Wind Mobile Optimus 2X (P999) users UNITE - T-Mobile LG G2x

Call out to all Wind Mobile Optimus 2X (P999 G2x) users! I wanted to start a thread to share our UNIQUE experiences with our O2x-G2x phone, that is unique to Wind and our network here in Canada. I know there will be overlap with other threads, but I thought it would useful to have information in one place.
Let's start talking about our experiences with:
- ROMs and Kernels
- Common Issues/bugs
- Network/Reception
- Accessories
- etc, etc.
I'll give it start:
ROM
MIUI 1.8.19 (Current - jface release)
Kernel: Dragon
(+) Slickest GUI out there, fast, most features, very iPhone-ish
(-) Battery life blows (but better with Dragon kernel and Juice Defender), very iPhone-ish
Previous
- MIUI 1.8.26 (whitehawkx release)
(-) data does not work (abandoned)
- EaglesBlood 1.08
(+) rock solid ROM, best battery life
(-) a few FC bugs, very plain vanilla
- CM7 dailies
(+) fast, better features than stock
(-) quite a few minor bugs and annoyances, battery life is OK
- Stock Froyo
(+) pretty stable
(-) slower, BLAH it's stock
COMMON ISSUES
Sleep of Death while on charger - need battery pull to reset (happens on all ROMs)
GPS locktime FIXED - changed SUPL server to supl.google.com
Crappy battery life - using Juice Defender and CPU tuner
NETWORK
Solid for downtown Toronto - some issues with indoors
Canada Roaming on Rogers works out of the box
US Roaming on T-mobile works out of the box
ACCESORIES
Soft touch firm plastic case from Pacific mall $6
micro-HDMI cable and external battery pack from Monoprice (not happy with either)
extra wall charger and car charger from eBay (jury still out)
Looking forward to the feedback of others on Wind.

Your phone is not unique. It is not an O2X in any way. It is exactly the same as the T-Mobile G2X with the Qualcomm baseband chip. The only difference is you have a Wind Mobile branded ROM with less bloatware. Don't confuse your device with an O2X. Any developments for the O2X will never apply to your device. You can use the KDZ updater to load the T-Mobile GB ROM to solve many of your problems. Then when the Wind Mobile update comes out and someone posts the KDZ file you can run the KDZ program again to install the new Wind Mobile GB ROM.

OP wasn't saying that the phone is unique, he was sharing his experience with different ROMs and Wind Mobile network. All the threads on XDA seem to be related to T-Mobile so I do appreciate this thread.

What's up fellow WIND users. I was just wondering if you guys could point me to a step-by-step to load a gingerbread ROM? It's been a year since I last did this stuff (used to have a rooted Nexus One) so everything is a bit rusty .
Also, how's the battery life on your rooted 2x's? My stock 2x lasts about a day with heavy use, which is not bad by smartphone standards i guess. Im hopin to get a bit better battery life with a gingerbread ROM (any suggestions which one to flash?).
Thanks all!

Btw, I'm trying to install clockwork recovery mod and i'm on the step where I have to choose my phone. Is the WIND model the T-mobile G2x or the standard LG Optimus 2x?
EDIT: figured it out

OK please dis-regard my previous posts. I've figured out pretty much everything I needed to know about the rooting, backing up of roms, flashing etc...
Now my final question.
Which ROM would you guys recommend at the moment? I'm definitely looking for a gingerbread ROM, and here are the things that are important to me: stability, speed, and working video calling via Gtalk. Does the CM7 nightlies fit this criteria? What about MIUI? That MIUI interface looks sweet.
Thanks everyone!

Mobilicity g2x up in this biatch here
When I got this phone from Usa, the nexus s was still new to Canada so everyone went holy **** when the saw.the.g2x) )
Used roms:
Stock rooted froyo - extremely stable and fast. Battery good. Rocked this when cm7 were still fresh and were giving me reboots.
CM7 Nightlies- stable, fast, nice customization options. Battery about the same as stock, Not much ui things in it tho.
WEAPON G2X - stable, fast, battery good, awesome customization of launchers and lockscreens.
So far I've used those, I know there's more and kernels but I haven't played around with that yet. So far this beast killed everything I threw at it so iverclocking is unnecessarry at this point.

Thanks for the reply! So I'm guessing the CM7 nightlies and Weapon G2x have no problem with Gtalk video calling?

