Hi guys!
I'm using standard Gingerbread Android ROM and I'm getting a little tired of it so wanted to ask if someone could suggest some ROMs to try. Also, I'm not sure how to flash them on Nexus S. I heard that there are many Androids that can be rooted by clicking one button in an app, but for Nexus I found a long tutorial here on XDA and I'm a little hesitant to try it.
Any tips will be appreciated!

I have tried out just about all of the roms out there now for the nexus s and now I have reverted back to stock. I have found something wrong with every rom I have tried. Custom roms are just too buggy for me even ones marked as "stable". If you're willing to deal with bugs things not working phone reboots and dropped calls by all means try some custom roms. Now I'm just waiting for Ice Cream Sandwich to come out.
oxygen rom is one of the better ones out there.
oh and btw nexus s is one of the easiest phones to root follow the guides carefully and you'll be done in minutes.

If you don't really feel comfortable flashing a ROM, hang around in dev section where most ROM & guidelines are available and read the feedback from users on each ROM and see which one fits your needs.
And there are NO best ROM only most suitable to your needs, what is best for others doesn't necessarily fit your needs.
I'm with blowtorch, you have to try it to find out yourself...I myself did and at the end of the day I'm perfectly comfortable with stock rooted.
The longer and harder thing to root a Nexus is to installer drivers on computer. After it's fast and easy.
Oxygen is great after 2 or 3 days. I use adw launcher ex, or stock launcher.
Sms, mms, video gtalk, video skype and so on.
Everything is juste ok.
2 days of battery life with heavy use.
I try ns collab, superosr, it's great too. More cyanogen like.
I never use miui more than 5 minutes...but i read and heard that it's a good rom too.
I love Ice and Fire. Has an Ice Cream Sandwich style launcher. Lots of extras.

Please do us and yourself a favor and learn everything you need to know for rooting, recovery, roms, and kernels before attempting anything. You will save yourself a headache and the possibility of ****ting your pants. Thanks.

Stock Rom may not be flashy but its rock solid and fully functional.
I once searched for something like this and found that there's no clear cut answer for "best" ROM. Like others said try them all (one you figure out how to flash) or do watch videos showing off each rom to get a sense of what it's like. I don't have my NS yet but I'll be trying NSCollab and SuperOSR when I get it. Odd considering I'm not a CM7 fan...
Depends on the features you are looking for. For me at least, I got the Nexus S so I could have stock AOSP. I've been sticking with Oxygen for a while now as its close to stock with some useful added features. CM wasn't for me though I may give it another shot soon.
There's a lot of tutorials on youtube that show you how to flash a ROM. I suggest you watch a few of 'em to get an idea how to do it properly.
As for the best ROM, like others have said, it all depends on your needs. I use Oxygen because it's very stable and has extra features that I find pretty useful.
I also like minimal bloatware so I downloaded ES File Explorer and removed most Google apps since I never use 'em!

I read about it already, and the question is - is there a simpler way to root Nexus S than installing all of these SDKs etc on the computer? I guess, not from what I see here.

cm7.1.0 RC ns-kang. its in rom manager. there is a 7.1.0 stable release but causes random reboots.

Hello All,
I am a total newbie to all of this, I just bought a Galaxy s2 Skyrocket. I managed to find good info on how to root it and did that with something called superoneclick. So it is showing rooted with out the yellow triangle. Now for my question.
There are so many custom roms out there i have no clue what to do. All i am really looking for is a custom rom that will let me do the following if it is possible, wifi tethering, custom bootanimation and if it will let me overclock. And I guess something that is stable as i see mentioned on here a lot.
Anyway anyone that has time to help a newbie I would really appreciate it. There is a lot of great info on here but most of it is written for people that at least have a clue about this stuff.
Most of all i want to say thank you to anyone who is willing to help me in advance. And if you don't feel like helping a newbie I do understand that also.

First of all thank you for your reply. Am I reading this correct that I install version 2.0 and then install the addons and fixes? Or will everything be fine with the 2.0 and the fixes are already in there. Sorry to be so much trouble some of it is just confusing to me and I dont want to brick "i believe that is the correct term" my phone.

SkyRocketeer and Sky Ice Cream Sandwich are pretty good. Next one I will be testing out will be the Red Sonja!
Red sonja is the best. Completly stable and fast. Vibrate does not work. But other then that its its perfect.
I'm using Super Stock 2.3.6. It's a rather bare bones ROM that is close to stock but with a few tweaks and removals of stuff like bloatware and other things. Overall I'm satisfied. I'm using this until the AOSP is released and some of the other ROMs become a bit more stable.
I'm using Sky Ice Cream Sandwich, it's my daily driver. Whichever rom you install, make sure you follow the dev's instructions. Only install roms for skyrocket, very important.
Most Roms in the Dev section are Stable-ish.
Red Sonja is probably the MOST stable in my OP.....less vibration, you dont have to do any work arounds, no extra flashing less the 4 intitial flashes( really 2 flashes if you dont want the comic pages)
but after that, everything is working as it would be on stock.

