Downloaded a few ROMs and have been searching around here for a little while now, decided to join. Right now I'm using LeeDroid 3.3.1 (BFS) with Sense 3.0. GPS has been spotty on pretty much every other ROM so I just downloaded angeldeath's northeast USA zip file and I'm going to see how it works later. I still can't figure out why some places within a 15 mile radius I'll have 10 satellite fixes and other places my phone seems to be completely ineffective at locating even 1. I'm curious how the battery is going to last with this ROM.
Thanks for all of the posts and ROM's on here to get this phone operating 50x better than stock
Well, I have no gps signal still. I'm getting irritated. It found a max of 3 satellites but lost them just as soon as finding them. Signal switching between 3g and H constantly which is interesting. I love the format of this ROM but this GPS problem is not making me happy.

Have you tried "Faster Fix" from the market? Also, this worked for me in Android Revolution, but I don't know if it'll work for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12764930&postcount=1
If you do decide to try it, I'd go with method 1...
Interestingly enough I downloaded that app from the market and set it at north America then noticed GPS Status and GPS Test both were recording between 3-5 sat fixes while Navigation (google) status was stuck at "searching for GPS". Seems like the problem is with Google not the phone, but I have no idea how to get it to recognize a signal.

Could the "locations" or "car panel" apps cause a problem with Google nav? If so how the heck can you delete them?

Try clearing the cache for maps. Then get a fix with gps status before opening maps.

Caught a signal, had it lock on up to 8 sats on my drive home, opened Google maps and popped up navi through it and had everything working perfectly ... For 10 seconds. Then it lost everything. I'm less than 30 miles away from Detroit so its not like I'm in a rural area with no signal. I don't get it.

Well, I just switched radio/ril from:
Radio: 26.09.04.11_M2
RIL: HTC-RIL 2.2.0160HM
To:
Radio: 26.06.06.30
RIL: HTC-RIL 2.2.0079HM
Already one thing I notice is that my signal is back to "H" instead of the 3G it was getting with the previous radio.

Well I rolled with the Inspire stock for about a month after purchase, and GPS was the suck up to the last day. Not so since flashed my first custom ROM. GPS is back to what I expect from an HTC handset. That's just my experience. For me, really, stock vs. GPS = the suck.

You're now using the updated stock radio/RIL matched combo. It seems to work well for many ROMs, particularly Sense based ones.

2.1mbps download/1.5mbps upload and consistant service inside my house so far -- haven't been able to check the gps though. I accidentally downloaded and flashed the "GPS Libraries and AGPS support for HD2 Gingerbread" file last night at 2am when I was about to fall asleep, thought it was angeldeath's file and just didn't pay attention. I was hoping it wouldn't hurt anything and reinstalled the backed up ROM from 2 days previous just to be safe, still hoping it didn't hurt the phone at all :/
Driving right now. If I leave the phone on the dash it picks up 6-8 sats, navi starts workin, everything good....pick the phone up for a second and it all goes to hell. What the hell is goin on?

I really reccomend trying this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953630
My GPS travails with the Inspire are: Stock; sucks bad! Rooted and a few custom ROM's; pretty good no real issues. The aforementioned + the solution contained in the above post? Wow. I get locks...indoors now. Let me say that again. I get locks, indoors. If not locks it often picks up some satellites, indoors. I haven't tried it as a nav with the car though yet.
I guess I'm really lucky. The longest mine has ever gone before a lock indoors is two minutes.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using the power of the dark side.
Yeah, I think there's something seriously wrong with the phone, which I will spend the next few hours attempting to figure out. I finally got the nav to work relatively well and now it just shuts down whenever it feels like it (the entire phone). I tried unrooting and turning S-on. it unrooted but it's still set on S-off so I'm rooting again to see if I can't get it to set it back on. This is just pissing me off lol.
Followed ace-hack and had the software version 1.32 or something on the phone after I was done, back to s-off. Backing up that ROM right now. I pulled up the GPS with that old radio, RIL, and software package in my house and it fired up and got a lock within less than 30 seconds...no other apps necessary. I took the phone off the charger, didn't shut down on me so wish me luck! I'm going to flash ClearDroid and start from there I guess...with the newest software update for that phone and the newest radio from ATT...

