GPS accuracy problems with newer radios - HTC Sensation

I've discovered that apps that track your movements via GPS and require fine GPS coordinates do not work well with new radios on Sensation. RunKeeper is a prime example. A running app that tracks your running, including speed, distance covered etc. The problem is the accuracy is bad enough to make it appear as if you've run an additional 1/4 mile per every mile or so. throwing off speed and distance calculations by a great deal. So far the 11.69A radio seems to function properly, with a side effect of taking a long time for the initial GPS lock , the newer radios lock faster but lose all accuracy.
Does anyone have insight as to when this will be fixed so I can start using newer otherwise better radios? Or maybe there's a way around this without it being fixed by HTC in the radios code.
Thanks

Turns out there are other bugs when using 11.69A with latest ROMs. .. one was a stuck wifi bug, I left my house and wifi usually drops out and 2g/4g takes over but nope, it just stuck there claiming full signal. ugh.

So.. to make things more confusing this also happened with 11.69A in the first 1/4 mile of my run today, but then it corrected itself. great, so now I have no idea why the accuracy is so broken.

11.76A seems to be working fine even using my GPS, I've not ran into any issues! Perhaps give that one a try its 11.76A 3504.00P, I know what works for some might not work for others depending on area, but its worth a try. If its not working just reinstall the working radio. I've had no issues with GPS and this radio . Hope this helps.

Other people are having this issue. Do you have sensation 4g? Are you saying GPS is fine while tracking running/distance/speed etc?? GPS works fine for geolocation, thats not my issue. it's accuracy when running/biking with apps that track it.
One thing I haven't tried is wiping EFS.. is there an efs wipe tool for Sensation?

[RADIO]Desire HD GB Radio (kickass)

So I just thought that I would share this with everyone. I flashed the Desire HD leaked GB radio from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996630
Now my phone locks on to the tower it gets the strongest signal from and stays there... I'm monitoring my signal with Open Signal and its currently -75 whereas it would jump all over from -83 to -105 and beyond with the stock radio because it was constantly switching towers. The weakest the signal has gotten is -85 and the monitor has been running for 6 minutes now.
Call quality is fantastic and data speeds are FINALLY above junk since I'm connecting to the tower that is about 3 miles away instead of the one that is at the end of my block (when I connect to that tower, that's when I lose my signal entirely, I'm just too damn close to it). It keeps connecting to the tower that is about 3 miles away, even when I reboot the phone, put it in airplane mode, etc. I'm definitely keeping this device now but I wanted to share my success - I read through the thread over there and it seems to be a winner all the way around. And yes, GPS still has near instant locks.

You do know that radio performance will vary greatly by region so what might kickass for you, might not kickass for me? Either way, thanks for the heads up on the new radio.
I've been using this radio paired with the latest CM7 nightly for a while up in Seattle and it seems to be pretty good. Much better than the LeeDroid one that was floating around for a while.

I do understand this, however radio performance should really be universal on a device, its just the actual device performance will vary based on the region.
Either way, I'm happy its not connecting to the tower that I live right under all the time anymore and my signal has increased by a good -10 to -15 across the board.
does it affect the wcdma bands?? or keeps the 850/1900??
Is there a pd98img file of this for easy flashing?
Personality for me the new m3 radio has been great improvement on GPS lock time. But my cell signal and wifi aren't as good as 12.41 or 12.35. I do live in a city that is relatively remote in regards to cell signal. But even with all that I prefer the new m3 just becuade the GPS is lightyears better than the previous ones.

Nah, have to make your own. I used the radio zip from the hack kit.

It keeps the US bands intact (I still have HSPA) and no, I haven't seen an image zip for it. Its not that difficult of a process though.

When I was on 26.06.04.06_M with di11igaf's 2.0.1 rom.. GPS lock was in seconds.. with this new radio GPS has taken 30 mins and still no lock. Data networks and WiFi were definitely faster though.. but I think I'll go back to my previous radio.

