A lot of people acquired the HP Touchpad this weekend due to HP's firesale. It's fairly likely that Android will be ported over to it soon. Honestly I really wanted to get the Asus Transformer, but couldn't say no to the $99 price of the Touchpad.
So my question to you is: Do I wait until the Transformer 2 comes out or should I sell the HP and get the Transformer 1 now?
Depends if you need the dock..
Try to sell it. I'll give you $50 for it. I mean, it is a discontinued device that probably won't get much legacy support. Or buy a TF, use both for a week, and sell or return the one you like least.
i think you're a bit too omptimistic on the touchpad getting cm7. there's a lot of things to be done before a functional android port is ready for the common folk.
assuming they manage to do an insecure boot, they'd still have to implement (or find a compatible) driver for all the components of the touchpad. the android version is most liked going to be gingerbread (as per touchdroid project's set goals).
by the time a fully funation android system is up and running, it might be time for an upgrade. of course, webos isn't a terrible OS, so you would have gotten some use of it, so it's not a total waste...but if you're getting it with an android port it mind, i'd say good luck.

Well I just bought it for $115. I'm sure not going to sell it for $50 when they're selling on ebay for $215.

This is exactly the type of information I'm looking for. Thank you finalhit! I'm really green when it comes to porting an OS, so your timeframe helps to put things into perspective. I won't expect Android anytime soon. WebOS seems to work pretty great for now. I've got skype and hulu running well... and I love the way it integrates all of my photos from facebook as well as all of my email addresses seamlessly. The free 50gb of web storage is nice, and having the same screen as the iPad is great too. LOL, I think I may end up keeping both.... and then sell the Transformer when the TF2 comes out. It was only $286 anyway.
If you are searching for an highly customizable and productor supported tablet you may definitely go for the transformer IMHO..which android is designed for..
However, why do you want to sell your touchpad that you had just buy?..
If I was in you even if I want to buy the transformer I'll wait for news about the new transformer and/or news about an android port for the touchad..always IMHO..
I suggest u wait for transformer 2 wit a kal el processor which is rumoured to be out b4 christmas, and use the touchpad to hold u over til it comes in. I have a transformer and recently acquired a 32 gb touchpad bc I wanted to check out web os. I haven't received my touchpad yet but I've heard good things about web os and it should atleast do u a decent job until the next gen android tablets come out.

Like you, I have them both... TouchPad and the Transformer.
Theys hould be announcing the Transformer 2 in October. I will give the old Transformer 2 to my wife.
As for the Touchpad, I have played around with it (I bought a 32gb one)for 2 straight days. Build quality is excellent. Speed gets a disgruntled "meh". Display is nice. Flash in the browsers is EXTRA Nice (better than Android Stock browser, for sure). Speaker quality is exceptional. Headphone quality is ok, but when I plug it into my car stereo, audio levels go wayyyy down. Game play is good also. A year ago, folks would pay $99-150.00 for a Digital Picture frame. If I can find the stand, for between $30.00-$50.00, I wil l have paid $180-200.00 for a DPF that also plays music, streams movies (get Kalemsoft), surfs the web, plays games, and if they finish the QuickOffice app correctly, types papers.
I think it was and is the DEAL of the century.
I'd say just keep the Touchpad. $115 doesn't really dent your wallet, and by the time the TF 2 comes out decide to get it then. From what I've seen, I think the Touchpad would be a nice couch tablet, especially for the price. Just have it on the coffee table in front of your TV. Seems perfect for those moments when your wondering who that pretty actress is, or when said movie was made, etc. I couldn't see myself using it as a everyday tab like my TF.
EDIT: Anyone know where they are in stock? I want one, my mom wants one, and so does her co-worker, but we'd like to only pay the discounted $99.

Not in stock anywhere anymore. Maybe HP might get some shipments from retailers like costco who shipped their inventory back, so the official hp site is probably ur best bet, but i doubt they will get em.

