Thank you for the link, and one other question, will rooting/flashing it affect the way I have my phone set up and keeping all of my stuff? Like is it restoring my phone?

I would say go for the legendary cyanogen mod first. See the power of android first, realize what aspects are important to you, then maybe try a different rom. Or just stay with CM like so many 100s of thousands of others

1. Changing roms wipe your phone? 2. Whats CM?
EDIT---
Dumb question('s), question has been revised in the first post.

Here's a quick glossary:
ROM: essentially an operating system for the phone. CM7, Miui, Weapon, Eaglesblood, are all ROMs.
Recovery: Recovery mode, accessed by holding power and volume-down while booting up the device. Most notible for ClockworkMod Recovery (abbreviated CWM), a custom recovery mode that lets you do lots of modding-related things.
Wipe: Formatting various parts of the phone's memory, necessary when installing new things. For a run-of-the-mill flash (anything other than a new ROM) just wipe Cache and Dalvik, the latter is under the Advanced option in CWM. For a new ROM, do the above but also wipe Data (factory reset) and System (under Mounts and Partitions in CWM)
Kernel: In the context of phones, this is a system change that lets you undervolt and/or overclock the CPU. Lets you save battery and increase performance respectively.
NVFlash: A tool used to flash CWM onto the phone.
Root: Access to the entire phone's system as opposed to being locked out to part of it as is the default. Lets you run special Root-only apps.
The Android Development board here is pretty definitive as far as roms go, the only significant one not hosted here is Whitehawkx's MIUI port which IMO is better than the one here.

The help is greatly appreciated, I picked some of that up just spending an hour reading up on wiki and android and surfing the threads, but again thank you.
My revised question still stands, what is the BEST ROM out there if there is one, and what is the BEST kernel out there if there is one.

For me the stability of the phone is the most important, so the appearance of it will come second. I am using a rooted build of gingerbread 2.3.3 and so far it has been working flawlessly, my phone before I flashed it with the rooted ROM gave me like at least 1 problem a day, so far I am clear and it has almost been 24hr. If it stays its course I am not looking into anymore ROM's, if it does show the same signs I will search for the next best ROM.
But again, I appreciate your input, I am keeping an eye on the ROM you named and a few other, cheers

If you need A2DP then go with Weapon, it's based on 2.3.3 and everything works great.

What is A2DP?

a2dp is the ability to stream bluetooth in stero without it music over bluetooth is a no go but you can still use BT for phone calls it will only be in mono. You can still use your phone for music but you have to use this thing called a wire I dont know apparently back in the day you had to use this wire to listen to music throught headphones and speakers. Strange right? Anyway all ROMS that are not 2.3.3 based or 2.2.2 based Like CM7 or eaglesblood that are 2.3.5 do not have A2DP it has something to do with Nivida not releasing the drivers or something like that. It is ashames because Eaglesblood 1.08 is the best ROM ever but it will never be finished same as cm7 till Nivdia starts cooperating. It really was hard going back to wired headphones but eaglesblood is definitly worth it. Hope this helps

what i mean is like a software update or something?
It all depends on "what" you want to do with it. There's kernels and roms for your flashing pleasure. I suggest you first download Odin and the stock image from gtg's ultimate unbrick thread.

im a complete noob sorry.
I came from messin with iPhones to adroids
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
If you "brick" your phone it means it won't work, you can't do anything with it. Sometimes it happens when you mess up your phone by flashing a ROM or kernal wrong.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997R using XDA App
Flashing is the process of changing out your stock ROM to an aftermarket ROM created by one of the developers here on xda.
Depending on how bad you "brick" your phone, you can usually undo it.
In most cases, you can get it back to working...just like you took it out of the box by using a developers method. You can read about it in the dev thread. Gtg's ultimate unbrick will work, that's what I use when I screw up.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997R using XDA App
I recommend starting with a froyo ROM. There are 3 to choose from for our phone. You can read about them on the dev thread. The developers here have got it down and they are very stable.
After you flash your first ROM, (and mess it up a few times) you can use Gtg's Ultimate Unbrick to fix it.
Then you can start on kernels when your ready.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997R using XDA App
The only way to hardbrick a device is to flash a bad bootloader, and this is next to impossible to do on our phones. Only one person has ever hardbricked, and they were volunteering for a dangerous experiment. Our phones have a lot in place to try and prevent hardbricking.
thanks a lot guys.

