Issues with sdcard vs _EXTERNALSD

I know that LG chose to have this stupid method of utilizing there internal memory and naming it (sdcard) and then making our ACTUAL sdcards (_ExternalSD), but I'm getting super annoyed at the issues that are occurring due to this ridiculous method of partitioning.
Main Issues:
> Apps not looking at the correct place
> ROM manager only able to access ACTUAL sdcard but things are put in "sdcard" not _EXTERNALSD
> Files don't transfer between the two places (sdcard v _EXTERNALSD)
This is just a big cluster F#$*.
Does anyone know if there is a way to partition the "sdcard" internal phone memory and make the ACTUAL sdcard used the way it is on other phones?
I found a temporary solution. If you go into X app, X being whichever app uses storage or the ACTUAL sdcard, you can switch the storage to sdcard instead of phone.
Apps that have option:
> Browser (stock)
> Titanium Backup
> Camera App (stock)
I thought it was just me.. but i hate this implementation. This is my first phone having built in storage and I actually thought that was the way it was supposed to work.. and thought it was pretty lame. So when I switched to a CM7 rom.. i was totally thrown. LOL. but I agree. the whole "_External..." thing is lame..
DOPE phone otherwise tho.
Not a big deal for me

It really is highly annoying. Especially since I am coming from an HTC Inc.
I don't know what genius thought this was a good idea.
I agree and also think its cause some of the issues when loading rom's back and forth with CWM
As you can see from my sig, I've been almost exclusively HTC and this was a super weird thing for me to get used to. I'll flash CM7 once it's RC or stable, just because of this.

ditto.. i've always love htc hardware man. quality stuff. I came off of a G2 and bought this thinking it would be a big step up (you know.. dual cores n all).. it's an incremental update with some drawbacks. don't get me wrong.. i like the g2x.. but it has some flaws. meh. I'm here now... nothing I can do about it.. cuz i'm certainly NOT going to sell it to go back to the g2 just for netflix when the future of smartphones is clearly headed the g2x direction.
I also agree...it isn't a deal breaker, but it certainly is a strange approach.
I can only assume they wanted the internal storage to be the "main" and any external just to be extra space that the phone wasn't dependent on.
the GOOD thing about it is that is doesn't wipe when you format the phone.. the bad thing is... you can't get to it in CWM
I haven't fought with CWM, but how is this different than other Android phones?
My G1 had nothing, so no issue. But, the Vibrant did essentially the same thing - it had a different naming structure, but the effect was the same.

On my HTC Inc., they were completely separate. The external SD card's path was not through the internal. When you downloaded an app., all files for that app. went on the external SD card and not on the internal. It left the internal clean for music, photos and videos.
has anyone figured out an appropriate method of sorting this out,
i have a few apps which rely on content that is stored on my actual sd card about 10gb of content, but the internal memory takes the /sdcard ,, while the sd card is /sdcard/ext this is so aggravating, are there any customs build which target this?
I am having issues with this as well. When I boot into CWM to flash a kernel for example CWM only sees what is on the External SD not the internal so I have to transfer kernels that I have downloaded on the phone to my extern SD. The only problem is every time I try and copy and paste something from sdcard to External SD Astro tells me there was a ' move error' and I am unable to move anything....
anyone have this problem?
Make sure you are copying and not cutting (moving). Android doesn't like to move things between file systems.

[Q] Camera / Video no smooth preview / video recording

Hello,
my girlfriend got her new HTC Desire S 2 weeks ago. I have one since it is available in our country. I rooted it and put the same ROM (the newest Galnet from MIUI) on both devices.
The first thing we noticed was the different color saturation of the devices, which is not that big deal (perhaps someone has a solution?).
But a really annoying thing is that on my girlfriends phone the camera app is not able to preview everything like it should. It only updates the screen if some user interaction is done. Touching the screen, ... . If i open the camera app the same thing happens, it even records only 1pic (or less) each second.
I restored the backup but with the original ROM everything is working. Reflashing of MIUI or using another version doesn't solve that problem.
I hope someone has a good hint or a solution for that problem?
Thanks in advance.
Hardware acceleration?!
We also found out that she is not able to watch videos. They look like a slideshow. 1 image a second or less....
It seems that there is a problem with the hardware acceleration?
I did a full wipe (i even formated system / data / cache) so nothing from an old rom can cause this problem.
Are there different chips build into our HTC Desire S. or what can cause these problems?
I hope someone can answer these questions. Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Mike
I have same problem discussed here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1397883
there is no solution for it now ((
Did you had the same problem before you switched the ROM?
I had the problem with slow SD card. Video play was quite smooth but sometimes it was not synced with audio. When I changed SD card to class 10 from class 2 its muuuuch better.