First of all again thanks to everyone that gave me advise. I know have my first custom rom on my phone with the addons that looked interesting. Also a custom kernel.
I only have one question if i decide to try another rom, is there a way to go back to the way i have my phone now with out doing each step again. Like if i use the backup feature in CWM, If i do a restore will that put it back the way it is now.

That's the point of doing the Nandroid backup. It'll restore your phone to how it was. At least that's what it's supposed to do. I honestly can't attest to it because I've never had to do it *knock on wood*

Yes you can but I have never tried Alien build dont know how stable is it. ICS does offer wifi tethering. I just ICS only dont know about other rom
Hi all, so im new here and to the andriod scene. I've heard some talk about the cm7 mod/rom via maximumpc magazine. Is this a viable upgrade for our phones? Is there a better mod? Would someone care to explain and possibly walk me through an installation.. Thanks!

I'm using phoenix blood (with Faux's kernel) and it's awesome. It's based on CM7.
First root your phone
install custom recovery like ClockworkMod recovery. You can even download this from the market
Put the ROM zip on your sdcard.
boot into recovery (hold down power down and power until the blue screen comes up)
install zip from sdcard
choose rom zip
Cm7 or cyanogenmod 7 is a rom........ to install this from u need to root ur device and install clockwork recovery mod.....all what u need is available in the android development section......If u need any more help.....there are alot of people here who can help u.....

Yes CM7 is very nice, but you will need to spend some time reading the dev forum and the stickies. All the info is there. Are you an experienced android rom user? Tried different roms etc. in the past? Is so this will be simple for you.
I run the Weapon rom, a better stock alternative. It just works, which important on a phone you use for business.
Not perfect, but gives a good visual ref as to the process. Still read up first.
cm7 is awesome
CM7 made my G2x almost perfect. It is awesome. Unfortunately for me I could never get my GPS to truly work. But CM7 FIXED 99% of my issues: crashes, reboots, bluetooth problems, etc. Do it! It's well worth it. Not to mention the custom lockscreen and notification menu are sweet!
I got this phone recently and I'm experiencing some minor bugs and was wondering if it's worth it loading a custom mod to it.
It's currently running GB 2.3.3 stock
I have no experience at all doing anything regarding custom roms or kernels or whatever. Before I do anything with my phone I want to know the ups and downs to it and if it's worth it
The bugs I currently have are random reboots but this has only happened twice in about 5 days of use wifi calling sometimes gets a little *****y but it works (for this I had to get a older sim card TM 9073)
Is there a stable rom around that most g2x users are using ?

I don't mind Gb or ICS though I believe Gb would be the most stable
I only want my phone to be the most stable as possible with all it's features staying with 2.3.3+ I do a lot of gaming and run game emulators on it

Well if there was someone experienced kind enough to help me out through this process I would appreciate it a lot since I have no experience at all regarding this.
I do wish to know if there is a way to revert my G2X to its factory settings on the 2.3.3 in case I mess up etc
so.. everywhere I read says do this do that flash this and that... I can;t find anything detailed enough for someone who doesn't know what nvflash is or what it does or how to use rom manager etc

This phone is probaly one of the easiest phones to root and install cwm on, its 99.9% unbrickable and has tons of information in dev thread. Just take the time to read b4 you do anything, simple as that.

thanks to all , the links where helpful I got the cyanogen RC 7.2 working good so far only 1 issue when I want to install the telenav gps says its not available in my country I really need this thing working . Apart from that It's a lot easier than I thought now just need to figure the gps thing out.
What country are you trying TeleNav in? And does google maps not work for you?
I agree. I'd usually use Google Maps Navigation. Has helped me quite nicely.

I'm, obviously, an owner of an HTC Desire S running stock software (Android 2.3.5, HTC Sense 3.0) and waiting for an upgrade :/
I'd really like to try a custom ROM but loosing stability or functionality would most likely cause me a lot of daily problems.
Is there a custom ROM out there that has no troubles with everything working on a stable basis? Or should I just wait, wait, and wait for that update?
if your not sure you want to root, simple answer is don't.
stability is a relative term. if we have 1000 people, we also got 1000 different opinions what "stable" is. so i'm affraid you'll have to decide for yourself.
You can try Fallout, with sense 4.0, but then you loose the 3d-flip-clock and other nice graphics, that still are within sense 3.6.
But 3.6 is very cpu-intensive, so you miss some snappyness and battery time.
So the choice will be snappy and more power with fallout or virtous, or nice with ice-ds or icsaga.

