[INFO] A short guide to Odin/Heimdal flashing and other helpful hints - Samsung Infuse 4G

I would post this in the Q&A or General section, but since those flashing something else than stock come most frequently to this section, I thought that I would post it here.
With that being said, here we go.
I am hoping to clear up the situations when you should just flash a kernel and when you fully re-stock your phone to get it to do what you need it to.
Materials needed:
Odin/Heimdal (search up there ^ & > ) you know where. You're not a noob right?
GTG's or other return to stock tar or zip.
Any working kernel with CWM (red is the norm here in the Infuse forum)
Your favorite rom/kernel/other additions.....
If you have a situation like our good friend ee23hd2 here, you need to know how to get out of it. The following information is what I've picked up during my time of having a Captivate and softbricking it frequently. (lost count, but my Infuse has only been softbricked a handful of times in comparison)
In the situation above, the best course of action would be to get any kernel (I keep a zImage of my 1.5 kernel [yes Froyo]) for just these situations) and put your phone into download mode (phone off, hold both vol keys and plug in USB) and flash a kernel onto the phone to be able to reach recovery. Then you may proceed with flashing whatever else you need.
The ONLY time you should need to fully restore your phone is if you have a situation like I did over the weekend... My phone did not recognize my internal SD (it would read it the first time, but then say it was not able to be recognized) and also if I unmounted ANY of my partitions in the mounts section, they would not remount. Situations like this are certain time to reflash to stock and even possibly repartition with appropriate pit as I did. I booted once to make sure that I was working, then I put it back into download mode, flashed one of my kernels onto it, went into recovery mode and went back to crackflashing.
As a review... Any bootloop can be solved in most circumstances with the following:
1. Pull battery,
2. Download Mode (hold both vol keys, plug in USB)
3. Flash ANY working CWM kernel
4. Flash your stuff back on the phone.
If this does not work, then
5. Repeat 1&2,
6. Flash back to stock.
I hope this has been of use to you.
P.S.: always useful commands for those who are ADB able, 'adb reboot recovery' and 'adb reboot download'

A few small comments/missing steps:
1) After Odining a kernel with working CWM, you need to do the following to enter CWM:
If phone is OFF:
Hold VolUp + VolDn + Power. Let go of Power once you see the Samsung logo. Continue to hold VolUp + VolDn for at least 5-10 seconds then let go. You should enter CWM when you let go.
If phone is ON and stuck at the Samsung logo:
Hold VolUp + VolDn + Power for 10-15 seconds, you should see the Samsung logo blink. Release power after 2-3 more seconds, continue holding VolUp + VolDn for another 5-10. If it fails try again or pull/reinsert battery then perform the Phone OFF steps - this can be a bit finicky.
2) The above steps only work if whatever you are flashing contains a correct kernel. Most full ROM ZIPs do, but just in case, try to find a kernel that is compatible with whatever you intend to flash.
3) Make sure to do a "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" in CWM after you flash your stuff.
Also note that if you're flashing TO Cyanogenmod 7, there are a few extra steps you need to perform from Orange CWM that are listed in the first post of his CM7 thread. These steps don't apply to people going between Samsung-derived ROMs.
The basic process for flashing a kernel with heimdall is as follows:
Code:
heimdall flash --kernel zImage
Google searching can help you with Heimdall installation - it's REALLY easy in Ubuntu, I think it's easy in Windows too but I can't help you there.
You can obtain zImage from the updates/ directory of whatever ROM ZIP you're trying to flash. If you're going for Hellraiser, use the zImage from Hellraiser, not from the Captivate/i9000 ROM.

Good Post!
Now comes the tricky step....

[Q] How to Boot Into Recovery Mode After I9000 Flash

Hey all,
I'm going from the Eclair I9000 ROM back to stock, and then to Unleash the Beast 0.2. I'm back to the stock build (JF6), and am now trying to run update.zip from the root of the internal SD. Problem is, I cannot figure out how to boot into recovery mode to save my life.
I've searched for a couple hours, and came upon one thread that described the exact same problem, but said that a reflash using Odin one-click worked. I'm not so lucky.
I successfully ran the one-click Odin3 tool, but I'm still pretty sure my Captivate thinks it's an I9000, and is looking for me to press a non-existant home key to get into recovery mode. Any suggestions on how to get into recovery mode? I've tried every variation of your standard Vol up + Vol down + Power.
Thanks in advance!
Is the i9000 boot screen still come up before the att screen?

