Hi all,
I was hoping to upgrade to Diamond when its out in the UK. But now the Samsung Omnia is out, I am a bit confused as to which one to go for. I invite everyone to give your opinion on it. I am sure there are many like me out there.
MY initial views are;
Diamond is a cool phone and the HTC have years of experience with WM phones. But it does have its own flows like HTC doesnt seem to know how to make proper camera and issues with video drivers. And their headphones are good for nothing. I really think these areas will be better with Omnia, at least the 5MP camera and the headphone quality.
On the other side, Omnia is slightly bigger and and heavier than the Diamond. And the display is Qvga? (I am not an expert on this). Both have GPS and Accelerometer and stuff.
So guys give us your opinion on this.
Cheers
Jugulator
I'm desperatly trying to source my Omnia from Asia as its not out here in the UK yet. I currently have a G900 and whilst the screen is spanking, its camera is rubbish and it doesn't have GPS, which i REALLY want.
As for HTC, having had 3 HTC devices and having had to return said devices 6 times in total for hardware repairs I will never, ever, ever buy a HTC device again. Oh and just to add, the guy that sits oposite me in the office has an orange branded TyTN, i mentioned the build quality to him about 6 months ago and he laughed at me and said his worked perfectly. Guess what, he finaly threw the thing in the bin today as the last of the front hardware keys gave up on him.
So, don't care if HTC make the greatest phone on the planet, i ain't buying it.
I like the specs of the Omni, but the UI does not appear up to par on the whole compared to that of the Diamond/Rafael.

Thanks for the video. Interesting GUI. I definately like the design of the Omnia. The GUI looks a little bit slugglish and unresponsive at times. But with a large screen (although low pixel dimension), 5MP camera & 16GB max storage--it's hard to say no. The widescreen QVGA is disturbing for a feature rich phone like this. The iPhone hides the pixel dimensions nicely so I'm hoping this one will too.
I'm passing on the Diamond (because of the 4GB max storage) and hoping for the Touch Pro. If you can port TouchFlo 3D on the Omnia and have it be as fluid as the iPhone UI, I would seriously buy it.
VGA and QVGA
Could someone shred some light on the difference between VGA and QVGA? If this is significantly different, I would favour Diamond than Omnia, plus smaller size and weight. But at the same time I would like to try something other than HTC..lol.
Get the Rapheal it will be better than both the Omnia and Diamond.
This Omni phones got my eye, will add it to the review list on the Formal '08 smart phone comparison. Check my signature.
Hmmm touch choice, X1, Pro, or Omnia. Depends on the Camera I get really, no camer -> probably omnia, Good camera-> one of the others. 5MP is sick, and considering HTC Cameras are ****, it makes the 5 even better.
Rory
Go for the Omnia. If you look at the videos from youtube, the omnia opens apps REALLY FAST. It may not be as responsive as we should want, probably due to the screen, but the processor speed makes up for it. Not to mention the 16 GB storage and micro SD slot. It has XVID and DIVX support out of the box, so you know it will definitely perform well with videos. The 5 MP camera also s a huge plus. The only drawbacks I could think off is how good will the battery last in a day of use, and the wide QVGA screen which might not be compatible with most or all available apps yet.
I had a dilemma choosing between the Advantage X7510 and the Omnia, but in the end, I opted for the BIG SCREEN and good battery life of the X7510.
But with the choices you have given, go for the Omnia.

VGA is 640 by 480 screen resolution while QVGA is 320 by 240 resolution. Basically VGA screen have 4 times as much clarity and quality as QVGA screens, in theory atleast.
I too am thinking of the SGH-i907. I will be moving and need to switch to GSM and sense the i907 is going to AT&T that will work just fine for me. But I will have to use it in Verizon/AllHell network until I move. So I hope it will work ok. I think with the 8 or 16GB internal memory and the availability to use the external micro SD slot is nice. I guess to top it off they should have used a VGA screen but WGVA isn't too bad is it? What is the mp of the secondary camera? I am also wondering if Android can be ported to the i907?