Well, I knew this day would come, as I originally bought the G-Tablet as a hold-me-over until Archos got themselves together on the 101. And now it's here. I'll probably keep them both until my return date comes up on the G-Tablet. But, I can't see returning the Archos device.
Decisions, Decisions!
lol.. wow. Me to, I ordered the second it was up, and did 2 day. So mine should be coming saturday also. Maybe?
did you order Yesterday on Archos.com when the 101 went up for sale? and do 2 day shipping. My tracking number I have already, but it's not in UPS system yet
Did you guys consider you might prefer the g tablet? Remember archos 101 will probably never see gingerbread, and the tegra2 will have honeycomb support. The ui is probably better with the archos...for now. Just have to weigh the pros and cons. However there are a few features the 101 has that are nice, like hdmi and the kickstand.

Please post a comparison after you have both. I'm sure many people are trying to make the same decisions as you. In particular can you post about the viewing angle and how laggy the tablet is?

Yeah! LOL! I Got it yesterday with 2-day shipping . . . So, let me rephrase: I HOPE it gets here Saturday, waiting on the UPS update too.
I'll report back after playing with both. But right now I'm on a usb keyboard/case & a bluetooth mouse and loving this thing!
Crimton, you say that cuz of Archos bad update procedure in the past right. They've mentioned they need to and will improve that. Just like the Archos 101 was released with 2.1 in UK, and getting 2.2 in the next 2 weeks. End of November. They also said they will do future updates on these newer, better tablets. but we will see. Just like Samsung, they have a terrible track record.
I'm not buying the 101 for Gingerbread. I'm buying it for a cheap, low cost tablet to enjoy for the next few months. and in Feb, or March I'll get a 2.3 or 3.0 HTC or Moto tablet that will be feature complete and more of a tablet experience. Since 2.2 really isn't fully there yet. And what do you mean the tegra will have gingerbread support. because LG, and Moto are releasing Tegra 2 phones in Q1. Yea your right. but by then i'll be getting something better I'm sure.

You may be correct. But, I'm not so concerned with Gingerbread right now, just the 2.2 upgrade later this month. There's no telling when the HDMI/hybrid cable will make it stateside from China for the Viewsonic. And, if they haven't fixed all the crap we've had to wade through on this forum to get this thing remotely close to passable by Black Friday sales, Viewsonic will be toast. LOL!
Can you imagine the everyday consumer turning this thing on to see what we saw with the TNT & no Flash Returns with be en masse!!!
Yup, black friday will be a disaster with no market, or flash like the box says. but yea.. Anyways I have a few things i don't like about the G-tablet. and I'm not really banking on Viewsonic fixing software much.
There's some great dev's here though, doing some good things. I'm sure it will be smooth as butter very soon. The media aspects of Archos sold me, the HDMI out, it's coded for some serious media handling and playback. I'll be using it to my TV often also. That and the kickstand, and the entire top isn't glass so it wont break as easy if dropped. No fingerprints on the entire top like the G. and I wont accidentally hit the soft keys all day long.
Anyways. my UPS is showing up now
Anyone know how I can pull the TnT keyboard n use on the Archos 101?

Agreed al round!!
What's your delivery date???
I'd also like to hear a comparison between the two, if you have the time (I had pre-ordered the 101 until the Gtab showed up in my sites). I'm hearing mixed reviews on the LCD and I'm curious if it has the same viewing angle issues.
And if you could do a dump of /system, that would be awesome. I'd love to be able to port their media player over to the GTab.
MY delivery date isn't up yet, but UPS is showing Signature Confirmation Required. I work tomorrow and monday. damnit. I better have someone around to get it.
Yes beet, i will do whatever you need.. I saw a few video's of the 101 and 70 in action, and those video's alone the viewing angles seemed better than the G. My own video shows how bad the angles can be. That is why that video made me think otherwise.. Oh and there's a very good file manager that i think the 101 and 70 has. but I'm not sure. I also read rageinthecage gives temp root on the Archos. So we can temp root, do a titanium backup or what not if needed. but thats unconfirmed.

a combination of the two would be ideal. once we get the official hdmi dock that will eliminate the need for the kickstand and the hdmi port. i just hope that viewsonic is gonna get some updates out to us quick. i know what you're saying about not being worried about gingerbread right now(however i believe i meant honeycomb, tablets will be shipping with it soon http://androidandme.com/2010/11/tab...th-tegra-2-could-arrive-as-early-as-february/) but i also do not want a device that will be outdated soon after i buy it. i would love to see a comparison of the 2 though while you have them both.

