yeah
You have the full blown internet explorer there including a flash plugin (no java plugin though but pages which use java are awful, note, java is not javascript). Youtube is fine. Youtube in HTML5 mode is also fine (there is a beta opt in somewhere)
Even better is the metrotube app although I dont own an RT device so I have no idea if it works on the surface RT so well.
Go get it !!
So far I haven't found one youtube vid it won't play.
If you want to be able to play Youtube vids in the background take a look at the youtube DJ app.
I use it to play background music instead of paying for spotify
You honestly think MS would release an OS that can't play YOuTube videos? Ha... even WP7 could do that (though one of many apps or through the http://youtube.com/html5 opt-in); Windows RT is far more powerful and feature-full (including Flash, which is what is used to play YouTube normally) and therefore can handle any video that can be played on a PC.
You can also play Flash games, Flash videos on sites other than YouTube, and so on.

Lumia 710 owner here, you dont even need to to the html5 opt in. Sometimes it does throw a hissy fit about needing flash player but most of the time the regular desktop youtube site works fine on WP7. I personally opt for m.youtube or the metrotube app most of the time though.
Surface RT plays YouTube videos better than any iPad.
Works fine.

Works fine for what you WANT it for.
As a device I should imagine it'll work for what your school expects you to NEED it for as well, Word, Excel etc..

Certainly not in the UK.
32gb RT tablet only without student deal: £399.00
^ with deal: £359.10
or, 10% off.
And thats the same for the entire lineup of surface RT and pro models, ie both storage capacities with and without covers. Its only 10%.
Unless they are offering another deal in the US.
What, are you suggesting that MS give us in the UK a raw deal.... lol

I guess we did get the free touch cover deal earlier than the US but that's ended now.
And don't forget, Microsoft research in Cambridge, I actually attended one of their lectures for computer science students in Cambridge as part of AS computing. Kinect lead was there for a nice lecture on how really the kinect is guessing far mire than it should be

Cancel the order and buy it from John Lewis in store. They do keep a few and charge the same as Microsoft direct. Or pester Microsoft with trading standards threats, hell, perhaps ring trading standards and see what your rights are.
I would of done by now if it was my money but ordered it through work, after the delay in the first order they gave me a £100 discount code for the second order which still hasnt gone through, I have been told I will be further compensated so tbh whatever I do its going to be cheaper than it would of been anywhere else, even the @surface twitter guys are on the case as well now.
The 256Gb that was announced in China has also been announced, all be it in limited numbers in the US, so by the time I actually get mine shipped I'll change it for a 256Gb and still get it cheap, or free, at this rate lol..

why is the android lacking so much on emulation? wm had numerous full functional emulators for it, only free snes emulator i can find, you can not load saved states, and doesnt save the battery. real pointless for zelda
anyone know of more free emulators not listed in the market?
They're not free for a reason. People put a lot of time and effort into their emulators sometimes, so it's a pay off when they get a small monetary support from their buyers. Just buy them, don't be cheap.
yeah i will eventually like a few other apps... but that also dont really answer the question
the paid versions allow you to save states etc. I have seen many emulators such as
SNES
NES
GAMEBOY ADVANCE
SEGA GENESIS
im sure there might be some for older systems as well, what are you complaining about?
The -Oid emulators are great, work fine and allow save states. Worth the money Eg:
Nesoid, Snesoid, Gameboid etc etc.
im not complining, and snesoid is great, but what i was looking for is one that supports save states that is free. might sound cheap, but i cant afford to go spend 3.50 right now on an emulator being laid off for xmas, rent, car payment...
free ones with every feature imaginable don't exist. if you really can't afford $3.50, which is about the price of a meal, i'm very sorry for you.

what i would like to see is a psx emulator...
maybe not for the qualcomm 7200 cpus... but on the snapdragon and the cortex, those two should be able to handle emulation just fine

PSX has a 200/300 mhz cpu, for emulation you'll need +/- ten times the processing power. He was right when he talked about the CPU.
About the thread topic now...
Ok. First off - android has enough emulators for GBA, SNES, SEGA, GBC and SNES. Yes, they are paid, but the emulators for WM are mostly paid too.
Second - PSX is emulated pretty well on a Diamond which has the same amount of ram and exactly the same cpu/gpu as the G1. The emulator is called FPSCE and worked very well on my underpowered IPAQ 614 with only 520 MhZ cpu and no GPU at all. We can only hope that the guys that made it for WM will port it to android. It was a long waited app for WM and took about 1-2 years to come out working, so be patient and maybe the next google phone you have will get a PSX emulator. I got laid off too and it sucks, but don't worry, I'm sure things will be getting better in the next year. I'm hoping I get enough money just when they make an ARM Cortex based android handset with HDMI output
cough *motorola* cough *shadow* cough *Sholes Tablet* cough *whatever*....
Hey, why not google the FPSCE dev's and ask them if they are going to port it to android...