Mobilicity welcome here too! What download speeds are you seeing on them BTW? My brother is on them but says he's only getting about 500kbps down.
Question to all Wind member as well, what are you speedtest at? For me I'm getting around:
2.5 Mbps down
800 kbps up

OK update on the Sleep of Death (SOD) issue. FIRST is anyone else experiencing this issue. After some further observations, I'm quite certain SOD happens when the phone is on the charger, connected on Wifi-n, connected Wind network. I does NOT happen when I'm on Wifi, but connected to Wind Away (rogers) as I was in Quebec for a week and it worked fine. Nor does it happen if I'm connected to Wind with 3G data and Wifi off. I wonder if this is an issue with our version of the Baseband? Is Wifi managed by the Baseband or is it in the Tegra?
Also curious what people are getting as battery life. For me:
MIUI: lasts 12-15hr with moderate/heavy use - but using juice defender
Eagleblood: last 12-15hr with moderate/heavy use - not using juice defender
Stock: last 10-12hr
CM7: last 9-12hr
I guess, would get similiar battery life if I tried juice defender for all ROM. I'm pretty sure MIUI would not last past 8hrs without JD.

I'm still rocking MIUI, and it will give you everything you need. But you will need to purchase Juice Defender Ultimate to get your battery through the day.
Otherwise I really like Eaglesblood based on OTA 2.3.3 Gingerbread. It's a no-frills ROM compared to MIUI. I just don't remember if Gtalk video works.

WIND user here. Just signed up 2 weeks ago. In my area i consistently get around 4-5 Mbps down and 0.5 Mbps up. However, I think they installed a new tower or did some upgrades in my area last night, because now I'm getting around 7 Mbps down. All speeds are dependent on time of day/network congestion of course. But from my research and other users' experiences, I found WIND to be consistently faster than Mobilicity which is why I chose WIND instead.

Wow, that's fast. I'm a bit surprised as I live directly across the street from Wind's head office and I don't think I ever measured more than 3Mbps down. I get 16 ASU signal, but I guess being downtown and all the Wind employee's there the network is always pretty busy.

Ya not bad right
I live in East Toronto (Danforth area) so I'm guessing there are less WIND users or something.

Btw, do any of these ROMs improve the camera in anyway? I find the stock camera a bit slow in focusing and shutter.

Stock LG Froyo 2.2 camera? It's actually better than the stock Gingerbread 2.3 camera and CM7 camera. I do think the MIUI camera is faster startup and focus and has touch to focus as well.
I've also tried Camera360, it has a lot of cool effects, but it takes awhile to start-up and select the right menu/settings and then take a pic.

Yup, I'm currently running the stock froyo ROM (but rooted). Actually the stock camera has touch to focus, but you actually have to hold the focus area for about a second to change the target. So it's more like hold-to-focus. I've seen the MIUI camera implementation and I like it better. It has a much more pleasant and simple interface.

Just got this phone recently from Wind and found some nice deals on accesories.

Custom ROM / Kernel with the best battery life

Post your personal opinion here for all to see.

With cm7 and the amc chip fix implemented I have achieved 2 days on a single charge. A few MMS, plenty of internet browsing(switching from edge to 3g only when i use the internet), at least 400 text messages, a few calls, and about 2 hours of accumulated music playback.
Brightness was at 50%, and wifi was always on.
cm7 10 characters
I installed CoreDroid 4 w\ Sense and Gingerbread last night... kinda loving it a lot right now. It's revamped UI for MMS without the stupida#$ slideshow is soooooo much better. That slideshow really annoyed the hell out of me!
I just got my Inspire yesterday an ms I'm loving it. Although rooting was not as easy as rooting my Evo or Atrix, I was able to get it rooted.
I'm currently running the Rooted Stock ROM and I'm getting great battery life. I haven't flashed any custom kernels either, just the one that came with the rom. Normally about this time on my evo, the battery is almost dead. But not this Inspire...this phone is a beast! I made a couple of calls, sent numerous text and been checking FB every now and then. All I want the phone to do is last at least the 8 hours that I'm at work. Anything after that would be fantastic.

