Hi,
I have a 5GB per month data plan with TalkMobile. They are charging me for close to £500 for using 9.5Gb of data between 1st to 13th of July, even though my data usage app only recorded 2.4GB used. I’ve finally received a print out of my bill (14 pages), I’ve noticed something very strange and would like some help please?
Here is a segment of my bill:
Time Number Called Duration Cost
08:00 TKCONTRACT 48:50 0.238
08:00 TKCONTRACT 48:49 0.238
08:00 TKCONTRACT 48:50 0.238
08:00 TKCONTRACT 48:50 0.238

08:00 TKCONTRACT 48:49 0.238
08:00 TKCONTRACT 48:50 0.238
Based on the cost of £0.10/mb overuse fee, the sim card was receiving 24kb of data between 6 to 11 times every minute. This cycle repeat itself 60 times an hour and 24 hours a day.
The sim card used up extra 4.5Gb of data in 20hrs between 12th to 13th (7 pages of itemized bill) before TalkMobile suspended my service.
The tablet spent most the time at home on WIFI, I’ve only used the 3G for streaming video podcasts (2.4GB). The carrier’s attitude seems to be the data was used so I’ve to pay them, they refused to going into detail on what was sent and received.
I’m not willing to pay the extra charges unless I find out the course of the strange data usage. Can you guys please suggest some ideas on how to find a solution for my problem?
Thanks for reading this long post.
Is it possible you have a virus on your Xoom? Some third party programs are made to transfer data unknowningly and use bandwidth, also text messages.
Check all your installed apps for anything weird.
Also is your bluetooth on or off? Some people can steal an internet connection? Happened to me, got charged an extra $1000 in a month on the company phone. Luckilly my company covered it.
What about WIFI hotspot? On or Off?
Which data usage app are you using?
NetSentry shows all traffic on all ports. Too late for this instance, but something to use to check in the future. I primarily use it on my phone since T-Mobile throttles after 2 GB, and its recorded usage closely matches their records.
It would show if an inordinate amount of bandwidth was going through BT or WiFi hotspot.

Just got the same on my mobile - also with Talkmobile - Can a virus target one carrier or is it likely to be something to do with the carrier themselves?
Anyone know which virus/app I should look out for?

I'm at a loss to understand my data use. I check email every 30 minutes or so, and have the phone configured to download 4K tops. I receive around 25 messages per day, so that is 100K in downloads. I have weather checked every 5 hours, and it records data use, at around 40K per day. T-Mobile says I use 1.5MB per day.
Moreover, when I switched from the Treo to the T-Mobile MDA, my data use went from 50KB per day to 1.5MB, and my behavior is not significantly different.
As I have an unlimited plan, this only matters in roaming, but it matters a lot there, as travel that used to generate $10 in charges is now generating $450.
Any ideas about what might cause such large unnoticed data use?
Like you, I have my Cingular 8125 set to check emails every hour and receive 40 - 50 per day with the full message instead of just the headers. In addition, my weather program updates the forecast and current conditions every 2 hours. I may spend 10 - 15 minutes a day web browsing. When I divided the total data useage on my last bill by the number of days in the billing cycle, it cames out to just over 2mb/day. WOW!! Didn't know how much I was actually using.
However, I also have the Unlimited Data Plan with Cingular, so I don't incur extra charges for it, but 2mb/day seems pretty high to me.
Hi guys,
I've been spending time trying to figure out how to squeeze battery life out of my Nexus 5. I've flashed Carbon, Franco kernel r54, played with brightness, turned off the "OK Google" keyword detection, and so on. I'm no phone noob, but I'm at a loss.
The reason I even got on this path was due to a semi-rare issue where I would lose 30%-40% overnight doing absolutely nothing (with 4.4.3). That appears to have stopped with Franco and turning off the keyword detection. I get about 1%/hour burn on idle, which is fine. My issue is the 15%-20% per hour burn and/or excessive warmth during regular use. Any suggestions? (Even obvious ones, I may have overlooked them).
As well, does anyone know what Google Now features I'll lose if I turn off location reporting? I like the weather, parking, travel time, etc. I'd prefer not to lose them - how does that actually affect battery?
Thanks in advance!