You shouldn't HAVE to unbrick, but sometimes things get hosed up. Honestly the "unbrick" solutions here are closer to a "complete reformat and reinstall".
ROM vs. kernel - hard to describe. The ROM is the complete user-facing software stack - libraries, apps, etc. Changing ROMs from one to another usually requires wiping your user data and restoring from backup. (Updating a ROM from one minor revision to another usually doesn't, although sometimes a ROM dev will force a wipe, such as with Infused v2.0.3 and 2.0.4)
The kernel is the absolute base operating system that handles hardware interfaces. Kernels tend to enable features related to hardware such as an improved sound driver (Voodoo Sound), tweaked battery charging algorithms, improved I/O management (really low level stuff that just improves how "responsive" the device feels), and overclocking/undervolting. (OC is self-explanatory - makes your device faster at the potential expense of stability. UV can save battery, again at the potential risk of making your device crash occasionally.)
Some rarer software features require kernel support - for example many VPN software packages require a feature called tunneling in the kernel. Stock Froyo kernels were missing this, stock Gingerbread kernels for our device seem to all have it so far. Almost all "custom" kernels have it. Same for CIFS (Windows LAN file sharing) support - needs a custom kernel with the drivers added.
Yes, you should install a ROM first.
Remember, its called "bricking" your phone when you mess up or if something goes wrong. It's a slang word, as in your phone is as worthless as a brick. If everything goes right when you install your ROM then there is no "unbricking".
The aftermarket ROM is a customized interface with your phone. Again, there are 3 Froyo ROMs (currently) to choose from for our phone. All ROMs come with a kernel. Kernels are like the brain of your phone. We also have some great kernel developers here for our phone so, you can change out the kernel or the ROM...or both.
Read the instructions on that particular ROM or kernel thread very carefully and you won't have any problems. You got through rooting easy enough so you will do just fine.

@Entropy512 wow this is so hard lol. but thanks anyways! i kinda get it now. i just see how i can do apple so easily even put ndroid on a 3g but i cant do this stuff lol..
@ReconRob ok. and which one do yall suggest the best?
There isn't one ROM that's really any better than the other. All of our Infuse Devs collaborate, so the different ROMs are flavors. It's a personal choice.
Good luck and have fun!

[Q] Please help im new and stuck! evo shift 4 g

Hi Everyone. I am trying to larn all this rooting and flashing thing! I have a rooted HTC Evo 4G. The Rom I am using is MIUI android 2.3.5 the kernel is 2.6.35.13-cyanogenmod. First off I need to know if this is the right rom to be using, I have a couple issues. One is that i dont have 4g anymore. Two is that my phone no longer works with my bluetooth in my car. Before it was rooted my phone hooked up to the car with no issues.
Most important like i said im tryng to learn, I had my phone rooted by someone else and have no idea how to flash a new rom or what I need to do so. So if someone could help me answer these questions and maybe direct me to where ever I need to go to learn, like flashing new rom for dummies! Thanks!!!
The reason your 4G isn't working is because it's not supported on MIUI. The ROM may be causing your bluetooth issue as well.
I can't really say if it's the right or wrong ROM, it's all about personal preference. You should probably look through the development section and see what ROM would best fit you. Also, there's several other threads on this section with people giving reviews/opinions of different ROMs..

idk too much about miui because I dont use it.
MIUI does not support 4G as of yet (and may not ever) thats just something you lose.
As for the other issues I really don't know and can't help you with
To flash a new ROM you have to do these steps.
Download the ROM of choice
Put it on your SD Card (anywhere)
On your phone turn it completley off and hold down the "Volume Down & Power" at the same time
*From this point you use the volume keys to scroll up and down and power to select options*
Go to recovery and select it
once in recovery (you will be able to tell) go down to factory/data reset and click ok
Once that is finished go to wipe cache and select it
Once that is finished go to -advanced- then wipe dalvik cache and select it
once that is done go to "install zip from sd card"
then go to "choose zip from sd card"
find the ROM you downloaded and select it and flash.
Depending on the ROM it will take from 1-5 minutes to complete flashing. Once done just go to reboot at the top
It is also recommended to do the "wiping" steps 2-3 times (steps 7-9)

MikShifted G v1.6 is fully functioning. Everything works, 4G, Bluetooth, WiFi, WiFi Tethering, USB Tethering, everything works. Plus it has a lot of extras. One thing I will say it cannot at the present time be OC'd. No you do not need to flash a different kernel with it. Believe me when I tell you it does not need it.

