An Open Message to SAMSUNG (Regarding the Galaxy Note & Sprint Epic 4g Touch)... - General Topics

Sammy,
I have to say that I'm thoroughly, thoroughly disappointed in your decision not to give the Galaxy Note a Super AMOLED Plus display. At this point, I feel like I'm settling with the Galaxy S II. It seems as though you device manufacturers consistently release something new and spectacular, but ::whoops:: wait... decide, "Let's not make it too good. Who'll want to upgrade when we add that one little thing we've excluded?" I find it disgusting, personally. [Update] Also, although this may be an issue of personal preference, I feel as though you should've continued to use the standard Android 4-button layout (with dedicated camera button), a las the US Galaxy S II variants... That is all.

[Update] I would also like to voice my discontent regarding the Sprint version of the Galaxy S II's lack of NFC. What could possibly be the reason for this absurd hardware subtraction? Inquiring minds would like to know...

Same here punch in the stomach. I always thought it did re read it and was mortified

The galaxy S 2 has a much lower pixel density than the note (as does the galaxy tab 7.7).
It's very likely they can't manufacture the plus at a 283 dpi density. It's pretty understandable...

If they physically can't manufacture it, then I can understand, but if its a choice they made to say cut costs or something, I say most people would be fine with paying the extra but for the plus.

IMO the people that really care about the Plus are tech enthusiasts, not the average consumer.

That's not to say I wouldn't love for it to be Plus though

I have to say, a lot of my friends and family, which you can definitely consider average consumers, love the screen on the infuse and they consider it the best screen on any smartphone. So I would have to say that a good number of average consumers can see the difference and like it.

Well side by side there is a difference. I'm just saying saying if I asked someone on the street what's the difference between S Amoled and S Amoled +, I'm sure a lot of people couldn't explain the difference.

Yea that is true, I guess the added "HD" to the Super AMOLED branding would take the place of the "Plus" and people wouldn't notice. But I'm gonna bet that at AT&T stores (if it comes out on AT&T) they are not gonna place the Infuse and Note side by side.

I tend to agree. It's really only the enthusiasts who care. You're average consumer will notice the side by side difference, but they wont seek out (or not seek out) a phone purely based on the resolution. They're much more likely to get a phone with a low res 7 inch screen, than a 4 inch high res screen simply because 7>4, but it's not immediately obvious that WXGA > qHD.

I have to agree. I have a Focus with the regular SAMOLED and had an Infuse. The difference is night and day. SAMOLED looks like the stitching of denim and SAMOLED+ is clean, smooth and pixel-free.

Then what is the reason they are calling it the Super AMOLED HD? And if it's only 800x500 why are they calling it 1280x800? Is there a technical loop hole they are using?
And isn't 281dpi (or something close) not possible if it was only 800x500.
Someone please explain if there is a diff between super AMOLED and super AMOLED HD.

Maybe OP could have taken sometime to search before posting this useless thread. It was already known for sometime now that HD Super AMOLED will use Pentile matrix. NO, SAMSUNG DOES NOT LIKE TO USE PENTILE, THEY JUST HAVE TO DO IT. Samsung (anyone else for that matter) does not have the technology to make such screens for mass production. And even if they do, that would be too costly.
So, we have Pentile display for now. You should have done some basic google search before posting this. Any info on AMOLED is first revealed on http://www.oled-info.com
http://www.oled-info.com/super-amoled-hd
http://www.oled-info.com/super-amoled-hd-use-pentile-technology

http://www.oled-info.com/samsung-introduce-7-super-amoled-displays-soon-will-be-super-amoled-hd
EDIT: It's a serious FUD that your PPI depends upon the sub-pixel arrangement. And for whatever it's worth, there have been reports of multiple type of Pentile arrangement. So, please don't start crying the moment anyone says Pentile.
You also have a 2560x1600 WQXGA from Samsung using Pentile arrangement. So, you saying that display is also bad just because it's Pentile?
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/13/samsung-and-lg-to-showcase-large-high-pixel-density-lcd-panels/
Just look at the Galaxy Note screen first and then make a judgement.

Alright SAMOLED uses a pentile matrix while SAMOLED plus uses a true stripe RGB display.

The Atrix also uses a pentile display and it annoys me to no end.

because pixel count doesn't depend on subpixel count

to be honest, i'm going to reserve my judgement on this until i see one in person because at this point with such a high res, i'm no entirely sure if it will be that noticeable
Going back to the whole SAMOLED vs SAMOLED+, my 4.3" SAMOLED+ display on SGSII is much much sharper than the 4" SAMOLED display on the captivate

Ok while I get that the display will be pentile, i guess I'm just not sure of the two different res ppl are claiming. So 1280x800 that samsung says is subpixel count, but actual pixels is 800x500?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium

After reading another post I realized that resolution is still pixel count along X and Y axis regardless of sub pixel arrangement. So again where does 800x500 come from?

Love the Tbolt..But..

I love the phone in everyway...but...Im disappointed with the screen. I had a Fascinate before it, and while everything about it sucked, the screen was beautiful! I guess i got spoiled with the amoled. Whats everyone elses opinion here. Im contemplating returning it, hoping the bionic has a better screen.
yeah, the Thunderbolt's screen doesn't even come close to the Fascinate. I had the two side-by-side last night and the difference especially at max brightness was quite noticeable. I also noticed that angry birds isn't as smooth and fluid on the Bolt as the Fascinate but other than that, the Thunderbolt easily outdoes the Fascinate.
I guess the amoled screens are too expensive to manufacture. I will not even consider the stealth from sammy. I have given up with them as a cellphone manufacturer...the fasc is STILL running eclair...A big FAIL on sammies end.
At least we wont get screen burn in's like amoled gets.
i went from an iPhone 4 to an evo, so dropped resoultion going to a bigger screen, and actually thought it looked great, to then this phone, and I have to say, the screen on this phone for me is fantastic. I think it is maybe a little to warm sometimes, as when showing flesh tones, but I would assume that like for the evo, we will be able to change that over time.

no, this happens among all the carriers. Samsung is the slowest cell phone MFG to release updates for their current phone models. Unless the list changed, and I would have to go find it on engadget, HTC was the highest, and above samsung by a good deal.
I know what you mean coming from the Incredible. But I've gotten used to the slcd just don't look at your other for a while. I think its pointless to look for perfection especially on a phone screen. You'd need a color calibrated broadcast monitor for perfection. One thing i noticed is the slcd is much better in direct sunlight. So a little less brightness and clarity keeping in mind I can't really notice at normal viewing distances and the fact that you can see the screen outside seems like an ok trade off. (Yes if you hold it really close to your eyes and study it you can but... Just my thoughts on it.

Went out for a walk yesterday w/the Bolt using Cardio Trainer, my god it was impossible to see the screen in the sun ... didn't feel like trying to tweak settings, make brighter, etc., while I was on the move - but will do so next time before I start the run just in case I want to see where I'm at.
I definitely notice a difference between the AMOLED Incredible (my wife's phone, formerly mine) and the TB. The colors are off - too brilliant in the wrong way. Blues are purplish and Reds are off too. Its even worse when comparing to the iPhone, which is what I have been carrying lately. Not happy with it - the crispness of the iPhone makes this look blown out. As my wife said "It's like the iPhone is HD and the Thunderbolt is SD." The additional real estate is nice, but definitely prefer the Inc AMOLED and the iPhone Retina.
Ooof.

I don't personally do video/photo editing on my phone or watch movies, which is the only reasons I could think of a screen truly mattering. I have the DROID Incredible currently w/ the AMOLED and well generally I can't really tell any functional difference between it and the Thunderbolt screen I played with in a Verizon store after ordering one for myself (arrives tomorrow).
I am a bit of a video/audiophile but only on things like my TV & computer monitors, but can't see why it'd matter for such a small screen either.
Has anyone had any experience w/ the Thunderbolt in direct sunlight? I can't see anything on my Incredible when it's in the sun. I could at least get a vague idea w/ my old iPhone 3G... which I find a more important factor than the color quality/pixel density on a phone.

I get what you are saying, but your cavalier dismissal ignores the fact that other devices exist that have superior quality. Its not like I am wishing for something ideal that isnt possible. One might expect that when paying top dollar for a "flagship" device you would get some good quality hardware. Not saying the device is flawed, just that the screen definitely isnt as good as phones that came a year before it.
As for properly functioning software, I doubt you could argue that this is functioning perfectly - maybe for you it is and maybe my experiences are anecdotal but I and my coworker are experiencing random reboots, problems with calendar sync, and data transfer problems where you have to reboot to resume connection. I will also volunteer that our Verizon rep said she is seeing very high return rates on the Thunderbolt due to software issues. Again, maybe anecdotal and maybe "some people you just can't please" but sometimes good enough isnt enough in the face of alternatives that work better out of the gate.

The amoiled screen has a amazing color saturation; however the low subpixel count makes text look very pixelated. I much prefer the slcd screen for viewing web pages. Makes the small text so much clearer. I had the Nexus S prior to this phone and I think the Thunderbolt is much nicer overall, including the display (for my usage).

The bionic will have a better qhd screen but if it is like the atrix then it I'd using the pentile matrix and will more than likely look even more "fuzzy" than the bolt. Do a Google search for arstechnica pentile matrix they have a great article on it and after using super lcd on my incredible (I had the amoled version as well and the nexus one) I much prefer the super lcd to any amoled with pentile. Plus the bionic won't even have the better colors like amoled. That is a big fail on motorola for making their first qhd screens pentile. I have to believe the screen on the thunderbolt will have to look better.
OK, there is definately major variences between screens on different phones. I just got a replacement for a dead speaker, and well...the screen has much more contrast, and does not wash out much at an angle. Im suprised to see such a difference between the 2.
I actually love this screen. I came from the Nexus One AMOLED screen and I prefer the TBolt. The screen is brighter on the Tbolt and the colors are just ever so slightly less saturated than the AMOLED which is actually a good thing in some cases(movies and skin tones)
I'm with you, I miss the blacks of my amoled dinc.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy s2 or Motorola Atrix

Hi my HTC hero has ran past its time so now im looking for a new phone i feel a dual core will be the most worth it due to as more and more phones that are dual core are released more apps will utilize them. I have decided not to go with an lg or htc because of previous experiences so now I'm looking at either the atrix or sgs2. Should I wait for the sgs2 or just get the atrix now...
Hold out, at least until the Atrix bootloader is unlocked, otherwise, the SGS2 would probably be the best bet.
Get the S2 better hardware and no moto-bleah !
go with samsung!
thinner than iphone, super lightweight, 8mp cam w/ flash, 2mp front facing, and overall design is just amazing. oh and dont forget the super amoled plus display! moto atrix is indeed nice, but i hate motoblur.
lg was a refrence to optimus 2x and htc refrence to sensation
Samsung for sure. Doubt the atrix bootloader will ever be unlocked.

yea atrix sucks, I played with it at bell not impressed
Galaxy S II, no doubt.
The Atrix's main advantage was its incredible specs, but its specs is exceed by the S II. The only advantage the Atrix has is slightly higher resolution and a more powerful battery.
So overall, with better XDA support and higher specs, it seems like the S II is a no brainer.
I would choose Atrix for its shape, and higher resolution.Yet Galaxy S II has better hardware, depends on what you care.
Samsung all the way. Larger screen and Samsung quality. Also no Blur.
I have to go with other people here, SGS2.... and i'm putting my money where my mouth is by finaly replacing my HD2 with one.
Seriously, the Atrix laptop dock is a gimmick in my opinion. If you are going to carry that around you may as well carry your laptop!

You act like those are slight advantages. It's not a slightly bigger battery. It's like factorably bigger than the GS2's.
And the screen resolution is a huge deal. GS2 is using a big screen with a WVGA resolution. Not only is the resolution on the Atrix better, but it has a good screen size with much better pixel density. Aside from perhaps color saturation, everything will look better and crisper on the Atrix display.
HTC has the inspire 4G on AT&T and the display resolution/pixel density is outright terrible compared to the Atrix when held side by side. Not even close to being comparable and I doubt that resolution on even a sAMOLED II panel will be good enough to best it.
The bootloader is the biggest issue. None of the other hardware differences are that big of a deal that they should sway you from one phone or another, IMO.
Both TouchWiz and Blur are worse than Sense, but Moto almost always has much better widgets than Samsung and their Exchange Client and other Value-Adds are typically better. Samsung tends to have better Social Network integration in TouchWiz, though.
But if you want to MOD, then yes... The bootloader will be the issue and the GS2 may be the clear winner.
Also, maybe it's just me but Motorola devices typically function better as actual phones than Samsung devices...
Coming here, where ROMS and Apps are thought up and developed, and asking about a phone with a locked Bootloader(basically a huge "F**K YOU" to everyone here) is not going to get you an objective answer. May as well go and ask about EQ2 on the WoW Forums.

Anyway, picked up my SGS2 last night from Phones4U in Slough. Very impressive bit of technology but it does feel very cheap and the back battery cover is terrible! (it doesn't pop off but it does feel like it came from a pound shop)
The screen..... well....
My GF has an Omnia 7 running an AMOLED screen and to be honest, we put all the brightness up on both screens and then opened the BBC website and, if I'm honest, we couldn't see much diference. The Yellow was defo better on the SGS2 but then the purples were brighter on hers! I can only hope the "super" part of my screen applies to the battery usage as it doesn't appear any diferent..... not that thats a bad thing, the AMOLED on the O7 is excellent.
The phone is stunningly fast though, even when looking at the 3d menu's in SPB Shell 3D and spinning its world location globe in 3d.

HTC Vivid, Samsung SkyRocket or Samsung Galaxy S2. Which One?

Ok so here is the question. I have a choice of those 3 and I am not certain which way to go. I am looking for suggestions that you all have from using the devices and I will provide some sort of criteria so you can give me a better idea.
1. A UI that is intuitive and not a royal pain in the rear to deal with.
2. Seeing as I tend to like to take photo's and watch Movies I would like a device that has a wide range of files it can play but also has a Very good screen and doesn't suffer from banding of lines through the screen and also has good viewability while out doors.
3. Takes good photos and video.
4. I don't care if I have LTE or not considering I am on a 200MB data plan and ALWAYS turn off data unless I Need it when I am out and even than I look for Wi-Fi first.
5. I would Like FM Radio but not a Deal Breaker just like I would Like NFC but again not a deal breaker.
6. Has good Volume when listening through headphones. Don't care so much about external speaker.
7. Has good record at keeping up with Google OS Updates as in ICS and such
Also for those who will say Wait for a different device to come out, that is not an option considering I am running out of time to make a decision within the 30 day return window. I think I have like 8 days left.
Anyway I await information about what you all think and thanks in advance to all who do answer.
None of the above. Import a Galaxy Note instead, it bests all 3 of those. 5.3" AMOLED 1280x800 resolution with a 1.4 GHz Exynos chip.
The SkyRocket is basically the SGS2 with a larger screen. I would choose either of the Samsungs before I would an HTC. I don't much care for the low-quality HTC brand.
droid razr seems awesome!
Well i think the Notes out since it looks like you will be buying on contract. If you are buying off contract i would recommend the Galaxy nexus which comes out this week and should be available for import soon
The skyrocket is like the galaxy s2 except it has a 4.5 in. Super amoled plus display and 1. 5ghz dual core. If you like to watch movies or videos on your phone then go for the skyrocket

I am confused by this post.
According to you... Samsung's plastic phones are of higher quality then HTCs aluminum uni body phones?
Please explain how u came to this conclusion lol? Please stop spreading BS... average consumer is already ill informed as it is...
The vivid is plastic too, so HTC has no advantages there IRT build quality.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
HTC phones have a much sturdier build quality than any other phone manufacturer I know.
OK so a little confused by the galaxy note. Looks like it is released in the UK so I can't get it as I am on att network in the US so I am limited to phones that are available there.
I hate to say it but if i were buying now it would be a Samsung. I don't like plasticky phones, but i do like phones that have quality components, i.e Power buttons that don't die every few months of use, speakers that you can actually hear, or digitizers that don't start registering touches across the screen from where you actually touch it.
Have HTC released a phone yet with a camera that's on par with the ones found in other manufacturers devices, or one that doesn't run through an entire battery in under 4 hours of use? Do thay release devices with beautiful SAMOLED + screens?
which one would you prefer?pick up you prefer one
Made my choice, out of the 3 I went with the vivid. The build quality is there, fills solid in hand. The battery life is decent (1620 mah) and the screen is much sharper than the skyrocket's. Not everyone likes the oversaturated samoleds, and I didn't want to end up with a wvga screen (stretched to 4.5" looks really bad in my opinion) especially now, when all new highend devices of 2012 will have high resolution.

I was at the At&t store checking out the Galaxy S2, S2 Skyrocket, and the HTC Vivid. I can see why there are many who are fans of the Galaxy S2 phones. The Galaxy S2 is skinny, light in weight, vibrant screen, and has a large battery. However I ultimately believed the Vivid is a better phone for what I was looking for. I found GS2 phones feeling a bit cheap on the outer casing. The plastic felt too thin all the way around and didn't feel very solid. The color on the screen looks very very impressive but often feels unnatural and over saturated (like putting contrast on your TV all the way up). Particularly on the Skyrocket, the WVGA resolution feels very inadequate for screens 4.5 inches and above. You literally can see pixels as they look over stretched on 4.5 and qHD just do a much better job at that size. What really pushed me to the Vivid was that Sense just feel and functions much better to me than Samsung's TouchWiz to an otherwize an impressive hardware.
But either way, both phones will accomplish (pretty much) any task just the same
Edit: looks like you made your pick, good choice
I would leave AT&T! they get crappy android phones. I left AT&T for T-Mobile and got the HTC Sensation 4G and love it, and my bill is half the price of AT&T's now
The vivid does 1080p at 60fps. That's reason enough for some people to get it. I'm Considering dropping tmobile for AT&T just for that camcorder on that phone.

Trying to decide between two phones - Is pentile really that bad?

I'm wanting to upgrade from a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, atm I can't choose between either a ZTE Grand X or a Huawei Ascend P1. Both are supposed to be about £200 and both have almost identical specs except the Huawei is slightly faster and has a pentile screen. Specs
To me the most important part of a phone is the screen, but I have never heard anyone say anything good about Pentile screens. Are they really as bad as people say? Which phone should I go for?
Think about samsung galaxy, htc one x, or nokia lumia. I used all anh I think u won't regret when buy them. Or u can buy used phone and install ubuntu Miui, best rom ever.

Pentile isn't bad at all. Don't let people tell you otherwise.

