A smartphone with GOOD camera?

Hi!
I'm really fed up with my crappy HTC Kaiser. It has slow processor, but mainly the camera s***s a big time!
Therefore I'd like to buy a new phone with there specs:
- Good, fast camera usable indoors, flash, MPs do not matter - 2Mpix is OK (Sliding camera cover is a plus.)
- Resistive screen as I want to have an (the?) option to use stylus.
- QWERTY keyboard.
- Probably Windows Mobile as I don't know Symbian and it seems WM is more customizable than Symbian, which I like.
- Fast processor.
So far I threw all HTCs out (crappy cameras), X2 (weak processor, expensive)... that leaves me with Samsung B7610, right? But it lack an info LED (doesn't it?) and its indoors shooting is mediocre at least (so I had heard).
So far the best mobile camera seems to be Sony Ericsson K750i (Cyber-Shot).
Any ideas? N97, Vivaz Pro look nice, but they are Symbian.
Want to use the phone as my organizer and eBook reader, not for chatting on Facebook.

And to be honest, I wouldn't buy any Windows Mobile device now, cause WM6.5 is doomed. That means, no developer support etc. (who wants to develop an application for a dying platform?).
Android is the best choice at the moment, IMO.

But I friend of mine promised me to lend me Samsung Spica so I can check Android.
Also Satio should find its way into my hand - that's for its camera and Symbian testing.

There simply aren't any Windows Mobile phones with a good camera. The HD2 is less bad than some, but it's lightyears behind some of the better Symbian devices. The SE Satio is an obvious possibility, or Samsung i8910 HD if you're more interested in video than still pictures. Or you could pick up an old LG Renoir second hand (although whether that really counts as a smartphone is debatable).

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S vs HTC Desire

I'm going to buy a new phone very soon, and have some difficulties in choosing the perfect phone..
After a lot of thinking and reading I've come to a conclusion that it will either be the Samsung Galaxy S or the HTC Desire.
Samsung Galaxy S has overall exceedingly better hardware (GPU,CPU,Camera) than the HTC Desire, but the software, TouchWiz 3.0 looks like **** (iOS copy). Therefore I'm also thinking of buying HTC Desire since HTC Sense looks brilliant.
I want Galaxy S because of the amazing screen and the FLAC support which is quite important to me as I have the Monster Turbine Gold Pro headphones, and I don't want to waste them on bad audio quality. The HTC Desire as I said earlier has HTC Sense which is an extremely attractive UI, but then again it lacks the ability to play FLAC files and the screen is supposedly useless in direct sunlight.
Galaxy also lacks flash, but I could live without it as Galaxy's camera is better than Desire's.
Is the audio quality on the Galaxy S a lot better than the Desire, or is the FLAC support just there for advertisement, does it actually play FLAC in the quality it should be played?
HTC Desire from my understanding has already gotten Froyo while Galaxy has to wait till the end of September, is this true?
Is there any possibility that Galaxy S will get ROM for HTC Sense?
Which Phone is the better one and why?

I would choose Desire as it´s HTC build and has Sense

The Galaxy S has a 4" screen with a the faster hummingbird processor. Front facing camera.
I'd choose the Galaxy S.

Major hardware specs are probably agreed to be better for the Galaxy S over the Desire (i.e. cpu, gpu functionality, ram, screen) - that's something you can't change.
Externally, the Desire hardware design is nicer (subjective) - but that's something that a skin or case can change.
If you need a flash then that may be an important factor to you. The Samsung has had issues with gps (although that may be fixed now) and some lag (although all potentially suffer from that - may also be something that'll be fixed in firmware updates) - these are also mostly subjective though.
Desire has 2.2 already, Samsung has committed to bringing it to the Galaxy so that's hopefully a moot issue.
HTC do turn out phones rather quick so their current top may not be there for long - Samsung don't push that many out so their current champ *may* be so for longer and *may* get longer support...
Both are ultimately great. Software is software so you shouldn't really go on that - interfaces can be changed. Go with what you feel and what you can get the best overall deal on - I doubt neither would leave you wishing you had got the other.

