[Q] Verizon PRL? - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an Epic, and my wife has the Evo Shift. The sprint tower in our area recently got struck by lightning, and in turn dropped our signal from all bars to no bars. Sprint says it'll be a few days at least for a fix.
What I'm wondering is what the accepted verizon PRL is for use on the Evo Shift. I just pushed a modded verizon PRL to my Epic, which the 'modder' has termed 00001. It was essentially a modding of the most recent verizon PRL in a way so that it won't show up as roaming to the phone, eliminating the extra steps to make a call and such. Of course, sprint still sees it as roaming. Can this PRL be safely used on the Evo Shift, or is there a more commonly used and accepted PRL version? We desperately need tower coverage for the interim. Any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks.
P.S. Your CM7 nightlies on the Evo Shift rock! That's what I'm running on the wife's phone...

Firstly I'm sure you know you will have to restore a sense rom or flash one to change the prl, there is another way using qpst but not recommended cuz it can screw your phone up. Any way go here to this thread over in the hero forums and get in touch with oostah or Bierce they are pretty good at what you want to pursue.

Thanks. I'll look over at the hero forums. But I was planning on using the QPST method, so I'll be looking over there with that method in mind. I've used it many times in the past with no issues.

Ok, I tried the sense prl update the other day. I tried every 2.1 sense I could find to do this. On each one I would type ##775 and when I would press the last #, it wouldn't do anything. The dialer would clear itself ready to start over again. I tried mikmik, twisted, etc. I tried to find an original froyo rom but the links to one in the wiki are dead. Anyone suggest a good rom to use or one that works for you? Link me please. Also, if the roms I've tried have worked for you, suggest what may be wrong. I tried the original mikmiks and the wouldn't even load on my shift. Never got past the splash. I really do not want to unroot. Thanks guys!

You need an older version of epst.apk.
I had to do this before and it works, but you need root explorer or adb to push it on the shift. The epst needs to be version 2.1 I believe. I can't attach from this app but a quick Google will come up with it.

why wouldn't you just root your evo? 2.3 has been out for a while, I'm using it on my sprint hero.. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for sprint to update to 2.3
I might be kicking a dead horse but I don't really like the design of the Echo; the idea is cool but the actual functionality might be lacking; for me anyway.
Having two screens will have a bigger rain on the battery and reviews have stated that the phone slows down a bit when simultaneously using different applications.

See I would root my evo but there is just so much work involved in acctualy getting to the point of flashing rom's and I don't know much about what I would have to do inorder to do it. Also I've only had it since December 1st and don't want to risk bricking it. Also from what I heard the GB roms are pretty unstable...

It's almost impossible to brick an Evo, and I mean that. All you do to root is go to Unrevoked.com and download the application and run it with your phone connected. It's not hard at all. Flashing a ROM is as easy as downloading a ZIP file and putting it on your memory card, and then going into the recovery menu and choosing it. There's even protection built in that checks the integrity of the ZIP before flashing it, so if there's something wrong with it, it won't flash.
Anyways, when your run Unrevoked, it will root your phone and add a custom recovery image, but it won't flash a different ROM, so you have nothing to worry about.
unrevoked took 10 min on my phone, been flashing zips since jan 1
I got my Evo on September 1st, which I think was before Unrevoked was released (or at least before I knew about it). I did it the hard way. But after going through a bunch of replacement Evos, I've been using Unrevoked. I love how you can flash any recovery image you want with it.
Ok ill give it a shot but what do you guys recommend? Unrevoked forever or unrevoked 3? I don't know the difference... also how do you get clockwork recovery or whatever? Or is it not needed. Any help is very much appreciated.

Just download Unrevoked. Unrevoked Forever is included and is just the portion that sets your bootloader to S-OFF (allows you to flash other ROMS). It's completely reversible in case you need to take your phone in for repair or exchange. I'm saying this from experience.
After Unrevoked, download ROM Manger from the Market and go to town.

Im guessing thats not the right way to remove ATT stock apps? lol I been browsing forums but can find nothing for HTC Inspire 4G
If your not to sure what you should or shouldn't delete, then the best thing for you would be to just flash a stock rooted rom. Like clearD, tcp, or dilligaf.
Titanium backup is the right way. Why don't you try twopumpchump optimized stock Rom in the development section. We're very helpful over there and will walk you through it. You can flash a ROM that already has the bloat removed.

