Just wanted everyone to be aware that in conjuction with the GPS firmware issue, and the wifi driver problem, the compass also does not work correctly.
Download Google skymap from the market and you can see how bad it is.
What the hell is up with Samsung's QC? Do they not test these things?
Someone please confirm that its not just my device on this one.
What WiFi driver issue? I don't seem to have any issues running mine over WiFi.

There is a confirmed wifi problem on enterprise networks using DHCP regardless of encryption that effects all captivates.
Specifically, Cisco APs.
I too have noticed that the compass doesn't seem to work right. I haven't tried Google Skymaps but I did try the Compass app that's in the market and even after doing the calibration, it seems to be WAY off.
Downloaded a free compass app. Worked perfectly for me (GPS turned off, standing still.)
Sent from my Samsung Captivate.
It works, but it isn't accurate. I know where north is at my house. My compass is at least about twenty degrees off.
My brothers aria is off as well, but is far more accurate than my Captivate.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You need to perform the calibration (rotate the phone in a figure 8 pattern for couple cycles) everytime you use the compass app. After that, it will be accurate. But google skymap is a different issue.
I did calibration every single time, and the compass is still off at least 15 degrees.
And if you rotate it slowly enough, the reading might not change at all.
Mine seems to be pretty accurate (i also know which way if North...)

I know this has been discussed some, but i can't seem to find a solution. This is a great phone, but the gps really makes me mad.
My OG Droid and inc would get a position lock pretty fast. about 15 seconds. the thunderbolt on the other hand sucks... Never have i even seen before the shrinking (or sometimes not) circle around your position arrow in google maps.
This is a big deal to me because i use the gps as the main navi in my truck, i assume lots of others do too. I also use it for marking fishing spots so pinpoint accuracy is a must.
I know and for those who don't, you can download GPS status and see the fix its getting and also reset or update your GPS. This kind of works for a while, but still doesn't get the most accurate fix (but ok for driving) and is a PITA. Also takes a minute.
I have a feeling this is software/radio related, and hopefully can be fixed. But just a hunch as i know nothing about the matter.
Anyone have any other ideas??
I should add i just got 12/12 in gps status. not too bad. and maybe the circle around the position arrow was MAYBE just added in a new version of maps. but still it takes multiple trys when i hit navigate to find my position.
GPS is awful on both my and my wife's Thunderbolts too. Can't get a lock standing outside even after 5 minutes; completely unusable. And, we shouldn't have to download another (non-official) app just to get GPS to work.
Glad it's not just me. My GPS takes forever to lock (has taken up to 10min before).

my pgs sucks as well. I didn't use it much before rooting and flashing roms, so I can't really compare pre and post ROM flashing. Either way, it sucks, can't lock on my location, it get "waiting on location" then "location unavailbale at this time". However, it seems to work when I on pgs navigation after waiting for a while. Hopefully we can get a fix for this soon.
i didnt try GPS much before root either. Don't think that would make a difference. I was on the stock rom just until yesterday and was having the same problems with it.
BUMP
I'm having the same issues. I love my phone but this is very aggravating. I would like to know if this is just isolated to a few of us( ie our particular phones are defective) or is the a phone wide issue.

GPS issues..
I've been having the same issues with GPS. I posted about this in another thread but i'll post again.
I get three different locations from three different apps using GPS. Google maps is off by a few blocks, but at least it shows me in downtown houston (my actual location). My time widget pulls the time based on location, and currently, its somewhere near a lake in Russia right above mongolia. Foursquare thinks i'm on the coast of Lithuania and gives me locations in that area to check into.
I called VZ tech help and breezed through to the L2 support. The lady put me on hold to grab a thunderbolt phone to help me troubleshoot. When she came back on the line, she said her google maps was showing her location as blocks away from where she really too!!
Long story short - she gave me a call back later that day and said HTC is aware of the problem and is currently working on a fix for the issue , but gave no timeframe for when it would be fixed
My thunderbolt is fine. Just did a maps test and it found me in about 10s. I have two thunderbolts and the other one took about 1 minute to lock. Both tests were done from inside my house.
having the same problem with my gps...im going head to a verizon store today!