Music quality
I'm leaning towards the Galaxy S.
Still not sure, only remaining factor would be whether the music quality on the Galaxy S is actually better than on the Desire.
Anybody tried to play music on both with good headphones?

I'm also about to get a new phone and my choices were basically between those two. I'm not enthralled by the fact that both have PenTile screens (which makes text less sharp, as they don't have the full complement of subpixels) but there's not really anything else in the UK at their level, and the Galaxy S' screen is both bigger and unambiguously better, particularly in sunlight. The Galaxy S also has a much better multi-touch digitiser - the Desire has the same one as the Nexus One, which only supports two points of contact and gets easily confused.
The Galaxy S also has a slightly better CPU and a much better GPU, and more built-in storage (though that's not very important), while the Desire has more RAM and a camera flash but is otherwise outclassed hardware-wise. But the Desire is more polished software-wise, with HTC Sense and without the lag and GPS issues of the Galaxy S - but it's early days and Samsung are clearly working hard on firmware so hopefully these will be fixed, and there's workarounds for the lag. The Desire also has the advantage that developers around here are more familiar with HTC devices, but there's work on porting CyanogenMod to the Galaxy S which suggests that developers are taking it seriously.
I'm going to go with the Galaxy S because of its hardware advantages - software can be changed but hardware can't etc. TouchWiz 3 gets mixed reviews, but it's always possible to just use something like Launcher Pro instead, that being the advantage of having an open OS!
Afraid I can't comment on the audio performance of the phones though.

audio and video are both excellent in the galaxy s (vibrant here)... I got one force close on touchwiz... it was day one and I was putting my phone under as much stress as I could... its the only one so far...
My quadrant score is between 1400 and 1500, linpack is between 8.3 and 8.5
--this blows all htc devices with the same software away...--
My phone gets 55+ fps on neocore and finishes the benchmark ten seconds quicker than a desire..
with all the different versions coming out and the developer support I see growing galaxy s hands down
(I have also owned or tested nearly every htc gsm android device... minus the aria, and desire.. )

As a current Vibrant owner I was unsure whether to wait it out for the rumored HTC handsets coming to TMO. I'm glad I didn't, the screen is unbelievable, the processor is lightning fast, and the dedicated gpu makes gaming an experience. In other words pick up the phone use a home replacement app, and you'll be good to go.

Galaxy S has froyo now leaked but all working

I think I'll go for the Samsung Galaxy S.
As a lot of you have said already the software can always be changed, hardware on the other hand, cannot.
I still want to know, just out of curiosity, if the Galaxy S' sound quality is actually better than Desire's?
If the sound quality is noticeably better on the Galaxy S' I'll 100% go for it, if not, I'll most likely go for it anyway.
Seems like almost nobody actually tried the music on both.

From the reviews I read people said sound was definitely better then the Desire...

According to that GSMArena review it has a flatter frequency response curve than the Desire, lower noise levels and higher dynamic range.
I don't have personal experience of it though, so I can't vouch for how it sounds myself.

My partner received her galaxy last week, within 3 days she had returned it for the Desire. and is completely satisfied, as am I, that she made the correct choice.
Don’t get me wrong, the Galaxy was a nice phone. but it was very light and plasticy which was a major turn off for us. Plus the audio quality was no where near as good as the Desire.
on paper the Galaxy may have better hardware performance, but let me tell, actually using both devices you don’t notice anything different, other than the Desire feels like its built properly.

dont know, the galaxy S should be faster and better than the desire... but i tried it at the store, hell, it has loading times wtf Oo some friends got desires.. they never really need to load long..
i think thats cause the touchwiz **** from samsung.. if there would be a possibility to flash a stock froyo rom (probably there is already one), that phone would be awsome, but ONLY THEN.
but i have to say.. i love the screen. its smaller then the one from my hd2.. but still big. for me its the almost perfect size of screen. probably 4.1" would be better, but 4" is enough, i lile it. + the super amoled screen is really fantastic
the only thing why the galaxy s is crappy is the software.. if someone gets that fixes, its the best android for my opinion^.^
EDIT: btw, for me the desire screen is just too small i could NEVER enjoy surfing with that...

