I have been looking very closely at the VS gTablet for school. However, I am concerned about functionality versus a tablet PC (laptop convertible). Can anyone shed some light in both areas (experiences); because I am stuck deciding between a Lenovo 201 and the VS gTab. Also, is it possible to use a mouse and keyboard or a stylus (for note taking / drawing) on the gTab? Thanks!
I'm really looking for something to be able to take written notes with, record lectures, access internet for downloading notes and other materials.
Based on some of the research I have done; I have the following pro's and con's to decide from:
Lenovo 201:
Pro's: Comes with a digitizer pen, has more storage space, easily convertible, and works right out of the box.
Con's: Battery life, weight, and price.
VS gTab:
Pro's: Android OS, light, decent battery life, very portable, and price.
Con's: No digitizer pen, space not as upgradeable (correct me if I'm wrong), and needs to be modded to get full functionality.
Feel free to include anything I may have missed. Thanks in advance!
Go with the Lenovo, if you really want it for Pure school, and some basic functionallity
Well, the Lenovo may be out of the question after their sale ends tonight. It's too bad, get a $2800 tablet pc for $1600. I haven't received my student funds yet. If Lenovo doesn't have a sale like this later, I think the VSgTab will be the way to go.

+1 it will fit in your budget
http://www.androidostablet.com/android-tablet/android-tablet-alu.html
has anyone tried these... seem good to me, i dont own one though.
It may, but it is also more expensive than the VS G Tab or the Archos 101. When I buy electronics, I tend to lean towards the powerhouses versus the mid to low end stuff. Not saying the galaxay isn't one of those; but the CPU that the GTab and Archos 101 offer are really nice!
But, at this point, it is a decision between the VS GTab and the Archos 101. I did find a capacitive stylus made by Pogo Sketch (broader head pen type) and DAGi (finer pen type) that should work for taking notes with. The biggest problem I face atm is the lack of stores in my area that have active demo models.
is there a bluetooch gamepad and case for htc desire? kind of transform it into a portable console? the htc desire on top and it's gamepad at the bottom?
I'm actually looking for the same thing! If anyone knows, please inform us!
It'd be nice, but as far as I know, there's nothing like that (being sold, anyway). I've been looking for one myself since not long after I got mine, which was a while back now.
There's a couple controllers I think being sold in marketplace, modded wii classic controllers. The wii controller seems best suited for it, I think it'd be great if someone made a custom case to house these 2 together
for me, wiimote looks too big for it? want a portable gamepad... msi bgp100 looks nice and quite portable but does not seem to fit the htc desire
it should just fit it, but that one's made for using portrait, not very good for almost every game really. if they made one for landscape mode games, it'd be perfect
iControlPad? http://icontrolpad.com/
Works over bluetooth, but currently only fits small iPhone sized phones, but you might JUST get away with a desire. Their forum has some posts on what fits and one member posted a load of images of phones fitting/not fitting in the pad.
Says in stock and shipping too!
EDIT Found the posts with the pictures showing what fits. Not a massive selection, but something you have might be comparable.
http://boards.openpandora.org/index...fit-clamp-set-1/page__view__findpost__p__9379
the icontrolpad looks nice! this the kind of case i am looking for!!! you think the desire will fit in it?
edit: don't think it will fit... Droid Incredible and Sanyo Zio are slightly too large and they are 117.5 and 116mm wide respectively and they are slightly too large for the icontrolpad while desire is 119mm.. do won't fit
Well its only 4mm longer than an iPhone. They will be making new clamps for larger phones so it's only a matter of time.
I've ordered one anyway. I don't have a Desire though, Nexus One and SGS (which has no hope of fitting in clamp set #1). Should be able to test fit one though, a fellow at work has one.
yup even if it's too tight, you can try the tip given there

I am buying an android tablet as an x-mas gift. I have 300 dollars to spend. There is no one better to ask then the awesome people at XDA!
I saw best buy has the toshiba thrive for 299$ on black friday but the chances of me getting it are slim to none.
I would like to know the best online deals for the best tablet possible or if it is exceptional a in store price. (staples, best buy, frys).
I have been looking around but i dont really know whats what! thanks ahead of time!
The Kindle Fire, it's now rooted and soon there will be custom ROMS, it has very good intergration with Amazon's marketplace and you get free stuff when you get it. GAPPS are also availible at this moment so you can simply download a launcher if you dont like the Built in version of Android.
The kindle fire would be great but the person i am giving it to is not much of a techie. She wouldnt be able to keep up with updating the rom and so on. +she really wants a front facing camera so she can video chat.
Then the Toshiba Thrive is a great option for her. It has a 2MP front facing (Better than any front facing camera out now) and all the slots/ports on it makes it amazing: Full sized usb, sd and HDMI with Micro USB and Headphone Jack. Honeycomb is very user friendly as well.
Why didn't you just search Amazon Shopping for it?
Also on Black Friday you can pick up a Transformer for $250

