Kind of dumb but easy to answer NVflash question(and a good idea for everyone) - G Tablet General

So I am putting together a flash drive with anything I would need to recover my phone and tablet at any point. I have odin, a stock EE4 odin file for my charge, a honeycomb rom, USB drivers for both tablet and phone, and NVflash 1.2 w/ CWM.
I have one question about the NVflash folder though. I have been watching tons of videos on NVflashing and so far every single one I have seen for successfully going from one custom rom to another requires NV flashing 1.1 first then 1.2 then flashing your rom(with whatever other instruction following).
My question is...if I plan on staying on a 1.2 boot loader from now on do I need to NV flash back to 1.1 if I ever brick my tablet or can I just NV flash 1.2 w/ cwm over what ever custom rom I am on(flashback honeycomb right now).
I want to know because my flash drive is only 1gb and I cannot fit both files into it with all the other stuff I need.
I tried searching a little bit and didn't really find to much on this.
Also hey everyone! I just got my G Tablet on Friday and so far I am loving it. The only problem I have are the viewing angles(which are absolutely horrible)but for a $200 honeycomb tablet with a dual core CPU I will live with it. I also set a new record for bricking a device with this thing
Take care everyone and thanks to anyone who can help. I will be hanging around here and posting occasionally. Thanks to all the devs for making this thing not suck(*cough* tapntap *cough*).
p.s. The good idea is putting together a flash drive you can carry around on your keychain/purse/wherever that has all recovery files necessary to un brick your device when you get curious and decide to flash a new kernel at work or something(I've done that wayyyy to many times).

If you are on 1.2 & plan on staying on 1.2 then you only need 1.2. You make want to do the version with CWM preinstalled unless you plan on adding the cwm separately.
I use something a little larger. My 650g hd goes where my tablet goes & I also use Dropbox (which comes with 2GB free) to keep those type files in. If I have an internet connection, I can reach my dropbox.

OK thank you very much. I just wasn't sure because every video/guide i have watched has told me to nvflash back to 1.1.

I really like this idea Bob, mind if I steal it?
I plan on including NVflash for 1.1 in my mix as well. The files aren't huge (I just checked 1.2 w/ CWM, it's 100mb) and if its a disaster recovery kit I'm making I might as well have options.

Got Viewsonic G need help with apps

Went to the built in app market and downloaded the kindle app, it WILL NOT WORK everytime I tell it to register its says "not connected to internet" when it most definitely is.
I only need Kindle ( or any eReader i guess ) and a comic reader that works, any advice?
The information is so scattered on how to rom, root, and what not so I am hesitant to try that ( plus dont have extra microsd right now ).
any help would be appreciated.

1) If still using stock firmware then download TnT-Lite Ver. 2.2.0 here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842004
2) Fix market: - Google Marketplace has been added. It is crippled by default, but it's fixable with this hack: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845175.
3) Add Flash: Flash works, but you need to sideload the correct apk. (Update for 12/2) You can get a new version here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...6&postcount=26. And yes, Angry Birds works.
All 3 steps are copy/paste from Roebeet's post in step#1.
Hope this help.

You actually don't need an external microsd card to root, install ROMs or anything. I haven't used one yet. You just need the USB cable that came with the tablet, and there's a built-in internal SD-card storage area in the G Tablet.
As Ricky's reply suggests, most people here are using TNTLite or ZPad. VEGAn ROM is also almost totally stable now (and I'm not sure how CyanogenMod is coming along). We almost all exclusively use these ROMs because they work much better than stock, and because we have access to the full Android market with them.
I highly recommend following one of the Howto threads that explain installing ClockworkMod, then TNTLite, then doing the Market Fix.
If you don't want to do that and you still want to stick with stock, there are several threads on rooting with Z4Root, then getting Android Market working on stock. Some people are more comfortable with that than installing one of the custom ROMs, but I think you're missing out on a lot of great possibilities that way.
Here's the thread I think Ricky was referring to, by the way: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
I suspect this might be sacrilige for this forum but I got so frustrated after calling ViewSonic I decided to put a custom rom on ( before i seen your replies ) the first how to i found was droidpirates tnt no clockwork version and android market fix. If thats competing sites I want to apologize.
I want to thank everyone who develops and the community that helps support these devices. This Pad was absolutely worthless to my wife before flashing with custom rom. NO app that required an internet connection would function properly Viewsonic said its the app funny changed firmware and they worked instantly.
Im getting some forced close errors but honestly the pad is so responsive and have access to the full android market, we also got it on the Sears $350 deal and we are very happy so far. Its a shame they manufacturers rush out this hardware with close to unusable software.
What does the clockword mod do?