I have run both Revolutions, CoreDroid, CM7, buzz sense, leeDroid, and Dilli.
Before i say my favorite and why, I want to express that i might not have had the right rom/kernel/radio combo on some of my installs, so this is by no means a dig on ANY of them just my inexperience.
My favoirte by far is leeDroid. It has had the best balance for my phone on Battary, UI, speed, and sound.
On some of the GB roms I had some lag, especially after unlocking. On Dilli i had an extreme battary drain. I did like CoreDroid also. I have yet to try an MIUI rom as i enjoy the leedorid so much. I have never had a rom on my phone for this long.
I am actually suprised i haven't seen more activity on his thread, nor mention of his rom in the forum sticky!
Anyway, Thanks to all the chefs in the kitchen!! I have enjoyed all your roms and will be trying them all again!

"switching from edge to 3g" Do tell! Can this be done on a stock rooted rom or only on cm7? Thx
I was originally using the RCMixHD as well, but then i decided to switch it up to CoreDroid V5.1. I must say that i'm loving the custom ROMs, and must again give a shout out to the awesome teams that put these things together. I don't think i could ever go back to stock, especially now that i have Gingerbread!
That being said, my battery life has been inconsistent at best, and insanely pathetic at other times. I'm still trying to figure out what exactly is the major cause of my woes. I know when i first flash the ROMs, the battery life is amazing, losing maybe 1% an hour over night. But after i configure it, install all the apps and what not, i lose on average of 3-4% an hour, in airplane mode & with NO use at all. When i actually use it, it jumps up by a factor of 3x.
So basically, i still need to find the battery sweet spot by getting rid of the apps/settings that kill my battery. I'm open to suggestions!
Use CURRENT WIDGET (app store) to find and kill the apps that drain your battery!!

I use Team Pheonix gingerbread. 509. With no cm settings. I use adw ex instead of the stock launcher. Set CPU. Recommended radio and kernel. Juice defender on aggressive
I text quite a bit for the first 4 hours along with look up xda and Facebook. And periodically through a 8 hour shift at work I text and get on xda and Facebook. (Also after I charge it it sits at idle for 8 hours while I sleep) and I get 30 hours or so depending on use

best rom for batterylife?

hi, i have a thunderbolt and the batterylife sucks. any suggestions for a rom and kernal for the best batterylife? thanks
IMHO there are no black and white answers to this. It depends on how you use your device - more for voice/text or more for data, where you are in relation to the towers and how often you are moving between 4G and 3G.
The one bit I will attest to through experience is that the Gingerbread Sense ROMs chewed through battery a lot more than the Froyo ROMs. (Except Cyanogen Mod 7 but there are radio issues with that. Ones I have learned to tolorate as it is my DD.)
Regardless of rom, you will get max battery with imoseyon's kernel, battsaver mode, 1ghz max + whatever min your phone can handle. Froyo roms get marginally better battery than GB roms. I have not tried cm7 but I have read more than one person suggest it gets less than Froyo or GB.

Froyo 1.66 Stock (plainjanev3 I think is the rooted version). Guaranteed best battery life among the whole bunch. with moderate use, you can go a full day.
Never had any problems with any of the BAMF ROMs
I am going to build a solar powered charger. All supplies bought from Radioshack for around $30. This way, I can carry a charger with me anywhere I go.
However, I am running gingertheory, and battery life has been pretty good. Can go all day at work and lose about 60% with heavy use.

I'm going to second this one, The gingersense roms total kill my battery, but cm7 sips it slower than any other rom in my experience. It's totally functional for me, with the exception that I can't receive vcards in MMS, and the MMS issues are well known. It's my longest running DD currently.

Any tips for saving battery in bad signal area?

I know this is normal but it seems like its the worst with my thunderbolt. If I'm in a bad signal area, my battery just tanks. Worst then any other smartphone I've ever had. I'm running CM7, but I'm pretty sure it did the same when I was stock. I know I could technically go into airplane mode but I don't want to do that. Does turning off data help at all? I don't have any sync turned on so I don't think anything is trying to connect that can't but I'm not sure. Any hints or suggestions?
when I'm home I constantly have X cause I'm in my basement. I just have the Toggle switch set to 3g since 4g isn't available.
Go into this and whats your biggest drain? (i keep display at 50% 100% of the time)

Well IMHO, one of your biggest issues is that you're using CM7 in the first place. I know plenty of people have great battery life with it etc. etc., but I'm with you on this one. I work in a restaurant 14 hours a day with horrible cell phone reception cause the building is just all concrete. My phone just diesssss, but when I check into my battery life, its all ass backwards.
Take scoobarSTI's picture, and look at your battery info. You'll see that Display for you is probably taking up 5% of your battery life. 5 F-ING percent. While android system, cell standby, and cell idle take up an estimated combined 70% or so. It's just something with CM7 i guess. Hes using a sense based rom. For right now, CM7 clearly still has is quirks, but for great battery life with bad reception, CM7 just ain't gonna cut it.
I did help myself just a teeny bit, and that was by setting profiles in SetCPU. It gave me maybe an hour extra a day to my battery life.

