[Q] Sensation randomly turns off (wrong battery calibration?) - HTC Sensation

Hi guys,
I somehow thought that calibration of my battery should be at a very low battery level (3 percent), and after that I've got some problems with my battery.
My phone now randomly turns off, even when the battery isn't empty. Often it's possible to just turn it on again with the power button, and when it's booted, it's all normal again. But sometimes it thinks the battery is at 3% (or some other low value) while before it turned off it was on (for example) 50%. When I reboot then (by myself), my battery widget shows it's at 50% again.
I recalibrated my battery afterwards a couple of times (this time at 100% battery), but it still turns off randomly, so one good recalibration (including the full discharge) isn't really possible, because my phone turns off.
Is my battery completely dead and should I order a new one? Or maybe it's possible to use somebody's batterystats.bin file? Or is there any other fix?
Thanks in advance

I'm having this same issue. Posted in general Sensation last night but haven't gotten any replies. Hopefully someone can figure it out.

Did you flash a custom kernel? Unity v8 is doing the same thing for me during certain processes, so I went back to v7. Works like a charm

Mine have happened on stock kernels.

Nope, I've never flashed any custom kernels. If anybody knows something, please let us know

have you tried wiping your battery stats?

Either wipe stats like he said or try battery calibration. Make sure battery is fully charge if you can before using it. Link here> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16415095 or just search battery calibration on market.

i had same problems, i uses battery calibration, recovery option wipe batt stats.
i reflashed stock kernal and since then no problems at all.
iv gone from 4 hrs batt life bk to 16

Got the same probs. Using ardhd 3.0.1 with stock. Had the same problems on previous roms. Haven't gotten any replies either. I've tried wiping my battery stats when fully charged, didn't help. Wondering if I should try to revert to stock and see if it disappears.
Any of you guys hade any luck fixing this?

I just recently experienced this issue as well with stock Rom with perm root. I switched to ardHD 3.0.3 and haven't had issues yet...will report if there is anymore issues with new setup.

I went back to complete stock 3 days ago. Stock ruu and s-on. Was fine the first day and yesterday. But tonight it started up again. I'm debating if I should just buy an extended battery or go to tmobile and hope they'll exchange my phone even tho its past 30 days

hmmm...thats curious, the only time i ever experienced something even remotely close to that was when i was running stock w/ android 2.3.3, it didnt seem to like our hardware very much

I'll also try with ardhd 3.0.3. If that fails it's s-on and off to htc for warranty

So I got myself a Sensation XE at the weekend, left it saturday night, was off Sunday morning. Left it Sunday night, was off this morning.
So I'm assuming I have the same issue as you guys have been having.
Is there any way to fix it without rooting/flashing or buying a new battery?
As if I need to do any of those, I might as well just send it back for a replacement. Which I don't really want to do as it'll take days/weeks.
Thanks!

When I contacted htc about the problem they just sent a new battery. I didn't have to return the phone

You must have spoken to an agent in a good mood, the one I got told me to send it back to the service provider.

Bummer. I bought mine without a contract. I said that I tested with another battery that I borrowed from a friend and that worked fine. Try that
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio using XDA App

hey there.
I have exactly the same issues.
Tried out buying a new battery like the Anker Battery 1900mAh.
This worked absolutely fine for about 2 weeks.
But now im having the same problems again.
Now i ordered this Mugen Power 1800mAh Battery.
Hopefully resolving that problem now for good.
I will report as soon i tested the Bat for a few weeks.

holy thread necromancy batman!

Phone crash with camera flash

I've noticed that when I take a picture with my inspire 4g, with the flash turned on, the entire phone shuts down right away, but when it's turned into automatic, it works fine, has anyone else has this problem, or know of a solution?

Need a few more details. What ROM, mods, etc. Folks here like to help, but we need to know what you may have modded on the phone.
I'm running stock 2.3.3, rooted, but no custom roms.

That's odd. I have never heard of that on a stock ROM. But maybe someone else here has. Good Luck
You have a bad or shorted flash led.

You should try wiping everything and installing a custom Rom or a rooted stock Rom and see if problem persists, could be a software issue. There are plenty of stock rooted gb Roms buried a few pages back in dev forum.
Check my sig. Stock roms. There is a rooted gingerbread PD98img, stock. I think it's the 3rd one, iirc.
With the phone plugged into the charger take a pic with flash on and see if your phone resets. Could be a battery issue.

That would be my recommendation. If you knew someone with another inspire you could try their battery. Actually your battery should be under warranty. If your phone is stock looking then you could probably take it to an ATT store and let them check it out and get 1 for free. Or even a call to 611 ATT support might get you a new battery for free. Just tell them it won't hold a charge and the flash causes your phone to reboot and you tried a friends battery and it fixed the issue. ATT has very understanding customer support.
It definitely sounds like a battery issue. I had a very similar issue. My phone would shut off at random times, and one thing that caused it was the camera flash. I picked up a new HTC battery on eBay for like $14, and it runs like a dream! If you cant fork over the money for the HTC brand battery, there are lots of cheaper chinese batteries for like $2 a piece. They would be good to just test and see if the battery is the issue if you cant find a buddy that could let you use a battery for troubleshooting, before you buy an HTC battery.
Absolutely! the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. A new battery solved the issue. If you have a warranty/protection plan call up At&T and they'll take it from there.
Man, I love forums! I was just having this problem this week! I guess my brutal punishment to my battery over Winter break has cost me (I was running the phone down to 0% multiple times a day). Time to get a new battery.