Oc'd is just short for overclocked. Basically, until htc releases the source you can't use any overclocked kernels so you'll have to run at 800mhz, but MikG is surprisingly quick for running stock

another issue for the newbie!
I recently flashed the mik rom v1.6 and loved it everything went smoothly until i realized I am not getting any text messages. and before i go back to the miui rom I was using i figured I would ask if anyone else had this issue?
Thanks
I did switch the rom and still have the same issue any suggestions?
My personal preference for ROM is CyanogenMod (CM). It has everything a person can need and more, but its not noob friendly by any means (I learned that the hard way! Muchos thanks to Root Master Crump for taking me off the straight and narrow!). I've tried a few other ROMs and its really all about personal preference, as others have said. I like being able to customize out the wazzoo, but if you're looking for speed/performance and ease of use, Mik is very solid.

You could try updating your prl and see if that helps.I think it's probably an issue with Sprint and not the ROM though. Maybe post something in the MikG thread and see if others are having issues.
I have talked to sprint and its not on their end. I have doing alot of reading and not on answer on how to get my texting back. I tried going back to mIui and still not texts coming in. Im lost any ideas out there?
You need to update your PRL and Profile. Then reboot the phone, but you have to be on Sense to do that. Also, as soon as you finish the flashing process. Send yourself an SMS/MMS. Before you start loading things onto the phone. That way it will help you narrow down the issue. So your sure it's not something your loading on the phone causing the issue.

Best ROM for Nexus S? And how to flash it?

Hi guys!
I'm using standard Gingerbread Android ROM and I'm getting a little tired of it so wanted to ask if someone could suggest some ROMs to try. Also, I'm not sure how to flash them on Nexus S. I heard that there are many Androids that can be rooted by clicking one button in an app, but for Nexus I found a long tutorial here on XDA and I'm a little hesitant to try it.
Any tips will be appreciated!
Thanks much

I have tried out just about all of the roms out there now for the nexus s and now I have reverted back to stock. I have found something wrong with every rom I have tried. Custom roms are just too buggy for me even ones marked as "stable". If you're willing to deal with bugs things not working phone reboots and dropped calls by all means try some custom roms. Now I'm just waiting for Ice Cream Sandwich to come out.
oxygen rom is one of the better ones out there.
oh and btw nexus s is one of the easiest phones to root follow the guides carefully and you'll be done in minutes.
This has been discussed couple of times here, do a search.
For example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239365
If you don't really feel comfortable flashing a ROM, hang around in dev section where most ROM & guidelines are available and read the feedback from users on each ROM and see which one fits your needs.
And there are NO best ROM only most suitable to your needs, what is best for others doesn't necessarily fit your needs.
I'm with blowtorch, you have to try it to find out yourself...I myself did and at the end of the day I'm perfectly comfortable with stock rooted.
The longer and harder thing to root a Nexus is to installer drivers on computer. After it's fast and easy.
Oxygen is great after 2 or 3 days. I use adw launcher ex, or stock launcher.
Sms, mms, video gtalk, video skype and so on.
Everything is juste ok.
2 days of battery life with heavy use.
I try ns collab, superosr, it's great too. More cyanogen like.
I never use miui more than 5 minutes...but i read and heard that it's a good rom too.
I love Ice and Fire. Has an Ice Cream Sandwich style launcher. Lots of extras.

This x100.
Stock Rom may not be flashy but its rock solid and fully functional.
I once searched for something like this and found that there's no clear cut answer for "best" ROM. Like others said try them all (one you figure out how to flash) or do watch videos showing off each rom to get a sense of what it's like. I don't have my NS yet but I'll be trying NSCollab and SuperOSR when I get it. Odd considering I'm not a CM7 fan...
Depends on the features you are looking for. For me at least, I got the Nexus S so I could have stock AOSP. I've been sticking with Oxygen for a while now as its close to stock with some useful added features. CM wasn't for me though I may give it another shot soon.
There's a lot of tutorials on youtube that show you how to flash a ROM. I suggest you watch a few of 'em to get an idea how to do it properly.
As for the best ROM, like others have said, it all depends on your needs. I use Oxygen because it's very stable and has extra features that I find pretty useful.
I also like minimal bloatware so I downloaded ES File Explorer and removed most Google apps since I never use 'em!

You are asking for best ROM, how to flash it, finding simpler way to root it without installing SDK, etc. on computer....and that's the only way I can think of.