I am pretty sure it's not the sd because youtube videos are lagging too, and they are cached in the RAM (i think). Camera and video preview are also lagging and the preview itself has nothing todo with the sd card too.
But thanks

CM7-fixes-for-sdcard-issues, VERY IMPORTANT

I want to give everyone a heads up about a series of fixes JC Sullins has created for CM7 running on the HP TouchPad. It is important that you go to his thread "CM7-fixes-for-sdcard-issues", in the rootzwiki/Touchpad forum and read the whole thing. I would post the direct link, but I don't have enough posts here yet to be allowed. Maybe one of the moderators can help out with that. I'm trying to spread the word about this important issue.
If you are having to move apps off onto your SD card because you are running out of internal memory, you have hit the 50+ app limit on your SD card, you are in serious trouble. JC also created a fix for something that is not working in CM7 called
fsck_msdos. This routine is supposed to check your SD card and fix any errors it finds. It turns out that the version in CM7 as released does not work. JC's fixes take care of that, the internal memory problems and the 50+ problem.
However, if you do nothing else, do his fsck fix and protect your SD card. Go read the thread and tell all your friends who are running CM7 or for that matter any Android rom cause they are all based on some version of CM7.

[Q] exFAT SD issues on JELLYTIME for DHD/Inspire 4G 4.3 Beta 2

Starting with JellyTime 4.3 (ALL builds), my exFAT SD card mounts automatically but it keeps crashing most apps when they try to get access to it. Examples of them can be:
Gallery
Camera
Play Store
Trying to open a notification ringtone also brings this error.
It always gives the following message:
Unfortunately, the process android.process.media has stopped.
Click to collapse
Also, after boot, this message is displayed several times.
JT 4.2 did not support automount of exFAT SD cards. JT 4.3 does mount the card but it is mostly visible only to file explorers like ES File Explorer. When the card is ejected, the errors stop. I know this ROM is based on CM 10.x and that the CM team recently implemented exFAT mounts, not sure if @randomblame is aware of this.
I suspect the default cache for exFAT formatted SD cards should be modified, but that is just a vague hypothesis. The problem is not present if a FAT32 SD card is inserted. Since this version of JT is mounting exFAT cards automatically, I consider further work should be done for full support of exFAT SD cards. Otherwise, the developer should remove the automatic exFAT mounting of SD cards and notify this feature is not supported.
Attached is a bug report taken with adb logcat of my phone running JellyTime 4.3 Beta 2. I originally wanted to post this issue in the OP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778202 so I can have some feedback from the developer and other people who might be interested on having exFAT SD cards working in their phones, but since I am new to here, I can't post in a development thread yet.
Any ideas?
I keep posted to this rom's thread and I haven't seen anybody mentioning this issue. I hope I can have some feedback from @randomblame in the near future. Patient I am, at least.
No changes... so far?
I have tested the 4.3 Beta 2 to 6 versions of this ROM but still experiencing the same results. I also decided to give it a shot to the 4.4 Trainweck 1, 2, and 3 versions; with no luck. I am trying 4.4 Beta 1 tomorrow and see if this time around I get to see some kind of improvement. Apparently, nobody else is aware of this issue but me. I really, really hope @randomblame could get to see this thread. If anybody can PM to tell him about it or show me how to, I'd highly appreciate it.
Thank you!
That's a lot of annoying mentions for a super small bug. Ever consider reformatting the card to a supported fs

I know the super basic FAT32 works, but exFAT has many advantages compared to FAT32, ext3, and ext4 that I use to the most. Large files, multi OS native support and so on. I use this microSD card across other devices with no problem at all, but only this phone likes to play to the black sheep. Please take a look to the logcat or let me know what else can be done to debug this issue. At the end, this "small bug" is exactly the same many users reported when 4.4 Trainweck 1 and 2 was out, so you can imagine how annoying it can be to have that crash message randomly popping up even when texting The only difference is that they probably were using a "supported" file system.
Thank you!
My experience with 4.4 Beta 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Hoping to find a surprise fix to this bug in one of those builds encouraged me to try them. @randomblame: I must agree with everybody else that Beta 4 seems to work flawlessly and that the notion of a RC feels closer than ever; but please, would you try to find a possible solution to this "super small bug" (just like you mentioned it above)? This would really make of this ROM the ideal daily driver for the needs I have.
Thank you in advance!