"non official"
you shouldn't be on this forum, if you don't like "non official" stuff, btw if you use GPS status you can clear the cache, and download the assistance data. maybe that'll help you guys
Mine gets a lock indoors, away from all windows, under 2 minutes. Not the most accurate, 60ft, 6 satellites. But hey I'm in the frikkin house. Outdoors I get a lock instantly. 12+ satellites.
Gps status helps, but doesn't fix it. So chill dude.
But I just downloaded das bamf 1.3.1 and now its working like normal! In the change log it says edited some gps settings in the build prop!

Sucks. I assume you tried updating thru gps status? Maybe it will work after awhile or a reboot.
Anyways since mine works good now I am at ease cause I know its not HW. I'm sure there will be a patch one of these days.

Running Das BAMF 1.3.2. No problems at all with GPS, indoors, outdoors, or in car -- pre- and- post-root.

Dumb question, but where do I find this option?
So it's just not me, mine takes minutes to lock on, after that it's no problem, but that initial lock is a PITA, 3-5 min...
I've also noticed subpar gps performance compared to my incredible from the first day I got the phone.
The Gps status app seems to have helped and the time to get a lock has improved even more with bamf 1.3.2. Even still it doesn't seem to get a lock as quick as I was used to with my incredible. Takes anywhere from 30s to 2min, but on the lower end of that.
Would still like to see this addressed by HTC/vzw. I'm sure there's other people out there having this issue and I know they can do better.
I don't have a problem with the GPS in this phone. The GPS is fine. The Compass in the phone however leaves a lot to be desired. I have tried everything to calibrate the compass in the phone from the simple figure 8 wave, to throwing my phone in the air.
After doing this, using a compass app, it doesn't matter what direction I face, my compass doesn't move accurately. This makes using programs like photaf, which depend on compass orientation, useless to me. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I'm on KG6 stock, rooted
Have you horizontally calibrated? If
the compass isn't working, it may be that your GPS isn't working as well as you think. Try running GPS aids version 2 to clear the map cache and make sure you are connected to more than 3 satellites.

I have horizontally calibrated many times. I have also done the various gps fixes, and I have verified the fix with gps test. The compass still sucks.

I actually had a similar problem with my compass a few weeks ago. The compass would point exactly opposite of where it should. (North was South, East was West) I'm not entirely sure what fixed it but after flashing a few different ROMs it fixed itself. Currently I'm running KH2 radio with the KG4 drhonk kernel.
I'm new to this but it seems like I need data/wifi to use GPS. Most phones I thought just use GPS signals (I'm on Weapon G2X latest version by the way).
Or is my gps broken? If it is can someone link me to a fix?
You should find threads in here and general forum to help with your problem just browse through the pages

Well you need data because you need to download the map/routes for every time you use the GPS. In normal GPS units like Garmins, the map is already pre-installed into the unit thus you don't need data.
There are navigation apps you can purchase in the Android Market that store all the maps on your phone so you don't need a data connection to use them.

GPS on the G2x seems so broken. It works about 75% of the time. At my house I can get a lock in around 10 seconds but anywhere else it's usually 5+ minutes.
I've tried all the fixes, configs, rom combinations.. it's just luck I guess. My LG Optimus finds several in under 5 seconds and gets a lock instantly but the satellites it sees are not in the same spot as on my G2x at all.
Anyone know why the gps takes forever to lock on when in navigation
Sent from my htc_jewel using xda app-developers app
No idea. The GPS signal is almost instantaneous on my phone once I open up Navigation.
Yea its spotty with me. It'll connect quickly, but ill be driving on the highway, then itll think im on some side road, and be really confused. I rebooted, and happened again, three times in a row. Also tried disabling GPS services and everything.
I would recommend taking it to Verizon to get a replacement. GPS isn't one of those things that's that fixable, its kind of hit or miss.
I'll probably take mine to VZW this week and demand a replacement for a faulty GPS.
Mine excellent has not seen this issue with others...if not rooted I would update to the newest radio...well you do not have to be rooted to do that but update for the latest radio to see if that helps...but I had no issues with the old...
You could try downloading an app called FasterGPS which supposedly helps lock on faster.
mine keeps putting me in the wrong place
Im coming from the droid charge and that and this phones gps is garbage. The only way i can get it to work is to turn on gps 5 minutes prior to opening maps/navigation and hope it will lock. That works about 30% of the time. Other than that no gps for me

