Gingerbread for the Charge coming? - Verizon Droid Charge

With all these leaked releases looking pretty functional, we must be getting a GB update pretty soon right? Anyone heard any good rumors?

Yes, P3Droid pretty much confirmed it. We should be getting GB soon(hopefully), within the next month.

I asked p3droid about any incoming leaks for the Charge last week. He said to keep my pail handy, so I'm optimistic.

And you should be its not off as far as some seem to think. That said the current file he talks about runs FABULOUS. And no I don't have it but was able to get mine flashed and found out it is the most current he's seen as well.

That's what the developers need now. The source code is needed for ALL AOSP roms.

They don't release the source code for Android itself though (which is under an Apache license), just the GPL components.

EP1Q has been working decent for me but I did get the static on some phone calls today for the first time. I have not been using BT either though.

I'm running an early copy of Gingerbread. Will I need to go back to Froyo to get the official release of GB? I hate to have to freeze and delete the bloatware from Samsung and Verizon twice

That will depend on if we get a leak of the build w/ radios. Everything but the modems can be flashed in CWM after the devs get a hold of it and add root.
If we don't get a odin of the modems, you will have to go back to stock EE4 to recieve the update, I believe. There is always the chance that you will be prompted to update even though you are on GB. You will need to be on RFS file system and have stock recovery to apply the update.

Stock Froyo or Gingerbread ROMs?

Do any stock Froyo or Gingerbread ROMS exist for the Captivate? I see all of these aftermarket ROMS posted but I don't like all the themes or added programs they come with. I just want a stock ROM.
There is AT&T stock 2.2 and Rogers stock 2.2 depending on which Captivate you have.
2.3 has not been released for the Galaxy S. It was leaked for the i9000, but that ROM isn't working yet. The only real 2.3 ROM for the Captivate is CM7 which is not yet stable.

Yeah, I'm running CM7 right now and it's stable, but definitely still has some bugs. Feature wise, it seems packed, but some of the bugs I am experiencing are QUITE irritating for daily use.

Which is exactly why it's not a stable ROM yet, in addition to a few things under the hood.
But let's not get too off topic, the OP wants stock ROMs.

Seriously? If you want a stock ROM then just use the one available from your carrier. Cognition 4 is as close as a custom ROM can be to stock, but minus the bloatware and it has some minor performance tweaks. This place isn't in the business of creating "stock" ROMs.
For stock like feel, i'd recommend one of two roms. Andromeda 1.2 (unthemed) or Cog 4.1. Andro is based off of the Armani Captivate 2.2 and the devs did a fantastic job of making it somewhat minimal and still has all the goodies. They also added a few other nice touches. Cog is based off of official ATT 2.2 with the bloatware gone and lagfix installed. It is also very nice but didn't hold my attention the way Andro does. As was already mentioned CM7 is ok for people that know how to trouble shoot their phones and can deal with the bugs. It's NOT meant for people new to their phones and flashing.

AT&T hasn't pushed an update for the Captivate. Even if they did it would still be loaded with crapware that slow the phone down.
So, it's impossible to get a stock rom easily?

The update came from Samsung and not ATT. The easiest way to get a "stock rom" is to use keis to do the update. Yes it will come with all the bloat from ATT. If you dont want the bloat then there are ways to remove them, gone over many times in the forum which you would have found had you done a search.
As for Stock Gingerbread roms, well to be honest we will most likely not see an ATT stock gingerbread as the 2.2 update is most likely the only one we will get through official channels

The most up to date stock rom you can get is 2.2 from Samsung Kies which can be downloaded here: samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SGH-I897ZKAATT.
This also includes the usb drivers. Just connect your phone to your computer and update.

[Q] Should I Update To Leaked 2.2 Or Wait For Official 3/22/11

Just got a Samsung Mesmerize for USCC and was told that Froyo will be pushing out soon. Should I root and update to leaked 2.2 or wait for official?
Also I was hearing that once Official Froyo is released Cyanogenmod ROM should become available? Is that correct and/or will more some become available once the Official update is released.

