Warranty replacement with Froyo - Captivate General

I just got another warranty replacement (about my 4th or 5th).
It came with Froyo.UCKB2
Interesting, since I never knew what the official release for Froyo was.
I haven't seen any one click installs for this package. Anyone?

UGH >>> Getting weird sig verify with reinstall pkgs for recovery

The official Froyo release was UCKB1. I've heard KB2 is the same as official, but with a different kernel. There is no kb2 anything, due to the lack of a kernel. If you contact ubershaximus, the two of you may be able to work together and come up with one.

any idea why i can't get into recovery? Weird sig errors on the reinstall pkgs screen

Signature verification failed? Sound like 3e recovery.

right, i'm trying to get my new phone to load clockwork out of 3e.
it's failing to install the update.zip. I'm getting a signature verification failed error

If you want it to flash a rom, I installed a kernel with cwm with odin, then flashed my rom. If you just want it to have it, no idea There are several threads on how to bypass it.

yep, found existz solution. should have searched.

Recently got an ATT warranty refurb with UCKB2
Sent from my Captivate

Ever thought to look in the stickies?
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G

Same issue here. Had to install a kernel to workaround as the above user mentioned!!!

Ive been looking through the stickies, and reading for hours. Things change so quickly that half the time I dont know if theres a newer better solution...
Now do I have to do anything before I flash a Kernal w/ cwm? Like root?
I had an older captivate and flashed several different roms, kernals themes modems etc., but since getting uckb2 I just keep bricking.
Can you recommend a kernal that would be safe to start off with?

[Q] it is possible to...

Sorry, I'm new to this so sorry if this seems dumb.
So i bought the phone from rogers and immediately updated to froyo 2.2 official release by rogers/samsung.
I read about all the hype online about rooting and custom roms so i decided to give it a shot.
I used the superoneclick method to root my phone and it was successful.
I then used "rom manager - clockworkmod" and created a restore file before i did any flashing to my phone.
after creating a backup, i went on and flashed to the cognition 3.04.
Now my question is. Am i ever able to get my phone back to its original rom, kernel, and modem? the reason i want to know is because i might need to get my phone replaced due to some technical issues with the phone.
Also, does the backup of my phone after rooting play a part in any of this? if so, how?
Im sorry if there is already a post like this one. Its just that i couldn't find the answer through all the hundreds of pages of threads and replies, so I thought it would be easier to post a here with my specific question. Thanks.

Do I not use that link in general, or just not to use the firmware given at the bottom? the steps are correct though, no?
also from my searching.
i can put my phone back to my backup point (just after rooting) through clockworkmod. Woud this change my rom back to stock from? how about kernel and modem and all that? would that all get reversed back to my backup point? meaning it will basically be a stock phone. But I think also read somewhere that my kernel and modem does not get changed back to rogers original one. is there a way to do it?
I then found this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846501
that says i need the original rogers rom for the captivate by the links there no longer work for download. Also on that thread, it was mentioned that the AT&T logo will still come up on startup, which would not be a good idea if i had to send my phone in for warrenty.
I then looked at : http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-I896
Here it tells me to flash to a i9000 before i reflash to a rogers firmware in order to remove the at&t logo. it also provides me with a link for the " Official Rogers Stock ROM ", but according to somebody on the first link i posted here, it isnt the "official rom"
Any ideas?
This is where I got the stock 2.2 file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905042.
Edit: I have flashed a bunch of times and have never got stuck with the AT&T startup after flashing back to stock with the odin file.

Thanks. So im assuming now that the only time my kernel and modem wont go back to stock is when i flash with CWM. correct?
I haven't tried using the CWM file in that link so I'm not sure if it contains the kernel and modem. As far as custom roms go most if not all come packaged with the kernel and modem of choice.
So.. When I do a "master clear" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989...
Would everything be wiped? I read somewhere that when you do a "wipe" from your settings it only clears user settings or something. What would a "wipe"
from the recovery menu do?
I flashed to a different rom today thinking it will help my battery issue. When i am flashing from one rom to the next, i do a restore back to my backup before i flash to a new rom. Is this the correct method? or am i supposed to wipe beforehand? The reason i ask is because this is my 2nd rom and my battery issue still seems to be there. I tried other methods of fixing hte battery but nothign seems to work. When i looked into root explorer, i see that there are a lot more files now everywhere, than when i first started. would some of them be from my previous rom? if so how do i remove them?

[Q] I896 and CM7 reverting

I would like to install CM7 from http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...f0000dangerous-test-releasecolor/#entry148754
But to restore back to Froyo, it says to use ODIN to do a restore with the re-partition option. I thought I read that the re-part option would brick a SGH-I896.
Is this correct? or am I just imagining it.
In other words, does the repartition option work properly on Rogers SGH-I896?
Thanks for any answers you guys give.
You want to run an experimental beta ROM for an i897 phone on your i896? Trying to find the fastest way to brick your phone?