I'm not sure if you figured this out already but while your phone is off, simply press the volume up, volume down, and power buttons. Once you see the AT&T logo let go of the power button while keeping your fingers pressed down on the volume buttons. Keep the volume buttons held down until you see the recovery menu. Once there, (assuming you've already placed an update.zip file on your internal SD card) select Reinstall Packages and away you go!

Mine did that after I installed the I9000 rom, to fix it I used the one click odin but before clicking start to go back to stock I used the master clear button and let it run for a couple of minutes, even though it never got off the "starting master clear" in the script window it did the trick. I don't have the I9000 boot screen anymore and the normal button combo now works.
If you can't get anywhere doing this you can always use the batch files from SDK tools, just use the reboot into recovery one.

My last hope to unbrick?

The phone is bricked. I flashed to the i9000 firmware and was about to root the phone and didn't bother to flash the new kernel yet. I get into recovery to go to reinstall packages to install the root, and to my surprise the power button didn't work to select since I had the wrong kernel. SO I do adb reboot download and then I try to flash the new kernel. Odin just freezes there and doesn't do anything, I unplug the data cable and then it says FAIL! on Odin. I take out the battery and put it back in to see if the phone will still boot, and now I'm stuck on the phone/computer. People have tried helping and they told me about every single key combo to put it in download and none of them work. When I told Vol+ and power the screen flashes black and then I wait for it to do it the second time and i let go of the power and it stays there at phone/computer. I've done everything I can possibly see to do it and this is my last hope to get it to work again, or else I have to take it to AT&T and lose all my stuff on the internal SDcard.
EDIT: AT&T refuses to replace the phone.
From designgears' one click Odin thread. Not sure if you tried this, but it might work.
Good luck.
EDIT: realized it might be helpful if I included the link to the actual thread. Sorry about that.

Apparently my phone was stolen because when I mention the receipt, he doesn't reply.

Can't finish installing Serendipity VII

I followed the following instructions on the serendipity website but after going through steps 1-12, I ended up with an unrooted Samsung GT-I9000 2.3.3 which cannot be rooted with SuperOneClick 1.9.5 (using both GingerBreak and psneuter). Since the last portion of the installation requires CWM Recovery, I think this might not work.
I am pretty sure that somebody is going to scold me for posting this thread with the answer right in front of me; I swear that I tried looking for somebody who had this same problem, but couldn't find anything remotely close.
On a side note, this phone is a Samsung Captivate. When I did the first instance of Odin, I pressed volume up and down at the same time to get into download mode. When I did it the second time (after it had been upgraded to the GT-I9000), I had to press power and down volume to get to Download, so I'm pretty sure the version of phone has changed.
I don't know what I did wrong in the instructions; I would have posted this to this thread, but xda-developers won't let me post to the developer section. I couldn't find anyone else with the same problem. Please help. Thank you. (This is non-vital, the phone still works and I'm able to send/receive calls, but for some reason the home button doesn't work. I can live without that for a few days)
Installation:
1. Download this package.
2. Open Odin3 1.7.
3. Select the PDA, PHONE, CSC, and PIT files in their correct spots.
4. Connect phone in download mode. Use a USB port that's on your motherboard (the ones on the back of the computer). Use the Samsung USB cable.
5. Ensure that Auto-reboot and Re-Partition are both checked. These have a tendency to change after plugging the phone in, so double check them.
6. This is where the bootloader will be flashed, along with stock Gingerbread. Hit Start.
7. Allow the phone to boot.
8. Close Odin3, and open a fresh one. Select Reorient_Kernel_1.1 in the PDA box.
9. Reboot into download mode (adb reboot download, or hold Vol Down + Power).
10. Plug the phone into the computer.
11. MAKE SURE RE-PARTITION IS NOT CHECKED. If it is, you'll soft-brick and have to start over.
12. Flash the kernel (hit start). Allow the phone to reboot.
~IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY ON A SAMSUNG-BASED GINGERBREAD ROM WITH BOOTLOADERS (NOT CM or MIUI), START HERE~
13. Place the ROM .zip (You know, the one you downloaded from the giant link up there) onto the SD Card.
14. Reboot into Recovery (adb reboot recovery, or Vol Up + Power).
15. Flash ROM with CWM.
16. Enjoy!
Note, you will get some popup at start about not having network time. Just hit cancel and pretend it never popped up.
if u did step 11 and 12 you should have the reoriented kernel installed and hold vol up+power to get into cwm recovery mode and choose install from zip option, choose the zip which should be on ur sd card before. then u can flash S7 .zip and wham ban thank you ma'am u got it done
There is a Serendipity sticky in the Q&A subforum where questions like this should be posted. Please use the sticky before starting a new thread in the wrong forum.