yep' Kindle Fire seems to be a good deal atm
I eyed the kindle fire and thrive for a while but I decided it's worth saving a bit more for the premium of the transformer prime when it comes out in a couple days.
If you can't wait and you need to stick to that budget, I'd go for a kindle fire.
Shes a must for a camera. She has no way to take photos and that was a huge deal for her.
kindle fire has to camera front or back. The hp touch pad is a fantastic device great price point and an awesome amount of storage but i am an android fanboy and i will only purchase a google product. webos just wont cut it IMO.
I would personally recommend the asus transformer which i just got about a month and a half ago.
I was not really sure either. I ended up getting the xoom at first only to return it within a few days. The screen was and is a real letdown with the xoom when it comes to movies and photos. Really washed out poor colors and contrast.
Now the transformer is awesome in more or less every way. Check out the many glowing reviews online to see for yourself. I choose it over its closest rival the galaxy tab 10.1 for one reason. They are more or less identical specs wise. But the transformer has SD memory extension which is priceless almost.
The screen is absolutely gorgeous on the transformer. Overall performance is all around fantastic also.
On a side note..i was waiting for either one of samsungs 7.7 or 7.0 plus tablets but they never came on this side of the waters so far. I was convinced a 7 inch tab was for me but ive been very happy with the 10.1 inch form factor.

Oh and the transformer has a very good 5mp back camera and 1 mp front camera also. .
And the laptop dock which you can buy separately also turns it into a very useful and functional laptop form factor...its not a necessity but its a nice option to have.

This is just a suggestion but you can get a rooted gtablet in excellent condition withbox paperwork and all on ebay for around $200.00.I own one which was my first tablet as well and you can not get a more well rounded tablet for the price in my opinion, and I did say my opinion,I am sure I am about to stir it up.lol.the one I got looked like it comefrom the factory,so it will not look used, and just take a look at the info on it,oh,I tookalook and there is several on ebay that will come like new, there is one with the factory screen protector still on it and says, never used only opened to root.anyway,I amnonody to listen too but I do speak from the great experience that I am having with mine.I hope you find some good deals, whatever approach you take. Good luck.

iLuv Executive Case w/BT Keyboard.
I'm ordering one of these today and will update when I get it. You can remove the keyboard if you want and it seems like a fair price compared to the Samsung OEM keyboards.
Edit:
I guess it would help if I included a link, sorry. Here you go:

Let us know how it is. I keep hoping that Targus will make a version of their Versavu iPad2 Keyboard case for the Galaxy Tab 8.9. I know a couple people who have one for their iPad and it is a nice keyboard case.

I agree, please do let us know how it is once you receive it. I am contemplating purchasing it. Frankly, if I was being honest, one of the major factors of this case that is keeping me from getting it is the "iLuv" branding on the clip. I don't think this was a necessary move, but hey at least they made a case with a removable keyboard!
As for Targus' iPad version of the case, it looks extremely nice.
Alot more companies REALLY need to expand out and develop more Samsung 8.9 cases (there aren't that many options).
I will update if I ever receive it. I have to call Amazon customer service. I'm not sure why, I am being told it is on back order, even though if you look at the site today, it says they are in stock. This kind of stuff just completely aggravates me.

Hmm, on that note, I think I'll just stick with my original pick and go this route:

I might look at that option as well. After arguing with Amazon for twenty minutes, I told them to cancel the order and refund my card. Makes no sense why my product is on back order when they still as of today show they are in stock from 6 different merchants.
How about this bluetooth case? Looks similar and cheaper cost wise?