First root your phone
install custom recovery like ClockworkMod recovery. You can even download this from the market

boot into recovery (hold down power down and power until the blue screen comes up)
install zip from sdcard
choose rom zip

Yes CM7 is very nice, but you will need to spend some time reading the dev forum and the stickies. All the info is there. Are you an experienced android rom user? Tried different roms etc. in the past? Is so this will be simple for you.
I run the Weapon rom, a better stock alternative. It just works, which important on a phone you use for business.
Not perfect, but gives a good visual ref as to the process. Still read up first.
cm7 is awesome
CM7 made my G2x almost perfect. It is awesome. Unfortunately for me I could never get my GPS to truly work. But CM7 FIXED 99% of my issues: crashes, reboots, bluetooth problems, etc. Do it! It's well worth it. Not to mention the custom lockscreen and notification menu are sweet!

I can't get Eagles Blood AOSP build 1 to work on G2X

I've tried a lot of ways the only from I got to work on my G2X is Genesis from Mr.Apocalypse and Hellfire before 1.6 and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I do the regular wipe data/cache/Davilk and its a no go. I even used some new Nuliffier <-- lol I know that's not spelled right but I got that the single wipe and then tried to flash it and its a no go sooo can someone help me out and tell me if I'm missing something ??????

Check rom integrity using md5? Might be bad download.

There's been a bug with 4.0.4 roms that requires you to flash it twice, one after another, nothing in between. Next time you try a rom like that, take note of how long it takes to install. If it only took a few seconds, it wasn't properly flashed. Flash again right away and you should notice it taking longer to install. Then flash your gapps and/or kernel if ya need it and reboot. Should be good.

It doesn't effect the EB AOSP ROM. It's 4.0.3.
@Caliyork yeah your right I really ain't notice that but I'll be looking at that, have you been successful putting kernels on because I have the same problem with that ?? I mean I got one to go thru but when it fully booted up the touch didn't work and I couldn't unlock it so it wasn't functional. I had to restore and run a rom without a kernel.

are you flashing the proper kernel, sounds like you grabbed a kernel for a different phone, I'm guessing something from the Morfic collection?
Hmm could be, but I was in the g2x forum and I browsed for kernels and I got fauxs 123 kernel, Trinity, and Harshs and none of them seemed to have worked, I used Mr.Apocalypse and none of them went thru. Cud u give me links to see if any were the right ones ? Do you use OC/UV ?

All those that are directly in the forum are correct except maybe harsh his might've been a p990 kernel. Some phones don't play well with some kernels.

Unfortunately, that bit is especially true for this phone. Bad quality control.

Yeah I guess mines is too I think :/ do you know if it possible to fix that problem ???

I'm not sure referring to quality control is accurate, but phones do have bad batches or manufacturing tolerances and what not. Can't always get the cream of the crop.
That's practically the one reason why I chose the G2x instead of the HTC MyTouch 4G lol. Bad EMMC happens to die on you and you've got yourself an expensive brick.
Have you tried any other ROM other than ICS roms? Trying to figure out if the problem is restricted to those only. Might help.

Haha yeah I've heard that before but I'm not sure if I have a bad batch because I got Genesis, AOKP, and Hellfire (ICS roms) to work fine but could not get any custom kernels that supported OC/UV to work on them. Uhh I actually been using nothing but ICS roms I never tried and other roms that supported GB just cuz I wanted to be updated. Are you on any other Roms or you using a ICS rom ?

I've used a lot of different ROMs, and they all work fine. But I'm on the stock LG 2.3.4 that was released lately, and that's been running really super.
Flashing ICS doesn't necessarily mean that you're up to date when a lot of things don't work. I've used AOKP, EB's AOSP, HFS and Owain's. I have multiple problems with data dropping, APN's disappearing when entering Airplane mode or mass storage just completely does not work. Not to mention, NO NETFLIX!
As far as kernel issues, make sure you're installing the appropriate ones for the P999 and make sure they're ICS specific and not for the GB kernels.
Edit: If I remember, EB's AOSP uses a modified Faux Kernel that supports OC right off the bat, so there's no need to flash a different kernel.
That's true never thought of it like that where can I get the rom you are using ???? And yeah I tried to get EB AOSP to work but it wont for me -_____- lol

I'm using a stock rom. If you feel adventurous then flash the new V21y baseband (50% likely to brick your phone hard). If not, I would just stick with GB. My all time favorite is WeaponG2x.
