I don't have a problem with the GPS in this phone. The GPS is fine. The Compass in the phone however leaves a lot to be desired. I have tried everything to calibrate the compass in the phone from the simple figure 8 wave, to throwing my phone in the air.
After doing this, using a compass app, it doesn't matter what direction I face, my compass doesn't move accurately. This makes using programs like photaf, which depend on compass orientation, useless to me. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I'm on KG6 stock, rooted
Have you horizontally calibrated? If
the compass isn't working, it may be that your GPS isn't working as well as you think. Try running GPS aids version 2 to clear the map cache and make sure you are connected to more than 3 satellites.

I have horizontally calibrated many times. I have also done the various gps fixes, and I have verified the fix with gps test. The compass still sucks.

I actually had a similar problem with my compass a few weeks ago. The compass would point exactly opposite of where it should. (North was South, East was West) I'm not entirely sure what fixed it but after flashing a few different ROMs it fixed itself. Currently I'm running KH2 radio with the KG4 drhonk kernel.

So myself and two of my friends who have the captivate are having the same problem. We get an immediate fix in maps but then when we try to start navigating it will lose the fix and won't get it while trying to navigate.anybody else having the same issue?

Not specifically, but I have noted sometimes my gps works flawlessly and locks onto maps right away. OTher times it can go hours outside without getting a lock. There's nothing I'm doing different between when it does work and when it doesnt. Hope this helps!
I just got back from a 4.5 hour trip one way and was very impressed with the Captivate. It never lost lock and was dead correct at every turn. This was on 100% back roads in KY and OH. The rerouting was almost instant. It was in a windshield mount so it had a clear view of the sky at all times.
I could not get street view to work at turns tho. I was expecting it to show me a pic of the intersections.
Hope you get yours figured out.

Make sure you chage it to MS Based not MS assisted. Assisted doesn't work well tracking you but MS based does. MS Based takes a bit longer to get a fix (only a little bit) but will follow you when you move.
I also have had this issue. I used the gps fix and got an instant lock in maps but navigator just keeps searching for a signal.

Just wanted everyone to be aware that in conjuction with the GPS firmware issue, and the wifi driver problem, the compass also does not work correctly.
Download Google skymap from the market and you can see how bad it is.
What the hell is up with Samsung's QC? Do they not test these things?
Someone please confirm that its not just my device on this one.
What WiFi driver issue? I don't seem to have any issues running mine over WiFi.

There is a confirmed wifi problem on enterprise networks using DHCP regardless of encryption that effects all captivates.
Specifically, Cisco APs.
I too have noticed that the compass doesn't seem to work right. I haven't tried Google Skymaps but I did try the Compass app that's in the market and even after doing the calibration, it seems to be WAY off.
Downloaded a free compass app. Worked perfectly for me (GPS turned off, standing still.)
Sent from my Samsung Captivate.
It works, but it isn't accurate. I know where north is at my house. My compass is at least about twenty degrees off.
My brothers aria is off as well, but is far more accurate than my Captivate.

You need to perform the calibration (rotate the phone in a figure 8 pattern for couple cycles) everytime you use the compass app. After that, it will be accurate. But google skymap is a different issue.
I did calibration every single time, and the compass is still off at least 15 degrees.
And if you rotate it slowly enough, the reading might not change at all.
Mine seems to be pretty accurate (i also know which way if North...)

I've discovered that apps that track your movements via GPS and require fine GPS coordinates do not work well with new radios on Sensation. RunKeeper is a prime example. A running app that tracks your running, including speed, distance covered etc. The problem is the accuracy is bad enough to make it appear as if you've run an additional 1/4 mile per every mile or so. throwing off speed and distance calculations by a great deal. So far the 11.69A radio seems to function properly, with a side effect of taking a long time for the initial GPS lock , the newer radios lock faster but lose all accuracy.
Does anyone have insight as to when this will be fixed so I can start using newer otherwise better radios? Or maybe there's a way around this without it being fixed by HTC in the radios code.
Thanks
Turns out there are other bugs when using 11.69A with latest ROMs. .. one was a stuck wifi bug, I left my house and wifi usually drops out and 2g/4g takes over but nope, it just stuck there claiming full signal. ugh.

