my battery causes phone brick - Thunderbolt General

I bought an OEM extended battery and had been using it exclusively for the last 3 months. This last week when flashing between a few new roms, AOSP and GB, I started having increasingly frequent shutdowns. eventually it got to the point I was pretty much positive it was bricked. As a last attempt I pulled the SD and battery, then replaced the battery with the one my phone came with. Sure enough I was back in business. has been 12 hours and no more forced shutdowns. Interestingly enough my extended battery will cause force shutdowns every time I put it back in my phone now.

Yes my phone use to do that. When I had the OG Droid. It was the battery I switched battery's I went for the extended battery I got. And but a stock one in and it worked fine.
Just but the HTC 2750 mah correct me if I'm wrong lol I forgot the size lol

Sounds like a faulty batt, its probly fluctuating its voltages or sending power spikes and causing your phone to shut off.

People use the term "brick" too loosely.
Trust me, when your phone bricks you'll know it.

I'm seconding this. Watch the voltage levels. See what they read at.

I'll agree it could easily be a bad battery, but for the record, looking at it's voltage probably isn't going to tell you much. If you were to look at voltage characteristics for a known-working battery you'd see some pretty wild spikes that might alarm you. If you're looking at this on a suspect battery and you've never looked at it before, you're going to assume that's the cause. Li-on batteries don't spike voltages in any meaningful way. They are actually VERY non-volatile regarding output. What you might have is a bad cell in the battery. The best way to diagnose this is to monitor it's charge characteristics and temperature. A bad cell will create much greater resistance inside the battery, creating heat during charging, and creating situations where load drive output voltages unexpectedly below 3 volts, at which point your device is very definitely going to try to shut off.

Dude just buy the HTC extended battery I have it and its worth the money!

Dude, it is an HTC extended battery,
yes bad battery is not brick phone, but when your phone starts rebooting in recovery, brick comes to mind pretty fast.
I just posted my findings to see if anyone had similar things happen to them, who knows how many people also assumed "brick" w/o trying a different battery and what not.

More evidence some problems because of bad batteries

Had a chat with T-Mobile about getting a replacement battery due to the one I have possibly causing freezing or reboots. After a bit if annoying troubleshooting crap they ordered a warranty replacement for the battery. Only problem? They're back ordered with no eta! Perhaps they're fixing them? I wouldn't worry too much about the back order. They told me the same thing and the next day I got a text saying it was shipped, I got it yesterday. They said my battery life was bad, it's still the same but at lest I've got a spare now.

I can't seem to think that batteries are at fault. I think it is just the wonky stock kernel. Have you guys tried CM7 and its default kernel?

Shouldnt be a problem. I went ahead and ordered a new battery this morning for the hell of it. Dude told me I didnt have to send the old one back or anything.
I called up for a new battery because mine is going nuts. Sitting idle with everything shut off and lost 25% in 1 hour and half. I told t-mobile that and complained that I was a loyal customer. They're sending me a new battery and letting me keep this one.
Anyone know where I can get a external charger than can charge this battery that comes with the phone? i'd buy one considering i can use both
The chargers that come with the knock off ebay batteries would prolly work.
I bought mine on ebay, just search for g2x charger...you can find two batteries and a charger for around $12.00 and they work great for me.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I have one of those chargers with those 2 batteries.
I'm a bit worried about using those 2 batteries though.... afraid to ruin my phone or I don't really want to get 4 hours use of those batteries. But the charger should definitely work then regp? Wouldn't damage my battery would it?
I cant promise it wont ruin your battery but my logic says if the battery is a clone of the original they should work in the same charger.. Check the voltage output on the battery and the charger just to make sure. I used the knock off charger for my real vibrant battery as well as the fake batteries and never had a problem.
Okay, so if the knock off charger has the same voltage and stuff, I can use it? Sounds good I guess!
I use and charge with the external charger the two knockoffs and the OEM batteries and they all work fine...
when charging batteries on the phone the knockoffs seem to run cooler...with the lg battery the phone gets hot, freezes and reboots while charging...but when charging the phone with the knockoffs it has never rebooted or frozen yet...
Edit: just jinx myself! G2x froze just now while charging with knockoff battery also...

If you don't explicitly sign out of chat in Facebook it will keep your phone awake. Otherwise it shouldn't hurt your battery

Still waiting for my exchange battery to arrive. The more I read the forums I have hope that's what is the cause. People are getting freezes even with cm7 which is a separate kernel. It would explain why for some people swapping out the phone worked because they got a different battery too. Lets hope I get a better battery.