That does sound kinda weird, as GSMarena did say that the audio quality was amazing. There is a fix for getting the phone to sound good through headphones, and BTW, what kind of headphones did you use?

Sony bud earphhones. the sound isss both better in ear and via speaker

Short comment from me as i do have both of them in my hand for a while already.
What Desire have in advance:
- flash light
- much better mail client, support for meeting requests (create, accept, etc..)
- much easier switch of USB mode
- much better phone dial pad with really working search
- more widgets
- search in exchange global address list from peoples list (everywhere), displays even phone numbers not just email
- really good sw keyboard
What Galaxy S have in advance:
- better camera, picture is actually more crisper and more real colors
- much better display, with more precise multi-touch
- better battery live (lifetime was about 135% of Desire in my case, same usage)
- better sound from build is speaker (good for in-car instructions or as "radio")
- can play almost every audio/video format without noticeable lacking
- 3d accelerator, much higher FPS for 3d games
- 2 gigs ROM = more applications can be installed, good especially for games as games can be big
(i now froyo allows you to move it to SD card, but no app supports it so far)
- and have more sexy design!
My conclusion:
If you are sort of corporate user, with high usage of email and especially Exchange, go for Desire.
If you are multimedia freak or gamer, go for Samsung.

I find some of the software comparisons in this thread a little hard to swallow. There are over 63,000 (over 100,000 including paid) FREE apps/widgets/keyboards/games/FLAC that can be downloaded and installed without needing any form of root or warranty voiding modification.
The sound comparison may be the only issue. However, most of the sound problem is resolved by using lossless compression: FLAC, WMA, or otherwise (an app supporting various formats can be downloading for either device!). I have yet to notice a different between a qualcomm cpu's audio processing or a samsung cpu's audio processing - when using the same headphones, and same audio file. I mean... really???

I'm getting quite confused.
Some say that the Desire's sound quality is better, some Galaxy S' is better.
Which one of these two statements are actually true? Some even say that the sound quality is the same...
Looking at the poll it looks like most people think that the Galaxy S is better, so if to just go by the poll the Galaxy S would win, but well, democracy isn't always correct.
BTW nightswim, nice post, very detailed and nice to hear from someone who owns both. Would you say that the sound quality on both phones are the same? Since you said, and I'm quoting "better sound from build is speaker" (I assume that u meant "built in"), would that mean that the sound quality is only better on the Galaxy S when listening through the built in speakers?
Bottom line: Galaxy S is overall definitely the hardware king and Desire the software king , but still extremely confused about the sound quality.

I think the best windows phone always depends on your personal needs. I choose a HTC 7 Pro, because I needed a device with a physical keyboard, as I'm often using the office app and the email functionality.
So I bought it directly when it came out and I'm still very pleased with my descision. As there was only the Dell Venue Pro with a keyboard on sale, I choose HTC, because I had allready several phones produced by them and I loved all of them. The only thing I miss is a microSD reader.

The 7 Pro would be the best if it has a larger screen and better landscape support :/

Wtf where is the LG quantum?

The Omnia7 is a great piece of HW for that price. I just also cant live without physical KB and got the HTC 7 Pro.
Why i decided the HTC over the Dell is that Dell is pretty bulky and also note that dells keyboard does not have directional keys. When i had the Omnia 7 it was a pita when trying to go back to some specific place in a text...
As for the not so good support of landscape in WP7 its not a problem. The places where I use the KB most landscape works... Like now writing this!

Also unlocked bootloaders is a thing that made me go towards HTC.

Another problem of the Pro ia that it has only 8GB in the Europe version -.-

I love my HD7, but I love big screens. I use my phone 24/7, literally, it monitors my sleep lol... The battery isn't as good as some of the smaller screens, and HTC batteries suck, but you need to get a phone that suits your preferences.

HTC has problems with quality these past few years.. Not jst on wp7/wm6, bt android too..
I'll go for LG.. Easiest way to developer unlock via its mfg menu..