So.. to make things more confusing this also happened with 11.69A in the first 1/4 mile of my run today, but then it corrected itself. great, so now I have no idea why the accuracy is so broken.
11.76A seems to be working fine even using my GPS, I've not ran into any issues! Perhaps give that one a try its 11.76A 3504.00P, I know what works for some might not work for others depending on area, but its worth a try. If its not working just reinstall the working radio. I've had no issues with GPS and this radio . Hope this helps.

Other people are having this issue. Do you have sensation 4g? Are you saying GPS is fine while tracking running/distance/speed etc?? GPS works fine for geolocation, thats not my issue. it's accuracy when running/biking with apps that track it.
One thing I haven't tried is wiping EFS.. is there an efs wipe tool for Sensation?

Ok I have looked everywhere for a fix.
On Stock and stock based ROMS my gps works great, no problems, however in any CM/Aokp/Slimbean/etc. My gps is wayyyyyy off. Its not using the gps satellites but the cell towers, it marks me as 1500+ feet away from where I really am. Re-flashed tweaked and it worked perfectly,
I have downloaded every GPS app to calibrate, fix, re lock, you name I have done it but it still will not use the GPS satellites, just the cell towers, This is in Google Maps mind you. 4 different versions of Google maps did nothing.
With WI-Fi on it works perfectly, but I drive for a living and cant be on WiFi all the time. Sucks. Any ideas?

Did your phone ever go to full stock ICS before you went on to the AOSP based roms? I'm asking because I wonder if maybe there's something with the ICS versions of the firmwares, or maybe the lack thereof.
EDIT: Btw, if you install the full stock rom (including all the firmware partitions) and then try the AOSP roms, and it works, please let me know via PM... I've been thinking about specifying that people have come from the stock ICS rom just to make sure they have the latest firmwares on the phone.

Have you tried messing around w/ the gps.conf file in /system/etc/ ? This thread has got some stuff that (at least by the reports of others) has achieved some amazing improvements across a number of different phones/roms/carriers/etc. Not sure it'll help, but worth a shot
No...I have not been on full stock in a long time.
Right now on CM10 GPS not working right. Will do a full wipe and install Tweaked 2.0 and it works on that perfectly.
I will check out that thread and see what I can do.

I just started using Mytracks a few days ago for my bike rides/dog walks and mine is pretty accurate on CM10. The only thing I notice goofy with my Google Maps is sometimes when I take a break and look at my phone, the compass doesnt always show the correct direction I am facing til I start moving again. This may be cause I have the phone in my pocket or on the dog but fixes as soon as I move. Lock on is under 20 secs as well. Did you change the min/max values in the settings?

FFS man. You alone have pimped my phone out more than I can say. Thanks man. This worked. It is now accurate to within 2 meters. Hell it shows what room I am in. lol
Thanks again!!!
To all flashing a non-stock ROM I highly recommend the ADB Push Installer seen here
You have to use the ADB Push file...it took me 20 secs.
So,
I've really been getting into Ingress lately, and my phone never points in the correct direction.. I've spent the last 2 hours messing with settings and attempting to re-calibrate. I can't remember if I had this problem when I first got the phone but I have tried on AOKP, CM10, Carbon, Synergy, and stock verizon ROMs and the problem is persistent.
Has anyone found a fix to this, or is my device just defective?
I can't help your issue but you will love the game. L7 here.

You luckily got an invite. I am still waiting. I had the problem on my first s3 because of all the gps issues I had to get a new one . I geocache while I travel and the compass was so batty I always going in the wrong direction.

You need to manually recalibrate the compass often by walking around until the gps picks up your movement.
My compass is always off when I first start an app like maps. Need to recalibrate it and it should stay good for a awhile
I think you recalibrate it by moving it around in a figure 8 a few times. My problem is different the compass seems to work but it doesnt stay still. Its all jittery and bounces around a few degrees in both directions. Nothing I have tried works if anyone has seen this before I'd love to hear ideas on fixing it.