right and if everything goes right it should be just around tax return time ;-)
I am interested to know the plug-in comes with 101. I owned 2 of Archos 605 wifi devices. Archos charge for every plug-in. FOr example, DVD Mpeg2 play back, Web browser, Cinema plug-in. All plug-ins cost me almost same as the device. SPecially, the plug-ins are serial number specific, I can't reuse the same plug-in in the other one device I own. I am so curious to see what included in the price. As I saw the plug-in is downloadable but is option. Just my experience.

Agreed. Flash performance, game emulators and Quake already play far better on the G-Tablet.
Out of box though, the 101 is better (obviously).

Just read an article that pointed to Best Buy for a new Asus 10 inch android tablet with better specs than our beloved gTabs for $400. And... it's already got honeycomb.
Asus Eee Pad Transformer tablet
Acer Iconia A500
The Asus Transformer is delayed for a U.S. launch now until the end of this month due to supply shortages.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/13/asus-apologizes-for-eee-pad-transformer-delay-it-wont-detail-u/
I *really* hope they can release it at $400, the recent video preview (Via Slashgear) made it pretty attractive (to me at least).
This is one of the devices I was eyeing. Allegedly it has an IPS screen as well. Anyone who's read my posts long enough knows how badly I want an IPS screen.
Yep, the Eee Pad Transformer looks like a winner to me.

I guess we'll have to wait for someone here to get one in their hands and do a proper review.
If it gets love from the creative folks at xda then I may sell off my second gTab and pick one of these up once it's released to the public.
and im now disappointed in my gtab before i even get it, thanks alot!
hopefully it cant be rooted =D
At this price I'm interested as well. I have a couple of friends who are interested in my Gtablet with the Vegan rom and accessories for around $300. If Honeycomb isn't available for the Gtab by the time this comes out I may make the switch.
Isn't it being released April 6th? 5 days?!?!

Don't be. It's $285 (assuming you are a Woot! user) and this ASUS device has NOT been released yet. It may not show up for a month, or longer.
The GTAB will be dated one day, but that's going to happen for all electronics, it's unavoidable.
That dock (that basically turns the tablet into a laptop) looks sweet! Even though the price for the dock hasn't been announced (at least not to my knowledge) I want it.
Also, the fact the tablet comes with an HDMI port on it rather than relying on the dock is also pretty cool.
It will be very interesting indeed to get the review when someone here can get their hands on it.
If I can confirm this will be available for $400 @ Best Buy next week, I will be putting my gtab on craigslist ASAP and coughing up the $115 extra for IPS screen with honeycomb!

Don't be, man. If you always want the latest and greatest, you will never buy anything at all. Ever. With the number of companies in the world and how fast they are moving in research and development, whatever you buy will always be outdated.
Personally, I think the gtab is good for me for at least a few years.

I would wait to see the reviews. The Motorola Xoom (honeycomb) out of the box wasn't as zippy as our gTabs.
And besides, you got a helluva deal on your gTAB purchase compared to early adopters like me that paid the $400 on them in November/December of last year. Who knows, if you get your gTab and put a custom ROM on it (I'm running VEGAn 5.1.1) you may decide to wait a while before you fork out that extra $115.

Just wondering if you have to choose between Asus Eee Pad or HP touchpad? I have just bought touchpad as an impulse purchase, and it does email and browsing pretty well, and that's it. Not a hugh app collection, and there are some intense effort to get Microsoft share working with overclock kernel upto 1.9 Ghz.
I have Viewsonic and HP Touchpad, and always wanted EE Pad, but using Viewsonic version of Honeycomb, touchpad's WebOS is so refined, but lack apps.
Any thoughts?
I think there is some dev groups that work on a honeycomb version for the touch pad so maybe u should wait
And about the eee pad, overall great tablet (and i didnt did root yet)

Thanks. I do have working Honeycomb on my Viewsonic Gtablet, and It works great, but still don't have optimized kernel. I have just started using the touchpad, and I am in love with card system in OS. So ahead of everybody including Apple and Google OS in my opinion.