Go here. Read post number 2 carefully.
And yes, location services for all your using it for will take a good toll on your battery. Especially if you're on data and your signal is weak.
---------- Post added at 04:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:36 PM ----------
Also see post 1. Post the recommended screen shots in that thread for more efficient help.
With no screenshots, any advice is a guess. ?
I've added screenshots here. I have location in high accuracy and location reporting, location history, Gnow, and ADM on.
My standby time is great, but I burn 15% per hour screen on - is this normal? Will I reduce that by adjusting location settings?
Also, will I lose weather, parking, etc from gnow if I turn off location reporting?
Finally, any suggestion on temperature regulation?
With all that enabled....I'm surprised you get the battery life you are getting. Lol
You realize you're on pace for just under 5 hours screen time....with basically all the bells and whistles running.
Go now and enjoy your phone.
---------- Post added at 08:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:09 PM ----------
Tip for next time tho....when posting screen shots, a few hours of stats doesn't give a very accurate picture.
Next time charge to 100....get down as low as you can, before you charge....and then take screen shots.
Well damn! I figured that may be the case, but I'd seen others posting numbers like 5%/hour for SoT but they must have a lot more turned off. I usually have a charger nearby and I like my toys!
I'll be sure to post a way more round view of stats next time. Thanks for helping and not making a forum noob feel bad.
Percent per hour while using the phone can be WILDLY different depending what you are doing. And again....its a more accurate number once you've drained the battery almost down.
Again....for your setup....I'd guess you'd get 3 to 4 hours screen time on average. So you're doing well! ?

This is with location and a lot of things off.......

But that's over 21 hours as well.
I'm currently on the stock 4.4.4 modem and I think it consumes way too much power. As you can see from the screenshots, it consumed a ****load of power for 1 hour of call, and no, I keep my wakelocks under control, 98% deep sleep, so what consumed the battery is simply the 1 hour of phone call and 1 hour of screen on. Ironically, the phone call used more power than the screen, which is kinda absurd to me...
So yea, I was wondering if you also noticed that the 4.4.4 modem drains so much battery.
Thanks,
TD
The thing with modems is that every modem works differently for every person. What causes drain for one person will be amazing for another, this is due to usage and almost infinite environmental variables that all contribute to the radio performance. This thread will not help you learn what the best modem is. You'll just have to try them all and find the one that works best for you.
Better a radio that drains than one that loses connection, no?
I use 4.4.4 modem and still get the usual 24 hours and 6 SoT hours....usually.

Same, but we don't usually use our radio very much haha. I've actually noticed the radio is much better at keeping its connection even in concrete buildings that were giving my phone data troubles in earlier versions. This may have come at slightly higher drain but nothing too noticeable for myself.

I use the .15 modem. I have 15,17, and the new one, and flash between them pretty often. 15 locks down a connection quite a bit when the other 2 won't. Not always, but it has been worth the experimenting..
You had the screen on a hell of a lot, the main problem. Where cells are in relation to you, is what causes you to use more power. If it's jumping from mast to mast or 3~4g

Hi fellow Nexus owners.
I've noticed recently (past month or so) that my phone's battery life has taken what seems to be a significant hit. I was getting around 15 hours on a charge with light to moderate use. I am now consistently getting 10 hours or a little more.
I'm running 4.4.4 stock, WiFi on, GPS = high accuracy, and have used both ART (current) and Davlik with roughly the same results. I'm a bit disconcerted by the higher battery use by Android System and Google Play Services.
I contacted Google, and was offered warranty replacement. However, I'm not sure it's worth it. How does this compare with your battery performance? Is it expected for an 8 month old device? Thanks for your input.
one important thing, how much screen on time do you get? as how long the phone last between charges doesnt say anything, as we all use our devices differently. for example, i only see about 7-10 hours, but im a heavy user, that sees about 5 hours screen on time.
Go to the battery help thread in my signature.... Read the first 4 posts. If you need help still, post the recommended screen shots from post 4. ?

