I just wanted to get the idea of how many people use their phone as their MP3 player. I have an iPod Touch 3rd Gen (32GB) that I am thinking about selling, I haven't used it since I got my phone. The Touch is still a pretty powerful device to me and not sure if I want to let it go (I put it on craigslist for $130 and have been getting replies out the y-zoo).
It's def my portable mp3 player. I don't have a touch mp3. I have a shuffle and an old samba. Both are never used now. It would be nice to have a second device so I can let my wife FB and Angry birds on her own device. I am assuming one can do that with the touch. But if you have no need and have room for cash in your pocket maybe selling is the right choice. Good luck.
Ive been using my phone as an MP3 for years. i remember when I had a razr i would have the phone, an mp3 and a pda to lug around, NO MORE!
If you would like to dedicate your phone to music I would suggest UberMusic from the guy who made Launcher Pro. Its got a great Metro skin that makes it look and act like a zune.
I use my smartphone as an mp3 player. I don't have an iPod, and see no reason for one. My daughters on the other hand, have both, smartphones & iPod Touches. They carry both devices everywhere. Kids.
I said bye bye to MP3 players when I got my first smartphone.

Totally use it all the time, too much hassle to carry around MP3 player, camera, and phone. It also awesome when you got the unlimited skip, no commercial pandora app.

With this phones wolfson dac and flac support it is a fantastic sounding device. Sold all my other potable players only use the charge. Also plays all movies no conversion needed. Also if you can use win amp to sync as well.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

I definitely use my phone as a mp3 player. With Google Music and my 32 gig memory card, I basically have more available music than I know what to do with.

Make that +2.
Absolutely.
Napster was one of the main reasons I moved to Android. LTE + Napster is fantastic.
I would like to. But, unfortunately, the head unit in my car does not recognize my phone as a storage device.
If I could get my phone to do that, I would have no use for my iPod touch.

I need to upgrade my current phone and I was wondering what any of you recommended if you have any experience with the windows phone 7 phones vs. their android models. I'm 16, I text a lott it's probably what I use my phone for most and swype is a godsend for me, but I need an mp3 player really badly and I would like my phone to function as one as well, also I want to get a nice case for it so that if I drop it a few times it doesn't break. I tested out the captivate for a week and it was amazing, but I'm into changing the roms and all that fancy stuff so if I did get a windows phone 7 do they have the ability to put android on it and vise-versa, is windows mobile 7 laggy like windows mobil 6.5 on my old fuze?
Some models I'm specifically looking at are the HTC Surround (win mo7), Samsung Captivate, Samsung Focus, LG quantam.
I can get each phone for about $150 so price isn't really an issue.
Guess it really depends... Have you been naughty or nice this year?
If you absolutely have to have swype, go for the captivate. WP7 doesn't have it and there's no indication that it will in the future as of yet. It is really easy to type on the Focus's screen (doing it right now), but if you really like swype, that's where you're at.
The Zune software in WP7 is great for playing mp3's. Don't really know what Android has, but I can say that the Zune software is nice.
No, WP7 hasn't been cracked open to flash custom roms, or run Android. If you really wanna do things like that, go for the captivate. However, as ardent a flasher as I have been with my Tilt2, it was all to get it to run right. WP7 is effortlessly fast right out of the box. The captivate needs to be tweaked to remove the lag and stutters. There is no lag on my Focus.
Merry Christmas!

I'm going to the AT&T store today, I'll probably test demo both of the samsungs and make my decision in there.
go for an iphone 4. at&t and iphone 4 works well together.

I'd go for a Focus. The new Motorola phone looks really nice too and its cheaper, mid-pack. I forget what it's called though.
Go for samsung captivate.
I have both an iphone 4, and a captivate.
If you want something thats going to work perfect out of the box get the iphone 4 and an ottorbox case.
If you want a real phone, get the captivate.

MP3/Music: The 5.1 stereo in the built in music player sounds really good. The music player that comes with the stock Captivate is comparable to any of the music player apps you'll find.
For texting, you'll probably want to install SMS Popup, or Handscent.
It takes great pictures and video - BUT has no built in flash.
Mine is rooted, OCLF lag fix, and hacked for sideloading apps. Also Titanium Backup on a rooted device will allow you to remove the AT&T bloatware. (I recommend freezing apps for a week before removing them - just in case other apps are dependent on them)
I really love my Captivate. I might be a lucky one because I've never had any GPS lock problem, random shutdown problem etc that many others have complained about. Mine runs EXCELLENT!
My question is Why are you going for AT & T specifically? Why not Verizon or any other?

That's the same price my little brother told me they are in stores. That price I listed was for online. Either way, lot of phone for that price I'd say.
And I also noticed that ATT sells refurbs for $10, but are out of stock.
Call At&t 611. They have different stock than the website and usually have the phone you want when the website sells out. Prices may be.different though.