I do not believe it will brick the phone. The board is an I897 with slight revisions. I was just wondering about the method used to go back to froyo. I am not a complete noob and am not worried about bricking to install the rom. Just going back.
But I do appreciate your input.
DO NOT USE PIT / RE- PARTITION ( the p in PIT is for partition )
i did that and on reboot had an error
E: cant mount dev/dbdata...
was STUCK. only option was to do ONE CLICK ODIN, even after flashing EVERY AVAILABLE rogers stock image, on the net and my own, I CANNOT GET RID OF ATT bootscreen without the cheap hack of replaceing the ATT image with the origninal (still named ATT boot).
the CM7 is still not ready, you will just be going back to what you have now,
WAIT for it to be ready.
Everything I've read on CM7 up to this point is that it is not yet ready for use other than for developers trying to fix its remaining bugs. A number of threads opened up on it over the past week have been almost immediately closed because of the potential to mislead people to try it and end up with bricked phones.
I flashed there and back with no problem. I did not use the re-partition option to install.
Well answered

Cm7 is largely stable with some bugs. If you do not read the known issues some funky stuff will happen. Speaking from experience ; ) it is everything the hype says it is. Running since the morning. My one concern is battery but I need to let it cycle a couple of times.

Been running CM7 since late January, and did some of the early dev work on porting it to the Captivate. I have an i896. Trust me, it won't brick it.
To op, there will never be a non-one click revert. CM7 changes the setup of the mtd blocks (basically the nand where the rom is installed), meaning you MUST repartition to go back to a Samsung rom. However, none of the Rogers images contain all of the rom, meaning if you repartition, you will be missing parts of the rom, and will just bootloop/be stuck in recovery.
Tl;dr: If you flash it, and want to revert, you must use one-click, and that won't change, even when it's at "stable".

Hello, coming from fascinate

I have been flashing my fascinate for a while now, looking to mod a captivate now. Im looking for something solid. Just looking thru your roms. I'm seeing that some people are having sleep of death on some roms. Also, I know nothing of your rom designations. Us on fascinate are on ec01 atm.. untill I'm more up to speed, what is a good, recent, official froyo, based rom? I prefer niceties, bln, voodoo stuffs, lockscreens, power options, acc batt, deodexed..
I will be doing more studys, but these 2 phones seem more diff than I thought they would be.. Voodoo and froyo are my bottom line..
Ps.. You guys are lucky to have so many custom roms.. I'm lost in your dev section.. however its a curse to new comers lol..

Our official 2.2 is KB1, and as far as I know the only one that supports the noise cancellation hardware. Cog 4.3.1 is a kb1-based rom (and Torch may also be based on kb1, or I may have just been drunk when I read the description many moons ago).
Everything else seems to be based off of the international i9000 roms with reoriented kernels. Try Serendipity, it's pretty decent if you don't mind the i9000 lineage.
We also have MIUI and CM7. MIUI is based off of CM7, and CM7 is based off of the Nexus S source.
You can also check out FireFly, It's based of Rogers 2.2 and comes with the Speedmod Kernel which doesn't have the sleep death issues. It's solid and reliable annnd it's updated every thursdays..what more can you ask for
I believe Fusion is KB1 based as well. KB1 is the only official Captivate Froyo. Personally, I recommend an i9000 ROM, as they're all 2.2.1 based. I'm running Inception right now, and having great success with it. It's only two days old, though, so probably not something you're ready to flash. Very stable and popular i9000 ROMS that I recommend are Serendipity and Continuum. My personal favorite is Precision, but if you go that route, download version 3.5, not 4.0, as 4.0 is still in alpha stage and has a few bugs. I hope my suggestions have helped in any way and welcome to the Captivate community!
Thanks for the responses,
Are you using cwm 3? Were still on cwm 2.5 on the fassy.. I know there was issues with edify scripting.. I'm looking into your beginners guide when I get on my pc later to see the differences in flashing. I feel a good amount of studying will be needed.. Also, do you have all in 1 odin to stock? And odin to stock froyo? Incase I create a bootloop.
1 more question. being that this is a gsm phone.. Do you still odin radio? Or are they included in the roms? I noticed that many rom posts here don't tell what radio to use, or what is compatible.
Thanks I advance, and sorry for picking brains

We call them modems, not radios.
You should look at the Onix kernel. It's great.
Continuum v4 unthemed looks alot like stock.