It's a personal choice.
If you upgrade your phone at all (even if only doing custom 2.1 installs) you are going to most likely have to use Odin to go back to stock 2.1-update1 in order to install the official release (I'm pretty sure your phone will have to be as it was out of the box to install their update)
And no, cyanogen MOD just doesn't become available once the source is released, there still has to be people to work on building it - but it will be a lot easier to do once we have official source code - then you may see a team get together to build a supported version for the galaxy s model (which we could then port to mes). Also, once we have that we can also expect to see the kernel MOD's make it into 2.2 from 2.1.
My question is, why is everyone so concerned about getting the official drop, when i'ts going to be bloated to hell just like stock 2.1 is? Soon after it drops, you're going to see a custom deodexed and non bloated ROM and a new kernel - so you're most likely going to end up upgrading to that anyway. So in my opinion, upgrade now - then skip the official bloat release and upgrade to our customized version once i'ts complete (built off of the official 2.2 source).
What Version of 2.2 is the most up to date EC10? And it wont update when the official OTA is dropped correct? Its actually for a friend of mine I have a Dinc and only have experience in that.
On a side note. Why is this Odin thing so popular here and not Flashing with Clockwork like on the Dinc?
Phillip Fry said:

And btw, it isn't an OTA update - it would be downloaded on your PC and installed via Kies. (not sure of the details, but this is what I've heard many times)
2.2 is already at the stores as of yesterday, our tech was given permission to upgrade the Mesmerizes in stock and employee phones, so if you were to buy a new one it'd be running froyo..
I personally got my own i500 upgraded yesterday morning and got to spend the last 24 hours reinstalling all my apps.. USCC should make an announcement on Facebook very soon.
I'm interested in removing some of this bloatware, what would be the best way to do that running the offical 2.2?

[Q] How to update to GB

Hi guys most of you might find this question silly but there are some of us newcomers who are still getting into this!
So, I rooted my phone, have ROM Manager and CWM Recovery, version 3 and my question is how we're going to update to official GB when it becomes available? Will we do it through official T-Mobile update, or will some of you guys make it available for us?
Thank you all!

Yes, that's the case. The leak has issues (which makes sense, it's not a finished build), and almost all Gingerbread mods are based on the leak so they have the same issues. I know CM7 is using the Gingerbread source instead and has fixed a lot of the issues, but not all of them.
The official update is not only going to be completely stable (hopefully) but will come bundled with better drivers/kernel support which will fix most of the common issues with the phone (hopefully).
I've gone through an Over The Air update to Android before, and if it's like what I experienced, you're going to get a pop-up that asks if you want to update now or later. Choose later if you want to keep root, someone here will have the official build rooted probably within the hour but definitely within the first couple of days.
In the mean time though, don't be scared of trying out one of the ROMs that are available. I swear by CM7, but I've heard wonderful things about EagleBlood and Ultimate too.

I have heard that official updating the rooted phone could actually brick it? And when a mod is nightly version, does it mean it it not completely stable? I am interested in CM7, but I could not find a stable version on their site.

I don't know if it will brick or not, my OTA was not rooted. And CM7 nightlies are NOT completely stable, but they're on build 58 by now and the ROM works perfectly fine. The only issue I can see with the phone is the top bar they added to the notifications menu that has toggle-able settings like WIFI, GPS, etc sometimes doesn't show up and in the camera, it calls both cameras "back" instead of one being "front".
But if you're concerned with stability that much, use the leak or EagleBlood.

Should i prepare for the ota?

I know many have said they are gonna flash to stock and stuff for the ota. Is this really necessary? I would need to stay unrooted, which would take restoring my apps out of the question. Won't we have an Odin file on Tuesday anyway? plus I'd hate to not get it on the 1st day.

if I helped in any way hit that thanks button!
Updating ota while rooted could permanently lose root brick phone etc be safe and hold off
if I helped in any way hit that thanks button!
I don't understand the rush to get the OTA. It's an EP4 build, which means is going to be pretty close to the leaks we have right now. If you're rooted, I'd just hold off and wait for someone to post the Odin.
Personally, I'm going to at least wait for the deodexed version and some themes.
Obviously the first 2 didn't read the op. I know you're not supposed to do that. That's why I'm asking, since i really need titanium backup.
Sent from my Gummy Charged GBE 2.1 using XDA App
I understand that if you rooted and flashed a deferent kernel you shouldn't accept the OTA, however I just have root and several Bloatware apps frozen with Titanium Back up..... Can I accept the OTA as long as I unfreeze the apps? I have no custom Roms or themes...All I did was flash SU with oden... I don't even have CWR.
Thanks for the patience with the noob question.
if I remember correctly the OTA will not even go through if you're rooted or have any root apps/permissions as there is a script in the download that checks on boot