Anyone know what version of Opera 9.5 the i900 is running?
I'm thinking between HTC Touch Pro and Omnia. If possible want to get both of them to compare. But still worry about omnia regarding below issues:
1. no support on forum such as tweaking, customize and cook rom.
2. where to download the rom update? Samsung will give new rom update to improve their performance or not?
3. inside the package seem not include the stylus and pouch. at samsung webpage indicate that is an optional.
4. how good is Marvell PXA300 series processor? Stable or not? Fast enough or not to handle such a bulky 3d software.
Samsung Omnia (i-900)
I just got the Omnia here in Singapore and so far, its great! You can turn off most of the "fancy" (but not so useful features to me) iPhone like features and you get a great WM6.1 device with 16GB storage (+ I can add another 8GB micro SD). The battery life is good and I can swap batteries if I need to. The camera is 5MP, with flash and the video is good.
For those of you interested, here's a good review of the Omnia:

I just went to a samsung roadshow in singapore yesterday
and i tried out the i900 there.
The lady told me the stylus is included in the package.
however it is nt like normal PDA phones where the stylus can be kept
'in' the phone itself. i900's stylus is hung outside like an accessory.
5 megapixel camera but doesn't seem to take photos like a 5 megapixel camera should. nokia's n95's camera seems better.
anyway, placed an order as the stock ran out by the time i got there.
How much you got it in Sing Dollar?

Thanks for posting the review! I really like it. The only deal breaker now is the $1000+ (US dollars?) price tag. With the falling value of the US Dollar, that's a hefty price to pay for a phone (those included features are great). 2 year contract for $500? I hope. But there's still the Touch Pro.

After using my G900 (800 x 480) mobile for a year now, I can't say that High res screens float my boat. They are a massive drain on the battery and factoring in the physical size of the screen, really not that usefull in my opinion. Its seems to me like having a 1080p 32" tv, good in principle but unless its 46", you really don't see the full benefit.
I think i'm still looking at an I900 .... now if only they were in the shops in the UK!!!!!
p.s. Anyone from Singapore wana stick one on Ebay?
I'm sure this has been done to death, but I'm so torn between the 2
I need the phone for web browsing, taking pictures, watching videos off the SD card, instant messaging, occasionaly editing document files plus texting&calling.
Screen
Xperia has a 4inch TFT 16M ready display, but is limited by 1.6. The Desire has a 3.7inch AMOLED screen with 16M colours.
I think that I prefer the X10's screen with it's slightly higher resolution and bigger screen (and it's more usable outside from what I have been reading). Lack of multi-touch makes little difference to me.
Camera
X10 has a 8mp camera with an LED flash and records WVGA at 30fps. The Desire has a 5mp camera also with an LED flash, records WVGA at 15fps and is rumored to haave a 720p capture update along the way.
X10's camera is better for my needs. I take more pictures anyway and according to gsmarena, the image quality is quite good
Call Quality
Good on both from what I can tell.
Tie
Handset
Well not much to write here.
I handled the X10 at a 3 store and the Desire at a Telstra store and was a more pleased with the X10. It really is a stunning phone!
Software
The Desire runs sense on Andriod 2.1 while the X10 uses time/media scape on Andriod 1.6. This is where things get complicated for me. From what I can tell (again, just by reading forums), Mediascape is better for multimedia (very important for me). However, the X10 interface seems laggy and no where near as responsive as the Desire. Is this due to to 1.6? Apparently 2.1 supports hardware acceleration which is why it's smoother. Is this correct?
Desire wins for it's smoother interface. However, if 2.1 fixes the lag in the X10, then X10 wins for me.
Hardware
They both use the same CPU, but the Desire has 1.5x more RAM than the X10
Desire easily. However, I don't multitask much, so if that's all that RAM is used for (i.e. it's not causing the slowdown in the UI), then I'm fine with the X10
You have probably guessed by now that I really want the X10. However, I only buy a phone once every 2 years (buying it on contract). So at the end of the day, I want the most future proof phone. Also, the X10's interface is not as smooth as the Desire.
Which one would you recommend for me?
Thanks!
(Also, is there a way to get landscape QWERTY on the X10?)