Is there any chance to be a carrier issue because it uses A-GPS?
Never experienced any GPS problems since I purchased the phone.
I´ve been doing some tests and my conclusion is that the GPS on 2.3.3 is little bit better. For me, it fix better but if in movement, it takes too long.
I use GPS test to monitor the signal... before, I was able to see (not to lock or fix) the signals in my living room. Now, inside the house never get a single satelite. But if you go outdoor, even on cloudy day (its been raining for 10 days now) in less than a minute took 8 sats and lock some seconds after.
it is obvious that if you want a real GPS, buy one...
Never had a gps problem.
i have the same problem! I Purchased my NS few days ago and this is devastating since i use gps a lot, I think if rooting will not fix this, I will sell it

GPS lagg? ?? Never! !!!
Getting a fix with 2.3.2 was a piece of cake, very fast and accurate, now with 2.3.3 it’s an odyssey to get the first one, almost 2 minutes. Any suggestion to improve the time that gps needs to get the first fix?

not really.. the first one has to ALWAYS be on if you want location, with the first one enabled only.. it'll detect your location via towers / network
with the second one enable, its able to precisely track your location providing accuracy on the street.
3rd: turning WiFi on
turning all 3 of those on will guarantee pin point position. but usually i only have to go to at least 1st and 2nd for it. these tips were found in Google Maps
I had a slow gps lock problem when I went to 2.3.3. I flashed the radio image and my gps is working like normal now.
I tried the older radio myself last night. Got GPS fix in less than a minute. I later put kb1 or kb3 back and just takes too long to get a fix position. 1 to 2 minutes and even then its slow at updating my location on screen. Cuts out alot.

I use "GPS status" app from the market.
I know this has been discussed some, but i can't seem to find a solution. This is a great phone, but the gps really makes me mad.
My OG Droid and inc would get a position lock pretty fast. about 15 seconds. the thunderbolt on the other hand sucks... Never have i even seen before the shrinking (or sometimes not) circle around your position arrow in google maps.
This is a big deal to me because i use the gps as the main navi in my truck, i assume lots of others do too. I also use it for marking fishing spots so pinpoint accuracy is a must.
I know and for those who don't, you can download GPS status and see the fix its getting and also reset or update your GPS. This kind of works for a while, but still doesn't get the most accurate fix (but ok for driving) and is a PITA. Also takes a minute.
I have a feeling this is software/radio related, and hopefully can be fixed. But just a hunch as i know nothing about the matter.
Anyone have any other ideas??
I should add i just got 12/12 in gps status. not too bad. and maybe the circle around the position arrow was MAYBE just added in a new version of maps. but still it takes multiple trys when i hit navigate to find my position.
GPS is awful on both my and my wife's Thunderbolts too. Can't get a lock standing outside even after 5 minutes; completely unusable. And, we shouldn't have to download another (non-official) app just to get GPS to work.
Glad it's not just me. My GPS takes forever to lock (has taken up to 10min before).

my pgs sucks as well. I didn't use it much before rooting and flashing roms, so I can't really compare pre and post ROM flashing. Either way, it sucks, can't lock on my location, it get "waiting on location" then "location unavailbale at this time". However, it seems to work when I on pgs navigation after waiting for a while. Hopefully we can get a fix for this soon.
i didnt try GPS much before root either. Don't think that would make a difference. I was on the stock rom just until yesterday and was having the same problems with it.

GPS issues..
I've been having the same issues with GPS. I posted about this in another thread but i'll post again.
I get three different locations from three different apps using GPS. Google maps is off by a few blocks, but at least it shows me in downtown houston (my actual location). My time widget pulls the time based on location, and currently, its somewhere near a lake in Russia right above mongolia. Foursquare thinks i'm on the coast of Lithuania and gives me locations in that area to check into.
I called VZ tech help and breezed through to the L2 support. The lady put me on hold to grab a thunderbolt phone to help me troubleshoot. When she came back on the line, she said her google maps was showing her location as blocks away from where she really too!!
Long story short - she gave me a call back later that day and said HTC is aware of the problem and is currently working on a fix for the issue , but gave no timeframe for when it would be fixed
My thunderbolt is fine. Just did a maps test and it found me in about 10s. I have two thunderbolts and the other one took about 1 minute to lock. Both tests were done from inside my house.
having the same problem with my gps...im going head to a verizon store today!