I don't actually own an Windows Phone, but I'll swap my LG 2X to a DVP. I think, that's the best Windows Phone, it has an 4.1" AMOLED Screen, a physical keyboard, it's cool looking...
But the Omnia 7 is really good too. Super AMOLED is quite better than AMOLED, and it has an metal body... thats nice

Hands down the dell venue pro. I own all of them but for battery life, functionality, quality, and pretty much everything that matters the dell venue pro. It was ergonomically designed in every sense to be form-fitted to the hand, the screen has a slight curvature unseen elsewhere, its the only windows phone without physical buttons that I dont accidentally hit the back button on, and lets face it, no other looks near as cool. The weight took some getting used to, its just slightly heavier than the hd7 but the weight is my only complaint.

The battery on the HD7 sucks, yes, but that's the least of its problems.
My main issue is that it's a terrible PHONE. The reception/signal strength is terrible.
If you're on WiFI a lot and want a bit screen, it's a great phone. WiFi will save some battey over a 3G connection given the quality of the radio in the phone.
If you want a phone that actually functions very well as a phone, I'd look into something else. Maybe the Focus. Samsung phones tend to have very good signal strength. At least my Vibrant does, but it may have a different radio /shrug. The HD2 had poor reception as well. The HD7 is basically it's fraternal twin brother.
Also, I'd try my best to get an unlocked/unbranded phone because Microsoft is making us do the carrier dance, Sadly.

Good signal strength (I get 3G+ reception up in the mountains of Burbank, CA & Burbank refuses to allow cell provider to put up new towers)
Nice build quality, feels nice in the hand
Kick Stand for media viewing
Hackability (Same goes for all HTC's as we have R/HSPL)
Cons:
Battery
Poor speaker volume/quality
LCD is nice but nothing compared to Super AMOLED & SAMOLED+
Some complain about the hardware buttons, personally I like them
The capacitive buttons are too close to the LCD (prone to accidently hitting one while holding the device)

I owned the HTC HD7, the HTC Mozart, the LG Optimus 7 and the Omnia 7. So I think I can give a fair point of view.
In my opinion:
* the best is LG Optimus 7:
Pros:
16GB storage, nice battery life, DLNA, great augmented reality apps, speech to text, physical buttons (I hate capacitive buttons)
cons:
Ugly design, too much plastic, heavy weight, mediocre screen and camera, bad image of LG
* Followed by HTC Mozart:
Pros:
Very well balanced phone, HTC apps, aluminium body, 8MP camera, battery life is ok, speakers are of good quality.
cons:
8GB storage only, no HTC flashlight, no DLNA, screen a little bit small.
* Followed by Omnia 7:
Pros:
Wonderful elegant design, great S-Amoled screen
cons:
8GB storage only (at least in my country), very limited number of Samsung apps, no DLNA, a lot of annoying bugs that ruin the overall experience.
* In my opinion the HD7 is the worst.
Pros:
Screen size, kick stand, HTC apps, good call quality
cons:
Terrible screen resolution, horrible battery life, boring design, no DLNA, mediocre camera, mediocre 8GB storage only, terrible speakers (my God)...
I was surprised to discover that I really enjoy using the HTC Mozart and finally hated the HD7 (even if my previous phone was a HD2).
At first sight I fell in love with the Omnia 7 but was finally disappointing on a daily basis...

I have the Omnia 7 and all I can say is that it has terrible call quality and reception-issues.
Otherwise I love it.
By the looks of things there are no good WP7 phones available.
Lets hope Nokia can set things straight.

This is true unfortunately...
Our WP7 devices are really underpowered, with poor storage.
MS shall really increase the minimum specifications now.

I think, only Android and Bada/WM6 really needs dual core, 1GB RAM and some more, because the software isn't really good adapted on the devices.
On WP7, it is.
So for WP7-devices is a 1 year old Snapdragon enough - because they all have the same and Microsoft can easily adapt their OS on the hardware, and everything is running smooth.
On Android, it looks like the devices are requiring an Tegra2 or Exynos to run as good as WP7-devices.
Waste of power, just my opinion. Or do you want to tell your friends, how many cores your phone got?
Lower hardware specs make the devices much cheaper, you can see it on the Omnia7. Only 199€ in Europe.
But with the storage-thing I agree with you. It is really annoying, to have to buy a new phone if the storage is full and you want to save more music and apps on it, otherwise you only need to buy a new SD card...

also i don't suffer from poor call quality, its crystal clear.
the only things i don't like about it
1. battery life could be better (its 50%) of how long my iphone 4 battery could last
2. not very ergonomic, don't understand the fascination of big phones that need 2 hands to compose a message

That's a shame.
Regarding call quality, I suppose I have been unlucky with my device in particular. Accrdingly I will modify my previous comment in order to give the most objective and fair review possible.