Clockwork Mod is a recovery system. It allows you to much more easily flash new ROMs, to switch between different ROMs, and to backup and restore your system in case anything goes wrong.
You get to it by pressing and holding the Vol + key while booting up your tablet (you need to install it first of course - see the HOWTO thread in the G Tablet Android Development forum for detailed instructions).
If you don't have Clockwork Mod installed and something goes wrong flashing a ROM, or your partitions get screwed up (which happened once to me), it's a lot more of a pain in the butt to restore your system back to a working state (you have to use a tool called NVFlash from your desktop).
As a result, mostly everybody on the forums here uses Clockwork Mod and recommends to new users that they install it too.
thanks for the info its most appreciated. I guess when viewsonic releases the update on the 19th there will be new roms based on it so i probably should get it installed and not push my luck. I didnt even us an SD card to flash this rom.

[Q] Malata T2 (New)

Here's my question. Being new to this whole tablet scene, I bought a Malata Zpad T2 from China. Of course the first thing I do when I charge it up is to get all the Chinese stuff off of it, so I installed CWM and first installed TNT and it worked great. I couldn't leave well enough alone so i thought I would try another firmware and I think it was Vegan and ran into some problems. I tried again to install it but when I went into the files on the SDCard there was quite a bit of stuff missing. I'm thinking the whole Android 2.2 needs to be reloaded but I'm not sure? Also I tried doing a recovery when things started going screwy but CWM said there was no back-up to recover. (I know I did a back-up). Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Howie

I have one of these picked up in Guangzhou recently. Really like it a lot. Based on what you've said, you may have wiped out your backups in the process. If you are unable to boot into clockwork, or get a ROM to load on to the internal SDCard, you may have to use nvflash to restore bare metal.
This may help you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861950
The only concern I would have with that is the ROM listed there is primarily for the Viewsonic version. It should still work. However, if you want to use bits more native to our tablet, you can go here: http://2.hot12.115cdn.com/pickdown/...gIdeas_XL_3.rar&key2=32342e3137392e39332e3536
I believe that you can use that package with the same instructions in the previous link. Let me know if this is over your head. You did say you were new to this.
Also look at this thread:

zPad v2's are not the same as the GTAB (or the zPad v1's) in that they have 1GB of RAM. Using straight GTAB ROM's could cause issues.
That "Big Ideas 1222" is an nvflash image - I know this because I've actually used pieces of it in my own ROMs, for the performance enhancements.

Roebeet,
I am currently using a grab rom on the ztab... do you think that the performance would be much better if we moved to the bigideas rom? Also, got a weird issue with the dock status being backwards. Thinks it is docked when it isn't and vice versa.

Finally got BigIdeas installed. Not sure how, as the first time I installed it it came up Chinese? After a reboot it came up in English. Then USB through my laptop wouldn't work so I went into CWM and mounted or unmounted USB, rebooted and now that works. I think my next dilema is I don't think it's reading my 16GB INTERNAL card as being 16GB. I'm at work now but I'll be checkin when I get home. Thanks, Howie

Hello,
Many of us (Malata Zpad T2) still have problems implementing Gingerbread on their tablets.
All the builds i found here are based on the partition-structure of gtablet.
You were gone an other way with new FW TNT V5 based one big idea1222 ROM.
Is there a change to implement this new GB-ROM's on this base.
For Malata Zpad T2 it has the big advantage of having 1Gb RAM and better performance.

[Q]

Recently my girlfriend and I wanted to upgrade her T-Mobile galaxy s 4g to a gingerbread custom Rom. we first flashed clockwork mod and a froyo custom rom, then decided to flash "Audiophile gingerbread 2.3.4" and completely looked over the instructions that said to first flash bootloaders. I have had problems flashing my g2x and our hd2's in the past but thought that as long as I could get into CWM I would be fine, not true without proper bootloaders I guess. now the SGS4g will start up but after the "galaxy s 4g exclusively by T-Mobile screen" it does the bill Cosby sweater thing and starts up normal. but after five seconds or so, soft reboots and keeps looping like that. I'm pretty sure I need to Odin flash but don't know exactly what rom or file and I am having a lot of trouble getting into download mode and getting windows to read the phone. I have ran the Samsung driver software already...any ideas? any info needed?
You're getting that rainbow because you are still on froyo bootloader. Search for FB's EXT4 conversion guide. It has all the info you need to fix your issues. Also try the new AUDIOPHILE FTW ROM. It just allowed me to convert to EXT4 without the partition. So you can probablly skip that step once you get the right bootloaders.
If Odin gives you issues keep trying eventually it will see the phone!
Follow my guide.