Sure... 3.50 is still money, even if it's not much for most people who have a job.
Come on, no offense but if you can't afford it, leave it at it and wait until you can. And if you are too poor to afford a 3.50 app why do you bother with playing Nintendo games instead of looking for a new job.
But it's really not a big deal. People played the original games without game states as well. AFAIK you can still SAVE in the way the game allows to, it's only the save-anytime state-saves that don't work.
no its all saves, still cant use battery saves. and i broke down and bought snesoid. sorry but my line of work in maine with all of the mills closing and fab shops loosing lots of contracts, its basically impossible for a welder/millwright to find a job.
I just tested the gameboid emu with a test game (kirby's wonderland or... kirby's somethingsomething) and it saves my progress as it would have on the original gba. Dunno about snesoid and such, but since it's the same devs I guess they support saving (just not the custom states).
Maybe it works with some and not with others... EDIT: seems like it.
I just got a Viewsonic gtablet from Sears today (was on sale $379.00),looks like it can be very powerful... but I am lost ,it needs some updates... no market ... Very fast on the net... no flash at all, wont play any youtubes
I hope someone know s something about this tablet , I cant find any help other than calling Viewsonics help number
this is the newest pad i ever seen
just saw this device today on engadget.. ive been looking for a phone/tablet but this baby is fast enough that I might just use my g1 for calls and use this for everything else.. I wonder if there is going to be any modding for this device? Wonder if we can get marketplace that would be nice.
I am very interested in this tablet as well. If someone could get the market working, it would probably be the best android tablet out there right now.
I'm probably going to call my local SEARS, tomorrow - I pre-ordered an Archos 101, but this thing might actually be better (and available quicker). It's a little pricier than I was looking to spend, but it's probably very fast.
@catttman,
also interested in the viewsonic. apparently sears sold out its preorders online. can you confirm if its running 2.2 and the ram? Hopefully the ram is 1GB. Take some pics of the device

The Viewsonic 10 inch Android powered G-Tablet will be available for purchase via Sears online and in-store beginning this Tuesday. The tablet features Android 2.2, Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chipset running at 1GHz, 512MB RAM, 16GB of internal flash memory, microSDHC expansion slot, 10-inch capacitive display and a front-facing camera for video calls via Wi-Fi.
Pricing is currently set at $379.99, but the online store incorrectly points to a listing for the ViewSonic ViewPad which is a similar tablet that includes dual-boot capability with Android and Windows 7.

Someone posted that video. It shows that we really need someone smarter than I to get on this thing. This thing needs stock android ASAP, or at least something that removes the overlay and gets the normal apps on it. I am thinking of getting one if my local sears has them and a good return policy. The key will be installing a hacked version of market on it. Or if possible just installing the market APK and editing the file that tricks it into thinking it's a nexus.
I also purchased one tonight and it is utter junk with this TapnTap UI loaded on it. I did manage to load Launcher Pro and this thing was FLYING! Lets get this project moving!
from that youtube video:
tap n tap UI looks decent. I'm worried about the wifi issue. looks like i'll stop by sears tomorrow and hopefully can pick one up.

That video doesnt really show how bad that UI is. I bought this thing cause i saw a review on it. The guy on the video said it had stock froyo...which would have been amazing. Also the LCD has some really bad viewing angles...
Hopefully Tuesday I'll be picking one up... Or at least trying to convince my wife that I need this. I'll just tell her how awesome Angry Birds will be on it...
We need some serious support for this. First 10" tegra 2 tablet in the US! Can't wait to see what it can do with XDA behind it.

Just checked online and the Sears in boston has one left in stock. Guess who bought it?
Can't wait to play with it!
I live south of boston and the sears I went to didn't have theirs yet. Hopefully that means they will be getting them soon if the Boston one had them.
Question, this app freezes while updating and judging by the comments in the reviews of the app in the marketplace, a few other people are having the same issue. I was told by an ATT rep that you had to have U-verse at home in order to use this app. But on ATT.com, theres a separate package specifically for the phone that's 9.99. I'm getting two different answers and no solution. Does anyone know for sure?
Yeah pretty much 7 days free, then 9.99 a month to use the app.
the funny thing is that my backflip had a "Mobile Video" app i think and it would be able to watch videos on there like full disney shows some clips Spongebob and what not.
not it doesnt come preloaded on any new android device try to call in about that.
You can buy a used slingbox for ~$70, then the slingplayer app is $30.

Well worth it especially if you have a dvr, since then you can watch all your recorded tv. Works excellent over the air and I'm in Philly getting nowhere near full 4g yet.
A lot of people acquired the HP Touchpad this weekend due to HP's firesale. It's fairly likely that Android will be ported over to it soon. Honestly I really wanted to get the Asus Transformer, but couldn't say no to the $99 price of the Touchpad.
So my question to you is: Do I wait until the Transformer 2 comes out or should I sell the HP and get the Transformer 1 now?
Depends if you need the dock..
Try to sell it. I'll give you $50 for it. I mean, it is a discontinued device that probably won't get much legacy support. Or buy a TF, use both for a week, and sell or return the one you like least.
i think you're a bit too omptimistic on the touchpad getting cm7. there's a lot of things to be done before a functional android port is ready for the common folk.
assuming they manage to do an insecure boot, they'd still have to implement (or find a compatible) driver for all the components of the touchpad. the android version is most liked going to be gingerbread (as per touchdroid project's set goals).
by the time a fully funation android system is up and running, it might be time for an upgrade. of course, webos isn't a terrible OS, so you would have gotten some use of it, so it's not a total waste...but if you're getting it with an android port it mind, i'd say good luck.