Dumb question, but where do I find this option?
So it's just not me, mine takes minutes to lock on, after that it's no problem, but that initial lock is a PITA, 3-5 min...
I've also noticed subpar gps performance compared to my incredible from the first day I got the phone.
The Gps status app seems to have helped and the time to get a lock has improved even more with bamf 1.3.2. Even still it doesn't seem to get a lock as quick as I was used to with my incredible. Takes anywhere from 30s to 2min, but on the lower end of that.
Would still like to see this addressed by HTC/vzw. I'm sure there's other people out there having this issue and I know they can do better.
So I just thought that I would share this with everyone. I flashed the Desire HD leaked GB radio from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996630
Now my phone locks on to the tower it gets the strongest signal from and stays there... I'm monitoring my signal with Open Signal and its currently -75 whereas it would jump all over from -83 to -105 and beyond with the stock radio because it was constantly switching towers. The weakest the signal has gotten is -85 and the monitor has been running for 6 minutes now.
Call quality is fantastic and data speeds are FINALLY above junk since I'm connecting to the tower that is about 3 miles away instead of the one that is at the end of my block (when I connect to that tower, that's when I lose my signal entirely, I'm just too damn close to it). It keeps connecting to the tower that is about 3 miles away, even when I reboot the phone, put it in airplane mode, etc. I'm definitely keeping this device now but I wanted to share my success - I read through the thread over there and it seems to be a winner all the way around. And yes, GPS still has near instant locks.

I do understand this, however radio performance should really be universal on a device, its just the actual device performance will vary based on the region.
Either way, I'm happy its not connecting to the tower that I live right under all the time anymore and my signal has increased by a good -10 to -15 across the board.
does it affect the wcdma bands?? or keeps the 850/1900??
Is there a pd98img file of this for easy flashing?
Personality for me the new m3 radio has been great improvement on GPS lock time. But my cell signal and wifi aren't as good as 12.41 or 12.35. I do live in a city that is relatively remote in regards to cell signal. But even with all that I prefer the new m3 just becuade the GPS is lightyears better than the previous ones.

heh, well, looks like this isn't work well in my area after all, I am in salt lake city utah, might just the crappy weather tho. I will check again on a sunny day.
GPS takes about 30 seconds for me - are you guys using a gingerbread ROM because this radio is made for gingerbread - I am running MIUI, I have tweaked my GPS with the instructions in the MIUI first post (GPS Status I think was the biggest factor) and I get locks in 30 seconds indoors. Accurate to 5 meters after a minute with 10 satellites.
The stock radio got me accurate to 25 indoors with only 7 satellites. Even outdoors, I got 8 maximum. I just checked it. Maybe try making sure that GPS settings are set up so that Google is the SUPL server and run GPS Status?
I don't really know what to say on the fact - I just used TeleNav (BTW, the Captivate TeleNav that I ganked from the Vibrant 4G in ota.telenav.com/tn works on the Inspire as well - its definitely worth it as you gain speed traps, it tells you the speed limit of the road you're on, it even tells you what lane to be in when you make an exit) and it was dead on accurate. My Captivate would have been *****ing at me to get back on Iliff Ave because it curves so much. My Cappy got me lost more times than I can count.

Seems to have less battery drain than the stock radio IMO. I was looking at *1%* on my phone and purposely trying to drain it, I ran it through Quadrant 12 times before the phone finally died. I was losing about 1% ever 45 minutes on the stock radio.
Again though, this radio seems to prefer the tower that is further away (and thus, I actually get a signal from that tower) whereas the OLD radio preferred the tower that is literally .65 miles away - I tested it with GPS until I got to the tower - and thus I spent a QUARTER of my battery life with the phone trying to acquire a signal.
Its possible 100% that this radio has a higher battery consumption for some - but that goes for any radio. Some work better than others for different people in different situations. That's why you flash them all, monitor performance for at least a day including notations of dropped calls, battery performance, etc., then you figure out which radio works best for YOU.
The bottom line though, this radio is made for Gingerbread. A lot of people will sit there and argue that RIL hasn't changed between versions but I am willing to bet that it has. My own personal experience with it tells me that this radio is willing to jump towers if it can't get a good signal while the old radio locked on to the closest tower it could find about 75% of the time.
Anyone that knows anything about cellular technology knows that living so close to a tower is extremely detrimental to me actually getting a signal from that tower because of the way that the signal is broadcast. I won't go all technical, many people have done that before me, but if you live within half a mile of a tower broadcasting 850, you are likely to suffer dropped calls and the inability to make calls.

