[Q] HTC Desire S - Orange ROM Install - General Questions and Answers

Thanks to Orange UK being unhelpful regarding a contract upgrade (sim only to pay monthly is apparently impossible) and then providing incorrect advice to a friend of mine, she now has the following problem with her HTC Desire S S510e.
She desperately needs to be able to use the Orange Signal Boost (UMA) app and was told that although Orange were unable to sell her an HTC Desire S she could buy one herself (unbranded / unlocked) and then this would allow her to receive and make phone calls on her Orange account via UMA. Too late she has discovered that this is nonsense - the HTC firmware / software that comes with the non-Orange phone does not include the Kineto Smart Wi-Fi (Orange Signal Boost) app.
Both HTC and Orange are unwilling to help.
So here are the questions:
1. Is it possible for her to replace the factory HTC firmware / software with the Orange version? She is not concerned if this means her phone will then be locked to Orange as it was never her intention to change networks.
2. Is there any risk that trying to do this will break the phone?
3. After the change (if this is indeed possible) will the phone then function exactly as if it had come from Orange UK (eg: update automatically etc)?
If this oddly in-reverse process is possible could someone please provide me with an idiot-proof guide (I do not have phone developer experience) or links to all the steps to follow and also where to find any required software or files.
I have already downloaded the file RUU_Saga_Orange_UK_1.31.61.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.11_M_release_178918_signed
but am unsure if this is the most recent version available and if so how to install it.
Thanks

Problem Solved
Solution:
1. Install HTC Sync. No need to run the app but the drivers are required for the RUU step later.
2. Make a Gold Card. Visit this site to find-out how:
>addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-make-gold-card-for-htc-desire-hd<
I used the SD card that came with the phone.
3. Download an appropriate RUU.
4. Turn the phone off and connect to the PC via USB.
5. Open the RUU file and follow the instructions.
The result should be a phone with the required RUU (in my case Orange UK) that will function / update as normal.
NB: If you are branding an unbranded HTC as an Orange (or other) HTC then you do not need to get involved in rooting / unrooting. Clearly you would only wish to brand for a very specific reason (such as to gain access to the Orange UK Signal Boost / UMA feature).
Good Luck

Hi all,
I am looking to do this on my Desire S, as I have problems getting signal on my generic phone.
If I was to put the Orange ROM onto my phone so I can use orange signal boosting, will I be able to go back to stock easily enough if needed.
I have recently updated OTA to
Android Version - 2.3.5
Software number - 2.10.401.4
Is the Orange ROM this version?
Thanks in advance,

Have you now sorted this?
I have done virtually the same and it works perfectly - let me know if you need the file.

I've had a similar problem, any chance I could get hold of the RUU? I can't find it anywhere after hours of Googling.

I've been searching and searching on how to solve the same problem - could anyone give me a hint on finding a valid download link for the Orange HTC Desire S RUU that nch45167 infers does exist. I can't find it from googling.
The reason I want to get back to the provider stock ROM is to get the Signal Boost feature on Orange. I've seen links to apps people have extracted of Signal Boost to use on rooted devices, but I really don't want to do that. Looks far too tricky, and not a very good success rate from reading the comments.

I've got (just upgraded from it) a Desire S. This feature was discussed extensively on the HTC DS forums at one time. It also took me less than 60 seconds on Google to find this page.

Thank you SimonTS. My googling skills must be off form. I feel embarrassed - you're quite right - exactly what I'm looking for is indeed out there. Thanks again.