follow fb's guide as hes part of team acid and does find nice ways to try n ease some of the gb clutter u have to go though and we do implment as much of what he does into our roms as we can ... but case u still do have issues u do have his methoods as a backup case stuff goes wrong..
Thank-you both for taking the time to help me...I really do appreciate it.
I am having a lot of trouble getting the phone into download mode. do you know if without the g.b. bootloaders if download mode shows up normal or does it have the bill Cosby sweater look to it also? Is there a trick to getting into download mode that you guys use? I have tried I think all methods that I've found online. is there another option if you can't get into download mode...? thanks guys, working on this problem more today, will post results.
Odin will still pick up your phone in Bill Cosby mode.
If you haven't already load up odin with the proper files in the proper places.
Pull battery out of phone.
plug phone and usb into computer
hold down volume up and down
put in battery.
Odin should see the phone.
If not repeat with different usb port.
Keep tryin it will see it eventually

Thank you so much. Your method for getting into download mode worked flawlessly the very first time and every other time. The guide you guys directed me to looked and sounded like alot of work, but when all said and done it took less than a half hour after downloading files. The directions were very simple and easy to follow. Thank you very much! Your help made for a very happy girlfriend . I have one final question...When i got to (Step 11) in CWM it said, "E:Cant mount/ sdcard, and/or damaged sdcard." Q: Can she just use the present ROM (she likes it) without installing busybox? What are the pros and cons to not doing this? I did follow the partition sdcard instructions on a 2GB sandisk. Is there an easy way to fix the card? Thank you again for all your help.
If you don't install busybox there's a very high chance that you won't be able to use the voodoo lagfix which converts your phone's partitions to ext4 instead of rfs, giving you a performance boost.
Have you tried another SD card? Did you format your SD card according to the prerequisites?

[Solved!] Was hoping somebody could doublecheck my plan!

This may not be a traditional Q&A format, but I really wanted to make sure that the plan I have in mind is going to work out for me.
Hi! I'm a noob. I want to flash my first ROM ever after having gotten frustrated beyond belief with how often my Infuse crashes (every few hours I get the triple vibrate to crash). I've already rooted the Infuse and installed CWM though it seems that it was pointless for me to do both of these things as the steps I'm to follow seem to install the both of 'em.
Phone: Samsung Infuse
Carrier: AT&T
Current Firmware version: 2.2.1
Baseband version: I997UCKH1
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Build number: FROYO.UCKH1
ROM I want to install: Unofficial CM10
Steps I intend to take:
Back up with Titanium Backup (Free) - Done as according to ctkatz's thread.
I did not do a launcher backup, mostly because I don't know what it is and I don't believe I have one I'm interested in keeping. Also, I didn't use Rom Manager to make a nandroid backup since in the threads I've read the general consensus seems to be Rom Manager is REALLY AWESOME at bricking phones, but not so good for much else.. Rather, I booted into CWM and told it to make a backup. I'm under the impression this made a nandroid backup. If this didn't, please somebody let me know.
Install 2.3.6 Gingerbread via jscott30's thread and installing option D. And for some reason, this is the only step that requires me to use Odin. I'm not really sure why, if anybody wants to clear that up it'd be great!
Use Qksters EFS backup script to ensure that if I somehow mess things up, I can still save my phone! And to run this I just "flash" it like I would a ROM. Which is by selecting the install zip from sdcard option.
Follow Entropy's CM9 guide to go from GB to ICS And this is just because you can't jump from GB to JB? I'm assuming it's something along those lines. Either way, his guide seems straightforward enough. Also during this step, put the ROM, Overclock Kernel, and Gapp files for CM10 on my internal SD card.
Wipe in CWM
Flash the ROM in CWM
Flash Overclock Kernel in CWM because if I'm going through all this trouble to doctor my Android, I may as well give myself the ability to overclock it
Wipe Cache Partition in CWM I don't really know what this does, but I'm assuming it doesn't wipe anything I care about
Advanced/Wipe Dalvick Cache Same as the previous step. I don't know what it does, but I'm following instructions.
Reboot And I'm supposed to understand this first reboot will take like 5-10 minutes and I shouldn't run around my house crying that my phone broke when it takes a long time to reboot.
Wait 15 minutes and reboot a second time
Log into google account And this gets my contacts back
Restore user app data This gets my apps and my 3 starred all angry birds levels back?
CAREFULLY restore some system data that is green
And after that, I get to play around with my brand new shiny OS and enjoy my phone!
I apologize that this is not a very concise accumulation of questions, but there's not really a single guide that goes step by step through this ENTIRE process of going from Froyo to a customized jellybean OS while making sure you don't lose any app data. It's taken me about ~5 hours of reading through a number of topics and my brain is starting to feel fuzzy, so I really just wanted some of the more experienced members of the community to doublecheck my planning.
Thank you guys so much! Everybody in this community is just awesome for dumbing this process down for those of us who do not understanding the inner workings of a computer : ). I'm very appreciative!
You have pretty much the right idea.
There's a few pointer i would suggest. Back up your contacts to google. Save all your photos to your PC.
When you are making the move from 2.2.1 to 4.1.2 or 4.2, I would start it all new. I would not restore anything you had in froyo (2.2.1) to 4.1.2.
With that in mind, put your phone into download mode, flash jscott's gb with bootloaders.
Flash cm9 and then cm10 as instructed on their ops or andros's write up.
Also I noticed you have a step about flashing the OC kernel, but OC has now been integrated into the kernel that comes with the build.
And as qkster stated, avoid restoring data. If there is something essential you do not want to lose you may restore data for that specific app and in case you start having issues, you know what to blame.