[Q] New phone

Hey there!
I've been thinking about getting a new phone during my time at telemarketing (can get them with a decent deal), but can't really decide which one should I choose. At the moment I have HTC Desire HD and I've had it for little over a year now.
I'm down to 3 different phones: Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X or Nokia Lumia 900. I can get GS3 and Lumia through the telemarketing, but for One X I would have to get it from somewhere else.
GS3 and One X would be awesome choices as they are pretty new models in the market (although, Lumia 900 isn't that old either) and I'm already familiar with the Android OS. I also like that they have a Quad-core processors and the screens are amazing too. But Lumia would be an interesting choice too as I like how fluid the whole OS works. It also has couple other standard features I really like, such as the Nokia Radio-mix or whatever it is called. The build of Lumia feels really sturdy, too.
And what I look from a phone is pretty much that it would look nice, work smoothly and could be customized to at least some extent, even the small customization of Lumia with the 7.8 update is enough for me. Oh and, music is one of the more important factors for me too (GS3 still being the best choice for this with the FLAC support).
So, if you have any suggestions, please tell me! But I must say that I have time until Saturday 30th 15:59CET, because that's my last day in the job.
And please share your own experiences and thoughts of the phones too!

Whatever you do DO NOT get the Lumia 900, they will fall in value very soon as it will not get Windows 8 making them redundant with 7.8. Get it if you plan to stick with the Version 7 of windows OS but future wise it'll be a dead beat.
I've had both the HOX and SGS3 and both are fantastic phones.
If you need expandable storage and a removable battery then get the SGS3 if you don't the HOX is a great alternative. It's screen is lovely, camera is better in my eyes, it looks better, and HTC is good with software updates.
The SGS3 has the better audio via headphones if that is of any significance, records better videos but sound not all that, the screen displays deeper blacks compared to the HOX and better contrasts but images appear over saturated compared to the more natural looking images on the SLCD2 on the HOX.
You'll be happy with either.

I currently have a Nexus One, and though it served me for about 3 years, I am kinda unpleased by the minor hardware problems it has, such as the screwed-up multitouch, misplaced capacitive buttons sensors, limited WiFi speed (b/g), no front-facing camera, low memory space etc. I am not a "high-end freak" so I don't need a dual-core or higher device. That's why I'm considering the Nexus S, since it fixes all the problems mentioned above and it has Android 4.2.2 which is more than enough for me. However, my attention is also drawn to the Windows Phone 7 devices. I kinda like "standing out from the ordinary" since most people (well... all, to be honest) have either Androids or iPhones, so having a WP7 might be an interesting experience, given the phones also have good specs (for me). The LG Optimus 7 is too poor-looking: hardware navigational buttons, no front-facing camera, plastic, etc. so it is out of question. The Omnia 7 seems quite good, having a 4" S-AMOLED screen and all the extras found on the Nexus S. The Nokia Lumia phones also seem to be good.
My main use of a smartphone is multimedia: Facebook, Yahoo Messenger, photos, video- and audio-chats, videos, songs and so on. You could easily go either way. If the OS doesn't matter much, then look around and see which one you like better. WP7 devices don't need high end specs to perform better, since the OS is much lighter and less demanding than Android. Android devices benefit greatly from spec increases.
Neither one is really a "better" choice overall for everyone. It's all dependent on your personal tastes. It sounds to me like you're looking to try something different and stand out more, so a Nokia Lumia in one of the colored models might be just what you're looking for. Lumia 800 and 900 models are selling for decent prices now. A bit more than a Nexus S, but worth it for "standing out" in a crowd.