I think it depends on the ROM. Some ROMs have the code in them to stop an OTA update but some don't. I've accepted an OTA while rooted before but I was on a stock rooted ROM and all that happened was I lost root. Not saying that the same will happen with this phone though.
We do not have an ODIN file for this build, and we won't unless someone leaks it.
So, if you want the OTA radio's you HAVE to accept the OTA, if you are satisfied w/ EP4P you don't need to do anything. After the OTA is out, someone will post a CWM flashable zip that will give you the ROM/Kernel and keep root.
But does anyone know what the version the OTA is going to be?

In the words of imnuts, it makes perfect sense. Manufacturers like Samsung and such are constantly sending OTA updates to the Carriers. The Carrier chooses what build get's pushed out as the OTA update. It's quite possible that on older source code got released before an "acceptable" OTA get's pushed out.
Here's what I think happened.
Samsung probably had a stable build with EP4D, but there's always room for improvement so they also produced EP4P. Samsung released the source code for EP4D but Verizon decided not to accept the EP4D build and instead are releasing the EP4P build as the OTA (if in fact the OTA is the EP4P build, no one knows.)
Again, I want everyone reading this to know that this is just my opinion and I am in now way stating all this as fact. So remember that before you reply telling me that I'm wrong.
As to updating your brothers phone, it really wouldn't hurt. After the OTA is released you could always go back to stock then load the OTA. That's up to you and your brother though. Just saying if he ends up not liking the EP4P build or something, it's really not that hard to just change it to something else. (Just a little time consuming is all.)
OK, that sort of makes sense.
But... if you were in my position, spc_hicks09, would you upgrade from GummyCharged GBE 2.1 or would you wait? I've already got my Droid Charge running EP4P and it runs great.
So what do you think? Should I just bite the bullet and load EP4P on his phone?

Honestly, I would. However, that's just because I'm the type of person that has to always try to get the latest and greatest lol. I would go ahead an upgrade to the EP4P, if the OTA seems better, then you could always just go back down to stock EE4 then upgrade to the OTA.
I definitely hope the rooted version of the OTA comes out pretty quickly after the release of the regular OTA. I've been loving these other gingerbread releases

The source has been out for a while now...I'm thinking a few weeks, at least.
Has anyone checked to see whether this KK4 is the same as what was leaked two months ago - there's always the possibility of slipstreamed changes without reversioning, especially since there are definite bugs that remain in the leaked version, e.g., the kernel crashes when too many apps are are installed to SD.
At a minimum, given that the linked instructions describe this as a full wipe, the ROM is packaged differently than the previous leaks.
LOL. couldn't have come at a better time! /sarcasm
Anyone got an alternate mirror in the event the Kies Mini upgrade fails for me, as it did previously when I tried to upgrade to Froyo? It would be a nice backup in the event I need to go back to stock (assuming, although I probably shouldn't, that in the two months since KK4 leaked, something had to get updated.

I knew that that my post wasn't dev (as I stated in my own post) but I posted it there so the devs could see the "Official" release was out. That way they could use it as the source to their ROMs for KK4.

Just a warning This is all over, so I'm sure they all know about it. Hopefully it'll bring some stability to our Captivate ROMs (they won't have to be based on I9000 now, although I have no idea what else the I9000 functionality brings). I am not a developer, just an educated user.

Then is there anyone working on a custom kernel based on KK4? If it has been out for a few weeks, I would have expected a thread or 2 by now with BLN and voodoo sound. Developer interest seems to be waning for our cappy's.

This is the same Rom/Kernel developers have been working on for the last month, so yes there is a lot of custom kernel, but none with BLN or voodoo color due to lack of source for it.

Has anyone confirmed that this is in fact the same code that was leaked back in November? Just because it is named the same, it doesn't mean it will be exactly the same.

I have a hard time believing ATT would release such an unstable release. It just can't be the same KK4 leaked back in November. It is inconcievable.
Upgraded my cappy without a hitch.. Unfortunately, it was then powered off and put back in my Galaxy SII box (now my backup phone)

Assuming this is the same as the leak; go to the dev KK4 thread and download the fugu kernel and the KK4 kernel
Flash fugu via Odin let it start and bootloop; pull battery; flash KK4 kernel