Radio Stack Downgrade is possible XDA1

This has probably already been covered but I have just managed to downgrade my radio stack from O2 4.21 to 4.16. The reason I did this was because a long time ago I changed my IMEI to the same as my normal cellphone because I wanted to use my cell sim in my xda and take use of the services e.t.c. unfortunatly three weeks ago I got my cellphone stolen whilst on holiday. I was able to get a new phone but I didn't like the idea of my stolen IMEI being on my XDA too. Plus I wanted to make sure that the git who stole my phone was not able to use the cellphone as I intend to bar it. I did some searching on this site and managed to get a rsupgrade.exe that will downgrade the stack so that XDA manaipulator will allow me to make changes again so that I can re-input the original XDA IMEI..(not sure why i bothered changing it in the first place)
Anyway i'm a very happy XDA user once again...can't wait to get the XDA2!
p.s I upgarded fisrt the german radio stack 3.23 then downgraded from there to 4.16...the XDA is owrking perfectly now
Can you give the steps you took to the downgrade please because this is something I have been trying to do for a long time. Where did you get the german rsu and what made you choose it in the first place?
Can you eventually post or just link the version 4.16 of the O2 RSU?
Thx
Hi,
Had a few private PM on this subject so thought I would post the steps and files I found on this forum to downgrade:
1. If you have already updraded to RS 4.21 from O2, or similar and are unable to downgrade because the flashing stops at 1% (or 5% or even 10%) then read on.
2. It seems that different RSUpgrade.exe's work differently and there is some built in protection from downgrade/upgrading some versions of RSUs like 4.21. Good news is that I have found a work around that worked in my case. If you have nothing to lose please go on.
3. Here is the http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=433 old RSUpgrade.exe that worked in my case and doesn't included the protection. If you have a version of RSUupgrade.exe that you want to install but the flashing stops, please run it, then replace the RSUpgrade.exe (in the /windows) folder with this one downloaded , and run then it. You could also copy the files manually - you will need the RSUpgrade.cp64, monitor_ul_bs.map and monitor_ul_bs.m0 from your RSUpgrade.
5. If you do not have the RSUpgrade such as version 4.16 you can try the downloading from the following location:
Download the 4.16 from O2 and try it
Here is the link (http://www.sourceo2.com/O2_Developers/Devices/O2_Xda/xda_ROM_Archive.htm)
Hope this helps it certainly did the trick for me, remember though flashing the RSU is dangerous and can seriously mess up your machine.
Thanx a lot, expecially for the links....
Well, I was wondering if someone know the difference between various RSU versions (well, let's talk about O2 ones).
I actually have a 4.06 O2 RS and I think it only supports 3+1 slots in GPRS. Furthermore I think it doesn't support WModem. Am I right?
Do you know improvements of version 4.16?
Then, I would really like to know how many people succeded in upgrading the O2 radio stack.....
Cheers,

If your phone has a SIM Card Slot then its a GSM Model. If it has no SIM Card then its CDMA.
Ohhhh I see Thank you ever so much.
Would this be the right ROM to use - just making sure, before I start to read all the instructions ..............

You didnt say what phone you have - so we cant tell!
If you have a GSM phone (sim card) then you want to start reading here If however you have a CDMA phone (no sim card) then here would be a good place to look

Steveyg, Touch Pro's are CDMA too. No one wants to help you if you're going to brick your device. Are you GSM or CDMA? We will assist as much as possible, but help us by answering that simple question.
Ohhh I understand now
Mine is a phone with a SIM, thus GSM is that correct?

Radio is comparable to something like your WiFi card in your laptop. Depending on your location, etc, some radios are better than others. They control your signal, GPS, WiFi, etc. The most used one that I've seen is 1.14.25.35
UC Capable is something you need when you start cooking. If you're new to the Raph, you probably don't need this info yet.
SPL is the most important. Since you bought your device pre-flashed with 6.5, is should be hardSPL. This helps prevent your device from becoming an expensive paperweight. Now, it helps, but doesn't guarantee. If you put your device into bootloader (hold vol-, hold power, and reset with stylus) your device at the top of your screen should say something like SPL-1.90.Olinex. This means it's hardSPL and you are able to flash custom ROMS, like the NRGZ28 ROM you linked to. As long as they are GSM you should be able to flash any ROM for the GSM Touch Pro.
These are the basics so just keep reading the wiki. I will answer any questions I can, so just shoot me a PM if needed
Hey, if you want to flash your Raphael, I'd recommend you read this
I did my first, regardint this thread, and actually worked, really simple if you ask me!
Some suggestions: Leave the radio, for first, just do a simple ROM flash, and after that if you find it nessescery you can do it later.
The only ROM I tried for my Raphael is TAEL's ROM, it's amazing compared to the stock ROMs!!! If you're intrested click on it in my signature!
I have the following ROM;-
r:- 1.11.25.01
g:-52.58.25.30u
d 5. phoenix
Do I have to revert to a OEM ROM? If so, where do I find those please?
Good news, I've been sucessfull Phoned imaged to TAEL Roms - very good.
Could of questions;-
1. Don't have the sat nav the other image had. Can't remember the name of it. but I used to use that quite alot. Does anyone know where I can download it from?
2. Used to have an application called FLASHLIGHT - great little app. Its a TOURCH application that used the FLASH Light. Really handy. Where can I download it please.
Many thanks.