Are you trying to root so you can go to a custom ROM? If so, I wouldn't worry about rooting. I attached an update.zip that will get you CWM. Put the update.zip and the zip of whatever ROM you want to flash on your internal sdcard. Turn the phone off, hold both volume keys and the power keys. The AT&T logo should come up, keep holding the buttons. The logo should pop up again, now let go. it should go to recovery. Now select reinstall packages. The phone should reboot and go to recovery again. Select reinstall packages again and it should go to CWM. I'm assuming you should know how to flash a zip from here if you've had Fascinate experience. The flashing of the ROM will root your phone.
Hope this helps! If you have any questions, just ask.
Andromeda3 is based off the Georgio Armani Cappy. It's a 2.2 rom that has all the goodies you listed. The devs did a fantastic job on it. It's not updated very often because it doesn't need to be. It's fast, looks good, and has everything you want.

Most ROMs are not based on Captivate Froyo, because it sucks.
And Gingerbread ROMs are right around the corner. Just waiting on Samsung releasing the i9000 kernel source.

One-click, so need need for PDA and such. That's what I use, but it all depends on whether or not you have three button combo working. If that version doesn't work, just keep trying on both versions, switch USB ports each time.

we still use cwm 2.5.x.x because as was said 3.x.x.x have issues.
flashing to stock isnt needed anymore as all roms do a wipe, odin should only be used as a repair tool not a normal part of the process.
op just curious what was your phone running before you started odin? whoever posted the update.zip is right all this other stuff is just spinning your wheels. if it was on 2.1 then put that zip on the root of your sd reinstall packages twice and you will be in cwm, from there you can flash any rom. if you were on 2.2 then do a search for 3e recovery sighning and once you get that cracked follow the preceeding instructions
okay.. im all fixed now.. just to let everyone know, it was a computer issue (windows fail). and my usb was not talking correctly. a simple restart solved the issue.. i was worried i was in over my head, and i thank you all for helping. and i apologize for turning this page into a rescue center lol.
i will try that update zip now.. and im on my way to great roms im sure.. you are all a terrific bunch, and im glad to be a part of this forum

[Q] CWM Wont work and other aggravating problems- What can i do?

Hello, boy do I have a mishap. Well, anyway to begin I will say that I decided I wanted to root my phone to debloat it. So what I did, is downloaded the EE4 update and did the VooDoo V4 Kernel that flashes CWM and EXT4 and other junk. Well that all went great. I got it rooted and such but then just tinkering around I went into Rom Manager and told it to back up. WELL, when I did this the phone got locked on the SAMSUNG boot screen for hours and continued to refuse to boot. SO, I attempted to fix it by installing altered beast just to get the os running again and went into clockwork and backed it up. Then I went to the rooted ed1 to bring it back up to EE4 rooted and with the voodoo kernel and such but it refuses to open clockwork! The voodoo kernel changes filesystems and roots it and such but clockwork wont load. When I try to flash it in rom manager it says its succesful and then i go to reboot in recovery. It takes me to the Samsung Recovery 3e, I try to the update.zip, (yes i took the cwm recovery-update.zip and renamed it and through it in the sd card root) but all that happens is that a progress bar shows up for a split second then the android guy with the triangle and ! shows up and it does nothing. Help? I really need to back it up, preferably in the rooted ed1 but in ee4 will work to. Any ideas would be appreciated. I used odin v1.3 by the way. Im willing to try anything to get clockwork to boot so i can back it up. What do I do?
EDIT: Also, now when I go into 3e recovery, it complains saying " cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 " or something like that.
Did you read anything on this forum beforehand? Or just go link by link downloading files and deciding what to try on your phone?
Just saying..
Yeah, I did. Ive searched everywhere. I cant find anything about my problem. Ive looked at things that are close, hoping a solution can be found but nothing and no I wasnt just downloading files and spoon feeding them to my phone.. I just wanted to be able to debloat it.
Go search about Rom Manager and let us know what you find out...
I dont see how thats going to get me one step closer to solving my problem. Ive done the searching, now im asking.
Start w/ this one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100384
I can't tell where you are currently on your phone from reading that as it's to much text in one paragraph and it isn't put together in a logical sense and seems to jump around. I would look at the instructions for going to rooted EE4 in the Dev forum as that should get you to where you want to be with voodoo/cwm/rom
Instead of being a Forum Snob. If you know the answer, why don't you just help him out?
There's an abundance of confusing information on here and everyone uses acronyms. I too searched for hours on how to solve a similar problem and ended up having it taken care of for me. People join communities like this one for help. Not to get flamed for asking a question. It may be elementary to YOU but not everyone.
Thanks, for the care. Sorry about that if its jumbled, im frustrated with this because ive flashed the rooted ed1 about a billion times now, trying everything to get it functioning. Id be glad to try to explain again if that could help? Ah, yes. Well, I returned to the forum about installing the voodoo kernel. I followed the process word for word. But it just doesnt seem to want to work. Right now I just flashed it again back to the rooted ed1. Would I be able to put CWM on there at that point?

