Months ago I had so many problems rooting my MT4G. Recently, I decided to load the stock rom on my phone, just to root it all over again. I was able to do it in about 3 minutes! Here we go...
The following prerequisites can be found by searching/googling the forums.
1.) need VisionARY r14 .apk file
2.) need MyTouchRootingFiles (zip containing hboot_dhd.nb0, root.sh, and wpx.ko)
3.) download and install Android Terminal Emulator from Android Market
Ok, now that we got that out of the way, here are the instructions.
1.) Install VisionARY to your phone
2.) Unzip the MyTouchRootingFiles file to your computer, then copy the unzipped folder called ROOT to the root of your sdcard using usb cable
3.) While phone is NOT connected to computer, start VisionARY. Press the TEMP ROOT option to gain temporary root access. Exit VisionARY.
4.) Start Terminal Emulator and type the following, hitting enter after each line
SU
CD /SDCARD/ROOT
SH ROOT.SH5.) After rebooting, start VisionARY again, and gain TEMP ROOT once again
6.) Wait a few minutes (this is very important, don't rush), then press ATTEMPT PERM ROOT, your phone will reboot
7.) After rebooting, start Terminal Emulator and simply type SU. If you get the "#", you have rooted your phone!
Now you can explore the Android world by installing custom roms created by the community. You may want to research how to backup your device before starting to flash roms.
Good luck!
This will only work if you have the good eMMC chip set W/ 2.2.x. And it's a pretty well known method of rooting phones. Heck i have this method in my signature from when i posted the same thing months ago.
You do know this method only works for froyo 2.2. Now a days mostly everyone is on gingerbread 2.3. Gingerbread bread updated device is more complex to root. It requires you to downgrade then root.
When I started rooting mt4g's this is the method I used and it took me about 3 to 5 minutes as well. This is also without using a pc. Everything done from the device. Its not as easy now though.

Yup, I'm aware. But anytime you get a MT4G from Tmo, it's still coming with 2.2... My instructions were basically for people that have had their Mt4g, but were afraid to root...

Search the forums on how to check your eMMC chip. (I'd post the link, but i'm on my way to work & don't have it off hand. If you really can't find it, PM me & I'll find it.) Long story short, this method may not work, depending on the type of eMMC in your phone. You will
need to root via the gfree method, also available in the xda forums. Mackster248 has a great tutorial on YouTube.

It says to uninstall VISIONary. VISIONary didnt work for me either.
I have tried this sooo many times.. First it was r14.. Then I heard it had to be r11.. At any rate... I never got a root.. Never got a rom.. Never got any success..

Related
While I'm seeing an influx of new comers to the MyTouch4G section, most likely due to newer phones coming out and picking these up cheap.
I'd like to remind you of a couple of things prior to just jumping in and rooting your phone.
Disclaimer: i am not a mod or an admin, just a humble "helper outer"
First Things First.Rooting one's phone is not to be taken lightly. When you root your phone to are basically giving your self SU access to the /system files of your phone. While this allows for GREAT expansion of the devices capabilities, you need to under stand that it can also brick your device in a heart beat. I know a guy who lives in St.Louis who said all he did was flash a custom font, via an application, on his rooted droid 2 and it bricked. You need to read, and understand what you are getting into. Because when the rubber meets the road you are the only one who can save your phone.
Secondly and just as important as anything else else.please install the ADB drivers at a minimum. TrueBlue_Drew has put together a very simple walk-through with video for this http://bit.ly/q7MP9t. Please take the time to learn the basic commands and what they do.
Third, and this can prevent some headaches down the roadplease go and check which eMMC chipset you have. Our phones where made in two different places, and have two different Chip set serial numbers. One of them is problematic and one of them is pretty safe. Please take time to verify which chipset you have prior to flashing anything. And yes it can be done without root access [http://bit.ly/y2zmdr]. Please see this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
Fourth, and this is where the rubbers meets the road. A)
You need to decide which root method is for you. There are two different proven methods out there. One is known as the root.sh method. This is the simplest method. the long and short of it is this. You download a packet, extract a folder to your SD Cards root directory. Then you download, install and run a program called VISIONary. after you do that you enter a simple command or two to run the script in the extracted folder. you can find that method here root.sh method now this method will work to turn your phone into a rooted s-off phone. and is super easy i used this method to root my phone with s-off before i even left the T-Mobile store when i bought the devices. However it only turns off the security flags. IF you flash the PD15IMG to return to a stock fashion it will remove all SU rights.
B)
the second method is a bit more entailed but completely removes the security flags. IT's called ./gfree method. Now you need to be careful because this will root a phone with a bad eMMC chipset. Meaning it will be easier for you to brick your device. If that happens you own a 200-500 USD paper weight. And as of currently there is no sure fire way to recover from it. you can find more on that method here ./gfree rooting method.
c)
ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE STOCK 2.3.4 (GINGERBREAD) ROM
you must downgrade to 2.2.1 before you can root your phone.
Please see this link http://bit.ly/rugejM.
d)
if you do not know what you are doing i would advise against the OneClickRoot for rooting ANY phone. It's a simple path to enable someone with no knowledge to root their device.
We are glad you have chosen to make XDA your source for all of your hacker needs. But please take some time and read and study prior to doing anything. We'd hate to see you root and brick your phone because you over looked something.
the Q&A section is used for just that Questions and Answers
the Accessory section is for just that Accessories devoted to the HTC Glacier
the Development Section is just that a section where you can find ROMS, Kernels, hacker, and PC/Mac/Linux guides
the App section is just that a place for us to talk about add ons and applications
everything else falls under the general section.
hope you enjoy your stay here.
Finally, and i wanted to post this separately
please do not be afraid of the search button or Google. Chances are if you've encountered a problem, or have a question. Someone has already asked it, or solved it.