1) are you talking about the garmin or tomtom gps software? or the one where you use the GPS to lock down a location (kinda like "dude where's my car?" app for the iphone)
search on the forums under software development subforum. it's called Torch.. that or NueLight.
Thanks I managed to find the torch light thing, but still can't find the sat nav. Not sure what the name was. It was really good though. Wasn't the tom tom navigator. Wish I made a note of it, as it was fully working version :-(
are you talking about the GPS navigation software? if so then it's either garmin (mobile XT) or tomtom
Hi,
Looking on my storage card Managed to find the name - AUTO MAPA. Tried to load it from the storage card, and it works. So I have copied the exe to the start menu, multimedia folder and it works great
Whats this GARMIN Mobile XT like then?
Since updating to TAEL Rom, my signal is very low and keeps disconnecting from the network.
Do I need to upgrade my RADIO then?
My version is;-
1.11.25.01
I found this one, would this work ?
http://www.4shared.com/file/133094257/1e1ce983/BlackStone_Radio_1172509.html
try testing other radio. I changed my radio to the new ATT official rom (not so new anymore but it was the latest updated ATT rom). Test it out for a few days each and map out what you think works best and keep to that.
One thing I noticed is that some radios will crash your phone after a call.. they may give you better signals, but it will crash your phone, so be aware of that.
Hi,
Thanks for the message. Does it matter that I am on TMOBILE and not ATT ?

UMA on Orange UK

Bit annoyed to be told that *UMA will not work on my O3d because i dont have the firmware from orange (i got mine from Phone4U unbranded)
I have no reception at home.
If somebody has a copy of the Orange firmware with UMA please let me know i can provide upload space if needed,
If i am able to source UK Orange Firmware, would anybody mind helping me through the process of installing it and ripping a certain application out of it for me otherwise things are going to get messy but i dont mind to much either way as long as i can get it working.
I am new to android.
Used cooked rom's on the hermes, HD2 and Touch pro 2.
Many thanks to all in advance for taking the time to read my post.
*UMA is a service that Orange offer for letting people use wifi at home for phone signal.
**Yes i am scared ****less that i will brick my 4 day old phone regardless of history of using cooked roms etc etc ....
*bump
Thnx

Hiya
Many thanks for the link.
I had been to that thread and the firmware posted is a generic one for Europe.
Not Vendor specific.
Generic is
BIN_LGP920AT-00-V10d-EUR-XXX-JUL-08-2011+0
for OPTIMUS PORTUGAL, ORANGE AUSTRIA, ORANGE FRANCE, ORANGE ROMANIA, ORANGE UK, ORANGE SWISS is
BIN_LGP920AT-00-V10d-ORG-XXX-JUL-08-2011+0
Yeah
lol
this is awkward .....
Cheers
Maybe u can extract Orange rom and put specific .apk to your phone??
that is my plan but at the moment i have no idea what the APK is or what it is called.
i will try that first to see if it is horribly simple but i presume i will need to brand my phone :/
kind of a wierd request here isnt it How do i brand my phone mine is unlocked LOL
ok tried flashing the BIN_LGP920AT-00-V10d-ORG-XXX-JUL-08-2011+0.zip ROM
But it wouldnt install on my device using Clockwork.
No error log either so i dont know why.
I don't think you're supposed to flash using CWM. The download page says to see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1244490 for the proper procedure.
ahhh i thought that was how to unbrick the phone (had it open on another tab )
didn't realize that "was" the procedure to update phone
Anyway,
Back on UMA again after loads of other crap needed sorting.
Got the APK but like many others it just FC's and after see'ing others posts regarding the matter i am afraid i will be not continuing as it is beyond my level and im am moving home in 10 days

[Q] New 'Orange' Branded Phone - XTC Clip or Not?