Weird thing is, is that if I'm in decent to good signal I get awesome battery life. So for me its not like I always get bad battery life, just wanted to know if there was any tips to help with this.

try this app and see if it helps. Your phone may be searching for signal but I know finding 4g signal kills its quick.

automatically connect to wifi "if" the place you are at has it.
get extended battery
try another rom
thats about all i can suggest. good luck!

All that app does is do the same thing as hitting #*#*4636*#*# on your dial pad. Take you to a "testing" menu and hit "Phone Information". On sense roms, you'll have "CDMA Auto/LTE" (or something like that) selected under "Set Preferred network type". On the AOSP roms, we have it selected as "Unknown". If you switch out of "Unknown", i'm pretty sure, you can't reselect it, which means no 4g. We have the equivalent to this in our network setting menu.
I just never found much of a difference in toggling between 3g and 4g in AOSP anyhows

Not positive why, but Slayher used to tweet that it could bork your data to the point you would have to reflash the rom

Well today I went with just toggling data off and it seemed to have helped with my battery life. Not sure if I just got lucky and had a good day at work or what. It happens every once in awhile but hopefully that works for now on.
Switch your phone to CDMA auto (PRL) to disable the LTE radio at least, otherwise all you can really do is put it in airplane mode. IMO signal loss is the number one problem with battery life on the TB, especially if you don't have a 4g signal.
Depending on the rom you're using, there may be a shortcut in settings, otherwise dial *#*#4636#*#* to get to the radio options.

Throttled Data Speeds with 2.3.4

I've been messing with 2.3.4 and the latest radios and in places where I get 40+mbps I've been pulling 10mbps max. I have a feeling each radio update fixes connectivity but messes up the data performance.
Just reverted back to rooted OTA froyo 2.2.1 with 627r radio and the speeds are back to normal.
Anyone else seeing the same issue with the new OTA?
I can confim the reduced data speeds. My phone updated by itself.
I used to get steady 20mbps, now I'm pressed to pass 9mbps.
I will say though, the upload has improved.

I just ran about 30 tests w mr2, 802, and 906; 10 each. All results were comparable, and nowhere near 20-40mbs. So I'm going back to 906. Why? Because its newer and bigger, and that means its better. Right?

I've ran over 6,000 tests over the last six months and this is 100% noticeable to me. Now back to froyo and stock radios gives me exactly what I've been getting before. Not sure if I could keep stock froyo radios and one of the gingerbread ROMs..

I don't mean to piss in your corn flakes, but I'm NOT seeing this. Not that speed tests even report remotely accurate numbers. Most of the time my downloads are WAY to fast to be supported by the numbers I get back on many of them. I have no issues getting 35 to 42 Mbit out to New York.
Allow me to explain.
Buffers in the Froyo kernel were outrageous and misleading. They caused tests to be misleading, and basically false.
The Gingerbread kernel has more reasonable buffer levels. Hence what you see is more accurate.
I can make a kernel mod that will change the buffers to see that you are getting 100 down, and 50 up. Doesn't make it true.

That would explain the guy who posted screen shots suggesting he was getting some stupid number like 518Mbit down.

Actually I happened to have a Pantech UML290 AirCard and when swapping SIM from Thunderbolt, I'm getting the same exact speeds as what I see on my bolt. So at the locations where I'm seeing 50-60mbps I get them on both my computer AND my Bolt using Froyo and stock radio.
Yesterday, same location, 53mbps on my computer, 9mbps on Gingerbread Bolt.
Not cool.

I get all that except the fact that downloading using pantech I get 6.4MBytes/sec vs gingerbread radios where I get 2 max usb tethered to my pc. It used to be around 6MB/sec as well.
Look I'm not trying to downplay anything here, I'm glad that people are happy with gingerbread, I'm just reporting my own findings and sharing my recorded data with you. I would love to have both, but the major reason I bought bolt is the network performance...