I suggest trying Fallout (Sense 4A, just wifi tethering not working) or Endymion (Sense 3.5, rock solid, in my opinion more stable than stock). But before, plz read the threads about rooting flashing etc to avoid bad surprises.

i know the feeling but my advice is if your not familiar with rooting, unrooting and odin i would just wait cause it would suck if you brick your device. Also if it you can find a used version of your phone for cheap with a clean esn then you could test or even mess around with thing until you become familiar and test any rom you wish before flashing it on your original device that you use on a daily basis...hope this helps

Try Ice Cold Sandwich. Pretty stable, only bug is the wrong inversion of the front cam. Also, a clean vanilla android is more attractive than sense

if you want something stable, go for the GB Roms, nothing with ics is truly stable until we get the kernel, the best GB Rom I've used is reaper, if you really want too to do it then that's probably your best starter Rom. Not a sense based one though. If you want sense have a read of the Rom threads. I got rid of sense and havnt looked back.
i'm going through the exact same thing. I'm totally impressed with all the rooting, modding and custom rom stuff but something makes me uncomfortable trying it. I will see how the thread is developing

Just start little a used phone that works or even a galaxy mp3 player. I started with the vzw tablet and bought a used phone from swappa. Its fun to flash and test someones hard work i owe alot to this community cause i sure learned alot...

when you succsesfully root your phone and want to try different roms it's crucial that you become familliar with nandroid backup. you do nandroid backup in your recovery just before you flash the new rom. it saves the current (fully configured) system to your sdcard and you can always come back if you do not want to use the newly flashed rom anymore. you do nandroid backup of all tested roms that you liked and save yourself time and pain of flashing and configuring them again and again every time.

+1 for backup. Titanium backup is also a must for me, the free one is good but it's well worth paying for the full app.
I like to play with alternative roms, so i have taken the step to root. But to be true. The only real improvement for me is to get rid of adds and to get rid off sense. The stock rom was good enough though.

Now, I'm sure that I want to use a custom ROM, not sure witch one yet, but my choice will be either Fallout or ICE with no Sense.

Howdy all - I've just gotten a Nexus S to replace my old Xperia Play that was having many issues. I'm still a bit of a noob to the whole rooting/rom scene, and a lot of it is a bit over my head (which is frustrating for me as I'm good with technology in general).
Currently, I'm running Android 2.3.4, my build number is GTJ61, baseband version I9020AUCKE1 (don't know what all of that is important to know, but there it is).
I've tried most of the "simple" things I've found to try to force the phone to update, including the whole killing the google service, clearing the cache, etc, and the Sim Card removal trick. No dice, which is frustrating to me as I hear that the 4.1.1 update is very nice.
I'm in the middle of searching through the forums to see what I can find on this issue, but Comcast is being utterly craptastic right now and my web is simply crawling along. If anyone could give me a push in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it - I just want a nice, clean interface with good battery life and as little slowdown as possible. I know very little about flashing new roms and such but it seems like that might be my only option at this point.
I do play a few basic games (Robo Defense, Star Trader) and I use my phone heavily for texting and nutritional information (My Fitness Pal and a few other apps). Nothing too heavy, but again, i dont' know what all information is important for this
I appreciate any and all help or advice provided!

EDIT - one thing thats had me a bit confused is the i9020a thing - does the UCKE1 at the end of mine mean I have a different version, or is all i9020a the same?

You should go in about phone settings and check for updates. On Wi-Fi. And it should ask you to updgrade. Strange thing that it didnt. There are few tutorials in general section, also in q&a you can find something usefull.
I would recommend flashing custom recovery with fastboot, than flash new bootloader in recovery and than you can put any 4.1.2 rom with no problems. also you could flash new radio if you want.

I second this, sadly google does not have an update program you can install on your computer like samsung or sony have, so you can't really just plug in and update, What you can do is flash a stock 4.1.1 update to it, using the os images they release, please consult the forum guides on how to do this.
Also, I don't think your carrier will update the phone simply because they suck at these things and most likely an OTA to jb was never released.
Alternatively, just flash a custom ROM after you root, but for first timers I'd say just root and then flash a stock image.
Hope this helps.
I would also suggest flashing a custom ROM. It can be a little daunting the first time, but there are many step by step guides in here to help you along the way. Choose one of the more stable ROMs as they will have have most of the bugs all ironed out. Once you go the custom rom path, you will love it.

I found myself in the exact same situation a year or so ago when i got my nexus s. My best advice to you would be to follow the guides on the sticky threads and go with the incremental updates, just so you get the hang of all the rooting and flashing first.
2.3.4 > 2.3.6 > 4.0.4 > 4.1.1 > 4.1.2
Since you say you generally don't have issues with technology, just read 2-3 general rooting/flashing threads first and then do everything by hand. It helps.

The only thing i didn't like about flashing a custom recovery is you'd be tempted to flash ROMs and/or kernels from time to time.
We got great developers here so you cannot be satisfied with what you currently have

Well, one of the most popular is cyanogenmod. Which version 10 is built on 4.1.2. It's, for me, disgustingly fast, stable, lock up free and has great additions to the codebase. In fact, it's looking like I'll keep this rom for the longest I have ever done. You can also use slimbean, which I used for a time and really liked.

I would also recommend CM 10.0 (stable) is good rom to start. It is stable, fast and pretty decent battery life. I have been using it for weeks without any issues.

Mate check out Slim ROM website - this link leads directly to the Slim Android 4.1.2 for our phone (called Crespo). In addition to this file you'll need to poke around the Slim site to also download GAPPS and the AIO (all in one) file. This ROM is fast, feature packed and absolutely bug-free. Your battery will thank you
