are nice and all, but we don't all need to police them, especially if it means posting 5 threads policing them.

Plenty. Answer the question and direct them to the right place, especially if it only takes one post to answer. If it'd take more link them to a more relivent thread.
For every one noob asking a question in the wrong place we have 5 "experts" repeating this goes here wasting more space than it'd take to answer.

FB I don't plan on following others' actions. And I am not saying what he said in the OP doesn't have merit. However, it seems after he posted this he has been on a posting spree in the dev section... adding to the clutter he denounced in this post. Hell he even accidentally started thread today in the dev section talking about starting a Wiki...
I don't know how me joining the IRC channel will benefit you guys or help. I hope to help by answering noob questions so you guys don't have to. We are going to have to do hand holding whether we want to or not... I am resigned to that fact... therefore, I do my best to handle as many those requests as possible.
....As the world turns (starting to look like a soap)
As lumin30 will tell you we have had our fair number of disagreements here, but I totally agree with him. This is a somewhat relevant post, but it looks more towards the lines of "Do as I say not as I do" post. There are plenty of "This is what your supposed to do" threads like this ----->
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1235789
And if this is what the OP is referring to as "especially if it means posting 5 threads policing them."
then please look at date i wrote it (26 aug 2011). If mistaken on what your talking about then I apologize.
Just seems to me that the very thing you are preaching is being done by you.
I'm not trying to spark arguments here.
What I'm mostly saying is cut some people some slack. While it's a good thing to inform people where things should go, that doesn't mean when someone posts something in the wrong thread things only need to be said once, and if it's a simple answer just answer it and inform them it should be in a different section.
Read through some of the old threads especially Raver's roms, and yes some people are dumb reporting bugs that are in the op, or have already been reported, and not providing logs to help. That doesn't mean we need 5 people to reply to the post saying this has already been reported or this belongs in Q&A.
I'm simply saying be friendly. The overall activity of the community has gotten way too hostile. Noobs will be noobs, not that I approve of it, that doesn't mean our older members have to be dicks.
Also my post earlier was a legitimate mistake as I just opened the browser to make the post and didn't notice what section I was in. And As for the wiki I do intend to do it as I feel there is too much to put on one page with sub-pages, and that navigation wise it will make things more friendly for noobs to find information easily with a full FAQ, and wiki pages with full descriptions of roms, how to flash them, and known bugs, as things tend to get lost in the forums. I'm simply working to help out the little guys. We all had a time we were noobs too, just some are dumber than others.
noobs will be noobs, saying that just tells people hey i'm a noob and noobs will be noobs...so I'll just post where ever I like and continue not to use search

Because of selfish people posting stuff like: "yo, I didnt read the guide or the faq lol so plz post a one-click exe so dat i can install the hackz0rz on my phone thx."
Personally, I don't think this 10 post limit is that effective. However, it might deter the worst offenders...
XDA has rules like this in place for a reason and if you don't like them, it's tough really. The rules won't simply change because a few people moan about them.
So you want to post in the development forums? Either it's going to be a question which belongs in Q&A, you saying "Thanks" for a ROM, or being genuine and reporting an issue with a certain ROM etc.
Now, if it belongs in Q&A, keep it in Q&A. If you just want to say 'thanks', there's a button for that. And if you want to report a problem, bug etc. then either the dev already knows about it because of someone else reporting it, OR it's something that can wait until you've made 10 helpful posts. (If it was something too major, the dev would already know about it)
Is it really so hard for you to make 10 constructive posts? The answer to that is no.
The best way to do that is to answer other people's problems and queries in the General and Q&A forums for your device. Now that's really not hard to do.
And, on a final note, as you'll notice here, if you stay around for long enough and help others out, it's only the people who have around 10 posts who moan about the rule. People who have passed this restriction don't keep *****ing about it or anything like that. They simply say, while it may not have been ideal, we'll do as instructed and stick to the rules so we can truly enjoy our time as part of this vibrant community.

If the rule was considered "stupid" then it wouldn't be in place. It's in place in an attempt to cut down on the spam and useless crap which goes into the development forums. There's no 100% way of stopping spam but at least this aides the solution.

Let's be honest, making ten posts really isn't hard.
Unfortunately a lot of people seem to get their ten posts by complaining that they have to get ten posts in the first place.

First of all, wrong section for this type of topic. Secondly, this rule is in place for a number of good reasons and likely will remain, so complaining isn't go to get anyone anywhere. Finally, cheap attempts to increase one's post count beyond 10 (ie. spam) will result in those posts being deleted and a warning being issued. Thread closed.