The GPS in the Droid Charge I had was virtually useless half the time, but I am finding the GPS in my G3 works perfectly (it works so well I never use my Garmin portable GPS anymore)
Is there anyone else experiencing problems with their GPS? It actually started yesterday on the trip to North Carolina to play golf. I couldn't get a lock on the GPS with google maps for GPS status app. I finally did and it would come and go. I used my golf gps app and after 15 seconds it got a lock and worked all day. I needed to use my maps today for navigation and it seemed to be doing fine until I got near my destination lost GPS lock. I did regain it but I'm wondering if anybody else is having this problem? It was working fine up until yesterday

Well I have tried everything and I'm still having GPS problems. When I do get a fast lock now it will freeze somewhere during navigation and lose GPS. My golf GPS app will take a but but will do OK once a lock is obtained. I can't believe I'm the only one with this problem.

I use the GPS all day for work so it on/off multiple times, I always set my phones with fastergps so don't know if there was a problem on stock GPS info...
Have you checked it set to use 100% hardware GPS and not part software lock etc..

Same, works fine here. I can recommend the app "GPS Status", this allows you to quickly see why you lost GPS lock and how near to regaining it is. There are many reasons why you could have lost the lock other than possible hardware defects.
I have the same problem though. Usually takes below 10 secs to lock but sometimes it takes forever to get a lock on. But rebooting solves it...

I am having GPS issues as well. Received my phone over the weekend and attempted GPS for the first time yesterday. I couldn't get it to lock on at all my entire hour long commute. Attempted 2x yesterday and 1x today, still no luck. Also tried Waze just in case it was an issue with the app but no luck. Really frustrating. I looked on the 1+ forum and looks like someone else reported the same issue. Did any of those other recommended apps make the situation better for you?

Try reboot your phone, switch on data connection and High Accuracy location settings. Under open area it should lock under 10 seconds.
I am pretty sure it has something to do with this buggy CM11s.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I did try rebooting previously but I may have been in the parking garage already which is a reason it didn't work.
Oneplus one GPS problem
I am experiencing the same issue. No gps satellite reception at all. I cleared all the caches and rebooted. Data and high accuracy are both enabled. I ran GPS Status and there are no satellites registering with wide open view of the sky. Can we simply swap the GPS files like we all did on the Samsung? This seems more like a hardware issue than buggy locking.
Thanks! Keith

I have downloaded every app and tried different settings but still does the same thing. It seems to work fine and then when you get close to a destination it just freezes. I get a lock eventually but it goes away especially on maps. It seems to keep a lock on my golf gps once i get a lock. Getting old having to take an extra phone just for gps,
well, I just sensed some time until it gets the lock. after locking the signal, I've found no problems at all. Ingress, plays just fine
kudos
Oneplus one GPS problem possible clue
OK, I tried the following after every easy fix known. My GPS was never locking. I had no satellite signal what so ever! I pulled the 6 GPS files from the newest CM nightly and over wrote the existing files then rebooted. Cleared the GPS state and cash with no change. I then wiped the device and re-flashed the OPO stable cm11s ROM and started with nothing but GPS Status installed. The GPS worked perfectly. I then reloaded every other previously installed app. Once they were all installed the GPS was again dead. One of my apps is causing a conflict with the location services. I am now installing them one at a time and then testing the GPS. So far I have not identified the culprit. I will post an update when I do. My suspicions lie with one of the root mods like Juice Defender or Greenify.
Stay tuned.... This will take a while.