CWM will not load

Hello All,
I can't get the clockwork recovery to work, no matter how many times I flash it. Just for some background information:
In my house I currently have 2 rooted samsung devices (S3s), and have 2 other HTCs I've rooted and installed both clockwork and custom ROMS. I'm very familiar with the process and have yet to brick a device. The specifics for this tablet are as follows:
Model GT-P3113
Kernel 3.0.8-999349
[email protected] #1
SMP-PREEMPT Thu Aug 23 23:43:39
KST 2012
Odin gives the recovery flash a "Pass" and regardless of whether I reboot the whole way before going back into recovery, or just force it from one recovery into another (holding down and power until it restarts right back to recovery), I never get CWM. It is always stock.
Anyone else seen this?
Thanks,
CS

I have - Power + Up button does not enter recovery at all.... Holding onto it will just make your tablet begin to load, then power off, then begin to load, etc. Same as if you hold the power button non-stop. The only one that gets me into any recovery is Power + Down.
What version of CWM / ODIN are you using ?
I use ODIN ~ 1,85 and CWM ~ P3113 - 6.0.1.0

I was using what you had, near as i can tell by the name, but I went ahead and tried it again. Twice more. Same problem. Then, because I couldn't understand how someone who had done it twice could be wrong, I tried several times to get the "Up" and power button combo to work. All I continued to get was a shut down, restart cycle. Out of frustration, I put the tablet down to let it load back into the OS. Then magical goodness happened - Instead of continuing on or shutting off, it went into a different loader screen.
I thought i was good to go - but not quite.
At least now I got errors I had seen with other people - Signature verification failed. Somewhere a helpful peep had posted a picture of what it should look like and I realized I was still not using the CWM loader - just a different base Android one.
So, I started the process yet again - and this time, after a few attempts, I was able to go from the download stock mode to the CWM temporary manual mode. Using the Fix CWM zip, followed by the root kit, I got it to actually stick!
So, in short - you were right and I was wrong. Only one minor addition to the instructions I'd give to those out there fighting this: Make sure you let go of the buttons (Up and Power) as soon as you see Galaxy text show. If you don't, it shuts you off before getting to manual mode. If you time it wrong, it goes into the OS or shuts down. Get it right (about a second after I saw the text), you get into the loader you are looking for and everything then is easy.
Thanks much!!!

[Q] Attempted upgrade gone wrong, cannot hard reset

I looked all over and didn't find anything regarding this problem on here, or anywhere else online.
Rooted my infuse awhile back, added clockwork mod earlier today successfully. Shortly after, attempted upgrading to jelly bean and fudged it all up.
My phone just shows the Samsung logo upon startup and stays that way for awhile.
After trying to hard reset (holding down the power and volume buttons), the screen that shows up is the attached picture. Its all jumbled and weird.
I can't get into download mode.
Am I screwed or what?
Nope. Not screwed at all. You need to flash gingerbread bootloaders. Do a search and you shall find the procedure.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
As the post above says, you need Gingerbread bootloaders. To expand on that, and to get you to where you need to be, take the battery out of your phone and put it back in.
Now that it's off, boot it into CWM: hold down both volume buttons along with home and press the power button. The second you see anything come on the screen, release the power button but continue to hold everything else. Continue to hold these until you see a solid colored background which is CWM.
It may still look very messed up like the picture you posted. Hopefully you'll get a somewhat legible CWM (You should.). Navigate your way to installing the right zip if you have it on your phone. If not, plug in your phone to your computer and go to mounts and storage -> mount USB storage and transfer the right zip onto your phone.
If this fails miserably, do what you can to try to get to download mode. If you do all the right things, chances are it will go into download mode, and at this point it doesn't matter if you can see it or not. If you get here, and ODIN recognizes your phone, you might just want to follow this and start over -- [ODIN][UCLB3] UCLB3 Unbrick - Return to stock.
If you get the Return To Stock going, all you need to do from there to get a more recent ROM going (ICS+) is to get Entropy's CM9 running, which will ensure you are on ICS, enabling you to install Jellybean. If you get this fixed, I recommend CM10.2, Slim Bean, or Beanstalk. Once you get those up and running, you'll love it. The only thing you will have to do (after loving your new phone) is to thank the awesome devs or (even better) donate to these guys that do lots of work for no money.