Firstly, there is no such thing as futureproofing in the cellphone business, period.
It seems that you've got your mind dead-set on getting the X10 already. You've even started justifying and rationalizing the weaknesses of the X10 relative to the Desire.
If you like the phone, get it and live with it for the next 2 years. Don't overthink it, life is way too short to be worried about something as minute in the bigger scheme of things as a cellphone.
Having said that, based on the flops that are both X1 and X2, you're making a mistake. Get the Desire.

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately I'm just a broke uni student, so getting a phone this expensive is a big deal for me. I just don't want to make the wrong choice.
Yes, I do like the X10, but I'm not sure if the better looks and camera justify the weaker hardware (and the older OS). As for the futureproofing thing, I fully understand that no phone is futureproof. I want a phone that is as future proof as possible

You just answered your own question. Do you want a camera in a fancy plastic shell or do you want a normal looking phone with a powerful engine under the hood? =)
What do you think? Prices are unimportant.
It would be nice if you can tell us why
I think the best windows phone always depends on your personal needs. I choose a HTC 7 Pro, because I needed a device with a physical keyboard, as I'm often using the office app and the email functionality.
So I bought it directly when it came out and I'm still very pleased with my descision. As there was only the Dell Venue Pro with a keyboard on sale, I choose HTC, because I had allready several phones produced by them and I loved all of them. The only thing I miss is a microSD reader.
The 7 Pro would be the best if it has a larger screen and better landscape support :/
Wtf where is the LG quantum?
The Omnia7 is a great piece of HW for that price. I just also cant live without physical KB and got the HTC 7 Pro.
Why i decided the HTC over the Dell is that Dell is pretty bulky and also note that dells keyboard does not have directional keys. When i had the Omnia 7 it was a pita when trying to go back to some specific place in a text...
As for the not so good support of landscape in WP7 its not a problem. The places where I use the KB most landscape works... Like now writing this!
Also unlocked bootloaders is a thing that made me go towards HTC.

Sorry, forgotten.
It isnt aviable in Europe, so...
Can any mod apply that phone to the poll?
Another problem of the Pro ia that it has only 8GB in the Europe version -.-
I love my HD7, but I love big screens. I use my phone 24/7, literally, it monitors my sleep lol... The battery isn't as good as some of the smaller screens, and HTC batteries suck, but you need to get a phone that suits your preferences.
HTC has problems with quality these past few years.. Not jst on wp7/wm6, bt android too..
I'll go for LG.. Easiest way to developer unlock via its mfg menu..
Sent from my LG Optimus 7
I don't actually own an Windows Phone, but I'll swap my LG 2X to a DVP. I think, that's the best Windows Phone, it has an 4.1" AMOLED Screen, a physical keyboard, it's cool looking...
But the Omnia 7 is really good too. Super AMOLED is quite better than AMOLED, and it has an metal body... thats nice
Hands down the dell venue pro. I own all of them but for battery life, functionality, quality, and pretty much everything that matters the dell venue pro. It was ergonomically designed in every sense to be form-fitted to the hand, the screen has a slight curvature unseen elsewhere, its the only windows phone without physical buttons that I dont accidentally hit the back button on, and lets face it, no other looks near as cool. The weight took some getting used to, its just slightly heavier than the hd7 but the weight is my only complaint.
The battery on the HD7 sucks, yes, but that's the least of its problems.
My main issue is that it's a terrible PHONE. The reception/signal strength is terrible.
If you're on WiFI a lot and want a bit screen, it's a great phone. WiFi will save some battey over a 3G connection given the quality of the radio in the phone.
If you want a phone that actually functions very well as a phone, I'd look into something else. Maybe the Focus. Samsung phones tend to have very good signal strength. At least my Vibrant does, but it may have a different radio /shrug. The HD2 had poor reception as well. The HD7 is basically it's fraternal twin brother.
Also, I'd try my best to get an unlocked/unbranded phone because Microsoft is making us do the carrier dance, Sadly.
HD7
Pros:
Large screen
Good call quality (Sounds nice & clear)
Good signal strength (I get 3G+ reception up in the mountains of Burbank, CA & Burbank refuses to allow cell provider to put up new towers)
Nice build quality, feels nice in the hand
Kick Stand for media viewing
Hackability (Same goes for all HTC's as we have R/HSPL)
Cons:
Battery
Poor speaker volume/quality
LCD is nice but nothing compared to Super AMOLED & SAMOLED+
Some complain about the hardware buttons, personally I like them
The capacitive buttons are too close to the LCD (prone to accidently hitting one while holding the device)
I owned the HTC HD7, the HTC Mozart, the LG Optimus 7 and the Omnia 7. So I think I can give a fair point of view.
In my opinion:
* the best is LG Optimus 7:
Pros:
16GB storage, nice battery life, DLNA, great augmented reality apps, speech to text, physical buttons (I hate capacitive buttons)
cons:
Ugly design, too much plastic, heavy weight, mediocre screen and camera, bad image of LG
* Followed by HTC Mozart:
Pros:
Very well balanced phone, HTC apps, aluminium body, 8MP camera, battery life is ok, speakers are of good quality.
cons:
8GB storage only, no HTC flashlight, no DLNA, screen a little bit small.
* Followed by Omnia 7:
Pros:
Wonderful elegant design, great S-Amoled screen
cons:
8GB storage only (at least in my country), very limited number of Samsung apps, no DLNA, a lot of annoying bugs that ruin the overall experience.
* In my opinion the HD7 is the worst.
Pros:
Screen size, kick stand, HTC apps, good call quality
cons:
Terrible screen resolution, horrible battery life, boring design, no DLNA, mediocre camera, mediocre 8GB storage only, terrible speakers (my God)...
I was surprised to discover that I really enjoy using the HTC Mozart and finally hated the HD7 (even if my previous phone was a HD2).
At first sight I fell in love with the Omnia 7 but was finally disappointing on a daily basis...
I have the Omnia 7 and all I can say is that it has terrible call quality and reception-issues.
Otherwise I love it.
By the looks of things there are no good WP7 phones available.
Lets hope Nokia can set things straight.

