Hi guys most of you might find this question silly but there are some of us newcomers who are still getting into this!
So, I rooted my phone, have ROM Manager and CWM Recovery, version 3 and my question is how we're going to update to official GB when it becomes available? Will we do it through official T-Mobile update, or will some of you guys make it available for us?
Thank you all!
Yes...
you should be about to get it either way. If you get the official update you will probably lose root... If you wait a few there will be a rooted version posted by one of the many xda members...

One more dumb question: Why is everybody so excited about the official GB update, when we have right now a few GB leaked versions with some custom ROMs (Bionix from TeamWhiskey, etc... ) available, for which as I hear, many say are excellent? Is this official one gonna be better in any significant way than these custom already out? Thanks! )

It will come with an official GB kernel and hopefully updated battery drivers and A2DP functionality...Amongst other LG fixes (again, hopefully).

OK, I get it... So, all these unofficial GBs are sort of limited because they lack these LG stuff they're (hopefully) putting into the official one. That's why it's smart to wait a bit more.
Hopefully it will fix most or all the problems.

Yes, that's the case. The leak has issues (which makes sense, it's not a finished build), and almost all Gingerbread mods are based on the leak so they have the same issues. I know CM7 is using the Gingerbread source instead and has fixed a lot of the issues, but not all of them.
The official update is not only going to be completely stable (hopefully) but will come bundled with better drivers/kernel support which will fix most of the common issues with the phone (hopefully).
I've gone through an Over The Air update to Android before, and if it's like what I experienced, you're going to get a pop-up that asks if you want to update now or later. Choose later if you want to keep root, someone here will have the official build rooted probably within the hour but definitely within the first couple of days.
In the mean time though, don't be scared of trying out one of the ROMs that are available. I swear by CM7, but I've heard wonderful things about EagleBlood and Ultimate too.

I have heard that official updating the rooted phone could actually brick it? And when a mod is nightly version, does it mean it it not completely stable? I am interested in CM7, but I could not find a stable version on their site.
Thanks!
i have question also since it's related to thread title. i'm running stock right now but rooted. once i update to gingerbread cm7, will i have to install all apps and settings all over? and will call log and stuff like that disappear also?

You should be able to get all of that stuff after startup my hitting the square boxes in the initial setup. Worked for me yesterday with the Eagleblood 2.3.4 ROM, when someone recommended it to me rather than Titaniumbackup which screwed up my phone a lot because I went from Froyo to GB

When I did an OTA update, it kept all of my apps and settings. I can't remember if it preserved call log.

I don't know if it will brick or not, my OTA was not rooted. And CM7 nightlies are NOT completely stable, but they're on build 58 by now and the ROM works perfectly fine. The only issue I can see with the phone is the top bar they added to the notifications menu that has toggle-able settings like WIFI, GPS, etc sometimes doesn't show up and in the camera, it calls both cameras "back" instead of one being "front".
But if you're concerned with stability that much, use the leak or EagleBlood.

Okay so I know I'm a newbie but... Can anyone tell me how to get Flash on my At&t Captivate? I know 2.2 has been released and but apparently I need a step by step guide even though I've been doing this for a long time (maybe I'm suffering from altzhiemers).
Search the app market for "flash 10.1". Install.
You need to have android 2.2 for Captivate. Then search "Flash Player" on the Android Market. I don't recall if the app is pre-installed on the 2.2 Captivate.
Good luck. Click on that link... I wrote up that guide... it's fairly easy to follow. Just remember to take it step by step and follow each one exactly. Download mode, have odin open, then plug in, and flash away!
Flash player requires Android 2.2 which hasn't been released for Captivate yet.

you know, its the cool thing to be against the FroYo movement....

Same here..
Also, OP, I've found the absolute easiest way to get FroYo/root/lagfix-all in one is with Cognitions Odin thing. It flashes the latest version of Cognition and take only about five minutes. Extremely simple. Almost as easy as the Odin3 one-click stock recovery thing. And obviously with Android 2.2, you can use install flash from the market and use it to your heart's content
JI6 leaked Foryo bugs are well doucmented in a dedicated thread. You probably rarely use your phone if you don't encounter any bugs.
Yes, I'm aware there are ways to work around some bugs (like replace the email client with the older email client) but that doesn't mean the ROM has no bugs. And my phone still need reboot at least twice a week to make it funtion correctly. Otherwise, the phone just slows and lags and some menus just show random stuff.
Even Samsung has to pull its *official* JP6/JPM release in Europe to fix the various issues.

so why not use a rom based on it that a kind dev has already tweaked for us?
not use my phone much??? LMFAO!
its my work phone (email and cell), personal phone (email and cell), gps (yes mine works), handheld game device, and toy.....
yeah, thats not using it at all....
most of the roms out there based on the leaked froyos are very stable and good enough for daily use.
You lost me there, bro. What the buggy Froyo leak from AT&T has anything to do with custom ROMs? I'm not anti-Froyo. Just stating the fact that current leaked beta ROM from Samsung is very buggy.
I said the leak Froyo ROM is buggy. And you said it is not because you're running a custom ROM ?? WTF? It's like saying I'm running a Nexus One with Froyo w/o problem hence there should never be buggy Froyo out there for any phone.