This is exactly the type of information I'm looking for. Thank you finalhit! I'm really green when it comes to porting an OS, so your timeframe helps to put things into perspective. I won't expect Android anytime soon. WebOS seems to work pretty great for now. I've got skype and hulu running well... and I love the way it integrates all of my photos from facebook as well as all of my email addresses seamlessly. The free 50gb of web storage is nice, and having the same screen as the iPad is great too. LOL, I think I may end up keeping both.... and then sell the Transformer when the TF2 comes out. It was only $286 anyway.
If you are searching for an highly customizable and productor supported tablet you may definitely go for the transformer IMHO..which android is designed for..
However, why do you want to sell your touchpad that you had just buy?..
If I was in you even if I want to buy the transformer I'll wait for news about the new transformer and/or news about an android port for the touchad..always IMHO..
I suggest u wait for transformer 2 wit a kal el processor which is rumoured to be out b4 christmas, and use the touchpad to hold u over til it comes in. I have a transformer and recently acquired a 32 gb touchpad bc I wanted to check out web os. I haven't received my touchpad yet but I've heard good things about web os and it should atleast do u a decent job until the next gen android tablets come out.

Like you, I have them both... TouchPad and the Transformer.
Theys hould be announcing the Transformer 2 in October. I will give the old Transformer 2 to my wife.
As for the Touchpad, I have played around with it (I bought a 32gb one)for 2 straight days. Build quality is excellent. Speed gets a disgruntled "meh". Display is nice. Flash in the browsers is EXTRA Nice (better than Android Stock browser, for sure). Speaker quality is exceptional. Headphone quality is ok, but when I plug it into my car stereo, audio levels go wayyyy down. Game play is good also. A year ago, folks would pay $99-150.00 for a Digital Picture frame. If I can find the stand, for between $30.00-$50.00, I wil l have paid $180-200.00 for a DPF that also plays music, streams movies (get Kalemsoft), surfs the web, plays games, and if they finish the QuickOffice app correctly, types papers.
I think it was and is the DEAL of the century.
I'd say just keep the Touchpad. $115 doesn't really dent your wallet, and by the time the TF 2 comes out decide to get it then. From what I've seen, I think the Touchpad would be a nice couch tablet, especially for the price. Just have it on the coffee table in front of your TV. Seems perfect for those moments when your wondering who that pretty actress is, or when said movie was made, etc. I couldn't see myself using it as a everyday tab like my TF.
EDIT: Anyone know where they are in stock? I want one, my mom wants one, and so does her co-worker, but we'd like to only pay the discounted $99.

So, I'm looking to get a wp7 phone, strictly for the xbox live games/integration. I already have a phone that I love, but I happen to be a bit of an xbox achievement whore, and it'd be cool to be able to play games on a handheld that count for gamerscore (I know, I'm pathetic). Obviously, I don't need a contract with a carrier for this, since I won't be using the phone as a phone. I plan on just using it on wifi.
Unfortunately, I don't know much about wp7 phones at all, so I'm hoping you guys can point me in the right direction of a "cheap" (prefereable < $100) handset that will run games halfway decently.
Thanks in advance!
Im in the same situation, though im trying to replace a zunehd.
I looked around, and it seems like the LG quantum is the cheapest, so far.

there is no phone where you can play games decently as all windows phones have a minimum hardware requirements..Almost all windows phones are compatible with the apps and games available in the marketplace. The best and the cheapest option available according to me is Samsung focus SGH-i917 you should get a good used phone for arnd $150 ..LG quantum is also good and cheaper than focus..you should get that for around 120-130 USD..

You have Verizon wireless according to your profile. You have only one choice.
The HTC Trophy. Not a bad little phone but, if your a heavy gamer like I am, it's not really fully designed for that. I have one. Games run fine on it and Mango games run even better (60fps, noticable difference).
Note, besides bigger screens, storage memory or QWERTY keyboards, every first gen WP7 device specs are the same.
The HTC Trophy is $49.99 with a 2 year, and you can get one Non-Contract price for about $400 (ebay $250-400 new/used).
How's that for cheap ?
Also to note, if you wanted to use a WP7 device after playing with it as your phone with your carrier, the Verizon HTC Trophy (Spark_W) is really your only option.
Well, since you are not looking to use it for phone, I recommend you get the LG Quantum. You can get brand new unsubsidized one for $200.
Thanks everybody for the info. I don't think $200 is worth it to me for a few achievement points at the moment. Maybe I'll try to find a Quantum on Craig's list or something. Thanks again!