2.5 is normal, on the low side, but normal. 1, yuck!
Turn your brightness down! i keep mine about 15-20% most the time. when i raise it to 35-40%, ill get 30-60 minutes screen on time less. also, wifi, bluetooth, turn them on only when you need them. speaking of wifi, go to you wifi settings, hit the 3 dots in the bottom right, press advanced, then disable scanning always available. this will keep your wifi really off when you turn it off. otherwise google uses it to look for your location, even when you turn it off.

Sure, but you've never asked the community to help. But really, it's not my concern, is it.

I guess complaining is easier? ?

Do your methods help 100% of the people that follow your guidelines? Just accept that the battery is only 2300mhz so by tweaking a few settings would maybe add in an hour of juice give or take. Believe me, I have tried everything suggested, and have owned this device since release, the battery is Underpowered when used to power up a 5 inch, 1080p screen. You won't find anyone saying the battery is way too overpowered.

i do zero tweaking really, and get around 5 hours screen on time. all i do is run rastakat/trinity, keep crappy apps off my device, set up my device right, keep my brightness lower mostly, and i live in great coverage with great lte data speeds.

If you get 1 to 2 hours screen time.... You either have a defective battery. A very poor signal while in data. Or a really bad draining issue from an app or something.
That isn't normal.... And is well below the average. Well below the low end of the average. And that's average with everything on... Every feature.
But OK.... You win. I'll shut up about it. ?
---------- Post added at 12:20 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:18 AM ----------
And yes.... If you follow every single tip and piece of advice on post 2 in the battery help thread.... And don't game and your signal is decent.... You have to at least get 5 hours SOT.... At least.

Or you have a wakelock Issue... Another reason why it would be any less.

I have noticed exactly the same thing for around a month, and Google Play Services now constantly appears on my battery stats. I was fairly convinced it's an issue with the Google Play Services 6.1.xx update as I was getting this wakelock:
wake:com.google.android.gms/.auth.be.proximity.authorization.userpresence.UserPresenceService
Googling it reveals little.
As an example, at the moment my phone has been off charge for 26 hours with 1 hour 40 mins screen time and is at 10% battery. That might not seem too bad but I have a screenshot from around a month ago where I had 49 hours off charger with 4 hours 2 mins screen time. Like you, 4.4.4 completely stock unrooted.
I'm going to see if the imminent Lollipop upgrade magically fixes it else it'll be a factory reset for me as I've given up finding a cause.
Hi
I am thinking of buying the phone. But battery is a real concern for me (my last good phone battery wise was Z2. Since then I had the LG G4 and currently on a temp phone the HTC M7 whose batteries are horrendous).
I am almost pulling the trigger on this phone but those two concerns are quite important for me.
Thank you,

Hey on a mixed general use with 4g .You would get screen on time between 3.5 to 4 hrs. If on wifi full day 4.5 - 5 hrs Sot.

Battery isn't as bad as i expected it to be from all the comments I heard. It's about the same with Iphone 7 Plus that i have. It dropped about 3% overnight without charging. As for use, I haven't tested it out with intense game like pokemongo but general use it dropped about 10% every hour and a half.
Standby time is good. However, practical use without the stamina mode and my battery is already at 60% at 12 noon. This is with Wifi on; bluetooth off, location off. It's dreadful but not the end of the world. Hopefully it will settle down with time.
Edit: My phone is 2 days old.

How do you get over 5 hours of screen on time? for me on average android OS and android system take up 20-25% of the battery.
Not only on this phone but on my previous Note 7 and S7 edge too!
@dpbg, @Gkstates , @junedkaka thank you for the quick reply. I can't believe sony reduced the battery life on the phone.
Do any of you know if there is wireless charging?

That 5 hr screen on time was on wifi and continous use almost over a period of 10 hours
I dont have a type C wireless charger to test it with so I'm not sure. I think battery is okay with general use. I text, check email, browse web throughout the day and it usually lasts me until 7 or 8 pm.

That's ok. i'm on office wifi all day with intermittent breaks. cell reception is also decent. So not sure why I'm getting only around 2 hours of SOT.
My battery life isn't a patch on my iPhone 6S+.
Web browsing over WiFi slays it.
How long does the battery take to charge? Mine seems really slow, plugged it in an hour ago, and its only gone up 2%