Well in case anyone orders one of these let me save you the trouble.
The keyboard is excellent, but the case is sized for a 10" tablet. The pictures on the Amazon.com website are misleading because they show the case and the tablet being perfectly sized together, but now I'm quite sure they are pics of the 10.1 model. Basically it fits fine, but you end up with about 1" of empty space all around the 8.9 (yuck).
http://www.amazon.com/iLuv-Executive-Detachable-Bluetooth-iSK914BLK/dp/B005JK62SU
They sell these things for the iPad, Galaxy 10.1 and a few others with just the pocket that the tablet slides into being custom to each model. So if you don't mind carrying around a 10" case with a really nice BT keyboard then you might like this one. Like I said the keys are really high quality and feel nice to touch type with. I'm sending it back for a refund.
Just curious,
Iluv makes 2 type of keyboard
BLK14 is 8.9" and BLK12 is for 10.1". Pretty sure the one in amazon is 8.9"?
I would like to get some opinion from you guys....
I am a startup developing a new kind of mobile device that combines a phone and tablet - putting a 7" screen on a less than 5" phone body. (It is not like the Galaxy Note, where the size is fixed.)
SO when you just want to make calls, check SMS and emails, just use the "phone mode" with a 4"+ screen.
When you want to surf web, watch videos/photos, transform it into a 7"-screen tablet.
Now my question is about the potential market for this device, as it seems that no company is creating a device like this, I am worried if there's no market for it.
a) For those of you carrying two devices (a phone and a tablet), are you feeling a bit inconvenient, annd would you like to have this device?
b) For those of you carrying only a phone, would you like to have a bigger screen, perhaps 7", while retaining the same portability?
c) Would you still buy a 10" tablet after you have this device? (assuming you already have a laptop)
Your help will be very much appreciated!
the first thing that came to mind upon reading this post is the asus padfone.
i do carry the 2 devices (S2 + TF101), and IMO it isn't really a big inconvenience, thus i might not be that interested. Unless it comes with a unique feature / selling point?
cheers.
if the tablet could make calls and i could pair a Bluetooth headset to it, i would get it. maybe it would stop me from texting and driving if it was 10 inch
I see no market for it. Some will buy it for what it is but not enough to make profit or even break even. Try focussing resources on let's say the body of the Droid Razr with an edge to edge screen, custom ROM that gets rid of the touch buttons of the bottom of the device so that can be more room for screen. I would buy something like that.
Or how about a smart-watch that can sync with any tablet to become a secondary display.

Didn't they already do this? And if I recall it kinda flopped... Not being negative, but I think people are used to carrying around a bunch of gadgets...

Thanks for your reply.
There are some aspects of Padfone that we don't think it will be a market success:
1. You still need to carry the 10" screen, and it is not as portable as a 4+" phone 2. When the phone is inside tablet, you'll need a headset to receive and make calls
Anyway our product is not in compete with padfone, although we have something in common - to combine devices from different categories. The key difference, besides the size, is that we emphasize on PORTABILITY; while they probably emphasize on versatile performance.
Our device is small and light and easily slip into pocket, yet comes with a beautiful 7" screen.
BTW, we think the combination of devices (our device + laptop/ultrabook) is more reasonable than (Padfone + laptop/ultrabook), because Padfone size is already very similar to laptop, and almost everyone already has a laptop.

Do you mean Sony's Tablet P?
However, since there is a bezel between the two screens, it cannot be seen as a one screen tablet when unfolded. In fact this is one of the main reason why it gets poor reviews and market reactions (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-03-21/what-was-sony-thinking-with-tablet-p-rich-jaroslovsky.html). The bezel is simply annoying.
Our startup have found a way to remove the bezel.
Yes people now used to carry around many gadgets, because currently we have no choice
I love the idea of the padfone...4 inch phone during the day, 10 inch phone when at home.
If you have something to offer please let me know, as of know i am seriously looking at the padfone to be my next phone.

Tablet s Phone
I really dont understand why Tablets dont incorporate phones, I own a Dell Streak Mini 5, (best phone Ive ever owned) also a sony tablet s.
Both brilliant devices but most of the pros are duplicated by one or the other,
Dell streak, android device, good general purpose but screen too small for word processing or watching vids, not to mention the small onscreen keybord.
Tablet s, android device, good for all things android but no phone.
I dont follow the logic that there would be no market for a tablet device with a phone, I carry a phone and I carry a tablet I would far rather only carry one, i.e. the tablet with a phone in it, I use a blue tooth earpiece for all my phone/music/audio books so its not as if Ive got it stuck to my ear all the time, in fact the phone never comes out unless i want to use an app.
So the answer for me is a resounding YES device of that nature.
This is a great idea. Today's smartphones have all this horsepower but what good is it if the tiny screens make it a chore to get anything done. I'm having difficulty imagining how one would go about incorporating an additional big screen on a phone, but if you can do a clean job at it, I believe it will be success. By clean, I mean the screens should be good quality either glass or matte, not some flimsy folding ****.

Yes we are not using folding screens.
I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note exactly for this reason.
The screen is big enough for non-phone usage but small
enough to fit inside a pocket to carry around like you would
carry around a phone. It's already 5.4" so 7" is not that much
larger, you'd better have a real compelling reason for your
device in order to convince people who would otherwise
pick the Note.
Cool Idea
I don't know of your resource base, but have you seen the new translucent material they have demoed for new tablets. That would make your product something that would stand apart. They demoed the material at one of the electronic shows this year.
