[Q] How to Boot Into Recovery Mode After I9000 Flash - Captivate General

Hey all,
I'm going from the Eclair I9000 ROM back to stock, and then to Unleash the Beast 0.2. I'm back to the stock build (JF6), and am now trying to run update.zip from the root of the internal SD. Problem is, I cannot figure out how to boot into recovery mode to save my life.
I've searched for a couple hours, and came upon one thread that described the exact same problem, but said that a reflash using Odin one-click worked. I'm not so lucky.
I successfully ran the one-click Odin3 tool, but I'm still pretty sure my Captivate thinks it's an I9000, and is looking for me to press a non-existant home key to get into recovery mode. Any suggestions on how to get into recovery mode? I've tried every variation of your standard Vol up + Vol down + Power.
Thanks in advance!

Is the i9000 boot screen still come up before the att screen?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

I'm not sure if you figured this out already but while your phone is off, simply press the volume up, volume down, and power buttons. Once you see the AT&T logo let go of the power button while keeping your fingers pressed down on the volume buttons. Keep the volume buttons held down until you see the recovery menu. Once there, (assuming you've already placed an update.zip file on your internal SD card) select Reinstall Packages and away you go!

Mine did that after I installed the I9000 rom, to fix it I used the one click odin but before clicking start to go back to stock I used the master clear button and let it run for a couple of minutes, even though it never got off the "starting master clear" in the script window it did the trick. I don't have the I9000 boot screen anymore and the normal button combo now works.
If you can't get anywhere doing this you can always use the batch files from SDK tools, just use the reboot into recovery one.

[Q] Cannot get into recovery mode

i used to be able to get into recovery mode with the manual keypress. (vol up + vol down + power) However, after i flashed a i9000 rom, i can no longer do so. it boots up with a boot screen saying i9000 then goes to the att screen, then it just keeps looping that. i tried flashing back to stock but that screen is still there, leading me to believe that the phone really thinks it is an european galaxy s. that would require the physical home button to be hit to go into recovery . and to make matters worse, sdk now doesnt recognize my phone so i cant flash any updates right now. help would be appreciated
Have you tried all of these methods for Odin3 one click?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
i can get into download mode if thats what you mean. all those methods are for download mode. i just cant get my phone to recovery to install an update.zip which is quite annoying. although at the bottom of that page it says when coming from i9000 roms to go to the jf6 first not the h2 which i didnt, so im going to reinstall a i9000 rom and then go back to the jf6 and see if that works
Update: the one click odin worked and removed it ! thanks for bringing that to my attention. i never knew it was different than what i was doing. i was using the odin that you load with the files that you want to and downloading the stock firmware from samsung-firmwares.com . apparently there is a slight difference
Because there's no physical home button?
I'm having the same issue trying to get the phone into recovery mode with buttons alone...and I'm running the JM5 ROM. The Captivate, unlike the Galaxy S, doesn't have a physical home button, and the sequence on those phones for recovery mode is volume up/home/power.

Trouble with accessing Boot Screen

Here's the long and short of it. This phone is a pain in the ass to get into boot recovery. I can flash it with Odin like there's no tomorrow but when I put an update.zip into the root of the phone and then try to get the boot screen using power button and volum up and down at the same time, I can litterally hold them for 10 minutes and it just keeps flashing the AT&T Worldphone screen and will not go into recovery mode. It has but it is very random. My original Captivate would boot into recovery on demand, not this one. I flashed back to stock using Odin earlier today, then I ran Designgear's SRE V1.2.1a which is amazing, it took me 1 hr to get the phone into recovery mode. Now I have put Fightspot's battery indicator in an update.zip of it in the root of the phone and it won't boot into recovery.
I am a nooob and don't know how to open an ADB shell on my computer to get it into recovery. I don't know any ADB commands. Can anyone help? Is there another way to boot into recovery.
Thanks

Just throwing it out there. Are you holding all three buttons continually? Because once the ATT screen comes up, you only need to keep holding Vol up and Vol Down.
Turn phone off
Hold Vol up + Vol down + Power
ATT screen comes up
Release power, but keep holding Vol up + vol down
Yeah I did that. It just turned on once I let go of the power button. I used Terminal Emulator and got into boot screen. Worked great. Thanks for the suggestion, this phone has only one issue and that's the issue. As long as I can use Terminal Emulator I'm fine. I have managed to get it into recovery using the buttons 3 times. Weird.
You have to hold all three buttons until the att screen goes away. Then let go of the power button.

I know. It worked fine on my first Captivate, not this one.
just turn off the power and hold both vol buttons down while pluggin in the usb on to the phone and it will do the trick
plug the phone into your computer. Download the Android SDK
Then... command window -> browse to sdk/tools directory -> adb reboot recovery.

unbrick samsung galaxy s vibrant.

i have a real problem, trying to flash my samsung vibrant with odin, (installing the unofficial update) my phone was bricked, i cant get into download mode, the key combination vol-up + vol-down to get to download mode is not working, i can't get into recovery mode either, (well getting into recovery mode has never worked) i tried using adb reboot recovery with sdk and it comes as device not found.
Am i screwed or there is any way to unbrick?