Im kinda nervous to flash roms, I spent 3 hours last night reading/prepping myself for the root, was so nervous of a brick (btw new android user came from iphone) I have a buddy who had a nexus he bricked trying to flash the cryageon rom which is a well trusted rom. Just really scared >.>
Plus will flashing a rom remove contacts ect?
It's not as hard as you think. Take your time though. Best to do your research. Check out the Rom I suggested though and drop in if you have any questions.

As long as you have them saved on your sim no. Personal data yes. Apps not if you back them up. Make a nandroid back up before flashing. All you have to do is download the rom, place it on your sd card. Then boot into recovery install zip from sd card, choose zip from sd card, pick the rom select yes. You just flashed a rom.. As far as I know no one has completely bricked their inspire, even the people who have had corrupted boot loaders have been able to recover.

Honestly, I haven't had a chance to sit down at my desktop and try and mess around with it, college has taken up a lot of my time. I will say its a lot more complex then people think it is. It makes me really appreciate the people who bake roms and make themes.
I will probably sit down this weekend try tweeking a few things, and hopefully get it to work with out boot looping. Makes me wish some one lived around here that could teach me a few things I am a visual learner. I will get one working though .

You need to read mudknot's stickied guide front to back several times. The best advice anyone can give you on it is read, read, read, and read some more. The process is not complicated, but is not easy by no means. It will happen if you read, be patient, don't rush, and follow the steps precisely.

Im trying to follow the Ace Hack Kit (v11), but when I try to run the hack-ace.sh code, it asks me for the root password, which I don't know and can;t find anywhere online. I feel like an idiot for asking, but what is it? Ive been searching for hours.

Lol. Man the keyboard really had it in for you on that one.
I like "blowy" though. It's a refreshing change.
I have had two inspires and on my first one I used Bubby's rooting program only because it did not require the use of command prompt as much as the Hack kit did at the time, but on my second inspire I used the hack kit because that has truly been turned into a fool proof way of rooting and it seem's that bubby has abandoned his rooting program because it has not been updated for sometime. The hack kit does it all for you all you have to do is tell it what you want done by entering either a 1,2 or a 3 and it does the rest.
As for rom's I use the Coredroid because it is closer to the HTC stock sense and Surgio keeps up on the updates and the bugs also.
I'm on my first Android with the Inspire and rooted a few days ago using the hack kit... it was very simple and all went well. I've gone through a few roms already, probably didn't give each enough time but wanted to find something I liked and now ended up with GingerBeast. There is a problem with GPS though with Gingerbread but if you look for gingerbread gps fix it can be taken care of easily.
You should give each rom at least a week to see how it works, there is a wierd thing with rom's they need a couple of days to settle in to the phone and to see how the battery and everything else work with that certain rom, that is why I have chosen one rom and have stuck with it through two inspires, I have found coredroid to be the best rom for my purposes and none other fit the bill.
I am also new to Rooting of my inspire, but not a noob to android by anymeans. I searched and searched through and through the thread with the simple one click root. I understand what it is that i need to do.
But for the life of me, i cannot get the simple one click root application to download and install on my computer. I have my antivirus and all off, firewall turned off. I download the file, it starts extracting and unziping. Then it goes to installation. The green bar at the bottom gets up to about 90% full, then the entire screen just closes by itself and thats it.
Restarted my computer 4 times and tried it again 4 times last night with the same results. SO i guess my question is not going to be how to root, i think i got a grasp on that one, but can someone point me in the direction of a different link for the one click app or lend some advice of how i can get it installed.

I had the same problem with my old XP laptop. I studied for a month, was sure I had my PC set up correctly. And Bubby's just would not run on my PC. Ended up using the hack kit which worked. Thanks for the response. It is appreciated. I did do those updates amd still no luck. Guess its the hack kit for me.

How can I root?

I have the HTC Inspire running stock 2.3.3
I have searched, and tried everything, but nothing is working. I have tried both methods available though ace-hack-kit-v12.3. I have also tried Bubby's one click GUI, as well as simple one click, super one click, and gingerbreak for good measure, and yet nothing seems to work.
ace hack kit works
Ace hack kit doesn't achieve downgrade, it hangs at sending zip file, and then on the alternate root meathod it reboots without downgrading.