Digging into the problem
I was going crazy with this problem! I wonder now what is the problem with the battery, because mine it seems like it keeps current like a good battery. Does anyoane has any "hardware-electrical" explanation?
Anyway, at least I have one solution and I am partially happy with it.

I'm assuming when you say it "keeps current" you have been using a current widget. The camera flash puts a heavy load on the battery. On an older battery, it may look like it's fine at idle or doing simple tasks, but it can no longer handle the tough tasks.

It doesnt happen when i disable bluetooth and push mail.
Need to find out which one is causing the shutdowns.

Sounds like a hardware issue. Either battery is bad, or the maincard. Often water/shock damage.
Try a Anker battery, it wont set you back many dollars anyways.

I had random shutdowns - There seem to be a few threads around about it, some suggest repartitioning and reformatting the SD card (which seemed to work for me) and some go for some odd solutions like sticking a bit of card at the base of the battery to push it against the pins a bit more solidly.

Battery life on stock ICS...

Maybe I repeat someone's question???
But, haven't seen any battery posts for recent T-MO ICS update, seen some for custom ROMs thou...
I believe we got a power hog... Charged that thing to 100%.. 2 hours later it was at 85%, basically doing nothing.... couple of calls. Using display at 75% on manual setting. Oh.. Using Anker 1900mA battery.
If you ran in to the same problem, please confirm. What other settings to play with to lower the power consumption???
Thanks!!

Thanks guys for your input.
I have my Anker battery for as long as I have my Sensation, 9 month.
I did cycle it 3 -4 times initially and it gave me a great life on GB.
Yesterday I looked through some settings and made changes.
Got Auto sync off (manual mode), some other changes that (don't remember now, getting older...LOL) keep phone looking for services, I believe location. Charging now and will see how it holds.
Will report if there any progress.

Tried any Kernels?
I was to impatient to wait for the TMO ICS update so I slapped on a custom ICS rom but with this kernel by Faux123: (agh, won't let me link up until I have more posts...just search his nick and his posts)
The battery life is insanely good with the Intellidemand...
Check into seeing if it is compatible with your version, maybe by emailing/msging Faux123.

Im sorry but i dont really rely on a kernel for battery life i have flashed tons of em and let them stabilize and never really seen the difference no offence meant to the dev's of course...
Sometime you just need to Re-Calibrate your battery or do a new fresh install which works quite good..

Most people with issues on Stock ICS end up just factory resetting. It tends to fix most issues.

I have had no problem with battery to be honest. Actually, before I would have to charge my phone every 9 hours. Now for some strange reason I get 36 hours of batter life. Anyone else have this "problem". lol

Phone shutdown unexpectedly

Please guys I need help. My phone was running smoothly with no issues before. Then I finished surfing the net after that the phone keeps on shutting down at a setting interval when am in the middle something or not. I have done some things I know to bring it back to its proper working conditions but still, no improvement and I have restored to the original backup system software because I was running on custom rom before the incident and it still happening.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda app-developers app
Tried another battery, ejecting your sd and SIM cards or if the shut down happens with a charger plugged in? If yes then do a super wipe, flash fresh firmware and ROM then test before restoring anything, check all MD5 before flashing.
If it still shuts down with fresh everything then maybe a hardware fault, return to stock and do a warranty repair.

Try THIS fix. Maybe your battery is loose
I have not tried a new battery I will do that and see what happens next. Because I also suspect the battery, I was having 87% battery life when the phone shutdown unexpectedly and I powered it on again the battery became 13%, I think the battery is the culprit here. I will try what you said and see.

Strange of the battery to go down so fast. Yes you should probably try another battery
Ad he said try different battery . My mugen battery was behaving like that then my device turned black and I couldn't boot, no charge light was detected! I switched batteries back to Anker now my device is running fine. Strange because the mugen was a new battery but sometimes this happens. So yes definitely try another battery.

Yeah!!! You guys are great I appreciate the ideas you guys contributed. What I did is I scratch the surface of the battery and attached a small piece of paper on the back of the battery to enable it stay firmly in the housing. Since then it has not shut down and the battery is even lasting longer now. I am still observing it and I will bring a feedback later.

Should I say BYE to this battery?

Hi, its been a year since I am in this rooting process and changing Roms and kernels but for few days i'm noticing an issue not only on VIPER 1.60 (currently using it) but also on others. My phone takes long time to charge and the battery bar is all messed up. Shows different readings before and after restart and all the battery just drains with speed of light? Need advice, thanks
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda premium
As a last step before getting a new battery, probably you could try placing a paper card or credit card between the battery and the back cover to see if there is an issue with battery positioning. I resolved similar issue with my phone this way.
If your battery is draining that fast, yes I would definitely look into buying another. My stock battery was awful, finally I broke down and got another, I'm very glad I did! It makes a big difference to have a good extended life battery! If I we're you, yes I would by another battery. Hope this is helpful. Best wishes.

Sometimes the problm is with the machine inside the phone. If that machine is malfunctioning then it will also make your new battry dead.
So confirm it first.