My biggest issue with the Android in Honeycomb/Viewsonic is that email client for Exchange is slow and downright pitiful. I wonder if Exchange clinet is smooth as Touchpad on TF101?
The Touchpad owns it in build quality, sound quality, and OS especially at $99 or $149. I had a Transformer and dock for 2 months and used the crap out of it but sold it because the web browsing was frustrating among other things. Got lucky too and got $539 out of it on Ebay so hardly lost anything. Then ended up getting 5 touchpad at the firesale prices and sold 2 on Ebay for $290 and $250 then another at cost and kept 2 so I basically got 2 free TouchPads.
It's all about the apps, really. Sure, webOS is a nice mobile OS, and I used a launch day Pre for about 18 months before giving up on ever seeing legitimate app support on the platform. The TouchPad is a decent enough device for $99, but you can't really compare it to the Transformer--one's a dead platform, another is just starting out.
I can do much, much more on Android than on webOS. So while the TouchPad makes for a cheap (at the fire sale price) browsing and email machine, I'd not plan on doing much more with it.
My touchpad will be arriving next week. I seriously doubt it will replace my Transformer, but probably my iPad 2 (which I can then dedicate exclusively to games). We will see...
Touchpad vs Transformer
I bought a TP in the 'firesale' and have been very impressed by what it can do. But, and its a big but, I do see Android and my TF as the way to go. The HP machine is sitting in my livingroom. It is really handy just to be able to pick it up, read an email or browse to the news then put it down again. It also is a very good photo frame (logged on to my Flickr account). Not bad for £90.
But if I want to do something useful, like access Facebook, Google Maps, have a look at my schedule, or whatever, then I reach for the TF. With access to the android market and all the apps it has, it is so much more useful.
So,, they can happily live together in my world.

I think the future will be full of tablets in one household... one to replace paper note pads, one to replace your phone (I use facetime on my ipad more than the regular phone when talking with my parents), one to replace a tv guide and remote control, one to replace recipe books, etc... if they come down to the $50 - $100 with minimal hardware specs, they can fill just about any "small tasks". Of course, we will always have our "main" device, which does many tasks, but the idea of having multiple devices to do certain things is a great idea. When I work, I use my TF for office stuff and my ipad for written notes, calculator or a second screen - beats the hell out of paper.

this should be out before too long (hopefully by end of year--october is what people are saying). TF2 will get this and the price of the original TF will go down while TF2 will come in at $399.

Looks bhawss. Maybe I'll just hold on to that $99, sell my TF to my dad (lol) and buy a TF 2 when it's out XD
The TF2 is already being delayed. I wouldn't expect it before Q1 of 2012.

most reports are saying a "month or a bit more" as reported from August. It was suppose to come out Aug 31st but since the Tegra 3 got delayed they are also delayed. Hopefully it'll be out by October - November.
Past experience tells me to not hold my breathe
Unless the TF2 is $399 or less, ASUS would be making a mistake releasing it in the next 6 months. The Android tablet market is not doing well at all and it would benefit manufacturers to keep their products in the market longer, but at a lower price. Tablets are not phones, manufacturers do not have to make ten models a year...