Take out the battery, wait a full minute. put it back in and the case back together without inadvertantly hitting either the power or up/down keys. Now press the down key. While holding it down, hold down the power key. If that doesn't put you into download mode, you have done the impossible. These phones are (almost) impossible to brick.
I have seemed to have done the something similar as I was trying to reflash with ODIN and the phone went black, I left it alone for several minutes and now when I try to turn the phone on I just have a graphic with a phone and a computer with a little triangle with an exclaimation mark in the middle and nothing else happens.

i beg to differ
nothing is working for me either
So I went to This Site pathikshah. com /blog / install-android-2-2-froyo-galaxy-s/ (sorry about the spaces new user and xda wont let me post links, not spamming honest), I did exactly as it said it was working as planned until it reset after install. First instead of the vibrant screen coming up it now says:
Galaxy S
GT-I9000
Then It goes to:
Android System Recovery <3e>
on that screen it says twards the bottom:
update media please wait
E:Cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(Invalid argument)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Cant mount SDCARD:
your storage not prepared yet, please use UI me
nu for format and reboot actions.
copy default media content failed.
so when I try to scroll through the recovery menu I have to push vol Up to scroll down
also it does nothing when i press the ok button (power button), unless I hold it down then it resets and goes back to the same recovery screen
I rooted the samsung galaxy s then added a rom and the rom is crashing my phone I've tried aboslutely everything don't know what else to do.
i also have a problem
i have install ROM manager and make a back up
went i try to recovery my backup it give me first the original recovery mode i know i have to select update.zip to access the clockworkmod recovery (ver 2.5.1.2 last one) i use the option restore and start it
now my phone just reboot in recovery mode
i'm looking if some one have a working ROM backup
tnx for your help
Drago.

Thank you for the video link. I was up to that point unable to get the download/shoveling droid screen. Now I'm in the process of finally getting the phone back to stock after downloading the t-mobile update that cam through and bricked the phone.
no downloading mode
Hi i was hoping this will help me to reenabeling my bricked samsung. But i cant get it in to downloanding mode. the 3 button way isnt working and the way showed in the movie neither. Is there an other way to get the phone back to work?
I have tried all the methods posted here as well as many others from the link posted above. But to no avail.
I did everything successfully up until the reboot. Whereupon, it would not start. No amount of button combination helped me. And taking out the battery pack is no help either. It just won't start. I could use any advice.
Thank you.
I'm in the same boat now, attempted to odin back to stock and now I have a brick. It's just blank, I cant get it into download or recovery mode using any method described.
Is my only shot the jig method I've read about now?
EDIT
Nevermind, I got it. Pulled the battery, replaced it, held down both power buttons, inserted usb (already plugged in comp w/ odin open), boom..entered download mode and flashed..

[Q] Can't get into CWM recovery after installing MIUI 1.9.23

This post belongs to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278053 but since I don't have enough posts to reply there, here's my issue.
On my Infuse 4G I had Serendipity VII, then flashed over MIUI 1.9.23 which I downloaded from the abovementioned thread. Backed up rom, wiped data and cache, rebooted all good. But when it comes to enter into recovery to flash the MIUI zip again (as per the instructions at the thread above), my phone is stuck at the "Samsung" logo.
Tried battery pull, various hardware button combos, no luck so far. What is the correct hardware button combination to get into CWM from boot? I thought it was volume up + power on, but that didn't work. Tried volume up + home button + power on, no luck either.
So as of now... I'm with a dead Infuse.
Any help would really be appreciated
Thanks!
- Adriano
Same here, I can't even get into the blue CWM recovery. If I don't hold any buttons the phone will go into MIUI like normal but I want to get into recovery to backup and restore.
for me it's even worse... my phone is stuck at the Samsung logo.
Turn off your phone, press and hold down volume up, volume down, and the power button. When you hold them you'll see the Samsung logo, keep holding them. The screen will go black and in like five seconds a SECOND TIME the Samsung logo will appear, you can then let go of the buttons and you should be on cwm

I've tried going into Rom Manager and re-flashing recovery for the "Galaxy S i9000" and it says it's successful but I still can't get into recovery.
So I do have a working MIUI phone but now I seem to be stuck on this ROM

ROM Manager's recovery is worthless...
Use the instructions given above for the three-finger-salute in order to enter kernel recovery.
Entering recovery from boot can be tricky sometimes.
Sounds like Mikey somehow broke the "reboot recovery" command.

Yeah I've 3 fingered about 10 times now, pulled battery, tried rebooting into recovery from MIUI power menu and from RM menu, made sure to wait for the second SAMSUNG to appear, etc but still have not been able to get into CWM recovery. The logo just stays up forever.
Dang I don't really want to Odin back to stock anyone have thoughts as to how I can get this fixed?
Took me awhile to figure it out, I'm on Miui too and recovery works just fine.
This is what you should be doing:
1. Hold all the buttons down. (Volume Up + Down + Power)
2. When you see the Samsung logo, let go of the power and keep holding both volume buttons until you get into CWM.

