I recently corrupted my internal SD card for the second time and when I sent it in for repairs they just sent me a new phone. There is a huge difference from my old one. They never replaced the battery but my battery life has literally doubled. I would rarely make it through a full day on my old captivate, but now I usually have 50% battery left at the end of the day with the exact same usage. I accepted the fact that the GPS doesn't work with the captivate and guess what, the GPS is usable on my new captivate. I never once got an accurate lock on my old captivate standing outside on a clear day, now I can get an accurate lock in my house. For some reason the screen looks better on my new captivate, alot less yellowish, colors look accurate. Guess maybe I had a defective phone to begin with. I am running same rom and kernel as before and notice alot of differences, especially battery life and GPS. Didn't know how much hardware could be different from phone to phone. Also, kc1 modem was crap on my old phone, but great on this one. Guess that is why they say no one can recommend a rom or kernel for you because it may run different on your phone. So happy I got my old captivate replaced.
what build # was your old one ? but yea these are all known issues in old builds ..
Plenty of lemons, glad you got a good one
TC, I had the same experience with my replacement. Got a new device from ATT and it's rolling well. The only problem I have now is that I haven't been ambitious enough to flash CM7 on this one.

Yeah I am picking one rom and sticking with it for a while. My warrenty period is almost finished and I want this one to last for another year. This new one feels alot less laggier than the old one too.
I personally believe they have tweaked the line and improved quity control in the newer builds..

Every time you exchange your captivate under warranty, you get 3 months warranty, so just before your warranty is up, exchange it. Tell them you have horrible gps or random shutdowns our something. I've done it twice now. have added 6 months to my warranty

If I tell them I have random shut down issues...that would be a lie. My phone has no random shut down issues at all.
I do not know if the battery drain is normal or a little too fast. I can't even tell.

I had this phone for few hours now and it is unbelieveable fast and responsive.
The screen is better than in my previous Galaxy S 4G and actually feels better and more responsive. The colors are unbelieveable and more natural than SGS4G. Black colors will not make me return this phone at all.
Thr speakers are super clear as well. Actually got surprised by how clear the sound is.
Data speeds and reception have been great as well.

T-mobile has the best customer service of all the time. I called today and I was 9 month into my contract with 3 vibrants on my account. I was offered new g2x and renewing my contract. I told them that other lines dont care about this phone but they might be interested in some phones that are soon to be released. And the rep told me just call back and they will give me full phone upgrading option to my other two lines. Cant be happier and cant wait for the ups truck now!

Did you call to cancel your service or did you speak to the sales department?
In my experience, the sales department would never make an offer like that so I'm guessing you were threatening to cancel unless you got a deal like this.
I actually talked to CS first and told them the problem that I was having with GPS on my vibrant and then she connected me to some other department(customer loyalty I believe). Then I nicely explained the stiuation with the phone having GPS problems even after the current replacement that I had. And he asked me, if I might consider an upgrade and I just told him that I could give it a try to see if the next phone is better. And then I told him that I cant upgrade all three phones right now but I might in future. So I asked for G2x and he expided for me and devided $250 into four month payment + $50 rebate. (btw, I have been with tmobile since 2004)
loving it so far only 1 problem
so im loving the phone so far. coming from droid 1. havent been able to test the 4g much yet only 2g at the house. I do miss some of the customizations in my rom Sourcery from the droid one will get to porting it to this when we get what we need from the great cm. coming over from verizon obviously. my only complaint is i was under the impression the tmobile girl would come welcome me and she hasnt shown up yet

Great phone thus far except I'm burning the battery much too quickly.
Well, I've been cringing thinking about getting the G2x due to the large post with all the flaws etc. But after getting over it and going to the T-Mobile store in my area i just received a phone with a manufacture date of 4/29/11 and so far;
No LCD bleeding
No random reboots (as of yet)
No auto shut downs
No wifi issues
No reception issues
Battery life is great (first booted the phone, charged to 100%, then immediately did a factory reset)
So basically if you're interested in getting this phone, don't listen to all the hype (which almost got me to not get it)
Just make sure you're asking for the latest manufactured date.
(either the date has something to do with it, or i'm just 1 lucky son of a...)