If it does go bad there is good chance you can exchange it just don't tell them anything about you rooted the phone. I sent my phone in rooted with S off with a different problem and had no problem getting an exchange now I have this 2.3.4 which is not too bad but still figuring out the downgrade process I miss all the privileges with being rooted.

Great guide! It helped me with several questions I had, I was even able to check if I had a bad eMMC, I'm lucky I have the good one \o/
My phone came with 2.3.4, I really want to root to remove all the junk that comes preinstalled.
I have a question, if I used the root.sh method (which seems the safest), after downgrading of course. If I flash a rooted stock 2.3.4 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264704
Would I loose my S-OFF? Also to install the ClockworkMod recovery, is it the same way as other phones? ex can I just install it using the ROM manager?
Also is it really necessary to flash the engineering bootloader?
thanks for this great tutorial!

Once you have s-off, you will keep s-off until you manually turn it to s-on. So to answer your question.
No if you flash the rooted 2.3.4 of the stock OS you will keep s-off.
Yes you can flash it via the recovery image, without any problems. Just make sure to do a back up first.
It's not really needed, but encouraged as you can flash specific sections of the OS, or recovery image if needed.
Thank you very much for your help!
Everything went smoothly, now I'm in 2.3.4 rooted with bloat and ad free ^_^
The root.sh method didn't work for me though, but gfree worked like a charm (was kind of scared using it, but since I already checked my eMMC was good, I went ahead and worked perfectly!)

Not exactly one click but it worked for me. Plus cyanogen is a pretty respected source. Good luck. Also try Tsugi's custom rom for the g2x. Its actually not really custom. It is stock 2.3.4 gingerbread that was released for the European version of this phone. Its incredibly stable and lightning fast. Enjoy!!!

First you need to dl the rom you want to your phone (look for ones that are pre-rooted i believe they all are it should say if it is). Then you need to do nv flash recovery. After this you enter recovery and perform your back up and then follow the steps to flashing the rom you chose. Go to the forum the look for the guide to flash nv flash shouldn't to difficult just follow every step and your should be good
There is a new exploit that works on 2.3.3 and 2.3.4. Super One Click has been updated to include the new exploit. Search for it and download it to root phone without needing to flash Clockworkmod Recovery.

I'm already rooted! Your misunderstanding my question. I wanna know what local exploit the devs use when writing the rooting software. Is it a buffer overflow? Stack based? Heap based? Integer overflow? What program or process is exploited? I just want tobknow just in case ibwanna have a crack at writing one. Also, I figured this post should go here cuz it is a question for developers not general users.