Battery overheating issue? Read

I'm posting this for informative purposes. This is not to ***** about anything or prove anyone wrong. These are simply my findings and my conclusion. I was a sales person for wireless carriers for 8 years and saw this stuff a lot and I would stress test phones before swapping because I hated giving people refurbished crap for them to come back and complain about the same overheat issue. This experience led me to think before doing a device swap.
my G2x battery got hot from day one. From my monitoring I noticed the following.
1. The phone itself was not really hot. Just general radiation from the immediate battery area and it cooled off quickly after battery removal while battery would stay hot for a good 15-20 minutes.
2. Battery temp would hit 106 degrees.
3. Battery life just plain sucked. Charging it 2 to 3 times a day on light use.
T-mobile replaced my battery and after one full day of on and off abuse running 6 quadrants in a row at Max overclock amongst other things and with a thick non breathable case in the back the temp never got over 99 degrees. Prior to swap just reading and posting on xda would spike temps and that was with no case.
So before you decide to do anything pay close attention to what exactly is getting hot. Is the actual device hot or is it just the battery. Is the device a tad warmer simply due to the battery being too hot? Get a battery monitor installed to see the temp. Check your settings such as overclocking undervoltage etc.
T-Mobile just wanted to swap everything but since my phone was not hot and I had a good screen and never a boot or reboot issue even before root and bloat installed etc so I didn't want to take a chance and get a **** device. They also told me it was OK that k needed to charge it 3 times a day. I said with triple the usage on my G2 I almost never needed to charge it at all mid day. While each device varies, one third the battery life on one third the usage is simply not right no matter how you look at it.
So I say pay attention to detail before returning your device especially if your device is a good one because it would suck to get a **** device in exchange for your good one just because of a battery.
EDIT. I do want to add that my battery has spiked to 103.8 degrees while basically doing CPU intensive stuff While charging the entire time. When not on the charger it did not spike as high. After a short time after charge hit 100% it dropped over 1.5 degrees pretty quickly.

[Q] Is there anything I can do to keep it from overheating?

Recently I have had my phone turn off and not turn on, even when plugged into the charger, it blinks red for a while then it will stop blinking, after that I can turn it back on. It gets really hot, which is why I guess it is overheating. It only does this on long calls, these calls are important which is why I need to figure out how to stop this from happening.

Are you overclocking? Also how good is your battery? Batteries tend to get warm when the current draw is more than what the battery is capable of. I purchased a third party battery by Anker. Seems to run cooler for me and lasts longer than the stock battery ever did.
I have the same problem

I noticed this more with sense roms than i did with aosp or cm based ones. One thing you can try doing that may help as a temp relief, is turn off 3g and use 2g mode only. It will consume far less power during a phone call, ive personally almost doubled my call length by doing this. I only enable 3g(3.5g) when i need data.

I haven't done any overclocking, I am using the freshly squeezed version of MIUI. The battery seems fine. I got this one as an insurance replacement for my Inspire last month, it is an obvious refurb, so no telling how old it really is. I will look into the Anker battery.

Battery issues anyone?

Had my baby for a little over a year and a half, been nothing but a great phone in that time. This is where the problem starts... I'll be using it like normal, texting and surfing, and will have 98% battery, the phone will shut down, and when it decides to start back up, I will have 14% battery or less.... But it will go up if I leave it alone..... I've tried wiping the battery stats, even charging with the phone off, nothing is working. I will attach screenshots so you can see what's up.

Your battery is bad. Same thing happened to me, I recommend just buying a new OEM battery from a reputable dealer on Amazon, that's what I did. Try setting it down on a table and push on one side and if it rocks back and forth its bad. Or you can just look at it and see its swollen
Mine did that and it was just a bad battery. If you take the battery out and place it on a flat surface you may notice that it rocks left and right. If it rocks a lot or if you feel the middle and it feels swollen it may be symptoms of a bad battery.

It is dangerous because battery acid can get on you and cause sever skin irritation. You can continue like this for 1 to 2 days MAX until you get your new battery. Try not to use it because using it more will cause it to swell more, DUH try to only use it for emergencies and then once you get the new battery clean the terminals and you'll be good to go
I used mine got a while like that because i didn't know it was the battery lol

I'm curious about charging habits of the people who have bad batteries. I have had my phone since the day it came out and my battery is still fine. I never let it get below 30% unless I'm testing a new ROM. Killing lithium ion batteries is really bad for them. So how many of you drain it all the way on a regular basis?
I'm still using my old vibrant battery (at times). I don't think that it's as strong as the spare that I purchased a few months ago, but, is on par with the 18 month old battery that came with the phone. I zap them all the way down a lot of the time (then swap to a fully charged one). I do(try) to recharge to full before use though.
Mine does it but only when I'm using wifi or data could that still be a bad battery

That is probably a bad idea. I would try to plug it in around 15-20% with 20% being the best time. According to the batteryuniversity website 20-80% is ideal for li-ion batteries because it keeps the heat down. Charging from less than 15% creates heat because that is a low level and takes a bit longer to charge from therefore exposes the battery to more heat. A good charger and battery will shut off the charger once it hits 100% and only allow for a trickle charge if the battery drops below 100%. But I have seen my phone get hotter from about 85% to 100% if Im using it ie: plugged in and streaming music or using navigation.

[Q] Phone keeps turning off on me...

I keep having the phone turn off when I unplug it from my charger or if I don't hold the cord the right way it powers off. Now I checked the cable and the phone, the connector is fine. The other problem is I check the power level and the battery is at 100% but the moment it's unplugged it powers off again. So I replaced the battery and checked the contact pins to the battery and it's both good also.....so I am not sure what the next step is?
Can anyone please help? Also the phones never been dropped or gotten wet.
I know they keep saying that it shouldn't matter, but... might want to grab a battery calibration app or delete the battery info yourself. Alternatively, with the phone off, try to charge the battery.
Could be that the phone believes the battery is full when it's actually bone dry, and because it's disabled the charging, you're stuck whenever you aren't plugged in.

You should try to wipe youre battery with some app, just google it, ive seen much of them.
I would suggest something like this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration
Especially since it's free. Which beats any app with 'paid' in the internal name. But hey, if you have money to throw around, the other app does claim it knows what the real level is even without wiping it.