Yup. Same works for any CWM-enabled kernel back in Samsung-firmware-land.
Ok well I got this fixed ghetto style.
I used SGS kernel flasher to put the Bedwa gingerbread kernel, then after reboot the female robot voice said there was not enough space in the partition.
However, at this point I was [finally] able to 3 finger my way into CWM - the red one, not the blue that MIUI was showing, and from there I could reinstall Infused from the SD card. Still no idea why the MIUI kernel would not let me into recovery!
ok figured to let you guys know how did it go for me after I was able to boot into CWM (thanks again florelui001p for the tip btw) -- was able to flash MIUI and after the reboot things went fine.
Played a bit around with MIUI (first time I was trying an MIUI rom), didn't quite like the complete reskinning of the plain vanilla android UI (don't get me wrong, the quality and amount of the work that must be behind MIUI is impressive, it's just me that I prefer things more "barebone" style).
So after my brief experience with MIUI, I tried to restore a couple of CWM rom backups I took earlier today -- and CWM was unable to restore either one... sweet. So I went for flashing the latest Infused (as of now) 2.3.3 -- and no surprise there. A great rom for the Infuse. So far with the Infuse aside from the stock rom, I've been on Infused, Serendipity VII and MIUI. Still hoping/waiting for CM7... used to love it on my old Nexus One.

I've never had a problem. Here's a trick I use to get into recovery "100% of the time, every time":
Make sure your phone is unplugged from any charger/USB. Remove, and replace your battery. Place your phone on it's side, volume buttons down, on a desk/table. Press down until you feel the volume buttons depressed, and keep holding the phone with pressure. Press and hold the power until you see the Samsung logo, keeping your phone mashed against the table. When you see CWM, you can release the pressure on your phone, reconnect to cables, do whatever.
After flashing 1.9.30, I cannot access clockwork recovery from ANY method, 3 finger salute won't work, trying from MIUI won't work, reflashing clockwork from ROM manager won't work.
What am I suppose to do?
Have you tried the steps below?

Okay so if you were one of the few people who lost recovery for some weird reason "ME" no need to unbrick to stock and re-flash I have a solution.
1: Download sgs kernel flasher
2: Download CWM community kernel
3: Flash kernel via sgs kernel flasher "unchecked the reboot button" when done flashing turn phone of "SHUTDOWN"
4: 3 finger until the Samsung logo pops up keep holding the buttons the screen will go black then Samsung logo will come up, let go of the power button and keep hold the volume up and down buttons "For about 20 seconds" then let go it should boot into Red CWM after a few seconds.
5: Go to install zip from SD card go all the way down and run update.zip it will boot back into RED CWM run update.zip again and it should now boot into GREEN CWM
6: From here Re-Flash MIUI "New Release would be smart", Wipe Fact,Wipe Cache, Wipe Dalvik, Flash, reboot at sign of Samsung logo pull battery, 3 finger into blue recovery and flash again.
7: Presto you should be set and have recovery back.

After you Odin CWM, you need to immediately boot into CWM and flash a non-stock kernel. Stock kernels will overwrite CWM with stock recovery if they boot into the OS.
When you Odin cwm make shire autorestart is not checked. Odin cwm unplug phone take battery out. Put battery back in boot directly to cwm by pressing home, Vol up and power. Hold until Samsung logo comes up the second time then let go. Now you're in the flashes cwm go install superuser, then reboot . Install "root explorer" , sum privileges should b allowed , go to "system" folder find "recovery.sh" file, it has a yellow star. Click on the "Mount R/W" Press and hold on the recovery file till menu pops up, go to "permissions" uncheck all the boxes save and exit. Shut down phone, go to download mode with Odin flash cwm again make shire autorestart is not checked , unplug take bat out. Put bat back startup. You should be able to go to cwm any time now.
This is from one of the posts I read and memorized. Thanks go to whoever figured it out.

Power the phone down completely. Pull the battery. Hold volume down while you plug in the USB cable. When it comes up in download mode, put battery back in.
This instruction, step 5.
What I do to get my download screen is : bat out , vol down, power then plug in cable (count) 1 and release power but hold vol down until download mode pops up. Then put battery in. That's the only way it works for me. Some ppl hold both buttons until download mode pops up, that don't work for me. Others can get it by pressing buttons n piping in battery and then connecting cable. Try some of these. I figured out my just by chance my finger slipped cause most can do it by pressing both buttons holding and plugging in. If I do it that way my phone either reboots or nothing happens.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda app-developers app
Don't use the power button at all to get into download mode. Just remove the battery, hold down volume down, and plug the USB cable in. It'll automatically power on. Then you should put the battery back in to help ensure a better chance at a clean flash.
