[Q] Can I restore old backup in new phone? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My HTC HD7 has a memory card failure. I return it to factory and now I have the mother board replaced and the phone comes with a new serial no.
Now I have the device with OS version 7004. Is there any chance that I can restore to the system backup that I’ve done during the previous update to 7720?

You've already tried to restore the backup and it failed? Then I think there's no way to restore it =/

Have you tired the old restore file? I was wondering if the restore files are device specific also because I have a new phone but lost the restore file for it. I still have a restore file from an older phone (had to exchange phone because of hardware problems).

Sadly no. The backups are device specific and will not work on other devices. You have to start all over again.
If you use the same windows live ID u used in earlier device, then your contacts will be reupdated. ALso from zune you can view your previous purchase history and reinstall all those apps.

Just make a backup using this app to be sure.
However, Zune will update your phone, it doesn't replace stuff.
For example, I've reset my phone 3-4 times and it never replaced my old photos, although the counter is the same
ok...so what if i changed to another phone of the same model... could i still use the original backup?
If not, are there ways to port a backup from one phone to another? (of the same model)

Problems restoring from backup made for Mango 7720...

So, I had the Mango RTM 7720 running on my Samsung Focus, but it wasn't ChevronWP7 unlocked. Wanting this, I made a full backup of my phone using hx4700 Killer's backup too. This left me with a 19.5GB folder, containing my entire phone's contents backed up. So, I flashed back to 7004 and after a lengthy and ridiculous process I am now back on 7720, but fully unlocked this time.
However, when trying to restore from the backup I made on 7720 before, both the Backup/Restore tool and the Zune software give me an error. The Backup/Restore tool gives me a blank error message, and the Zune software says an error code of 801812E0. I've tried this restore on two different computers, with every version of the updatewp.exe tool and the Zune software imaginable (4.7, 4.8 betas, 4.8 release) and nothing works at all. I was just thinking though, if I get the restore to work would it just leave me with a locked Mango again? Or would it retain the unlock? Either way, please, what can I do to get this restore to work?
Please, does anyone know? I'd like to have my phone back, hahaha.
If you get it working it will be locked mango again as pone is restored exactly as it was prior to back up.
I had no issues with the tool. To restore back up I use 1.8 tool and Zune 4.7.
Move your mango back up file somewhere safe.
Use the tool to create new back up of current device state.
Disconnect from the internet (stops Zune auto update to 4.8)
Delete current back up file (or move somewhere safe if you want)
Move your mango backup to the correct location
Use Zune to restore back up
This has worked for me but can't guarantee it will for you

as flashmaster correctly states, you will get your locked Mango back. At this point you have to make the decision whether you want your media back from your previous backup or not. If you do, roll back (if you can) and sync your media to the PC. Once your media is backed up, restore the current state of Mango back to the device.
Make sure you make a complete backup of your current state before you do anything else.
I suggest you use v1.4 or v.6 of the tools and the latest (4.8.2345) UpdateWP.exe, Zune.exe) to make the backup. If you read the latest posts in Heathcliffs thread you will see that some of us had problems with the switcheroo the v1.8 does with files.
Only trust backups that give you a completed message and that you can unplug the phone. The phone needs to reboot itself. If you do not get these, then your backup is hosed (somebody bricked his phone restoring such image, see thread latest posts).
If you do not care about the media on your old Mango backup and you already have your media backed up to the PC I suggest you stay with the current Mango and only make a backup of it.
good luck
I have now run into problems with 1.8.
I would go with prev post comments and use 1.6. I've had a much smoother experience using 1.6

Backup my wp7 now.. start over then restore?

I've been having issues on my phone that are just pointing me into a direct that I should just reflash the stock rom to my HD7 and let zune do my updates to the current release (i've forced updates in the past and ran a few things as test) and my phone differs on how it handles "things" than compared to my wife's phone which I haven't forced any updates on.
My quest is, can I do a backup on my phone and restore it after I downgrade and update after? I don't want to have to go through the process of having to download all of my apps over again. My phone numbers are stored online and my pictures can be restored no problem. I just feel I have issues that may be driver related on my phone.....
Blah blah blah... long story short.
Set a backup.... Flash original rom (however I figure out how to do that) and then restore from the backup.
Happy new year, and thanks for any of the help.

Restored Old Phone To New; Now Can't Connect To Network?

Hey all,
I restored a backup of my old phone made in TWRP – a full backup, including Boot, System, Data, Cache & EFS – onto a new D850 I got. Both the old phone and the new one were able to connect to AT&T before this.
Now the new phone, with the restored backup from the old one, displays a network searching icon indefinitely upon reboot.
Any thoughts as to how to fix this?

Why did you restore a EFS back from your old phone to your new one? Unless you backed up the EFS from your new phone there may not be a way to fix this. EFS Is different for each phone you should never restore an EFS from a different device.

My *guess* is that I should not have overwritten the new phone's EFS with the old phone's? I think I backed up the EFS of the new phone before doing so; will restoring it fix my issue? If not, how screwed am I?

See if you have a backup of the new phones EFS try that and report back. If not it's pretty much a WiFi only device.

I restored the new phone's original EFS, and all is well.
FWIW, my reasoning behind flashing everything from the old phone to the new was that is what it said to do in every guide I read about transferring from old to new. I didn't realize EFS was supposed to be excluded; I didn't realize the EFS from one phone would be incompatible with another
In any case, crisis averted – thanks for the confirmations along the way

It's not that the EFS is not compatible. But the EFS stores info like IMEI etc. you can't have two phones with the same imei. Each EFS is different. When restoring you don't have to restore every thing though. I'm glad you had a backup! As without that it pretty much would had been an wifi only device. Your very welcome .

Android backup/restore software to recognize a previous backup

Sorry guys, i made a grievous mistake whilst trying to factory reset my wife's samsung J7 by using the free 30 days trial of fonepaw android recovery tool. It was only after resetting the phone that i realized the software wont restore except i buy which is a bit tight now. Can you recommend another free software that can use this backup i have from fonepaw to restore back into the phone. This is really a matter of integrity and she has most of her important contacts on the phone. Please kindly help.