Same here. I use GPS a lot, otherwise I wouldn't mind...my wifi/data signals have definitely improved using this radio.
heh, well, looks like this isn't work well in my area after all, I am in salt lake city utah, might just the crappy weather tho. I will check again on a sunny day.
GPS takes about 30 seconds for me - are you guys using a gingerbread ROM because this radio is made for gingerbread - I am running MIUI, I have tweaked my GPS with the instructions in the MIUI first post (GPS Status I think was the biggest factor) and I get locks in 30 seconds indoors. Accurate to 5 meters after a minute with 10 satellites.
The stock radio got me accurate to 25 indoors with only 7 satellites. Even outdoors, I got 8 maximum. I just checked it. Maybe try making sure that GPS settings are set up so that Google is the SUPL server and run GPS Status?
I don't really know what to say on the fact - I just used TeleNav (BTW, the Captivate TeleNav that I ganked from the Vibrant 4G in ota.telenav.com/tn works on the Inspire as well - its definitely worth it as you gain speed traps, it tells you the speed limit of the road you're on, it even tells you what lane to be in when you make an exit) and it was dead on accurate. My Captivate would have been *****ing at me to get back on Iliff Ave because it curves so much. My Cappy got me lost more times than I can count.

Seems to have less battery drain than the stock radio IMO. I was looking at *1%* on my phone and purposely trying to drain it, I ran it through Quadrant 12 times before the phone finally died. I was losing about 1% ever 45 minutes on the stock radio.
Again though, this radio seems to prefer the tower that is further away (and thus, I actually get a signal from that tower) whereas the OLD radio preferred the tower that is literally .65 miles away - I tested it with GPS until I got to the tower - and thus I spent a QUARTER of my battery life with the phone trying to acquire a signal.
Its possible 100% that this radio has a higher battery consumption for some - but that goes for any radio. Some work better than others for different people in different situations. That's why you flash them all, monitor performance for at least a day including notations of dropped calls, battery performance, etc., then you figure out which radio works best for YOU.
The bottom line though, this radio is made for Gingerbread. A lot of people will sit there and argue that RIL hasn't changed between versions but I am willing to bet that it has. My own personal experience with it tells me that this radio is willing to jump towers if it can't get a good signal while the old radio locked on to the closest tower it could find about 75% of the time.
Anyone that knows anything about cellular technology knows that living so close to a tower is extremely detrimental to me actually getting a signal from that tower because of the way that the signal is broadcast. I won't go all technical, many people have done that before me, but if you live within half a mile of a tower broadcasting 850, you are likely to suffer dropped calls and the inability to make calls.

GPS problems on desire s

Hi.
I'm from Russia. Sorry for not perfect english.
I bought my HTC Desire S about 2 weeks ago on clove.co.uk.
It is cool phone but i have problems with GPS.
Applications can't show my place if i uncheck flag "Location->Use wireless networks " in phone Settings.
I tried to use Google maps, open gps tracker, Yandex maps.
Also i tried "GPS TEST". I waited 15-20 minutes. It finds 9-10 satellites, but latitude and longitude equals 0.
I tried "GPS FIX" but it also useless.
Can anyboby help me?
Is it hardware or software problem?
Thanks.
Are you outside (not in building)? From my previous experiences, I can say GPS doesn't work in buildings (or isn't that accurate).

Same thing here. I'm from Russia too. I've just bought the device, and have almost the same problems. I tested the device outside my office - still 10 minutes to get GPS locked
I have been experiencing the same issues outdoors in south west UK makes foursquare impossible

Have the same problem here
Installed "GPS Test" and it shows the strengths of the signals of the satelites.
I haven't had a value over 36 SNR but it finds about 10 satelites very fast. Then it takes 5 min to lock and it is impossible to lock if you are walking.
Is the GPS better on your devices. Would be interesting to hear values from people who don't have problems.
Hi guys...this is most probably cause by the presence of built-in A-GPS feature....due to that feature DS can no longer lock on it's own...or it means a great struggle...Locking onto GPS requires a great computing power... apparently the GPS chip in DS isn't the top product...
Hey, if you're root/S-OFF, did you try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060963 ?
I had the same issue but it's gone after restart.
Having the same issues here, this is a return the phone type fault, and no gps = key things missing from the phone.
It was hard for me to get a fix accurately but GPS Fix really helped. But definitely go outside to use it.
seems like a-gps has old data, dunno how to refresh it on it's own, but the free app "gps status" will do it if necessary. be sure you have internet access (wifi or cellular), gps is on, and start the app, it should update the a-gps data and the phone should find a fix. otherwise the gps sattelites are transmitting the same data (almanach) but very slow and it takes sometimes 15-20 minutes. the alamanachs contain the latest corrections and without them any gps device will give rubbish as output.
i cant lock gps...any suggestion?
It's always worked pretty well for me.
GPS Fix works wonders.
I have the same problem and I have tested with the HTC Hero as well with the same problem. I have been on the Orange to see if is there problem but with no luck! Trying GPSfix now! I am wondering if this is a Radio problem or a handset problem! I hope it is not a handset problem!!
Using GPS Status is saying I can lock on to 2 satellites in my room but I lose them very fast. I need to test in other places around Newport and Cardiff to see if I can get similar results.