TF2 is suppose to be $399. TF did pretty well in terms of # of sales around 400,000 i believe. either way, TF2 is on the way!
Is it worth buying now or just wait for Xoom 2 or I should buy Galaxy Tab 10.1?
I have iPad 1 ,but I don't like it ,it not very productivity just game. I am now considering buying an Android Tablet.
Should I buy Xoom or Galaxy Tab 10.1? I also like to flash new ROM. Which one have more custom ROM?
Good question. My two cents...
Presumably, Google will release the source code for Honeycomb sometime soon after the release of Icecream Sandwich. It's also a (I believe widely accepted) presumption that a new model Xoom will be released soon, especially with the Christmas season approaching.
Not that Google and Motorola should really ever be expected to have their **** together enough to coordinate this correctly, from a marketing stand point it makes the most sense. It would make sense that the new Xoom would have the new OS in it.
However, two great things will happen if that's all true; three price of the Xoom 1 will drop considerably (it already has dropped pretty far), and new Honeycomb ROMs will be popping up with far better customizable interfaces and capabilities than Icecream Samich!
This is all speculation on my part, and I may be completely ignorant of some key facts, but it's the reason why I have no interest in a new tablet or Icecream Sandwich.
My last experience with this sort of thing was when I was loading my Droid 1. Even though updates were open source (TRUE O.S.), and always highly anticipated, they never really contained anything so mind blowing that I ever felt it was worth jumping to a new custom made ROM that had it.
My advice is to get a Xoom now, or just when the new one hits the market. I'm no expert and would love tosee what other members say.
Yes...I bought mine three weeks ago.
But then again I wanted a solid tab experience and the Galaxy didnt cut it for me.
Build quality is better on the Xoom IMO - and I was lucky to snag a new one at $449.
A few things that I like about the Xoom:
- Screen quality is great on my unit - even though its an AUO.
- Sound quality is the best of any tablet. Im assuming you are using this device for media consumption and you wont be disappointed with the speaker layout or sound.
- Build quality is top notch. No Flex. Gorilla Glass.
- My unit is Wifi only (I have a tether plan if needed) and the battery life even on Stock ROM and Kernel is fantastic (rooted).
- For business use I like this tablet a lot. I can have clients sign .pdf's with ease and handle Office docs easily with QuickOffice and Repligo (Worth the $20 for a business professional)
There will always be something better because of the push to create with Android. Do yourself a favor and buy this now (if you play with it and like it of course) and if you need to upgrade in a year or so then do so.

I echo those sentiments.
i agree too, i bought mine even after i found out that motorola is preparing a quad core tab for release soon, but if i kept waiting for the latest then i will never end up buying anything, and i understand that every open source tablet with android is supported with updates for 18 months maybe ? i remember i read that somewhere, so motorola and google now as one company will support updates for us till october 2012 so i am pretty sure we will also get ICS
I just put my TP on e-bay. Now my TP had a OC 1.7 dual core with a gig of ram and a great GPU and IMO the best speaker system you could want. Once honeycomb gets put on it it will rock and be one of the best tabs there are right now IMO.
But i still sold it. I need HDMI out, SD card reader and the accessory support. I got a wifi only xoom for 310 shipped on ebay.
So really its up to you lol
I bought my xoom 3g second hand for 275. Loving it. But if price wasn't an issue, I might have gone with a galaxy tab 10.1 because it is a lot lighter which I think is important for a device you are going to be hold up to read a lot. Samsung manufactures excellent screens as well.

Xoom is better imho...you got a fantastic deal. Enjoy it and don't look back.
The XOOM is so lame I would say get an iPad2, there still isn't a better tablet in terms of pure processing power. The productivity apps are more robust than anything on Android. OpenOffice, QuickOffice and the like just fall short for anyone who is serious about getting work done. Android is still too juvenile at this stage. IPS isn't much better but if you're determined to make that mistake, the iPad 2 is the smartest way to do such a dumb thing. It's more expensive than a XOOM but costs less than the ASIA EEE Slate (the Win7 one) or the Lenovo Thinkpad X220. Those are powerful tablet like machines that are great for the enterprise.

I couldn't disagree more. There's nothing juvenile about the Xoom or android. The Xoom is for people who enjoy making the tablet their own. But YMMV.