Need help fixing /datadata in 4.4.3

Hey guys and gals!
Is there any quick fix to increase the size of /datadata, or could it be symlinked to a partition on the SD card?
Here's my issue thus far:
Anytime I've ever installed/flashed 4.2 and up on the Infuse, I get continuous force closes after about 24 hours. I've traced it to the fact that /datadata fills way too fast, and I don't know of any "quick fix" other than formatting the partition in CWM and starting over again.
Any help or info would be greatly appreciated!

My issue here is that I want to utilize as much internal storage as possible before attempting to use SD card space.
I'm running the latest nightly of Carbon 4.4.3, have only about 100 apps total, including the Gapps package (BaNkS full, about 90mb), and I've already uninstalled the "data hog" apps like G+ and Bitstrips.
This has been going on for a long time and has been the #1 reason I've stayed with 4.2 or earlier ROMs.
If I could get help figuring out how to fix this hurdle, it would make KK a lot more usable to me.

I have same issue right off the bat once I leave GB stock for one of the game I was playing.. such a data hog (250-300MB). I end up installing new rom to test then revert back to GB stock to play the game. I don't want to bother with symlink to external sdcard since mine is a class 2. Using it to backup stuff only. Would love to see this issue fixed or easier remedy to do it yourself. I tried JoyOS rom which got nice feature for symlink to sdcard int/ext built in which solved the issue. The rom got some other issues for me to use it and not being work on anymore. Definitely would love to see dev for other rom to add symlink feature.
I think I've found something that works....maybe.
App is on play store and is called "Cache Apps to SD".
So far it seems to be doing what I need it to by moving data from /datadata to my external 4GB SD card.
Why external? Idk... can't be very secure in the case of someone stealing your phone and getting private data from the external SD... but it seems to be doing something good.

Cool.. thanks. Will check it out once I get better SD card for this method.
I only have a class 4 4GB SD card, and it seems to be working so far.
Will post screenshot of current partition amounts shortly.

I would think you could use a half gigabyte card if you wanted to, it's more than the 350mb allocated.
And so far so good, no decrease in speed or smoothness that I can detect yet, and it's slowly moving all the stuff from /datadata to a folder on the SD.

It's straightforward in theory, but setting it up might be a little tough.
First pic shows my setting. I have it set up to use /storage/sdcard1, which is a class 4 4gb card... Nothing fancy and it works really well so far.
Second screen shows any extra settings, which all I have is to hide the notification when it's done starting up.
Fairly simple to use.
You'll notice that it will make a folder on the SD for itself and start putting data into it.

Class 10 is perfectly fine. It won't use the entire 32gb, of course...
I'm just using the class 4 card and I notice no loss in performance.
Sent from my forehead using Jedi mind tricks...
So, after a few days of use I realized it's not working as well as I'd hoped.
I got ballsy and decided to reinstall G+.
Big mistake!
I saw /datadata dwindle to a heart breaking 11kb right after install.
Then a SuperSU update took SU away from the app...
Not pleased at this point, but I can't blame the developers.
Sent from my forehead using Jedi mind tricks...
I'm thinking of trying something different:
Symlink /data/data to /data and make it use that partition, then maybe give the 350mb back to /system, allowing more breathing room for Android.
What say you?
Sent from my forehead using Jedi mind tricks...
I think the stuff in /data/data used to be in same place as /data itself since I don't see it in GB stock version. The apps and games I installed wouldn't take over 900MB. 300MB would be a reasonable size for them all and the rest has to be data the app and game generate. This would explained why my memory hog game was able to install w/o out issue but has trouble in new rom when those data got split to it own folder partition.
OK, fresh install of Carbon 6/22...
Typed "df" in terminal and took a screenshot.
Haven't started any real apps yet, but I'll post a screenshot when I do.

There's this:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/39718-workaround-for-small-datadata-partition/
This brings the contents of /data/data back into the fold (not it's own partition). I guess it was split originally (not sure when) to avoid lag, but it doesn't really make sense for this phone because it's all on the same internal SD card.
EDIT: There is also the Ext4All app that (supposedly) does this for you:
