I have about 160+ apps installed in my xoom, and it almost needs 1min50 secs to boot up. is this normal? what can i do to boost the boot up time? i m in stock 3.2

Use something like Titanium Backup to backup all your apps on Xoom (or any other rrooted android device) then uninstall the apps you don't use much/anymore/etc... It'll backup the app itself and the data that goes along with it (although it prob won't backup things like your game saves, just leave them where they're at on the sdcard whether it's internal or external). If you decide later you need the app again, just fire up TB and restore it, quick and simple. Sometimes after a restore of certain apps, you may need to reboot the Xoom to get all the functionallity back but aside from that, you get to keep your apps as backup and restore them anytime while reducing your overhead of having a pile of active apps that you don't always use...
This is what I do anyway on both my Xoom and my Epic. I typically don't uninstall apss through TB although you can, I just use it to backup and restore. I do the uninstalling through the normal system settings. That's just a preference tho...

EDIT - When I suggested this to you, I was assuming that your stock 3.2 setup was rooted. If not, then TB won't do you any good and the only other advice it what solarnz offered, delete some apps.
250+ Apps here, over 5 Minutes Boot Time. Running Tiamat Hammerhead and already Reinstalled everything once. Boot Time caused by "Unpacking Native Libraries" of every single application. I hate that -.-

200+ apps on my Xoom and the boot time is still solid as can be! For the rooters: Try using an app called Autostarts to disable all of those unwanted apps that make their way into the startup list. For the non rooters: Autorun Manager.
A lot of times, apps will attach themselves to the startup list even though they do not need it, such as a game. Why would you want a game booting up with your Xoom? I wouldn't, that's for sure. It's pointless, takes up memory, and it makes the boot time worse.
For the most part: Wipe out every single one of the startup apps that are not a part of the system, or as many as you need to. If you disable the user startup apps, you will have a more solid boot time no doubt. Almost none of the apps you install will ever need to boot up with your Xoom, unless you want it to. For me, I keep only a select few apps at startup such as: Equalizer, AdFree, and SetCPU. And chances are, if you have a ton of apps... your startup list will be massive, to say the least when you load up the app for the first time.

Now I know that android is linux based, therefore there is no need for a registry cleaner, but with the constant install and then removal of apps (now i am assuming here) there must be some sort of footprint left behind which needs deleting?

I second Cachemate. Been using it for months now and finally bought the "Pro" version. More like donation-ware. It was especially useful when I felt I was running out of space after app installs; however, now that I'm running an AOSP rom and have the option of using Apps2SD, space on the phone is less scarce. Either way, I run it every now and then to clean things up, particularly before making a Nandroid backup.
i am not sure if this is right because i am also quite new to android, but:
android is not windows. When you install a programm there is one .apk.. probably it creates a folder on the sd.. thats it. There is no registry, programms do not mess around @ system files.
Uninstalling means deleting the apk.. perhaps you have to remove the folder @ sdcard yourself.. thats all i guess.
I installed a couple of roms without wiping and many many apps, and my system is still clean what i can see (and fast like on the first day..)

Cachemate is good, but Titanium really works (root needed)
I paid for Titanium because my brand new Samsung Galaxy S 4G started having low phone storage on the first day. Couldn't move a bunch of stuff, so I just did Superoneclick and rooted it, then installed Titanium. I was able to free up space on the phone itself (it's loaded with bloatware) by moving some stuff, but it also has a cache cleaner that got rid of another 25 MB of data that I didn't need. So, short story is, if you just need to clean you cache, cachemate is probably fine, but if you need more robust options for system maintenance, consider Titanium.
Well when you uninstall an application you not only have the .apk in /data/app/ but the application data in /data/data/ which is removed when you properly uninstall the application, not just deleting the apk. The "cache" you are seeing is browser, maps etc. data. You can manually do this in application manager by clicking the name then clear cache.
The only extra data you might have would be if the application has data on the sdcard which I find most applications do not remove if it's an external download such as skins. So there really is no need for any type of cleaning tools, none of which would clean out anything on /system/ unless it's a rooted application so there should be no need for that.
i tried cachemate and i can say that phone was reborn after it... it started to fly... 13 mb was cleared...

Cachemate never seems to work for me. It always say my cache has been recently cleared and there is nothing to clean although I didnt set it on auto or clean it before. Werid.

Is there any way to do this without having to re-install all my apps on my phone? I have a lot of apps installed and would not want to lose my data for them.
Also: I have a HTC Magic with 2.1 and cyanogen mod. It is starting to really get slow so I would like to do this upgrade.

Try using Titanium Backup from the market. It backs up market links, apps, and app data. Also it backs up launcher's settings.
I would personally just do a clean wipe since Android 2.2 will automatically download and install all your apps.
Titanium Backup Fail
Downloaded the free and paid vesions of TB to a rooted ATT Captivate. Installed normally. Got the latest busybox and did a compete back up. All still ok. Flashed the new 2.2beta8.1 (designgears/cognition ROM) onto the device with Clockwork ROM manager. Still normal. Noticed after the restart, that FroYo installed, and as expected, all my apps were gone, only the stock apps remainng. I started the resoration process with market downloads of with TB and then TB Pro downloads (again) to get set up to go forward with the restore function and replace my apps and settings into the device.
I went to restore and here is where the "trouble" begins. I am unable to restore from the extermal SD card. No method for getting to it from within the program. Despite carefully reading everything I could find on your website and the forums, beforo beginning with the first steps for TB free, and then immediately into TBP, and carefully accomplishing the initial backup (which worked without error and stored onto the external sd card) something is not working the way it should, (I feel).
So I turned to the the PC next. I mounted the sd's and found the file. Copied it over to the root directory on the internal card from the ext sd card with the supplied data cable: ran TBP restore again. TBP indiactes back up successful, but it doesn't resotre anything backed up from the device under 2.1 Eclair_update1.
Still I do not have my contacts, deja office, tune in radio, ect. I did not have a lot of apps, but they are not reappearing when I do the restore.
The starred locs in maps came back, tho I actually think those favs, etc. are stored online.
So, working from memory here, the apps that failed to make the trip: Kindle and my one book Moby **** (a fun re-read - btw I realize now that I was too young to appreciate this when I read it in high school), Bar Code Scanner, BT GPS, Deja Office, Tricorder. None of my 1050 or so Conacts, Tasks, Memos, Notes, were restored. When I look at the Android Market app, and go to the download tab, it only remembers the paid apps I installed, none of the free apps show up in my list of downloaded programs. TuneIn Radio and its dozen or so presets are also missing. These are the missing apps I can recall at this instant. Oddly enough, the calendar appoitments did make the trip, maybe because google online is syncing them?
So I guess you could say the TB PRO app has been pretty much of a flop for me thus far, but I am hopeful that it will be fully functional soon. I'm wondering if the 2.2 ROM upgrade has some implication in the inability of the program to restore from the external sd card? Maybe there is something I missed in your documentation?
I could rebuild everything one step at a time, but I'd rather see the back-up program function as advertied and save my time. So I will pause here in my efforts, run with what I have, and wait to hear from you.

Unlocked, Rooted, Factory Image. Until the custom ROM scene get's built up, can unused apps be removed from the phone? I don't use 98% of the Google stuff. Can I just delete the apk's from /system/app and reboot? Any other locations for apps? I've disabled what I could, but I just want remove stuff and slim it down. Thx!

Yup, just freeze or uninstall... freeze if you purchased the key.
As you said in your first post, you can just use something like root explorer or solid explorer to manually delete the apps you don't want from /system/app
That's what I've done
If yours is unlocked after rooing, please do a backup if custom recovery has been installed first - extra steps for good measures, even when we can easily restore factory image, etc.
AntTek App is my favorite, download from Play Store - when in doubt, just freeze it first so it will no longer show or display as APP in the listing. Reboot & profit, and run with a leaner factory rom - probably good for extending battery life with a few tweaks on all those unneeded background apps (i.e. Cell Broadcast Alert ... that's a good one, especially for our xda-members overseas - NOT !!)

No running list no.
My advice is freeze and test as opposed to uninstalling; and don't go hog wild trying to disable things that are obviously system applications or else you risk running into trouble that you may not be able to fix other than doing factory resets and starting all over again. IMO I will not be trying to do system level changes until we have a custom recovery from which I can make nandroid backups that I can fall back onto.
Thus far other than the Knox apps I've only frozen the extra applications that i dont use like the Cisco app or the remote PC app etc.
I'm on stock ROM and is there any option extract app data without root? ADB doesn't work maybe app developer doesn't give permission because of sensitive data. You know, rooting process or to install custom recovery even without root cause wipes the phone data. So they'll not work for me. Is there any option to solve it that I don't know or overlook?

Better apps let you save their data. For ones like Poweramp it's a god sent.
If you're doing a hard reload it may be best not to save most app data though as it may have been the cause of the crash.
Use a separate data drive if phone supports a SD card. Always keep critical data at least 2x backed up ie to laptop or a hdd.
Use AkpExport to make copies of all user apps and system updates to use during reloads. That way there's no guesswork and no Playstore is needed. Makes reloads much faster too.
I can reload and be 99% done is about 2 hrs now.
Lol after 2 back to back forced reloads I streamline the process. Doing a reload now is easy. Reloads aren't needed often but they are eventually necessary.
Plan ahead as all it takes is one unstable app or very rarely a virus, trojan etc.
For PC clones I use only the base app load and configure the system/homescreen settings. All data is kept on a data hdd not the OS hhd. Apps like antivirus are never on the clone.
That way my clone copy is always relevant.