I appreciate the help. Unfortunately I don't get a legible CWM at all, just what you see in my previous photo. Also, my computer doesn't recognize the phone when I plug it in.
From your help, I understand how to get it working after I can get into the phone's system. I guess my problem now is getting the computer to recognize that its plugged in. It seems going into the CWM (holding volume and power) just keeps giving me the same screen. even if I scroll blindly and try to pick options, nothing happens.
Good luck
Please go and learn the unbrick Odin to stock GB with root guide first. This it's your key!
The unbrick tool guide mentionned in the previous replies is the working and proven tool, but first you must be in download mode.
It's a must to FIRST download and install Samsung Kies on your PC for the drivers or else your phone won't connect (vol Up,vol down simultaneously together while connecting to PC via USB)
Follow the Odin guide in the previous reply step by step and with a cool mind.Don't stress!!!
Try searching for the real download mode procedure as I forgot it.It's found in the unbrick guide mentioned.
If you still can't be in download mode, search the Web a lot and try to do this:
Let your phone battery die out (leave the screen on till it dies or try restarting a few times to let it die.Remove battery.
Forget the phone for a whole day.
Then try to put it back to download mode on your PC.No need to put battery back. The phone will switch on!
But first learn the unbrick Odin to stock guide as it's the whole key to your problem!
If you succeeded, then here is your first step to flash a ROM.
This is a thread for a working CWM on infuse.I used the 04.30 1.2GHz version and you can install it without going into recovery mode using SGS Kernel Flasher in play store for free:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25724638

I followed the above instructions and upgraded the Samsung galaxy infuse 4G from gingerbread 2.3 to Android Jelly Bean 4.3.
It will be difficult for you to do unless you know computers well. You will need 1 to 3 hours to complete.
Every single little step must be followed, pretty much fill in every single step.
First you must obtain CWM, it's a flashing utility which is accessed at boot up by holding Volume up + volume down + power
Phase 1:
---------
To obtain CWM head over too Jscotts odin url.
1. download the file which includes root access.
"Stock UCLB3 with root
UCLB3_Unbrick_root_1.1.zip"
2. you will also need Samsung Kies, which will install the usb driver for your Samsung galaxy. The link is on the website.
3. Place your phone into Download mode
To do this, have your usb cable for your phone plugged into the computer but disconnected from your phone. shut off your phone. When the power is off press Volume up and Volume down simultaneously, after the buttons are pressed plug in the usb cable at the same time, which should be connected to the computer.
This will place the phone in Download mode.
4. open the included Odin.exe, when you see the yellow bar under ID:COM then everything is good.
Follow the rest of the instructions on jscotts website.
Finally when this procces is done, reboot into android.
Phase 2:
---------
1) Download SGS kernel flasher
2) Click on the link on jscotts website to download a stock kernel which contains CWM. use "2013.04.30-CWM-Synthesis-1.2Ghz.zip
Phase 3:
----------
description:
Convert the phone from gingerbread 2.3 to ICS Android 4.0, as the instructions say.
Head over too: Entropy's CM9 website:
forum.xda-developers.co...hp?t=1601844
1) There are 3 links on the website for Cynogen 9 rom for Samsung infusion 4g, any one is ok. Download CG9 for Samsung infusion 4g. version along with the Gapps.
2) After saving both zip's on your sd internal memory, shut off your phone. Press both volume up and volume down and power at the same time.
The phone will boot into CWM.
3) Make a backup of your original rom for your phone before proceeding.
4) Select Flash zip, select your ICS android 4.0 rom which you saved on your internal sd. (ie: "cm-9-20120620-UNOFFICIAL-infuse4g.zip"
5) Install GAPPS as well, after step 4 is complete.
Again for the full instructions please follow the instructions on "Firmware][ICS]UNOFFICIAL CM9 for the Infuse 4G (07/28/2012)"
Phase 4
--------
1. Boot into CWM again buy pressing Volume up + Volume Down + power.
2•Install ROM: Scroll down for downloads section
•... The package will start to install..
•... Phone will reboot into the install screen again...
•... Continue to install [Automatically] If not manually flash again
•... Phone will reboot again and be at the recovery screen...
3. Install Gapps
4. •CWM: Wipe Cache Partition
5. •CWM: Advanced/Wipe Dalvik Cache
6. •Reboot
FINISH.