I think, only Android and Bada/WM6 really needs dual core, 1GB RAM and some more, because the software isn't really good adapted on the devices.
On WP7, it is.
So for WP7-devices is a 1 year old Snapdragon enough - because they all have the same and Microsoft can easily adapt their OS on the hardware, and everything is running smooth.
On Android, it looks like the devices are requiring an Tegra2 or Exynos to run as good as WP7-devices.
Waste of power, just my opinion. Or do you want to tell your friends, how many cores your phone got?
Lower hardware specs make the devices much cheaper, you can see it on the Omnia7. Only 199€ in Europe.
But with the storage-thing I agree with you. It is really annoying, to have to buy a new phone if the storage is full and you want to save more music and apps on it, otherwise you only need to buy a new SD card...
Enough OT now

the only things i don't like about it
1. battery life could be better (its 50%) of how long my iphone 4 battery could last
2. not very ergonomic, don't understand the fascination of big phones that need 2 hands to compose a message

Hello SicilianTony,
In my country the Omnia 7 is only available with 8GB unfortunately...
That's a shame.
Regarding call quality, I suppose I have been unlucky with my device in particular. Accrdingly I will modify my previous comment in order to give the most objective and fair review possible.
After a research I made selections for a new purchase.
It will be:
-SE Xperia Neo
or
-Samsung Nexus S
I like both casing shape/design.
Specifications are very similar --> http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3734&idPhone2=3620
Would one of them serve better?
I'd like to hear pros/cons
Importan to me:
-camera/video (Neo +1)
-screen size (Nexus +1)
-price little higher for Neo, but it is also newer model (tie)
-music reproduction (internet radio) (?)
-speed (?)
-stability (?)
I have Nokia N8 now and I feel it as slow phone. Can I expect significant improvement in speed with Neo/Nexus?
p.s. I like both of them having Skype video calling possibility
(alternative: HTC Incredible S, but expensiver)
Nexus S hands down.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
If I'd have had a Nokia N8 I wouldn't have bought the NxS, especially not with the new update for Symbian out.
Thanks for answers!
I like my Nokia N8 very much for the design and very much for the camera,
but speed and reliability is very low. It's killing me for that. Also big reason I want to change is I can't find good internet radio player (and music player). Best I could find is TuneWiki player. But often it doesn't work as it should and it's slow.
At the moment I'm thinking of Xperia Neo, but it costs less than my current phone (N8), so I'm worried if I'll get worse
I don't care about software system. Maybe I'd just like to test android, but also symbian would be good if it worked as it should. (I had WP7 -good system, but there's no suitable phone out yet. Maybe after WP7 Mango)
I don't play with thousands of applications. Just need calls, music player, camera, web-browser, Skype, Navigation, USB Tethering and some little more to work good and fast.
Would Xperia Neo be better than Nokia N8?
iPhone is too expensive and I don't like the style . I'd like to have and wait for Nokia N9 Meego, but it looks like it will be very expensive too.
alternatives:
1.HTC Incredible S (Is it better than Xperia Neo?)
2.Galaxy S II (almost too big size; don't like the design very much; maybe too powerfull phone)