Sorry man, the iPad is really good at many things and really bad at many things. Most importantly though, the iPad is the dumbest way to do a smart thing (usually, there are exceptions). If you are truly smart, you don't need preschool level hand holding, or ridiculous restrictions, to get things done.
Android is far more likely to be used by smart people than an iPad. Sorry but it's true. This doesn't mean there are no smart people using iPads, it simply means there are more dumb people using iPads than there are dumb people using Xooms(or other Android tablets). I say this because it's simple logistics. If you are dumb and you are looking at tablets, the only guidance you are likely to get is to buy an iPad. Just go into most retail outlets and watch what they push on the inexperienced.
Also, I agree that the best tablets will be the tablets that run a full OS. However, we are at least 10-12 months away from Windows 8. I wouldn't recommend a Windows tablet until Windows 8 is released.
Having said all this, I don't really like to call people dumb. Less experienced is a more appropriate description most of the time. There are, however, some people who really are just dumb.
I have had the iPad, several crappy and cheap Android tablets, The Nook Color, Acer Iconia A500, HP Touchpad, and (as of yesterday) the Motorola Xoom.
I chose the Xoom because I think it will receive the most love from Google in the future. This is for obvious reasons. I also chose the Xoom because it has accessory and dock options, expandable memory slot, and HDMI out without any proprietary adapters. I have just started to mess with this device but I do like the feel of it and it seems to be very well built.
My initial impression, in comparison to the Iconia, is that the performance is much smoother. One of the things about the Iconia was that the stock rom was very laggy at times. I haven't noticed this with the Xoom yet. Also, there isn't any add-on crap on the Xoom either. I prefer mostly stock Android, and the Iconia had a couple (in my opinion stupid) enhancements. This may explain the difference in performance. The only cool thing, I will miss, on the Iconia is the full size USB port.
I look forward to seeing what I can do with this device. It should work well with my SGS II.
Yea..im gonna wait until after Christmas and grab me a Xoom. mainly cause i don't have the money now lol. Or else i'd grab one now. But im happy playing with my Flashed GTab for the moment.
Don't know why i NEED a Xoom. Maybe the sexiness of it. Im not a Flasher. (Mine was already flashed when i got it). So Xoom already having 3.1 and upgradeable over the air right? Should be good enough for me.
Is 370$ good price for the xoom?
I will study in college soon and i am wondering if the xoom will suit me?

It's quite a good price. I think it should suit you fine.
Don't misunderstand. I recommended the iPad 2 for business solely because of the raw power of the cpu and the gpu. When combined with the robustness of the productivity software, it's a smarter choice for business for the money.
This isn't an emotional choice. If I had what I wanted, it would be something as powerful as the A9 processor with that gpu running win8.

I love Android, and especially the community that every device has.
I currently have an Epic 4G Touch (Sprint's GSII) and I have never owned a tablet.
This Thanksgiving break I visited my cousins and lo behold, practically all of them had an iPad 2. It was a very convenient thing to have around, I never really saw a tablet as a useful item. But I see that tablets are really neat now, it's like a phone, but bigger and not as heavy and clunky as a laptop.
And with today's web based world, it's really convenient to have a tablet on your coffee table to just use when chatting with friends, family gatherings or just watching tv and you need to look up something on the web. Or a device to watch Netflix or Hulu on, but your phone's screen is just too small and it's weird to hold it. Blah blah, useful features could go on.
Anyways, I missed the BestBuy sale for $250 unfortunately, and Gamestop is sold out for $300. But on Craiglist, a lot of folks are selling them for $330 unopened because they are bastards and bought them during black friday to make a profit.
I know the Transformer Prime is coming out on 12/8 for $500 but I simply can't afford that. Do you guys think that the regular Transformer will drop down in Price after the Prime comes out?
So I am left with multiple dilemmas:
1. Buy brand new for $330 off craiglist
2. Wait for possible price drop
3. 3D monitor + nVidia 3D vision kit
4. Solid State Drive
When I look into Android products I look into the modding community for the device on XDA, and it looks like the Eee pad has the best one.
So, should I get one or no?
If you could provide me with a link to buy one for under $300, I will buy it without hesitation.
Thank you
I can't give you a link, but I will tell you that you will certainly love your Eee Pad. Keep looking. This week has a lot of good internet deals. You're bound to find something. Otherwise offer someone on craigslist around $315 and see if they bite. Even at $330, its still a great value.