Luckily, the guide I read on backing up suggested both of those things, so I've done those.
I'm underway! I managed to successfully install the option D from jscott, but I'm a little confused on how to flash the bootloaders. Do I need to put my phone back into download mode to use Odin again? I tried that, and Odin doesn't seem to want to recognize my phone.
And sadly, I can't skip out on the bootloaders as I'm sure you guessed. Upon trying to go to CM9 I failed miserably due to rainbows. I actually used your guide to get back to well, stock UCLB3, and from there I've been trying to get the bootloaders on by putting my phone in download mode.
With no luck, sadly. Odin just doesn't want to show my phone as connected. Kinda stuck at the moment!
EDIT: I re-read the guide of yours I followed and saw that all I had to do was flash the thing a second time with the install bootloaders box checked. Unfortunately, I've done that, and I can clearly read the words "Uploading SBL...SBL upload failed!" on my screen.
Doesn't take much of a genius to figure out that the BL likely stands for bootloaders, so now I'm slightly freaking out. Heimdall One-click is currently trying to end the session. I'm of course going to let it go as long as I can hoping that it ends things nicely as I'm terrified to try turning anything off at this point. Hopefully I didn't just permanently destroy my phone =\
Andros: Oh thank you for saving me from the OC mishap. I suppose there's some good in me not having gotten that far yet due to problems!
EDIT 2: I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! I swapped my USB ports around a bit and kept trying with your Heimdall One-click stuff and finally got the bootloaders in! Once that went through the rest was easy as pie : ) Everything's going smooth, I'm currently installing JB Gapp stuff, then I'm going to follow the rest of my ROM guide and I don't forsee any issues. Thank you guys again, both of your guides and your responses were very helpful!
I want to thank YOU arguro. If everybody had the patience and intelligence to so thoroughly research what they wanted to do there would be so many less help I bricked my phone threads and a whole lot less irritated developers.
You went into the process with the right amount desire / fear. Glad you made it and welcome to jellybean!

I know but I saw a video on youtube about it so i tried it and it just keeps restarting. Would you mind explaining how to do that because it I can't connect my phone to the computer it turns off every 15 secs and I can't go into recovery mode either.
The good news is that it is nearly impossible to "hard brick" an SGS4G. That you are seeing it repeatedly trying to start up tells me that it's more that you just have improper firmware on your device.
Take a look a the heimdall "one-click" collection http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498

The most difficult thing about using them is getting the right drivers installed on your computer for your phone (and ROM).

Google samsung usb download jig. You can buy one or make your own for just a few bucks. There is a thread or two on xda on making one. Couple of threads on how to get into download mode too.

"Device not recognized" is Windows' polite way of saying that it can't make sense of drivers. I have a few polite things to say about Window's handling of drivers, but let's just say that it is tweaky, at best, and you apparently can only have one set of "similar" drivers installed at a time. You will have to work with the drivers once you get Download Mode under control.
That is is still rebooting seems to suggest that you don't have the power off / hold volup/vol dn / plug in USB sequence quite right.

