attn1's way is the only way. I suggest you read, reread, and read again the "effen manual". All the information you need is there. The newest version (12.3) is a straight forward "Choose your option and watch it work"

Do what homeslice said. And please read, read, re read, go to bed, get back up the next day and repeat before rooting.

That also works for rooting the Inspire on 2.3.3, its what i used when i installed the RUU of gingerbread and decided to root right after (before the hackkit was updated).
Only time i didnt use the above link is making the goldcard, which i used bubby's guide to make.
I tried attn1's method a few days ago. I have inspire 4g and had 2.3. It worked like a charm! Carefully read the manual!

if you use the Ace_toolkit, are you able to run different ROM's such as CM7? because this is almost exactly what i've been looking for! none of the programming stuff haha
After you run the kit you are rooted, so you can download any rom and use that.
After rootIng my phone I tried alot of different ones and settled on ninjas rom. Others chose other ones.

I just purchased the Inspire 4G. *Love it so far* but I'm heading to the gym soon and before I root and try out CM7 tonight I wanted to OTA update from AT&T. Can I do this now and still safely root the device and put a ROM on it later today?
Yup. There is a multistep process for post-update Inspires. Either run the hack kit and then follow my post in the Dev section, OR use attn1's pd98img.zip (also after running the hack kit) to get root and then the ability to install ClockworkMod Recovery from ROM Manager.

Thanks for the awesome responses. I'll update it now since I'm curious to see how much better it makes it and I'll be using Pandora for the night so wouldnt hurt!
I've run across a three or so Thunderbolt root methods now, and I'm wondering which is the best way to do it now. I'm purchasing my TB this weekend after a long decision making process, so I figured I'd become knowledgeable about the root process before I get it. Thanks!
My vote goes for the manual root method. Helps with understanding what's involved in rooting our phones.
Let's say we already know what's going on with our phone, just need to root on the go.... Then what?

+1 for manual root. As long as you follow the guide to the letter you should have no issues. When I did it, I thought I was having a problem, but then I realized I was trying to repeat a step. Just take your time and you'll be fine.
There is only one root method, however automated versions exist.
Many cases of the automated one failing and causing problems.
+1 manual

+1 to that. There is also an auto root. you have to login to androidcentral.com, but much simpler if that is what you are looking for.
Thunderbolt Auto Root
Perhaps I'll manual root. I'm still on my Droid and I did the SBF root when 2.2 wasn't rooted yet. But I've never rooted in ADB before.
I just set up ADB on my new computer in preparation. Perhaps I'll read the guide in advance. RootzWiki guide the best idea?
What are the complications of the auto root? I'm just curious.
Thanks for this guys! My Bolt is due to arrive next week and this is just the info I was looking for.

Good Point. I couldn't find the thread. Much respect to you jcase.
Autoroot worked just fine for me. I have no idea what problems people are having with it but I suspect they're caused by not reading and following the instructions carefully.
I have the HTC Inspire running stock 2.3.3
I have searched, and tried everything, but nothing is working. I have tried both methods available though ace-hack-kit-v12.3. I have also tried Bubby's one click GUI, as well as simple one click, super one click, and gingerbreak for good measure, and yet nothing seems to work.
ace hack kit works
Ace hack kit doesn't achieve downgrade, it hangs at sending zip file, and then on the alternate root meathod it reboots without downgrading.

If you're using 12.3 and downgrade method two, there is a small typo in the script. There was a new version of the script posted that should get you back in business. You need to just download the new script and put it in the folder where the original was.
The below one worked for me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352
I had the same problem as you allenrb2. I ran the Ace Hack Kit v12.3 and it would just freeze on step 2 when it is trying to install the zip file. To solve this problem, I just went on my other computer and ran the Ace Hack Kit from there. It went just fine no hanging at that zip file in step 2. So maybe doing it on a different computer will work for you, like it did for me.

The best radio is the one that works the best for you. Everyone has different experiences with radios depending on device, ROM, location. Best things to do. One go to the inspire radio thread and read what people have been using and experiment...flash a season and give it a couple days to see how it does then change if need be. OR secondly I would see if my ROM has a separate Q and A thread and go there for suggestions.

Thanks for the help guys, I flashed a radio, so I guess now I just give it a couple days to see if its all gravy now. I appreciate yous guys taking the time to help this noob out.
I recently switched from the Samsung Captivate, and everything seemed a lot easier with that phone.

Months ago I had so many problems rooting my MT4G. Recently, I decided to load the stock rom on my phone, just to root it all over again. I was able to do it in about 3 minutes! Here we go...
The following prerequisites can be found by searching/googling the forums.
1.) need VisionARY r14 .apk file
2.) need MyTouchRootingFiles (zip containing hboot_dhd.nb0, root.sh, and wpx.ko)
3.) download and install Android Terminal Emulator from Android Market
Ok, now that we got that out of the way, here are the instructions.
1.) Install VisionARY to your phone
2.) Unzip the MyTouchRootingFiles file to your computer, then copy the unzipped folder called ROOT to the root of your sdcard using usb cable
3.) While phone is NOT connected to computer, start VisionARY. Press the TEMP ROOT option to gain temporary root access. Exit VisionARY.
4.) Start Terminal Emulator and type the following, hitting enter after each line
SU
CD /SDCARD/ROOT
SH ROOT.SH5.) After rebooting, start VisionARY again, and gain TEMP ROOT once again
6.) Wait a few minutes (this is very important, don't rush), then press ATTEMPT PERM ROOT, your phone will reboot
7.) After rebooting, start Terminal Emulator and simply type SU. If you get the "#", you have rooted your phone!
Now you can explore the Android world by installing custom roms created by the community. You may want to research how to backup your device before starting to flash roms.
Good luck!
This will only work if you have the good eMMC chip set W/ 2.2.x. And it's a pretty well known method of rooting phones. Heck i have this method in my signature from when i posted the same thing months ago.
You do know this method only works for froyo 2.2. Now a days mostly everyone is on gingerbread 2.3. Gingerbread bread updated device is more complex to root. It requires you to downgrade then root.
When I started rooting mt4g's this is the method I used and it took me about 3 to 5 minutes as well. This is also without using a pc. Everything done from the device. Its not as easy now though.

Search the forums on how to check your eMMC chip. (I'd post the link, but i'm on my way to work & don't have it off hand. If you really can't find it, PM me & I'll find it.) Long story short, this method may not work, depending on the type of eMMC in your phone. You will
need to root via the gfree method, also available in the xda forums. Mackster248 has a great tutorial on YouTube.

Hey no problem. The android community is about knowledge-fully (if that's even a word) helping each other. And i know we all have to start somewhere.

Why couldn't you use one-click? There's nothing to it. It's completely automated.

Not exactly one click but it worked for me. Plus cyanogen is a pretty respected source. Good luck. Also try Tsugi's custom rom for the g2x. Its actually not really custom. It is stock 2.3.4 gingerbread that was released for the European version of this phone. Its incredibly stable and lightning fast. Enjoy!!!

First you need to dl the rom you want to your phone (look for ones that are pre-rooted i believe they all are it should say if it is). Then you need to do nv flash recovery. After this you enter recovery and perform your back up and then follow the steps to flashing the rom you chose. Go to the forum the look for the guide to flash nv flash shouldn't to difficult just follow every step and your should be good
There is a new exploit that works on 2.3.3 and 2.3.4. Super One Click has been updated to include the new exploit. Search for it and download it to root phone without needing to flash Clockworkmod Recovery.