I don't believe that there is an 'exploit' the lack of root on stock is one thing, root on a custom ROM just is, no security to protect some precious stock ROM with it's 'super secret special' crap. Otherwise unless one of the devs here has compiled a ROM straight from Google source, as opposed to CM source, they are a better authority. And if I wasn't clear enough, this is my opinion, something I am welcome to as a living breathing person, if you don't like what I say and want to try it, try it, see how far you get.

first off, mt3g is right, this does not belong in development. just read the sticky at the top if you need a reference.
second, i think rageaginstthecage was not working on the gb 2.3.3 IIRC, and i think it was always just put into roms (even stock-ish ones) outside of the phone. (im most likely horribly wrong here, i never really looked into how root is accomplished)
either way, that link you posted pretty much answers your question

The root zip just contains the necessary files that allow access to /system and any root functions. No exploit. CWM is basically another OS that is meant to modify the primary OS directly.

I know the zip contains the necessarry files. That's obvious lol I'm not asking about CWM. I already know what it is, how it works, what it does. But I am pretty sure there is an exploit! How else is the program going to bypass the security precautions the system uses to prevent the user from accessing the system in the first place. I figured it was the same as a local privilege escalation on a Linux box.
But if rat in the cage doesn't work for GB. Then my question would be what exploit are the devs using when they write the root zip?

Root account is there, just inaccessible normally. If you make a Linux box login to a regular user by default and remove su and sudo, you cannot really access the root account. The zip adds su back. Cwm is an external os that has full access to the all parts of the Android os, allowing for this to be placed in the $PATH. (/system/bin).
The exploit methods find ways to become root (glitch in graphics card driver on sensation) and place the binaries.

This post has the best links for ya... I personally prefer to do the downgrade manually.
You won't regret this device, trust me ... It says 800mhz on the box but I run at 1ghz and most shifts are overclockable to 1.8-1.9ghz. Sense isn't too bad either, i.m.o, way better than blur. Look forward to seeing ya around the forums!

Since you are on 2.3.3 you will have to downgrade hboot and root from froyo. The link I posted goes to a post with links. The first link of that post is the one you are looking for...

ok sorry not familiar with down grading i usually just flash a tar file or run a windows batch file that automatically roots and runs the scripts automatically for you..

There are some batch scripts made by the developer Indirect... I believe the first link I posted has a link to that script as well... Its not difficult, just take your time and be patient...

Check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255474
Or this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357157
And there's one more link to a script but I cant find it right now.
Like Drob said, to be able to get full s-off you'll have to downgrade your Hboot using one of the above mentioned methods. Or you could upgrade to 2.3.4 and use HTC's half ass unlock tool.

I guess technically you dont have to use sdk/adb.. Im sure you could use terminal to temp root and push the misc.img, then use ShiftRR (an automated root for 2.2.) once you have ruu'ed.

Yes, but in the long run it's going to be better to have all that ISH set up anyway .
Just a question and please dont take it the wrong way, but how does one plan on working on deving/porting miui or anything for that matter without the sdk/adb? I feel it is VERY important to have adb setup.

There's no need to use the unlock bootloader thing from htc, Indirect (over in the dev section) has a root method for 2.3.4 (if you choose to update to 2.3.4 anyway) that doesnt involve using the unlock tools

Well if your taking it to Sprint. Upgrading it to 2.3.4 is probably one of the first things they'll do. Before they even trouble shoot it . if you end up keeping the device, and they upgrade it. you can use the method suggested above. The link is below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23895078
TEAM MiK
MikROMs Since 3/13/11
i took it to sprint they didn't give me a new phone sigh... and they did some stupid test whitch i know i could have done myself being a hacker and all.. i noticed phone freezing lagging like crazy my epic at the time was wonderful.. but they didn't upgrade firmware at all.. so i guess how would i upgrade to 3.4 ??
Setting>system updates> firmware update.. rooting does solve all the problems that the phone has

I've gone through every single thread in the tutorial section and, to my demise, there wasn't a single tutorial for 2.3.3. Most of them need you to be on 2.2, which is impossible for me because you've to turn S=On off before you can even consider downgrading your phone's firmware.
So what're my options at this point?

The website needed to generate the CID's is down and, by the looks of it, it's been down for ages. Are there any alternatives to making a gold card ?

well it seems you didnt even look at the link i posted. when i said everything you need is there, i meant it. theres a toolkit with the misc_version and flashgc binaries included for creating a goldcard to get supercid and changing the version number to allow you to flash earlier stock rom versions such as froyo.
