Solved in post #2 & 3.
My wife has a Charge and I am trying to root it for her just so she can tether her laptop from her phone instead of my ThunderBolt all the time.
I used Odin v1.82 to flash the latest recovery file (0817_charge_recovery.tar).
I flashed PB&JTime Kernel from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126136&highlight=latest+kernel.
I rebooted phone to find I had no root using Root Checker from Market.
I manually downloaded SuperUser from Market. Rechecked and had root access, according to Root Checker.
I'm running GummyCube2.0, successfully now.
I downloaded both OpenGarden and Barnacle. Neither tethering app will work. Everytime she tried to connect to my phone, it shows up as a wifi network, but her phone shows up as an Adhoc network, which will not even connect.
Any idea what's going on here? Any more information I can provide to assist in finding a solution? Any help is appreciated... I want MY phone back, damnit!

Hi,
I just installed the new Gingerbread for my D2G
but couldn't get it rooted via z4root
so I tried PetesMotorolaRootTool and it didn't work either.
I finally managed to root my device with Pete's DROID 3 easy root script v7
so I thought I had it all straightened out.
Although Root Explorer seems to work just fine (renaming and all..)
but other apps such as market enabler or the Wireless Tether
seem to be failing to acquire root permission.
It just keep asking me if I have my device rooted (well...yeah..duh...)
What seems to be the problem?
Plz..help...
Thx a million in advance....I'm very desperate...
I seem to be having an issue rooting mine as well. Using super one click root.
u should use d3 one click root
damn, im having the same issue. i use barnacle wifi tether and it gets denied su access. my su binary is up to date but i cant seem to use z4 for temp or permanent root. even thou my phone was rooted when i did the ota update and had no issues.
ok so i just did pete's root tool and it worked but now i cant get barnacle to work. it starts like normal but then spits out some mumbo jumbo about the dhcp port already in use... idk lol

keep tryin
i failed on d 1st attempt but succeed after dat
i use pete's motorola root tool
i was having the same issue, it wouldnt root, but i finally got it with pete's motorola root, but now whenever i try to tether, it gains root access but a white icon pops up in my notification bar stating that basically tether was turned on, but its verizons. so then when i try to log onto the internet on my computer, it comes up to the verizon BBAC page trying to make my buy their tethering. if i can get some help please. ive tried wifi tether, wireless tether, open garden, and barnacle and it all does the same thing. thank yo in advance.
Yea I'm having the same tether issue. Does anyone know of a way to quarantine or freeze the stupid gb/verizon tether app? My quarantine thing can't find it since its more of a setting than an app and idk enough about how to tweak the system settings or registry stuff. Can anyone find a way to disable this?

I am not sure what caused this. Yesterday during the day, i was using my wireless tether app just fine. Then lastnight I tried to connect to my computer, and my Android wifi network is not listed on my computer as an available network to connect to. I have rebooted the phone and computer about 5 times. I have tried a different computer, and an ipod, nothing is seeing my wireless tether network.
I also tried using the stock wifi hotspot app that came with the phone, and it will not start up or broadcast a signal.
So for whatever reason, my phone stopped broadcasting out a wifi signal. I can still connect to wifi from my phone to another router, I am just not able to use my phone as a hotspot anymore.
Has anyone else had this problem or seen a discussion on this issue anywhere? I have the stock ROM, but I am rooted. I did not change anything from the time that it was working, to the time when it stopped. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but I know thats not the problem anyhow.
Same thing.
The same thing happened to me, the only way I could fix it was to restore a nandroid from when it worked and update my apps from titanium backups. Still don't know what happened or why.
Ok, yeah I am kind of assuming I am going to have to do a reset or load a custom ROM or something. Thanks for the info.
If anyone else has any suggestions, let me know please.

Can't root (SU) or use FoxFi after Sprint ASA-14 update
So I never rooted my phone and made the mistake of allowing Spring to do an OTA update to ASA-14. Now all the root exploits don't work and FoxFI doesn't work. Since I can't root I can't use Wifi Tether either.
I desperately need someway to let my phone do a WIFI Hotspot with sprint ASA-14 update on my phone! HELP!
Why can't you just unlock the bootloader and root?

I have unlocked the bootloader, but with the ASA 14 update I am unable to root via the moto2fail method. I was able to root with ASA 10 using the same method but when I try to downgrade I get a security error on the stock bootloader.

Motofail2go is broke with the ASA14 firmware. If you are unlocked, flash the TWRP recovery available in this sub-forum and it will root your phone for you..
Get your TWRP image here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1887070
I use method from HERE. It's easier to gain root.

The new TWRP automatically roots the device... flash TWRP and when you reboot TWRP it will detect you are not rooted and root the device for you.... so I'm not sure how that thread is easier lol.
Either way, you will get root and custom recovery. So either method is fine.

Yeah..actually I rooted by flashing cwm and then the superSU.zip. After that,I flashed TWRP. I'm getting used to TWRP since using SS3 on my D4.