Have you thought of...
Have you thought of Samsung Galaxy 3 S?
This is an issue that gets discussed on blogs, forums, and in podcasts all the time. Frankly, it's a ridiculous debate to have in any of those venues, because the answer is entirely subjective; it's all in the eye of the beholder. Luckily, all you need to do to find your answer, is go look at one
The pentile screen issue is not about objective quality, it's about a subjective experience. It doesn't take anything beyond looking at one, to figure out whether you like it.
Personally, I can't stand them. They drive me nuts. Before my HTC, I was a Samsung user, and I hated every minute of the pentile display. I can't elegantly articulate why I hated it so much, but I really did. When the S3 came out, I got excited. I've wanted to upgrade my HTC Sensation for a while, but the One X's non-removable battery was a deal killer. I thought that maybe with the higher density, I could find some peace with a pentile display in the S3. So I went to look at a demo unit, and within 30 seconds, I hated it. Whenever I use one, I feel like I'm looking at a broken screen.
But do you know what is almost as consistent as my hatred for pentile displays? The fact that if someone is standing next to me when I do the comparison, they'll disagree about 50% of the time.
In other words, it's a wash. I can't stand the displays, but I know other people who love them. Still more can't even tell the difference. It's a subjective debate. It's not one that you can have on the internet, and it's not one that you can gain guidance on from a podcast or news article. It's like saying "what's better, a silver or a black car?". There's no answer - you just have to go look at them.
I don't like the pentile. It is crispy as they say. But after a while it becomes like it's not real LOL I mean it is to much colors and to bright for my eyes.
I don't wanna speak for the burn-in that occurs if you use same widgets long time. Some people maybe would disagree, but i am saying for my expirience with pentile .....
Pentile is not that bad. You can notice the grainy looking when you use a microscope but I doubt you'll do that .

Screen Picture Quality

I am enjoying the S3 so far with no huge complaints. Today I pulled out my original Droid Incredible to wipe and hand it down. The S3 replaced this only 2 weeks ago and I immediately noticed how beautiful the Incredible screen was compared to the S3. Yes the size is no comparison but the clarity and brightness of the original Incredible is so much better.

good lord, you're kidding, right? aside from the fact that the inc lcd is so far away from the actual digitizer compared to the s3, the pentile display on the inc makes it so easy to see pixels without even looking. i had mine powered up yesterday too, and compared to my rezound and my s3, it's got NOTHING on them.
The original DInc has a AMOLED and is beautiful. From the signatures of the replies I see a lot of Samsung owners so I know this is going nowhere but AMOLED beats all others.
If I can be called trolling then I can reply with what fanboys....a little kidding
you do know that the S3 is SUPER Amoled, right? with a higher PPI, higher resolution, etc?
and you can look at my sig and notice i own the Eris, Inc, View Tablet, and Rezound.
I guess it is like going to Best Buy and looking at the wall of TV and one person says I like that picture and the person next to you says no I like that one.....
I think the brightness seems less on the GS3, especially outside. Still like the GS3 over the new Inc 4G which could have been my other choice. HTC made a really small screen on the Inc 4G compared to the current market.
Wow I've owned both currently gs3 and I have to disagree COMPLETELY . sorry BT that's my opinion. Gs3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>dinc IMO way way to the next evolution of it don't matter. Again just my opinion

I agree with the OP.
Had an Inc, most beautiful screen ever, hands down. There's just something about it that radiates brilliance.

You'd think those stores would tweek the settings a bit so they'd look their best, instead of all different.

The droid charge screen beats the sgs3 hands down
VERIZON GALAXY S 3
With all of the Android devices I've owned, the best I've seen for clarity is the Rezound, no question. I've purposely looked for imperfections in the pixel layout and it's damn hard to see, only thing is the screen just isn't as vivid. I agree, the Charge also had a beautiful screen, but the one I had was plagued by the infamous "yellowing" on the right side of the screen that many GS2 owners experienced, that and the low RAM forced me to return it. The brightest screen I've used was on the Bionic, that thing was blinding on an all-white screen turned up all the way.
The GS3 screen is a little of everything. It's bright enough for me, very clear for a Pentile screen, vivid and clear colors, no imperfections... love it. So far this phone has been great, especially the data/GPS signal. That was surprising.
the S3 screen looks 100x better than the nexus, but i remember hearing it's the same tech..is that true? cuz my nexus looks awful lol it had the yellow tint (before i color modd'ed it) and there's terrible banding throughout...there's none on my S3
Coming from a thunderbolt, the SG3 screen looks so much better