LOL....and i said that the 'bugs' can easily be remedied by looking around on the forums. the custom rom came into play because all the tweaks have already been done for you and do not require you to apply anything special to rid the 'bugs'.
honestly, the bugs that are being claimed are very minute, and dont warrant a blanket statement like, 'Stay away from Froyo for our phones!!!111 its evil!!!111'

I deem this thread closed
Do any stock Froyo or Gingerbread ROMS exist for the Captivate? I see all of these aftermarket ROMS posted but I don't like all the themes or added programs they come with. I just want a stock ROM.
There is AT&T stock 2.2 and Rogers stock 2.2 depending on which Captivate you have.
2.3 has not been released for the Galaxy S. It was leaked for the i9000, but that ROM isn't working yet. The only real 2.3 ROM for the Captivate is CM7 which is not yet stable.

Seriously? If you want a stock ROM then just use the one available from your carrier. Cognition 4 is as close as a custom ROM can be to stock, but minus the bloatware and it has some minor performance tweaks. This place isn't in the business of creating "stock" ROMs.
For stock like feel, i'd recommend one of two roms. Andromeda 1.2 (unthemed) or Cog 4.1. Andro is based off of the Armani Captivate 2.2 and the devs did a fantastic job of making it somewhat minimal and still has all the goodies. They also added a few other nice touches. Cog is based off of official ATT 2.2 with the bloatware gone and lagfix installed. It is also very nice but didn't hold my attention the way Andro does. As was already mentioned CM7 is ok for people that know how to trouble shoot their phones and can deal with the bugs. It's NOT meant for people new to their phones and flashing.

So, it's impossible to get a stock rom easily?

The update came from Samsung and not ATT. The easiest way to get a "stock rom" is to use keis to do the update. Yes it will come with all the bloat from ATT. If you dont want the bloat then there are ways to remove them, gone over many times in the forum which you would have found had you done a search.
As for Stock Gingerbread roms, well to be honest we will most likely not see an ATT stock gingerbread as the 2.2 update is most likely the only one we will get through official channels

Indeed.
I know our Infuses could run ICS. Hell, my Nexus S runs it beautifully. It's just a matter of the right libs. I think the hardware is more than sufficient.
im curious to see how the hard key/soft key issue is going to be worked out. Also since ive been using GoLauncher to get rid of my status bar, it will be interesting to see how the new menu button works.

Well the custom ROMs to come out so far for the Nexus S have either left them in (which some people prefer) or taken them out. The hard buttons would obviously still need to work (they do on the Nexus S) so you'd just get a bit more real estate at the bottom of the screen. Rumor has it that the official ICS update for the NS will not have the software buttons but as it hasn't been officially released yet, nobody knows for sure. It's a good bet though.

I wouldnt doubt it. It would seem redundant to leave them in. Hopefully google is really making an effort at unification with ICS. It would be awesome to not have a fragmented app store and dev.
My 2 Cent's
There is no question that the Infuse is capable of running ICS, other lesser devices are running it. I have a mostly stable beta running on my Inspire that has very similar hardware specs. (slower processor clock too 1ghz vs 1.2ghz) it really boils down to the correct drivers & libs/kernel I think ICS would be awesome on the Infuse.
Cheers

I am opening this thread to discuss the new official release from AT&T and Samsung. Details can be found here.
I'm not sure why discussion rooting was a reason to close a thread, but I guess a overzealous mod is better than no mod.
I hate to burst your bubble but there's already an active thread about the official AT&T Gingerbread release.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437947
I am not sure how much needs to be discussed. It is the same rom that was leaked back in 11/16/2011. Developers have done some amazing stuff with the Rom so far. All that is left for them to do really is add BLN and voodoo color to the kernel. I am not sure if having the source will do anything more for the Rom themselves.
FYI - Mod don't like ppl reopening closed threads.
yes I was active on that thread. It was locked by a mod because people started to discuss how to root the new release. zergRush does not work on it.