As an owner of a transformer I can personally say that it's a great device. It does everything for me (including the stuff you listed) and i'm not sure how much a performance boost the quad core will actually bring (to me i think the tegra 3 is an overkill in processor power).
I recall asus saying that when the transformer prime is released, the old transformer price will drop to 250 and 350 for the 16 and 32gb models (respectively). Don't quote me on this though.
However, if your interested in the dev/modding of the transformer you may be disappointed. I believe all the models you'll find in the stores today will have a locked kernel which means you can't root the device (until the xda dev's figure a way out)

What really? No way...
If I can't root it that's a deal breaker right there
edit: well im doing some current browsing on the forum and no where does it mention that some models can't be rooted.
In fact there's a one click root for all models in the dev section
New models can be rooted now. There is a link in the dev section somewhere. If you can wait untill the Prime comes out I will have 2 32gb for sale. Already rooted, with or without docks. In fact when the Prime comes out like the other poster said I bet you can get a good deal. I was planning on selling mine for 300 without dock when the time comes.
Edit: Post for rooting all versions is in dev section look for "razorclaw"

If you are still interested I am selling mine with keyboard and boxes for both already rooted (running Revolver) for $400 + shipping. Not a scratch on the tablet or keyboard. Just bought the keyboard a couple of weeks ago to replace a defective one.
PM if interested.

Well since you got two, and the Prime comes out in a week or so, why not C.O.D. one of those babies to my location ?
$300 is a deal.
I can personally tell you the new ones can be rooted VERY EASILY using razorclaw with one click. It took less than a second... I have a B90 and I bought it this week. Rooted, custom rom, cwm, and overclocked.

If you buy a transformer retail you can always get a price adjustment if it does drop. Bestbuy extended their return policy for 60 days during christmas. Just an idea.

Save your money and go to Best Buy and price match it with Game Stop for $299. I just bought the wife one for Christmas.
There will be a lot of these for sale as people trade up to the Prime, however I would be very cautious of the Craig's list ones advertised as new in box. They are more likely to be used with the box. The same thing happened when the current transformer replaced the Viewsonic Gtab. Once the prime comes out, you should be able to get a good used TF for $250 or so with some acc.

No, as long as it's a current advertised price they should match it, in stock or not.

I just called the best buy in my town and they said it had to be in stock in the store in our town too. So no deal on that. Luckily I snagged one last night from bhphotovideo for 344. Hopefully they don't get too cheap any time soon. They are selling out almost everywhere though.

You should be able to find one for $300. I bought one (excellent condition, barely used) last week with dock for $350 and there seem to be a few at around 320 without dock. Wait a week or so, people who have it at 320+ will not end up selling them anyway and when the prime comes out they'll go in the 250-300 range pretty quickly.
Best buy models are tf101-x1 and everywhere else they are the original tf101-a1. Best buy did this to prevent price matching the device because Walmart and others sold the a1 model, good luck on price matching

Just to revisit the original question for a moment, the SSD purchase might be a compelling alternative. It depends how you use the PC you would be putting it in, but they can pretty dramatically speed up a lot of tasks. Disk I/O is quite often the bottle neck in modern systems, and going from a spinning platter and arm to no moving parts could have a dramatic effect. Again though it all depends on how powerful your system is (if it can take full advantage of the IO speed gains), and what types of tasks you use it for.
Of course the flip side of that is: you may end up using your PC a LOT less if you pick up a Transformer, Prime or original. I know I do. Between my blackberry (email, instant messaging) and transformer (web surfing, google reader for rss feeds, and occasional angry birds or similar simple gaming), I barely have to use my laptop any more.
I got mine during black friday at best buy too. I was hestitant at first and wasn't sure about the rooting because of it being a newer and different model but this tablet is amazing. I love the internet, FLASH!, the apps, and the widgets. I hooked up to my tv the other day to show my roomates and they were blown away. I already rooted mine too just need to overclock it. This is is my first tablet and android device. The camera isn't that great but I did not get it for the camera. I recommend the best buy way. Buy it now and when the prime comes out you can return it to best buy and get the prime.
If I play with the prime and it seems worth it I will probably do that. However, if you want a first generation one there will probably be lots of people selling them on here. Totally worth the black friday mess and being short for rent. Also, if you use your phone as a hot spot with it it's even more amazing. There are plenty of apps to enjoy even without wi-fi and spotify or rdio for music.
I atually do use my laptop less now. Only thing I dont like is the laggyness of the keyboard strokes on this site. I am hoping overclocking will solve it. Dolphin and stock are both fast but I like dolphin the best so far. I'm falling in love with the touch gestures. Made one just for XDA
There are a couple of ways to get it for $299. Call around to the local game stops and see if they have the transformer in stock. When you called best buy you gave too much information.