Yes likely as aGPS pulls satellite info from your cell towers. You may still find though, as I do, that even with the best radio, you'll still need to occasionally run GPS fix every few weeks. My old desire never had this. Mine will get a lock in 2 seconds now, but for some reason if I don't use GPS for a couple of weeks, I'll be back with waiting and waiting for a lock.
I may be noticing it more because oranges 3g service in my area for months (t-mobile merger issues it seems) has been so poor that I've turned 3g off to avoid shocking battery drain and hopeless intermittent data services. I rely on wifi. Now I know why I'm not getting a good lock sometimes. I use an off line gps app as I can't rely on orange 3g to let google maps work. With 3g off I'm not pulling down the aGPS data. This GPS fix app (however it does it) solves it.

New to XDA

Downloaded a few ROMs and have been searching around here for a little while now, decided to join. Right now I'm using LeeDroid 3.3.1 (BFS) with Sense 3.0. GPS has been spotty on pretty much every other ROM so I just downloaded angeldeath's northeast USA zip file and I'm going to see how it works later. I still can't figure out why some places within a 15 mile radius I'll have 10 satellite fixes and other places my phone seems to be completely ineffective at locating even 1. I'm curious how the battery is going to last with this ROM.
Thanks for all of the posts and ROM's on here to get this phone operating 50x better than stock
Well, I have no gps signal still. I'm getting irritated. It found a max of 3 satellites but lost them just as soon as finding them. Signal switching between 3g and H constantly which is interesting. I love the format of this ROM but this GPS problem is not making me happy.

If you do decide to try it, I'd go with method 1...
Interestingly enough I downloaded that app from the market and set it at north America then noticed GPS Status and GPS Test both were recording between 3-5 sat fixes while Navigation (google) status was stuck at "searching for GPS". Seems like the problem is with Google not the phone, but I have no idea how to get it to recognize a signal.

Could the "locations" or "car panel" apps cause a problem with Google nav? If so how the heck can you delete them?

Try clearing the cache for maps. Then get a fix with gps status before opening maps.

2.1mbps download/1.5mbps upload and consistant service inside my house so far -- haven't been able to check the gps though. I accidentally downloaded and flashed the "GPS Libraries and AGPS support for HD2 Gingerbread" file last night at 2am when I was about to fall asleep, thought it was angeldeath's file and just didn't pay attention. I was hoping it wouldn't hurt anything and reinstalled the backed up ROM from 2 days previous just to be safe, still hoping it didn't hurt the phone at all :/

I really reccomend trying this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953630
My GPS travails with the Inspire are: Stock; sucks bad! Rooted and a few custom ROM's; pretty good no real issues. The aforementioned + the solution contained in the above post? Wow. I get locks...indoors now. Let me say that again. I get locks, indoors. If not locks it often picks up some satellites, indoors. I haven't tried it as a nav with the car though yet.
I guess I'm really lucky. The longest mine has ever gone before a lock indoors is two minutes.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using the power of the dark side.
Yeah, I think there's something seriously wrong with the phone, which I will spend the next few hours attempting to figure out. I finally got the nav to work relatively well and now it just shuts down whenever it feels like it (the entire phone). I tried unrooting and turning S-on. it unrooted but it's still set on S-off so I'm rooting again to see if I can't get it to set it back on. This is just pissing me off lol.
Followed ace-hack and had the software version 1.32 or something on the phone after I was done, back to s-off. Backing up that ROM right now. I pulled up the GPS with that old radio, RIL, and software package in my house and it fired up and got a lock within less than 30 seconds...no other apps necessary. I took the phone off the charger, didn't shut down on me so wish me luck! I'm going to flash ClearDroid and start from there I guess...with the newest software update for that phone and the newest radio from ATT...