Hi,
Convinced my wife to also get a Desire S and we are picking one up from Orange UK later today.
She will need root so that we can install an app to get the phone to connect to our car phone kit. I'm assuming that the phone will come with Android 2.3.3 and the associated HBOOT.
I'm guessing the options are to diable the OTA updates, S-Off with Alpharevx and use gingerbreak for root. I'm assuming the advantage is that this can all be reversed if there is a layer problem with the phone. The downside will be that we won't be able to update the phone until Alpharevx, etc, catches up with new phone software releases.
The alternative is to S-off via XTC-Clip (there is one nearby) which will ne permanent and allow pre-rooted updated RUU's to be more regularly installed.
Does anyone have any views on the best way forward.
As an aside, I'm guessing that installing an unbranded ROM does not affect any functionality of the phone on the Orange UK mobile network.
Many thanks,
Damian
Hello,
Assuming that you get a hboot version that can be s-off'd then I'd use revolutionary and follow the method that you described.
You're right about disabling ota updates do that immediately as if applied then they can seriously limit your options.
There is something called uma (I think that's right name?) which I believe enables you to use your wifi to make calls when mobile signal is weak, I believe that this can be used on orange but I don't know if your devices would come with it. If you're from UK you can now piggy back Tmobile so you have more chance of a decent signal.
If you get a later version of hboot, that can't be s-off'd then you still have several options open to you:
you could attempt to use the official htc unlock htcdev.com unlock routine, even though this devices still isn't listed as supported I've read that some users have successfully used this method to unlock their devices successfully. Although I can't provide any links so you'll have to either read around or post a further question in an attempt to get some info on how to do this method.
You could alternatively drop the revolutionary boys a line and ask them is they plan to update their software to later versions off this devices hboot To see If any etas are forthcoming , although developers tend not to like eta requests
Another option before considering xtc would simply be to wait HTC to add support for this device, it's supposed to be coming, but so is xmas, although you won't be unhappy with the device running stock, although I run a rooted custom and love it, my wife is still running stock as it's her first Android device and she's still loving it!
Although then there's always the xtc route and as an original xtc user I can recommend this route although as you're aware it's not reversible and you must consider the effect it well have on your warranty
Good luck with your choice, psst back any questions
Swyped from my Desire S using XDA Premium
Thanks for the reply.
Picked the phone up on Saturday and it is Hboot 0.98.0002 and Radio 3805.06.02.03_M.
My wife seems happy with things, apart from the mobile data/signal does not seem as robust as with her old Nokia. I've told her that a radio update may improve this as it did with mine when I recently updated it.
Think will go down the Revolutionary route. I need to check but assume that you can just flash a new radio with the Revolutionary Hboot. I think for now she will be happy with 2.3.3 and we will see how things pan out with updates in the next few months.
Thanks again,
Damian

[Completed] I just accidentally bought an rooted HTC M8 on eBay with issues. Should I keep it?!

I am in Australia and have just recently bought a HTC M8 in Amber Gold on eBay which was originally listed as new, and factory unlocked for $530. A few days later I found out it was actually rooted now unlocked, but was originally locked to Sprint. This was confirmed by a Sprint Connections application update etc, and the root was confirmed by the SuperSU app that was already installed in the phone. I'm recently confirmed this by the Root Checker app.
My phone's software is Android version 4.4.2, HTC Sense 6, software number 1.54.651.8, HTC SDK api LEVEL 6.17, PRI version 1.52_003, Kernel version [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT, Baseband version 1.05.20.0321_2.
The phone is pretty functional for everyday use except for the following issues:
- The internet network settings had to be manually obtained from my carrier as the phone did not automatically pick it up.
- The internet seems slower than usual (Signal strength -79 dBm 17-20 asu) compared to my old phone (Xperia Z1), despite the settings being specifically on 3G/UTMS mode which is faster than having it on Global Mode, and the required setting with my carrier Optus.
- I cannot access anything under System Updates. i.e. Update profile, Update PRL, UCICC Unlock and most importantly, HTC software update. This update takes >20minutes to search to no avail. This error message some time pops up when I try selecting Update profile: “vDM Client has stopped unexpectedly. An error report will be sent to HTC to help us improve our products”. This error screen would pop up intermittently when my internet didn't work but, I rarely see it now.
- Wifi would randomly switch on. I've turned off all system selections that may be caused on this. I haven’t tried booting my phone into safe mode to determine if an app is causing this.
I don't know much about phones (I had no idea what rooting was until I looked it up to get a rough idea), so I'm wondering if you experts could be some advice
I'm planning on keeping the phone for about 2 years and wondering what issues I may receive from having a rooted phone with the already above issues? Would the phone play up more? Can I use my current android version for that period relatively smoothly?
I am able to return my phone for a full refund but I don't have a spare phone and don't want to go in to the hassle of doing so if I can keep the phone (I would prefer to leave them negative feedback on eBay to be honest ). What do you guys think?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