"winamp is a battery hog"
So which one suits your needs?
To my way of thinking it is a "must" that is can read music and album art from the MicroSD
As nothing worst then having to reload music each time you flash a new rom. Plus not be a batt hog.
Personally at the moment I am using winamp pro, as I have been using it on the desktop for years
And old habits die hard..
But I do like the carousel of Google Music app. But I am finding it didn't play nice with the MicroSD pickup, and in that
It will only show a few albums.
Open to suggestions and comments on what others use.
So I hand the floor to other users to let us know their preferences.

I hate being "that guy" but if you do a quick search for "best music player" in this subforum you will find a few older threads discussing this. I think PowerAMP is pretty popular. I personally also like ³ ("cubed") which has pretty cool features. Then there's the N7 player which has a very unique UI. At the end of days it's a matter of preference
FC..
Understand the thought pattern..and search is a good thing.. also I did spend a good 10 mins scrolling back through posts..
but we also have come along way since some of those threads..
What I would like to know from music buffs is how is the batt life now on ICS with the new programs.
And which new ones haven hit the market that are better then a year ago..
So for my own experience. Today I did a road trip, had Winamp playing and teethering for about 6 hours..batt was down to about 44% by the end of it.

+1 i've tried a few but i keep returning to poweramp
EDIT: I am speaking solely from the standpoint of an audiophile.. if you prefer convenience and the ability to modify album art, id3tags, etc. then PowerAmp has proven to be a little better.. PlayerPro is good with the album art too.. possibly better.. imho it's a toss up between those two (PowerAmp and PlayerPro for music organization and customization).. if you only care about the actual music that is playing then Neutron is your friend.. it has professional grade 32-bit audio rendering.. and is really made for high end devices.. our "trannies" (still love that) would certainly meet those criteria..
Neutron MP hands down.. there is literally no comparison.. you might have to tweak it for a while, but it is unbelievable.. I will be in heaven when SuperCurio has Voodoo stable in ICS.. i might switch all of my audio work onto my tablet when Voodoo is ready..

Isn't Neutron amazing? I love it! It takes a while to get used to, but it is hands down the best player on the market.
As far as PC apps go, I love Foobar2000. It's another app that can take a long time to get used to, but you can do amazing things with it. Head-fi.org has some pretty good info on it as well as setups you can download.
Also, to compliment those apps, you need some good cans. I actually prefer earbuds, but the point is the same. I'm not sure how much money you have, but I will assume that you are like me and you like nice things, but don't necessarily love spending entire paychecks on them. To that end, here's a nice brand not many people know about for headphones - Nuforce (http://www.nuforce.com/hp/reviews-headphones.php). Grab a set of those (V-Moda and Shure are awesome too) and use them with Neutron or Foobar2000. You will hear sounds you never knew existed.
Cheers..
I just use Google's Play Music and stream from the cloud.

It's the best and should get advertised alot more people need to know about it!!
Also on the website it mentions 64-bit real time rendering aswell as the 32 but im guessing this is only for devices with neon???? Would love to have that on the tf but 32 is also great.
I did use Foobar2000 for awhile but the UI I just could not live with. I tried winamp meh wasn't that great then tried Music bee currently im on music bee because I cannot for the life of me find anything that sounds better with a nice UI.
I contemplated J-River and the J-Player plugin but could not justify the price of either.
I currently use a pair of sennheiser headphones and was considering a pair of klipsch headphones but they where to expensive for now.
Just had a look at the NE-700x Nuforce headphones and a couple reviews they seem like an amazing set for the price. Are these the ones you have?
Also there is only one distributor in NewZealand and his website does not show the 700's I will ask if he can import but if not I may have to ask you or someone else if I can send money for them plus shipping just to get them to my country.
EDIT: NZ IS USELESS!!!!!! I spoke to the nz importer who does not stock them
Thanks

I actually got mine from Amazon. I believe they come from NuForce, but Amazon ships them. They came pretty quickly too so I'm guessing Amazon keeps a couple laying around. And yes, I got the NE-700x. From what I hear they are all good though. They have a $25 pair on Amazon that are pretty good too.
Here's the 700x link:
http://www.amazon.com/NuForce-NE-70...NDDG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335582059&sr=8-1
And yeah, Foobar is not the greatest from a UI perspective. I have a bunch of sweet skins for it from deviantart. They actually do wonders for it. I love that player, but when I get a new laptop or new headphones I don't like spending hours tweaking everything so it's just right. There is literally too much you can do with it!
Anyway, good luck with the search and PM me if you need anything...
Cheers..

+1 the lack of expandable memory and no removable battery is what drove me away from this device and finished concluding my mind set on the amaze.
I have a 32gb SD and I'm already over 16gb and too me, drop box is an inconvinience and really do not trust it.
My bother had the phone for 2 days. He work for tmobile. And it have great battery life. He went a whole day with usage and at the end if the he had over 30 something percent life. And he talk on the phone like a school girl. I myself have a 8gb card but since I have a mp3 It's never filled. I just use it for games and back up. so the phone is perfect for me.
The non-removable battery is a little off-putting, but I think I might overlook the 16GB storage limit. Music is what takes up most of my 16GB SD card, but I'm considering uploading my entire iTunes library to Play Music. And maybe every few days, I'll change up the albums I download to my phone. I only really use the music for working out so I just need a few hours worth of songs. Has anyone tried Play Music this way?

