We've got two android tablets and a phone and can easily swap the wife's iP4 for another.
With the availability of cheap, decent aftermarket hardware, has anyone thought of developing multi-device games? Personally I'd like UNO, Monopoly and Settlers of Catan. Not the same as multiplayer that usually assumes a back end sever to coordinate, but peer-to-peer off wifi/BT.
Does the approach even exist on any platform? Would be a good first for Android before Apple robs the idea with a patent.

Hello All,
I'm new to your forum but I've been developing software and games for over 25 years. After recently retiring my Zii Egg to a PMD after ZiiLabs failed to release the dev community a bug free version of Android that actually purposefully was left with hardware support disabled. All the hardware features were there running off their crap OS but they left it out for the Android developers.
Basically I got fkd out of $500 or something..Big deal, I moved on with our PC game development and forgot about Android until last Christmas when I was traveling to see my Family in Texas and had a chance to play with my sister's Galaxy running 2.1. There were limitations but the potential amazed me so I went out and grabbed a Droid X and started digging into the device.
My question to anyone who may have insight is: IS it worth my time to develop for Android when so many are becoming unhappy by the device limitations set by the carriers. For instance if I was to develop a multiplayer realtime simulation or game the technologies that are employed by the carriers such as B.O.D. (Bandwidth on Demand) would create insane latency issues.
Any thoughts or feedback would be appreciated.
Ty and Peace!

Right now I feel the market for android is... Well stupid. Most people that have android phones aren't especially tech savvy and really don't know what kind of potential there phone has right at this moment.
Unlike IOS which is one form of hardware that anyone can jump on and play a game, regardless of it's release date and the current technology in their slightly newer Ipod Touch or Ipad.
But, I think that's going to change. Tablets are coming out from all kinds of manufactures and a lot of people are looking to jump in on the excitement. Nvidia is making a quad core processor and gpu (Kal-El) that is really showing a lot of performance benchmarks.
So I do think the market is going to get bigger, better and more lucrative as the serious gamers starting switching to tablets for their gaming needs.
But again... Do remember that it's going to take awhile as tablets still aren't a replacement for a computer and they still don't trump little johnny and susie's want of the PS Vita or 3DS.
Thank you for your very comprehensive answer! Sounds like I'll stick to PC and console game dev a bit longer before dipping into the Android zone. I really love the potential of the device but I concur that the demand won't exceed other platform's that are already very lucrative.
Thank you again for your response
Peace
I think 3D cell phone gaming is a hugely untapped market that will see some hugely major growth in the next few years. I myself just purchased a Sony Xperia Play. I don't think the Play will be a massive hit, but I think it will set the stage to get people seriously thinking about 3D gaming on their phones. By the time the Play 2 comes around, I think we are going to start seeing a lot more interest in 3d gaming on people's cellular devices.
we're seeing official apps for everything else, but what about a playstation network app? theres apps to support googles gtalk and google's youtube why not a playstation network app? i really dont care the xbox integration since i have a ps3
That would depend on if MS wants to support a rival gaming platform. Possibly, if they wanted to draw more people into the phone and thus the ecosystem, picking up new xboxers along the way.
Possibly not if the benefits/profit/new users versus the detriments are not heavily weighted toward the beneficial side. But many who own the PS3 also have an Xbox. I, personally, have neither. But, if I ever bought one, it'd be an Xbox. I'm just not gonna pay $500-$600 for a video game console (PS3).
I don't think there is anything stopping someone from creating an app but as far as native support I believe there is no chance in hell it's going to happen. This is about ecosystems and Microsoft has their own.
Eventually as WP7 gains traction Sony will have to address it with some type of App. I wouldn't expect gaming integration with PS3 because XBL is deeply rooted in.

I think he meant the PlayStation Suite App, just like the one for iPhone/iPod Touch and Android. The only thing the app does is let you see who's online and what are they playing, some news, blogs, and media stuff.
It depends on either Sony and Microsoft whether they should build an app for WP7, but the PS Suite app you see on iPod/iPhones doesn't let you play PS games, its rather like a social app, so Sony might develop one for WP7 and Microsoft might approve it as well since it will less likely/have no affect on gaming on WP7.
Just think of it as the IGN app on WP7.