If you're using 12.3 and downgrade method two, there is a small typo in the script. There was a new version of the script posted that should get you back in business. You need to just download the new script and put it in the folder where the original was.
The below one worked for me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352
I had the same problem as you allenrb2. I ran the Ace Hack Kit v12.3 and it would just freeze on step 2 when it is trying to install the zip file. To solve this problem, I just went on my other computer and ran the Ace Hack Kit from there. It went just fine no hanging at that zip file in step 2. So maybe doing it on a different computer will work for you, like it did for me.

The best radio is the one that works the best for you. Everyone has different experiences with radios depending on device, ROM, location. Best things to do. One go to the inspire radio thread and read what people have been using and experiment...flash a season and give it a couple days to see how it does then change if need be. OR secondly I would see if my ROM has a separate Q and A thread and go there for suggestions.

I thought getting S-Off would be hard with the new bootloader. All you really need is some free time (Hour at the longest), and some Tigers Blood (Keeping the SWAG up).
Carrier Unlock can be done for free, on a stock rom. A simple terminal command, and BAMN! Unlocked.
Rooting is so simple, ADB and 10 minutes.
Moto devices tend to not have a recovery image. Bootstrap is all you have. Going from an HTC device to Moto is a hard thing to do. When you root/unlock the device, alot of issues arise. Plus the D3 has no devs, only Hascode. You'll have 1, 2 good roms. Atleast here you have some more choice. Motorolla devices suck. I've worked with phones a better part of my life, and know many in the game. I'm best friends with a Motorolla phone tester. He's using the new Quad-Core Moto phone (Spyder 2X), pure Jellybean on it. It sucks ass, slower than slow. Our phone murders it in speed. I've never meet a happy moto owner. In the area i live in, having some best friends whos parents work for Moto is normal. Even there parent, engineers for the phones......say there P.O.S.

Nothing that is worthwhile is EVER easy. As true with phones as it is life in general. Good Luck though.
BTW......it can only honestly be considered "semi-help" because no one offered to do it FOR you. JMHO....

Lemme try and make a video. I have a spare DS, but none of the buttons work. I can try to make a video if it helps. But I'll have to see.

1 hour of research, like 20 minutes of work.
So quick and easy that months later I forgot that I did it already.
Also, I used the Droid 3 and Droid 4 at work and they suck. Build quality seems cheap, keyboards are too clicky, and phones are enourmous in size.

thank you sir you are a scholar
I'd hate for you to leave the doubleshot scene because you couldn't get the phone rooted. Its a great phone with great devs. Its a touch confusing, this one, because the firmware rev changed the process, and it may not be immediately apparent which of the instructions you need.
These are the steps I took three weeks ago to get a new-in-the-box 1.63 phone from its original condition to cm9. I ended up using hassoon's toolkit but not his gui. But the download contains adb, fastboot, a working recovery, and such dlls as are required. Used htc unlocker procedure, and I'm still s-on and it hasn't been an issue (except that I have to have my laptop to flash new roms.) So you can put the wire down.
Fetch hassoons toolkit. Fetch the HTC sync installer. I presume you've done all this, but I'm putting it down for the sake of completion. Download cm9 alpha6 to your phone's sdcard. Also, open the cm9 zip and copy the included boot.img to your computer. Probably should put it in the directory created by hassoon's, right next to fastboot.
Run the htc sync installer as far as installing the usb drivers. Cancel out before installing sync.
Extract hassoons toolkit somewhere handy.
Go to HTC's site and walk through the unlocker process. Use the binary adb in hassoon to perform the instructions therein.
Now you have hboot 1.63, unlocked, s-on.
Use fastboot in hassoon's kit to flash cwm. Don't forget to clear data and cache. I usually go ahead and wipe system and dalvik cache.
Boot into cwm. Install rom. Power down, then power up to hboot. Switch to fastboot mode.
Flash boot.img using fastboot.
Reboot.
Profit.
My phone is always with me. I'll pay attention to yer thread if you have more questions. Call it my contribution. Ftw.

Oh and I have no idea what the actual process is for rooting the stock rom. Use miktouch for that. Stock with all the work done. Its the only way to keep the camera AFAIK. But I live on cm9.

maybe we could get on irc at 11 est because I for one need to try the newer radio to see if it will stop my X for signal sometimes, and with the rev boot loader the new radio boot loops me as soon as it goes to sleep and I wake it

I'm down for that, but I'm probably useless until Sunday. I have two jobs and I'm scheduled a shift each on both of them today and tomorrow.