I know Google advertises that you can upload 20,000 songs for free, but is that (for lack of a better word) a gimmick? My library sits at approximately 7000 songs, equivalent of about 40GB of music. So Google is just giving away about 120GB of cloud space for free? Seems too good to be true, but if it is, I'm on board.

It'll probably take me a good while to upload it all but I'll give it a shot. Probably a good idea to have an online backup of all my music, should my hard drive and iPod crash. If I really can upload my entire library, the 16GB strike against the One S has gotten that much smaller. The only con left I can think of is that it won't be compatible with T-Mo's 4G LTE network when it goes up in a year (according to a review I read on USA Today). But since my upgrade will expire well before that, I may as well pull the trigger.
By the way, has anyone heard about a $100 discount from T-Mo if you trade in your current 4G smartphone? I briefly heard something to this effect on the radio this morning but didn't pay close attention.

Yea, i was smart to wait til I got back on campus to do mine. My download and upload speeds here are insane. I uploaded about 20gb of music over night. Opposed to my dad who's still probably uploading his. He can't do it during the day cause my brothers hog the bandwidth with their ipods, phones and consoles to stream netflix and play mw3. I hate my Internet at home. Lol

Let's just say I am happy to be back with the Android crowd. I spent time with my Droid, Droid X, and Fascinate for 3 years then switched to an iPhone for a year. It was the lack of customization that brought me back. Even though my iPhone was jail broken it still wasn't like these Android phones. I haven't flashed my S3 to a new Rom yet but I am sure I will (I was all over it with my Fassy!) there were a couple things I really liked about the iPhone. I could play Pandora directly from the iPhone to my Denon networked receiver via Airplay. Is there something similar for android? Also the iPhone integrated well with my car radio. I can connect my S3 with an Aux cable but it doesn't seem like the volume is as good. Any ideas would be great. Once again glad to be back!!!!

AirSync is a seperate app that costs $5, but when I used it (on my Optimus S, and then a little bit on my Photon 4G, IIRC) it was well worth the money. There are free alternatives, but AirSync works exceedingly well and is integrated with DoubleTwist, which I'd still be using had I not switched to Spotify.

yeah
You have the full blown internet explorer there including a flash plugin (no java plugin though but pages which use java are awful, note, java is not javascript). Youtube is fine. Youtube in HTML5 mode is also fine (there is a beta opt in somewhere)
Even better is the metrotube app although I dont own an RT device so I have no idea if it works on the surface RT so well.
Go get it !!
So far I haven't found one youtube vid it won't play.
If you want to be able to play Youtube vids in the background take a look at the youtube DJ app.
I use it to play background music instead of paying for spotify
You honestly think MS would release an OS that can't play YOuTube videos? Ha... even WP7 could do that (though one of many apps or through the http://youtube.com/html5 opt-in); Windows RT is far more powerful and feature-full (including Flash, which is what is used to play YouTube normally) and therefore can handle any video that can be played on a PC.
You can also play Flash games, Flash videos on sites other than YouTube, and so on.

Lumia 710 owner here, you dont even need to to the html5 opt in. Sometimes it does throw a hissy fit about needing flash player but most of the time the regular desktop youtube site works fine on WP7. I personally opt for m.youtube or the metrotube app most of the time though.
Surface RT plays YouTube videos better than any iPad.
Works fine.

32gb RT tablet only without student deal: £399.00
^ with deal: £359.10
or, 10% off.
And thats the same for the entire lineup of surface RT and pro models, ie both storage capacities with and without covers. Its only 10%.
Unless they are offering another deal in the US.
What, are you suggesting that MS give us in the UK a raw deal.... lol

did I specifically have to state it?
I guess we did get the free touch cover deal earlier than the US but that's ended now.
And don't forget, Microsoft research in Cambridge, I actually attended one of their lectures for computer science students in Cambridge as part of AS computing. Kinect lead was there for a nice lecture on how really the kinect is guessing far mire than it should be
Ha, no you didnt, MS have almost taken over from Samsung as my most disliked company at the mo, at the rate they are going with my Pro order the 256Gb version will be available in the UK, if not the bloody Pro2...

Cancel the order and buy it from John Lewis in store. They do keep a few and charge the same as Microsoft direct. Or pester Microsoft with trading standards threats, hell, perhaps ring trading standards and see what your rights are.
I would of done by now if it was my money but ordered it through work, after the delay in the first order they gave me a £100 discount code for the second order which still hasnt gone through, I have been told I will be further compensated so tbh whatever I do its going to be cheaper than it would of been anywhere else, even the @surface twitter guys are on the case as well now.
The 256Gb that was announced in China has also been announced, all be it in limited numbers in the US, so by the time I actually get mine shipped I'll change it for a 256Gb and still get it cheap, or free, at this rate lol..