Which store? I have to referee out at the Field of Dreams tomorrow and I would not mind swinging by to see if they have any more of these pristine phones
It is at the fiesta mall area around alma school
Not to doubt you, but there's no physical way the phone could leave the production line in Korea, get to a shipping depot, make the trans-pacific trip, get to a T-Mobile distribution center in the U.S., and to a T-Mobile outlet in Arizona in four days.

My condolences
It is amazing how great this phone is.. still kickin..
Any idea where you may go from here? if you have an upgrade you have quite a few nice options at least.
same thing happened to me...but then I just bought another cappy
My suggestion is - backup and keep simple 9-dot lock.
Also I don't keep any financial info on the phone. NFC will fail.
I can't bring myself to ditch the Captivate just yet, though the new HTC One X looks pretty awesome. The windshield mount and desktop stand are one of the best I have ever used thats why I can't tear myself away just yet.
After rooting my Captivate and installing a new ROM (Slim ICS), it's like a new phone.
The One X does look cool, but I'm surprised there's no SD slot. Still, probably no issue for most people.
We'll see how soon the shiny wears off, but ICS on my Captivate is fast, functional and just really nice. So I can wait for a more optimal-for-me phone.
dropped my captivate a couple weeks ago... cracked the screeen...kinda want the nexus =p

I don't dare to image it will happen to my cappy
That's terrible man :/....I've had my cappy for a while now and I have fallen back in love with it...first had it and I didn't like it then I got into rooting and stuff and then found how to flash roms and stuff and now I don't need an upgrade I love ittttt

Craigslist usually has them for about $100-150. Sometimes you can find one that's boot looped someone wants to sell, thinking its permanently borked.
Make sure you report it stolen with the phone company. They will mark the imei number as stolen.

If you can get the device under 175 its great bang for your buck. Only be ready to face a few issues like GPS lock, Black Screen of Death (while charging), and random reboots if you haven't updated the baseband to July 2011.
Phone is good, if you figure, if you got a good working one, you will have a sweet phone for the price.
Others might bash it, there are issues, but you have to learn and know your device and which ROM works best. Had it for a year. Still have it. Looking to trade mine for a new device, sorta.

It was announced but they always pull our change. Most people on here will say no. If it does, more than likely it will be released for O2X and then us. There are unofficial ICS roms on XDA but most of them don't have a working video camera (taking pictures works) and some other bugs. As far as bugs... It all depends what you get, I've been lucky enough where I've had zero issues the last year. Others have been plagued by GPS locking issues and random reboots.
It's the best phone in case for development.....its actually better than Stock Galaxy Nexus in my option once the g2x has been rooted and all that....But in whole its a great device......Go for it!!
I love my G2x...now. Stock ROM doesn't work well at all. I believe it's a great phone when rooted and flashed with another ROM. I recommend Cm7.2. I don't have any issues anymore and I love my phone, but I'll never buy another LG phone again.
Hope that helps.

If you want future proof and what not, don't bother with the G2X.
Actually, CM9 and ICS dev has been slow to kick of to all devices. Mainly driver issues, and LG really providing no kind of support. Also the ICS from LG has been delayed to end of the year. My guess is it may never come.
If you want future proof and Vendor/Dev support, you might want to choose another device. When it does work, G2X is great. I think CM7 is best option. CM9 is alive on this device, but because of no device drivers and what not, it won't run as smooth or to its full potential (THANKS LG )

I got the G2x in may of 2011... Pile of crap since day 1. Recently bought the Nexus but after several faulty screens asked for a refund. Just bought a windows phone and while the OS was great, the phone had a speaker issue, so I sent it back. For the third time I am back to the G2x. This sucks lol

Wow... Sounds like you sure have been hard on your phones. Or you have terrible luck lol. Hopefully this g2x lasts at least a few months for you

I know how you feel. I'm practically stuk with this phone or 2 and a half years and I already get BSODs and random reboots. Lag and crashes. I just hope a half decent version of ICS will get released in the near future.

Not hard on them at all... I am still using my original G2x. Both Nexus phones I received had bad screens out of the box and the Windows phone came with a messed up speaker.
It just seems like I can't get away from this phone.

Damn...I'd be pissed to get a broken BNIB smartphone, let alone 3.
What happened with the 3 broken ones? Did you end up getting a free upgrade or anything? Or did they just send you a fully functioning phone?
The nexus phones were from google, the windows phone was used, so i sent it back. I guess ill just stick with the g2x for another 10 months like i agreed to lol