I also had Tethering manage FC on me, but only right after I flashed it on the first reboot. I have not seen it FC again. I am very familiar with the Fugu kernel swap and think it great method, but my issue that I don't have a source of the kies released KK4 kernel. Do you know how to gernerate or extract an ODIN flashable kernel from the running image?
I'm running Cyanogenmod kang build 7.2 right now but I gotta ask is it worth going to stock gingerbread? How stable is it? I'll be honest I miss some of the touchwiz apps, but IMO the stock froyo rom sucked. At the very least I'd probably root and remove the AT&T BS, but IMO The froyo rom ran slower and buggier than the stock eclair rom! I really just want everyone's general opinion of it. Its a tough call. I got my phone running pretty stable with Cyanogenmod right now and its out of warrenty anyway so it might not even be worth my time anyway.

I am very familiar with the Fugu kernel swap and think it great method, but my issue that I don't have a source of the kies released KK4 kernel. Do you know how to gernerate or extract an ODIN flashable kernel from the running image?

Check the KK4 leak thread for the tar.
No one has confirmed that the KK4 leak is exactly the same of the offical KK4. That is my only hesitation. I would like to be sure that I am running the AT&T KK4 release

Well the camera is a heck of a lot better the AOSP. It's worth it, even though it's still RFS, it's snappy and way better the KB1 ever was.
Yeah speaking of rfs I'd definitely be putting a lag fix on. I might look into it, and yes I agree about the camera, in fact honestly the hate against touchwiz is unwarranted. All the touchwiz apps are better, even the launcher is better than vanilla android one(not counting cyanogenmod that uses adw, which is one if the best). Only thing I did notice is without touchwiz the rom is faster, so obviously it adds bulk but the apps are so much better!

I never did get slacker radio and maps working at the same time on kk4. Even with tweaks I mentioned in another thread, slacker started dying after about a day of use. No problems like that with cm7. Thats why I am mostly interested if they actually made any changes from the leak. I doubt it though.
Ginger Bread is here
Im updating currently to official ginger bread
Didn't you notice that Samsung & at&t dropped lots of original Gingerbread features? like the CRT screen-off animation... I can't find it on the new official GB update one.
Is CarrierIQ still present in the official build? Curious. It was in the leak.

I got this phone recently and I'm experiencing some minor bugs and was wondering if it's worth it loading a custom mod to it.
It's currently running GB 2.3.3 stock
I have no experience at all doing anything regarding custom roms or kernels or whatever. Before I do anything with my phone I want to know the ups and downs to it and if it's worth it
The bugs I currently have are random reboots but this has only happened twice in about 5 days of use wifi calling sometimes gets a little *****y but it works (for this I had to get a older sim card TM 9073)
Is there a stable rom around that most g2x users are using ?

I don't mind Gb or ICS though I believe Gb would be the most stable
I only want my phone to be the most stable as possible with all it's features staying with 2.3.3+ I do a lot of gaming and run game emulators on it

Well if there was someone experienced kind enough to help me out through this process I would appreciate it a lot since I have no experience at all regarding this.
I do wish to know if there is a way to revert my G2X to its factory settings on the 2.3.3 in case I mess up etc
so.. everywhere I read says do this do that flash this and that... I can;t find anything detailed enough for someone who doesn't know what nvflash is or what it does or how to use rom manager etc
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060715
specifies 2.2.2 I have 2.3.3 where am I suposed to start just flash and if so how?
I'm a complete noob on the android platform I need more details than just use this and that.
sorry for the noobness but I just want to get the hang of this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUT5JcnJHgk
Links are in the YouTuber's description... after that search for those 2.3.3 threads and pick one!
follow the steps in this link... to flash the latest CM Rom...
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/LG_G2x:_Full_Update_Guide
But i would recommend using a different method to root,
since you said you have never done any of this before
there are noob friendly ways to root such as the following link...
follow the directions in this link to root..
then just continue on the original CM link and start after the root section..
root here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039985
This phone is probaly one of the easiest phones to root and install cwm on, its 99.9% unbrickable and has tons of information in dev thread. Just take the time to read b4 you do anything, simple as that.

thanks to all , the links where helpful I got the cyanogen RC 7.2 working good so far only 1 issue when I want to install the telenav gps says its not available in my country I really need this thing working . Apart from that It's a lot easier than I thought now just need to figure the gps thing out.
What country are you trying TeleNav in? And does google maps not work for you?
I agree. I'd usually use Google Maps Navigation. Has helped me quite nicely.
I already got it fixed apparently it was a corrupted rom. re downloaded and re installed and everything working nicely atm testing Hellfire phoenix this thing is awesome