Success!
Thanks for your help! I got TWRP installed and then installed the SU.zip and now I have root with ASA 14.
FoxFI still doesn't work but I was able to get "WiFi Tether" to work since I am now rooted.
I rooted and now the WIFI tether app will not work/.. ANY IDEAS
just FTR, my photon q with some version of CWM and supersu as the root program was able to use "wifi tether" (no longer available on the market!?). this was just last night.
the only problem is that it can only broadcast an ad-hoc network. this isn't picked up by a lot of devices, namely tablets. my win7 laptop can see it and connect just fine, however.
i tried changing the "setup method" to the only other of the two available (some ad-hoc method and "native framework tether") and the device crashed. when it rebooted, it was selected, but it didn't work.
food for thought.

Not to hijack but can anyone recommend an app to hide the tethering usage from the carrier? Like a proxy app? Thanks in advance.
ROOT FOR GALAXY TAB 4 7" T230
THIS IS FOR THE T230/T230NU NOT ANY OTHER T23X MODELS. OTHER 23X USERS USE AT YOUR OWN RISK
VROOT IS DEPERCIATED AND NO LONGER WORKS BUT WHO CARES SUCKED ANYWAYS.

i just flashed TWRP recovery thru Odin 3.09 then it detects that im not rooted and it rooted it few clicks
1.) download Odin 3.09 and TWRP(recovery.tar) - all attached
2.) put tablet on Download Mode (Power Button+Volume Down+Home Button)
3.) flash the recovery.tar thru Odin 3.09 use PDA/AP button on Odin
4a.) put tablet on Recovery Mode, this time it would be modified recovery TWRP (Power Button+Volume Up+Home Button)
4b.) Do NOT boot to android
5.) reboot device to TWRP directly from download mode. TWRP will detect that tablet is not rooted and ask if you want to intalls root. Slide to Install
6.) find SuperSU installer, follow instruction to install.
7.) download RootChecker to verify root

the modem. Huge thanks for this guide shinyside.

Despite kind of clumsily clicking through, I managed to get her rooted/Verified with root checker from the Play store/Installed Titanuim Backup pro and froze a ton of useless apps - Runs fine and kind of nice to be able to freeze things. I did disconnect the wifi connection from my pc before I did the install of VRoot and I never had an issue FYI.
it failed. I tried several times. Can you guys help?
when connecting the tab it takes 10 minutes to establish the usb connection. after clicking the root button it takes another 10 minutes. meanwhile the chinese app shows a green field the a blue field and so on.
can you guys confirm that behaviour? thanks.

You need to be a little more specific and what step you're on.

root issue
So I accidently updated and ran 1.78 file as opposed disconnecting my Internet and run 1.7.7. It was successful but i am getting su not found when running from android emulator terminal. Am I screwed to fix this? I did factory default tablet not it doesn't update 1.7.7 anymore..I could not understand the Chinese wording but clicking on green button it doesn't update like I saw finished when I did it on 1.7.8 version. When I rebooted, i checked root checker of course it's not rooted. Can anybody assist me?
I ran this root, which went well...random question, will the root hold if I do the system updates? I know some do, some don't. Figured I should ask before updating at all. If it won't hold, do we have a source for the updates?
so i have vroot 1.7.7 but still get the bluescreeen with a x meaning its not successful what am i doing wrong?

I kept, having the same problem, it's because of the August update.
You need to revert to the previous update. You can go to sammobile dot com and get the previous firmware for your tablet. Get the latest firmware that does not have Kies. Instructions for how to install it onto your tablet are on sammobile. You'll use Odin 3.09, and once you've flashed the previous frimware, turn off any wifi connection on your tablet so that it doesn't re-update. Then root using the method in this forum and you should be good.
I offered to do this for a friend tonight and thought I would place this here for anyone that is searching for the information.
1. Root using Towelroot. LINK or LINK
2. Install SuperSu from Play Store. LINK
3. Install Wifi Tether TrevE Mod. LINK Or standard Android WiFi Tether may work as well. LINK
4. Here is the important part- Open the WiFi Tether app, go to Settings/Change Device-Profile/ZTE Blade. I was able to leave all other settings alone.
5. Enjoy

Stuck With No WiFi
Worked like a charm. Only one exception. I can't get my WiFi to work. It worked fine for a while and then just went out. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. LG Realm LS620. Please help.
Backup Restore
I backed up my phone before attempting any modifications. I have ran the restore and received the message Wi-Fi not found. Anyone with information about how to find or restore the Wi-Fi would be greatly appreciated. I have googled this but all I get is basically do a hard boot. Which I have already done. I believe after the hard boot my phone is no longer modified. Again any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
Return To Mfg
I could not get the WI-Fi to work again. I still had warranty on the phone so I have sent it back to be fixed or replaced. I wiped everything twice so I hope there will be no traces of any non warranty information left on the phone. Thanks

I chose the ZTE Blade mode like suggested. I have used wifi tether alot and have another version but cannot get it working either. Is this not compatible with lollipop? I'm rooted with Xposed, so if any suggestions, would be nice.