3.HTC Sensation (almost too big size; it heats too much; maybe too powerfull phone)
EDIT
-------
After seeing few pages, I'll maybe wait for Nokia N9
--> http://www.nokiaphones.net/nokia-n9-preview/
--> http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110828071831AAMnSwR
--> http://dailymobile.se/2011/08/26/nokia-n9-ui-demo/
HTC Incredible, if you dont mind paying more for a better product.
Nokia N9 is a great phone, first Nokia device worth buying after N95 8GB. I would like to have one .
Don't know about SE Neo, generally I do't like SE customization of Android, but someone would think different.
Nexus S has a great form factor, not too big, and it's amazing fast with stock Android, feels faster then some HTC devices with more power, like Sensation.
After all, it's just matter of taste. So, you should go to local phone store and check some of them...or wait for N9 ...
I just had allready agreed buying Nexus S second hand today afternoon, but I canceled it.
I'll wait a bit really, maybe for Nokia N9. HTC Incredible S is still option also.
Yesterday I had some troubles with N8 again and it was too impulsive thing buying other phone in a haste.
I was a Nokia fanboy for years until a friend showed my his Android phone. I went straight out and got the HTC Hero, I now have the Nexus S. You really really won't be disappointed if you got one. I wont be going back to Nokia at all, old OS and clunky with it.
I currently have a Nexus One, and though it served me for about 3 years, I am kinda unpleased by the minor hardware problems it has, such as the screwed-up multitouch, misplaced capacitive buttons sensors, limited WiFi speed (b/g), no front-facing camera, low memory space etc. I am not a "high-end freak" so I don't need a dual-core or higher device. That's why I'm considering the Nexus S, since it fixes all the problems mentioned above and it has Android 4.2.2 which is more than enough for me. However, my attention is also drawn to the Windows Phone 7 devices. I kinda like "standing out from the ordinary" since most people (well... all, to be honest) have either Androids or iPhones, so having a WP7 might be an interesting experience, given the phones also have good specs (for me). The LG Optimus 7 is too poor-looking: hardware navigational buttons, no front-facing camera, plastic, etc. so it is out of question. The Omnia 7 seems quite good, having a 4" S-AMOLED screen and all the extras found on the Nexus S. The Nokia Lumia phones also seem to be good.
My main use of a smartphone is multimedia: Facebook, Yahoo Messenger, photos, video- and audio-chats, videos, songs and so on. I don't want GTA3 or N.O.V.A or any other demanding games (that's why I don't need a dual-core). So... do you think the Nexus S is still worth buying today, or should WP7 fulfill my needs better?
Thanks!
You could easily go either way. If the OS doesn't matter much, then look around and see which one you like better. WP7 devices don't need high end specs to perform better, since the OS is much lighter and less demanding than Android. Android devices benefit greatly from spec increases.
Neither one is really a "better" choice overall for everyone. It's all dependent on your personal tastes. It sounds to me like you're looking to try something different and stand out more, so a Nokia Lumia in one of the colored models might be just what you're looking for. Lumia 800 and 900 models are selling for decent prices now. A bit more than a Nexus S, but worth it for "standing out" in a crowd.