GPS Accuracy issues

Just recently it seems every ROM I use has a problem with GPS accuracy when using RunKeeper to track my running... basically it thinks i've covered way more ground than I actually have so I can now run the speed of a top marathon runner (even though I can't). Looking at the runkeeper maps I can see that the gps tracking is bouncing around, ie, it thinks i'm zigzagging from one side of the road to other as I run which makes the app think i'm covering more ground. For the past 2 years it's been straight lines and fairly accurate. CM9 was doing this and now Android Revolution latest tmo/6.7.0. It did it with two different radios and 3.32 and 3.33 firmware.
I have no idea what to do to fix it ... maybe it has something to do with the gps.conf ? it's using t-mobiles default settings.
I figured out a fix. use the 11.69A radio. the newer radios do NOT work properly with GPS, not for runkeeper at least.

Great! A fix! Had the exact same problem....
Bump!
Ok, this seems fixed for you guys, but I'm running a completely stock (shock, horror!) XE (4.0.3, with 11.76A radio) on O2 in the UK and I'm getting the exact same problem. Oddly, my GPS navigation is fine, it's just tracking in Strava and RunKeeper gives a crazy zig zag trace, showing I've covered WAY more miles than I have.
Any ideas?
J
I too have this problem. It feels like a hardware problem. It has worked fine until recently. I never had to flash any special radio for it to work. But I might try flashing this radio..
Hi, I have same problem. Now I'm testing to sync system clock before every activity by ClockSync and problem seems to be away.
Yesterday I rode a bike and before a start activity I forgot sync clock. After 3 km I noticed that my track is "zigzag". I turn on data a I noticed that my system time is -1.7 sec against atomic time from ntp. I synced time and track was OK.
Somewhere I read that is important to use time from ntp server, not from GPS.
Please, leave a feedback if it solved your problem
Thanks, kayn
Just reboot your phone before using the runkeeper + gps.
I also tried to use clocksync, didn't work for me.
Noticed that android1234567 updated to a later radio (in 15 aug build) and got my hopes up. But it still looks like in the image attached. I'm standing still and the GPS thinks that it has good reception, but it is bouncing around.
EDIT: hmm flashing latest firmware/hboot/radio provided from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348361 might have fixed it. Will do more testing tomorrow...
EDIT2: Ran for two hours and it seems to work! It must've been the old firmware..

Serious GPS Problems.

Ok I have looked everywhere for a fix.
On Stock and stock based ROMS my gps works great, no problems, however in any CM/Aokp/Slimbean/etc. My gps is wayyyyyy off. Its not using the gps satellites but the cell towers, it marks me as 1500+ feet away from where I really am. Re-flashed tweaked and it worked perfectly,
I have downloaded every GPS app to calibrate, fix, re lock, you name I have done it but it still will not use the GPS satellites, just the cell towers, This is in Google Maps mind you. 4 different versions of Google maps did nothing.
With WI-Fi on it works perfectly, but I drive for a living and cant be on WiFi all the time. Sucks. Any ideas?

Did your phone ever go to full stock ICS before you went on to the AOSP based roms? I'm asking because I wonder if maybe there's something with the ICS versions of the firmwares, or maybe the lack thereof.
EDIT: Btw, if you install the full stock rom (including all the firmware partitions) and then try the AOSP roms, and it works, please let me know via PM... I've been thinking about specifying that people have come from the stock ICS rom just to make sure they have the latest firmwares on the phone.

Have you tried messing around w/ the gps.conf file in /system/etc/ ? This thread has got some stuff that (at least by the reports of others) has achieved some amazing improvements across a number of different phones/roms/carriers/etc. Not sure it'll help, but worth a shot
No...I have not been on full stock in a long time.
Right now on CM10 GPS not working right. Will do a full wipe and install Tweaked 2.0 and it works on that perfectly.
I will check out that thread and see what I can do.

I just started using Mytracks a few days ago for my bike rides/dog walks and mine is pretty accurate on CM10. The only thing I notice goofy with my Google Maps is sometimes when I take a break and look at my phone, the compass doesnt always show the correct direction I am facing til I start moving again. This may be cause I have the phone in my pocket or on the dog but fixes as soon as I move. Lock on is under 20 secs as well. Did you change the min/max values in the settings?

FFS man. You alone have pimped my phone out more than I can say. Thanks man. This worked. It is now accurate to within 2 meters. Hell it shows what room I am in. lol
Thanks again!!!
To all flashing a non-stock ROM I highly recommend the ADB Push Installer seen here
You have to use the ADB Push file...it took me 20 secs.