20.06.04.14M is also for Gingerbred. Have you tried and compared with the 140fU?
I am having trouble with the GPS receiver on my phone. I don't think it's an app-specific issue, as I've tried several different apps, including one called GPS Status, and none of them can give me an accurate GPS location anymore.
Brief history: I've used the GPS function before with no problem. Using Google's Map app, it previously worked perfect. I could get a satellite lock almost instantly, and the accuracy was superb. Using the navigation app, I was getting equally superb performance. I have used that app several times over the last 4 months since I've owned the phone.
More history: I rooted it and put a custom ROM on it about a month after getting the phone. I put LeeDroid on it (v2.2.3, IIRC), along with the recommended kernel, and the recommended radio (12.39.60.19x_26.06.04.06_M). The GPS functions worked both before and after the initial flashing of the ROM. I've been on LeeDroid v2.2.3 for about 3 months or so. I took a road trip to Atlanta with my wife, and all of a sudden, the google map app couldn't give me an accurate location. Navigation also wasn't working, so initially I thought there must be something wrong with the updated version of the app. So I uninstalled updates, relaunched the app, still no luck. Thinking perhaps the app was broken, I removed it completely, reinstalled, and still nothing. So, I tried different apps: Mapquest, GPS Status, GPS Tracker, all to no avail. I then rebooted the phone. Again, no dice. Then I disabled the location services, restarted them, and that didn't work either. So I tried a hard reset (pulled battery while phone was powered on). No luck with that, either. Then, I figured perhaps something went wrong with the ROM/Kernel/Radio, etc. (I'm sort of a n00b when it comes to android hacking). So, I figured it wouldn't hurt to update to the latest LeeDroid version, updating the kernel and the radio (probably the most pertinent here is the radio, right?) while I was at it. And then, after all that, GPS STILL won't work right. I even went so far as to delete and restore the location services app itself, to no avail.
My current software is LeeDroid v3.3.1 ROM, LeeDroid v3.2.0 kernel, Radio = 12.39a.60.19x_26.06.06.30_M (the latest radio update from AT&T that I could find). I've also tried the recommended radio from LeeDroid thread, and that didn't help, either.
Could the GPS receiver itself have gone bad? It's strange, the only location data I get inside Google Maps is from the cell towers, which is not accurate at all. I know this, because if I disable "Use wireless networks" under Settings -> Location, I don't get any location at all. And, if wireless networks is on, it's terribly inaccurate, showing me several blocks away from where I really am (standing outside w/ clear line of sight to the sky). Under GPS Status, the status bar just scrolls and scrolls, never giving me a reading or satellite lock.
FYI, most of these tests were done standing outside with clear skies (maybe a few clouds or whatever, but no buildings or trees nearby). A few were done in my car on the road, but that has never hindered my GPS signal/performance before, both on this device, and my previous phone (iPhone 3GS).
I'd take it to an AT&T store, but I'm afraid if the store clerk looks in my phone data, he'll see my software #, realize I've hacked the device, notate my account, and I won't be able to get any warranty support at all. The only thing I can think of is to restore to factory ROM, and then test it and take it in to the store if need be, but I figured I'd give the great folks at XDA forums a shot first, in case you guys have any ideas I haven't thought of yet.
Thanks.
You could try doing a full wipe and re-install as a last resort. But I have read MANY posts in this forum from people who had to return an Inspire because of faulty GPS, so that could very well be your problem.
Thanks for the insight, Jake. I forgot to mention that when I flashed the newer version of LeeDroid I did a full wipe. I didn't wipe Dalvik cache. I'm not sure if that would make any difference. It certainly helps to gain the knowledge that I'm not the only one with this issue...
Try to flash the gps fix that angeldeath created

+1. Link to AngelDeath fix is in my signature.
Thanks guys. I will give that a try today.
Tried the angeldeath GPS fix. No luck. Still no satellite lock. I sat outside (it's pretty clear today) for 10 minutes trying.

If you have a case on the phone, take it off. Some cases cause interference with the gps.

I thought of that, and tried it once. It didn't make a difference. Not to mention, I've had the same case since the day I got the phone (I'm particular about cases and screen protectors on touch-screen phones), and it wasn't interfering during the 2 or 3 months where the GPS functionality was working great.
I restored to the stock ROM found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042
No dice. It seemed to work for a moment immediately after booting post-flash, but now it is not getting any sat locks. I am going to take it in to the store and see what they say...
Hey guys just wanted to stop by and ask if you ever thought it was not rom or hardware related? The US government will from time to time take sats out of commission for repairs and tests. Not to mention they can kill any sats they feel like without telling anyone. Just a thought
Yeah, but your gps usually connects to 5-10 sattelites at once, I'm sure they wouldn't all be out at once.

I suggest you Unroot and run the ruu after calling att to get your replacement on its way. Myself and others have had to do it due to faulty hardware.
I thought I was having issues with my GPS but here's what I did:
Use GPS Status and reset and download the agps information.
Let phone sit near window or outside with screen timeout set to never.
After 5min or so I had a lock on 8 satellites. So now that the device has had it's initial lock it should be able to lock quickly from there on.

Hey, not a bad thought. However, this problem had been ongoing for 2 or 3 weeks, and several of my tests involved another device (iPhone 3GS, a different HTC Inspire, and a few others) side by side, with one working and getting a sat lock, while the HTC continued to fail, so it's safe to say I ruled out the possibility of no satellites available.