Thank you I just fixed it. I thought I was screwed thanks so much!! Do you know anything good to put on the device that is for the sgs4g because the last time I put the wrong ones and it ended up how it did. I tried valhalla final do you know any better ones.
I'm glad you got it going again! With luck, you won't have to try that again, but it is a great device to play around with as it is rather hard to get it to "hard brick" to the point where you can't get it into download mode and start again. Just keep lots of backups
There are lots of great ROMs out there for this device, in a few different flavors. You generally need to be careful how you upgrade between the flavors, especially as the big upgrade steps are often taken for granted by current ROMs
Froyo (I'll go out on a limb and say you don't want this)
Gingerbread, BML
Gingerbread, MTD
Ice Cream Sandwich (MTD only, I believe)
JellyBean (MTD only)
BML is the "stock" low-level disk routines used by Samsung ROMs, as well as some custom Gingerbread ROMs. MTD is an open-source alternative to BML that is popular with later Gingerbread ROMs, as well as probably all ICS and JB ROMs. If you are going to use an MTD ROM, you should find a solid MTD Gingerbread ROM to do the switch-over from BML to MTD to make sure it goes smoothly.
I can't really say which is "best" between all the ROMs. There are many good ones out there. A lot of people will have which ROM they use or like in their signature.
With any ROM, read the main thread to see what things might not work for you if you try the ROM.
Some of the general things that are pretty much universal are:
ICS
WiFi Calling doesn't work
Indicated WiFi signal level appears lower
JB
Built-in GPS doesn't work
WiFi Calling doesn't work
Indicated WiFi signal level appears lower

It is true that you can't install Clockwork recovery by itself on the SGS4G. However, the custom kernels have either CWR or TWRP "built in" to them. (On the SGS4G, kernel and recovery bound together and flashed as a single unit.)

Well, that is quite a first ROM to try to flash! Let's see, it says "beta" in the header, it's been out for under 24 hours, people are reporting difficulties flashing it, it has a different partition structure than any other SGS4G ROM, oh, and it's the first KitKat ROM for the phone, so the Android part of the phone is very different and potentially still has major bugs. I think you're in for a world of hurt if you try something that hasn't stabilized to the point that people are generally successful with it, especially if you aren't comfortable with the whole flashing process yet.
I'd suggest one of the well-proven ICS ROMs as a start. The are relatively robust in their ability to install and generally perform very well on the phone. Take a couple weeks with it to know how it performs on the phone for you and then look again at what you might want to try out.
While you can generally upgrade your data from one Android release to the next using a tool like Titanium Backup, going back is dicey, at best. I didn't decide to upgrade my day-today phone from GB to ICS for quite some time after the ROMs were available for just that reason. I'd hate to find out that there was a show-stopper bug and I couldn't go back to GB without losing my data.

That makes sense I'll wait for slim kat until the bugs have been fixed and until I get the hang of this.SO just to be certain I should start from ics then move up to jelly bean?
It's my personal opinion that the GB and ICS ROMs are the most stable and reliable for "daily driver" phones. Others like the JB experience. KitKat has a lot of potential, but I'd wait a bit until it settles down. The first few releases on any new Android version are generally a bit rough, even when from the best of devs.
The AntonX Basic kernel from the heimdall one-click thread should get you what you need to get started.
I'm a little puzzled though, how you flashed the first ROM if you didn't have CWR or some other recovery already installed. If it was ROM Manager that you used, it definitely would have caused problems (and will if you use it again).

ok so I decided to go for slimkat 4.4.2 and I actually installed it correctly but I don't have the google play store and all that I tried to install gapps but not sure if I had the right version. When I was flashing them it said installation successful but when the phone rebooted it says the applications stopped working.

Hullo man (or mam) I'm the tooth cavity bringer as u can see (w kitkat or sth like that). For your issue, I think you first should get used to installing custom ROM on this phone first, with Recovery: backup & restore procedure, flashing zip,... and heimdall oneclick procedure as jeffsf has been avised you tho before installing kitkat. And yeah, a user got Playstore work out by heimdall oneclick back to stock, and follow my instruction in the slimkat thread again carefully (super clean install) so you can try if you know what you are doing then.
If you are feeling confused and frustrated w the instruction and bugs that might happen to your phone, you can/should flash sth considered stable first like ICS ROMs (that Jeffsf recommended) w Jeffsf's kernels as they are easier to flash and almost bug-free .

thanks for the suggestions I installed slimkat but I didn't have the play store because I forgot to flash the gapps now I finally got everything working it runs pretty smooth. I wanted to challenge myself so I chose the harder one and I did okay.