Oh and sorry if Im not getting this. Are you saying use a application that imnuts made? If so, could you be so nice to link it? Or a method he used? I looked for stuff but I didnt find anything other then what looks like a stock rom/kernel ed1 from him
I know how it is to be frustrated, but like they all said all of your questions have already been answered.
Here's my attempt to help:
Your problem lies in trying to flash CWR through ROM Manager, it currently doesn't play well with our phones. Word is that Koush (the creator) needs to update something for it to work with our phones. The bootloader is unlocked.
To flash imnuts' version of CWR, you'll need to use Samsung's leaked software called Odin - it's PC only. The alternative is Heimdall which is supposed to be cross-platform compatible, but the latest version is command-line only.
You have to find out if you've converted your system to EXT4 or if it's still RFS. That depends on if you have the Voodoo lagfix enabled or not. Check out the dev section and look for the titles that say [RECOVERY], [ODIN], [ROM], and/or something like "Get yourself to EE4 successfully".

Well, currently right now its rfs. Its the stock file system. What I was going to do, or did before, was to put it in download mode and flash the VoodooV4 Kernel. It roots the phone, and all that good stuff and is suppose to put the Voodoo recovery/cwm on there.
EDIT: Heres the proccess I followed before.

The recovery is a separate flash, both in odin. First the kernel, then Recovery.
Just follow here from the beginning, it should work for you:

Well I have good news. I would like to announce that I have successfully installed CWM. I guess my phone just didnt like the other one or something. But following this link,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657
I was able to get it installed. Now my only question is, I want this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092114 for my phone. But its not in a zip. Am I out of luck? Or do I not have to use CWM to install the kernel? Can I use odin and still be okay?

You do need Odin to load that, but i'm wondering why you want to? Did you install the PBJ kernel following the instructions from the other link?
If you want to go down this route, be sure to apply the SD Card fix as well - you'll find posts about it.

CWM will not install over the Android recovery 3e ...

I have a Samsung Infuse that at one time had JB on it.
I went back to Foyo for several months.
Now I want to try KK.
My Infuse is rooted but nothing will install - I get "failed to verify while file signature"
everytime I try to use the Android 3e recovery.
For the life of me I cannot get CWM installed on this phone.
How can it be done? I've tried Odin but don't work either.
Help
Carl
Also tried the "modded 3e recovey" copying a recovery file to /system/bin.
I can do this but still have no CWM as the recovery menu.
So, whats happening is that Android system recovery <3e> recovery menu cannot be replaced
nor will it let me install a zip file. Every time I try to install CWM or any other
zip file, I get:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed

I am not familiar with that method to install CWM. Usually one would flash an infused kernel via ODIN. Are you AT&T or Rogers? That would determine your method.
On mobile now so myself looking it up is difficult, but what you need should be in either the General or Development forum. Try searching for "infused CWM".
Sent from my LG-D520 using XDA Free mobile app
Update:
Easiest method would probably be option D:

This will give you Stock Gingerbread with root, and red CWM. What kind of problems were you having with Odin?

Your diagnosis was spot on.
What I had done when I bricked my Samsung Infuse months ago was that I had used PHONE_UCLB3.tar.md5 for PHONE selection in ODIN. I had JB running but the performance was poor and messing with it
I had bricked my phone. Then when I was able to recover back to Froyo, I said f*ck it and quit messing with it.
Doing what I did several months ago to unbrick my Infuse locks in the Android recovery menu.
Yesterday I was experimenting and used option C to get it working now -- i.e. using I997UCLB3-CWM-root-deodex-extras.tar.md5 for PHONE. I suppose either option C or D would be OK as those provide the red recovery menu for Froyo. I was scimming over all the various texts and had missed the details.
Boy this stuff can be complicated unless one stays with it - AND READ EVERYTHING CAREFULLY.
I'd made a lot of notes when I did this months ago but still it was vague.
Now its coming back to me and I think I'll start hanging out here to learn more about these ROMs.
Not knowing which is better, I chose to install Carbon Kit Kat nightly on my Samsung Infuse. I noted that Bean Stalk did not have any
recent versions and just assumed there was more activity with Carbon. Is Carbon as good as it gets or are there better choices????
Thanks
Carl

It's all subjective, but with the time I used it I think Carbon is as goods as it gets.
There's CyanFox, which I didn't try, which is still quite young. CM11 and BeanStalk have been getting updates, it's just their key developer is absent right now. But there is a bug with CM11 and BeanStalk that leaves ADB unable to work. If you plan on using ADB, I would stay away from those two. Other than that, I did like the BeanStalk experience when I used it, but in the end wished I switched to Carbon earlier.

Disable voodoo lagfix and you should be good to go. If not, try downloading a different kit Kat Rom (one with a working link).