Serial data transfer rates cannot be equated accurately to megabytes per second.
I always thought the old numbers were wonky. Speed tests on the TB would always show ~20Mb while my wifi connected Xoom would report ~9-10Mb.
Now, both the TB and the Xoom report ~9-10Mb.

+1. My battery last me a good 16 hours with steady use, and most of that is on wifi. Bad repair?
RE: Battery Drain Rate
Have read a lot of complaints about sudden onset of battery problems and experienced this myself posting a thread a few weeks ago. My Atrix 2 was "repaired" with no effect and finally replaced but shortly after receiving the replacement the problem recurred.
Since then I have noticed that even with data not enabled the “4G” signal is frequently lost with the icon changing to a grey square with a red cross inside. Although short duration this could be a contributing factor. Haven’t been in an area of consistently high signal quality/strength to see if there is a correlation but hope to test this tomorrow.
My current battery life is that even in standby with pretty much maximum power saving settings the phone requires charging about every 36 hours. I have confirmed that I do not have any software or settings that would cause this.

First of all, why was your Atrix 2 in service, and did Moto repair your phone or send you a refurbished one -or do you know? Second, your benchmark scores are rated on several different testing variables. This score may change up or down depending on sdcard size/class in testing read/write speeds, if your running a custom rom with certain tweaks within the rom it may score higher than stock, or lower depending on the OS or rom's configurations and settings. Try a different benchmark testing app, like CF-Bench or AnTuTu Benchmark. You'll notice that even though they both are testing for benchmark scores, you will have different final scores from each app. Not sure why, but I'm sure there's some viable explanation for this. I'm hitting in the 6300-6700 range on benchmark with my MB865 (overclocked to 1.25GHz) running a custom rom with tweaks, but your score seems to be abnormally low. As far as the display, have you adjusted your screen settings in any way? You can disable the 'automatic brightness' setting to disallow the phone to compensate for ambient light (or darkness) to adjust the screen's brightness. With regards to the battery, have you disabled Wi-Fi when not connecting to a network as well as disabling Bluetooth when not in use? This saves on battery because the device will continually search for connections for both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth if enabled, thus draining your battery. If you are still having difficulties with your battery life, try to calibrate it (if rooted) with an app from the market, or follow these steps to try to get the battery reporting where it should be: Click HERE! Hope this helps...

@Apex_Strider my phone had network issues after updating to latest 2.3.6 ...keeps losing signal so they said they would replaced the phone with all accessories in box with new one.I got a whole new phone box like when u buy new A2.i Crossed check IMEI and it was different ....no refurbished...i m on stock rom unrooted .when i checked the rom it was 2.3.6 but still showing new update of 32 MB . so i updated again to 2.3.6 .Difference was new lockscreen now
SYSTEM VERSION- 55.28.37.MB865.AsiaRetail.en.03
Build Number-5.5.1-EDEM-28-37
So is this update all the reason behind those issues??
Battery i will manage but quadrant benchmark is 1500 1st run on 2nd run its 1900 on 3rd run is 1890

Some users of Go Launcher running on their ATRIX 2s have complained about the very same thing: laggy, glitchy, etc. I even stopped using because it would 'hang' for a second or two when switching homescreens. I emailed the dev and got no reply. After the update I started getting these crummy performances from this launcher. So, uninstalled and running ADW Launcher. Much better in my opinion. I'm telling you, if you run a different benchmark utility you'll see your performance scores and possibly get a better idea as to whether your ATRIX 2 is having performance issues. You can always try factory reset or FXZ to 2.3.5. then OTA to 2.3.6. and see if that helps. Highly doubt its a "bad" update from Moto- but you never know...

If you're going to send your phone to Moto for ANY reason you'll have to find the FXZ file and flash the appropriate one for your location, then OTA to 2.3.6. and leave everything stock with bloat. Otherwise Moto will see you've rooted and this will void your warranty, subsequently leaving you with NO support from them -which usually isn't much to begin with.

My guess is that you'll need to flash back to stock just as you were when your ATRIX 2 came out of the box after purchase, sans any OTA updates that may have been available -but likely you just got it and it already ran 2.3.6. on the SEARET Firmware.