I also tried to re-install the agps information. No luck for me.

I finally got my issue resolved. After my 2nd trip to my local AT&T store, speaking with the same rep, I was able to get a warranty exchange in-store. I refused to do that XBM (Exchange by mail) thing. That gets you a refurb, and I would have sent mine directly to HTC to let them repair it before I exchanged my phone for a refurb model. I unrooted and returned completely to stock before I went in. So, I've got a new Inspire, and sure enough, GPS is working. It had to be a hardware failure.
Thanks everyone for the ideas and feedback!
Wow, I just ran across this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101066
Looks like the hardware issue I was having could have been fixed myself, using the instructions found there. I will keep this in mind if I have any issues with my new phone...

Had to thank you for sharing that link. I was having GPS problems on multiple roms and tried every fix I could find on this forum. I did the hardware trick 2 days ago and (due to tinkering) had to flash my rom 3 times of the last couple of days. Each time though I tested the GPS and it's working perfectly.
My GPS on the Skyrocket has been horrible since day one. It takes a minute or longer to lock and then loses lock in about 15 seconds. I am currently using SKYICS. Anyone have a fix? Am I the only one?

agps fix flash via cwm. Google it.
I will be kind.

Thanks. Will try tomorrow. It is killing me that my HTC hero has great GPS on it - fast lock and doesn't drop and the new phone doesn't.

Which skyics? And you might try downloading GPS test just to see.

4.2E Update 6
But it didn't work well on stock either. The only other phone I have to compare it with is my old Sprint HTC Hero and it is quick to lock on and solid as a rock. I've flashed the gps fix zip and will try the gps on the way into work in the morning. That is about a 26 mile drive.... here's hoping....
Check your nav settings too.
Go to settings then location service. Check all three options. Then try again. It should work like a charm!

The agps fix is nothing short of amazing. Mine will lock in to my location, even inside a building, within a few seconds.
The patch appears to have worked. I'll test again on the way home. Thanks all!
Your welcome.
Works for a few minutes and then loses signal and has to re-acquire. I'll try some of the other versions to see if they are any better. In the meantime, back to the Hero and an offline gps program.
Must be something with your setup, I used it for an hour last night and it worked beautifully.

Out of all of the Android phones I have owned the Skyrocket has the best GPS. Locks in just a few seconds. I have gotten quick fixes on Gingerbread and ICS.
Very strange that mine doesn't work right. Can anyone post which ROM you use and if you flashed the agps patch, which one you flashed? Oh.. and do you use a case on your SkyRocket? I'll remove my case tomorrow and test also.
Could be a bad GPS chip. Mine locks in under 10 seconds indoors to an accuracy of 5 meters. It willl hold the lock driving at 80mph. I've tested it stock, on SKY, and on Embryo with the same results. I've never found the need to flash the agps fix. A huge improvement compared to my last phone.
My skyrocket is the best GPS device I've ever had. Including dedicated GPS devices. My skyrocket is stock, with no fixes whatsoever. At 500 miles an hour over the middle of the Pacific Ocean I can get a lock on in less than 30 seconds. Nothing else has ever even come close. Dedicated GPS's from Garmin, tom-tom and others take over 15 minutes under the same situation. Reception in difficult areas, like downtown with lots of buildings around, is also the best I've ever seen. It's really too bad there isn't a decent GPS navigation program for android.
Copilot's maps suck. Sygic has good maps, but a terrible navigation display, and even worse POI implementation. Routing is horrible. Don't even get me started on the problems with Google maps. Sure it's pretty, but it isn't really a great dedicated navigation service. All three of these stress form and features over function.
For great GPS software, nothing beats the old Garmin mobile XT for windows mobile. It didn't have the latest and greatest features, but as far as function, nothing could touch it for use on a worldwide basis. If you could put that software on a skyrocket, you'd have the best handheld GPS device on the planet--bar none.
I had to exchange my skyrocket for a new one because of this issue. It was just terrible - wide open spaces it would just blink for a minute then maybe lock, driving normal speeds trying to use Navigation was futile because it would lose lock all the time. I just took it to an at&t store had them put it next to another skyrocket and showed him how bad it was, in fact indoors it just couldn't get a lock at all ever.
Got a new one and it's flawless, now running cm9.

That is very good to know. I am going to try it without my case and then without it running stock. If I still have the issue, I'll take it to an AT&T store and get it swapped out.
Thanks!

I run this every time i flash a rom or update. I lock onto 10-20 sats with ease. lock on usually takes 3-5 seconds. This is a must have!