I don't understand what you mean by violating forum rules. are you advocating cracked apps? or have you cracked an app and added some spyware, now you're trying to get us to use it with your *wink wink* cloak and dagger routine?
FYI, Pocket Legends is a 3D android MMO that works on gTab, and you never need to pay (it's a freemium business model, you can pay to support the developer if you want). so I don't see the basis for some of Order and Chaos's claims.
Well the link to download the game I dont think i can post because it is a cracked version. the client check has been removed so that it will run on any system but it is only optimized for the ones listed. the game you have to pay for (i payed for it on my phone but of course could not download it on the g-tablet) so providing a link for software you have to pay for that is cracked i dont think would do any good, and i think it is against the forum rules (ill check when i get to work).
I have played Pocket legends for a while because i was looking for something that i could play on my phone believe you me! its fun however i have been VERY addicted to Order and Chaos way beyond pocket legends. Its true you do have to pay to play but the first patch is coming out here shortly and they SAY they are adding more content in the future only time will tell. However $2.99 for 6 months of play i dont mind paying that for something that i seem to log into every time i get a chance. Unlike wow i can log in when i have the chance and not have to brace myself for time travel (logging in for 5 min and ends up being a few hours). and you dont have to buy anything in the game if you dont want to but its optional. I have yet to pay for gold or gems to make the game easier (guess I am old school and like to grind away) and of course some of the best stuff in the game is crafted and quested so its not as though you can just buy your way through.
I play the game mainly on my Inspire and have had it run over the Edge network with a little lag. but it runs fine on 3G and definitely runs VERY well over WiFi depending on what connection you use for your wifi. Its true pocket legends is free however i dont think having to buy 'access to areas' is a good business model, or buying a new face. i would put it this way Hands down Order and Chaos is for those who want a more PC orientated game that's mobile.
Pocket Legends is good if you just looking for something to burn a few min. Order and Chaos is a good game and not for everyone just as wow isn't a game for everyone. I keep referencing wow because O&C is a clone of it (Gameloft is definitely known for Clone's!). Only time will tell if this game can keep up with how Pocket Legends in terms of keeping people playing though. But for now it has me and I am addicted... ,*stands up from his chair* 'Hi My name is Darkbluexplorer, and I am addicted to Order and Chaos Online.' (Yes some semblance of a person in a AAA meeting)
not quite 98% for me
I think I tried that same version but it runs so choppy most of the time and the graphics are glitchy at times. I've emailed gameloft a coupe times asking for gtab versions so I can pay for a full working version
Yep it's def not 100% but playable to a point

Hey guys, not sure if anyone here migrated from Windows Mobile (as I did) or from iOS but there is this fantastic RTS developer called Isotope244 famous for their Machines at War series (Land Sea Air Warfare for those iOS people, technically MaW2) is now at work on Machines at War 3 and so far we're still not seeing any Android love. But, if you look back to an old Twitter question asked last year Isotope244 did seem interested in possibly branching out into Android. I think they haven't seen much interest in Android ports from their fans but I just contacted them on Facebook asking for support and I hope others will as well; who knows, we might have our first truly solid RTS on Android.

So that means 1337likes for port or?

We need this badly.
I love the fact that I can totally control my life with a few stocks of the keys on my key pad. Syncing with my Google account and I'm good to go. To appointments, meetings, music, games, and apps. Keeping in touch with friends is a breeze with Google+. Having multiplied my android devices in the past two years from just having a smartphone to tablets and on going technologies that allow connection to t.v. one doesn't even need any other source for entertainment with unlimited data I can watch what I want at anytime.I can buy a game on my phone then play it on my tablet and also play the game with my Xbox controller on my smartphone or tablet. I really think Google doesn't do a good job at upselling there ecosystem as much as Apple does. But to be honest I at one time owned both a Apple computer and iPhone combo at the same time. And since then I don't any more not saying there bad products just not in my price range any more to purchase Apple products at this time and present. Anyways on to Google and there ecosystem love it more people own pc's then other operating systems. So you can see my point or actually think about it and agree.
