Hello all, I am looking for a small group of developers looking to make an opensource port for the HP touchpad. I currently have an android tablet, and I'm looking to port android to this cheap yet powerful(debatable) tablet!
add me on skype: Rockinoutt93
look forward to working with you guys/Gals!
make it happen!
there is already a thread discussing this
Join the group from above, the more smart people working on this the better for the community. There will be some nice rewards for you if you are able to port it first and by yourself though....
will see what I can do =3
well based on the community gathering here im gonna go buy one at 99 bones i cant really go wrong.

For $99, even if it has no apps to download it's still a good deal. Much better than many of the nameless single-core Froyo Android tablets selling at your local pharmacy. None of those is as cheap as $99 btw.
I haven't been developing for very long, and am still learning, but I am willing to help with this project to the best of my abilities. I am also willing to donate to those who help this project become a reality.
I love you guys!!!!!
Best $99 ever spent

I just bought a couple 32gb TouchPads. Let me know how I can help!
I cannot post a link but there is a group of people working on this project over on rootzwiki. Might be nice if everyone got together.. Or possible had a race
Rumor also has it that the dev team over ay Cyanogen is working on developing a port for this as well. So there is definitely a lot of interest in this. There are even some dev teams that are trying to get Ubuntu/Linux to run as well.
I think that since someone was able to run gingerbread on the Pre that this should be something that someone could pull off. We will just have to keep supporting the developers and this will be an amazing accomplishment.

I lol'd at the "The TouchPad is the new HD2." Luckily, I have both now.
Also, I think the new name for the TouchPad should be the LootPad. I'm not sure how your guys' experiences were at where you bought it but it felt like a moment of panic on the Titanic as it was sinking.
I hope this thread will remain on-track with discussions of porting Android. The other thread started on that topic is a total mess now, as 95% of the 34 pages are about where to buy the touchpad now.
Very interested in following a genuine discussion on an Android port. I have an HD2 and can't believe how perfect the CM7 (and earlier Froyo) port is. You can't even tell it was ever a WM 6.5 phone.
This is already going on at Touchdroid. Might be a good idea to copy and paste their progress here. They only ask that if you're not deving, don't post, they have a lot going on. Link to thread below

Why are we not getting official cm7 support along with nighlies? Cm is everywhere and is the best rom. Sure would be nice to see 2.3.1 but offical support would be great.

I don't want to be a AH (<-- Since you think we are all one) here, but why are you asking the same thing over and over when you are getting the same answers?
There are only so many times you hit your head on a wall before deciding it hurts like hell and you should stop.
Unless YOU, want to step up and start creating roms, you will have to sit patiently with EVERYONE and wait for it to happen.
I have wasted enough time on this post, a mod should lock it before a flame war starts.
No answers are ever made available just a lot of complaining about asking questions. All the 'great' and 'hardworking' developers are just a few and not really at the caliper of the CM team, so xda for g tablet is no longer a reference. I'm sure there will be plenty more non-answers, that's okay because you little boys and girls continue playing in the sand box.
If you had read around Gojimi is the developer doing the official CM build (Going to merge Vegan with CM) Last I heard he had to order parts to get his development machine up and running. Please try and do some some searching and reading before starting a thread that sounds like whining. If your not happy at the pace things develop go buy an ipad and you wont have to worry about it anymore.

No the problem is you ask questions that have been asked over and over again without looking first and then you insult us by calling us AH's and little boys and girls. If XDA is not a reference for GTab anymore then march your a$$ over to cyanogen and ask for an ETA on cm7. Cyangenmod loves it when people ask for ETA's on their site. Us little boys and girls will stay in our sandbox and enjoy getting the next round of whatever rom we want including cm7. If you don't want to wait then compile your own rom. Otherwise try reading a little before posting your ignorance and maybe you might learn to do something on your own without it being spoon fed to you.
BTW....my cm7 is 2 days old....I compiled it myself from source

Believe it or not, the gTablet has WAY more official support for CM7 than other tablets. And our developers are going out of their way to do what they can. GoJimi has submitted some changes and commits for gTablet code and is waiting on process - which is a good thing.
"Cm is everywhere" - wrong. It's not. It is currently only supported on 13 devices - and doesn't just appear because someone snaps their fingers! It takes someone having a device to test, someone who has the skills or willing to learn, etc.
Maybe you should read what Cyanogen posted about essentially your questions/complaints/whines/whatever. It's found here.
And to that point - there has been some VERY helpful information on how to compile CM7 for the Harmony (gTablet)... the old adage still holds...
"Give a man a fish [CM7 build] and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish [build his own CM7 build for himself] and you feed him for a lifetime."
Go and do thou likewise....

I'm not sure there are a lot of expectations here to be let down. We know that in most cases you probably wouldn't be able to offer us beta, or even alpha firmware and software to develop with or on. RC firmware and software would be just as much out of the question so we're down to what is already out, or something that is leaked by people friendly to the development communities that take the chance of getting in to a lot of trouble. So I don't really know what you have to offer yet. I am curious to find out, though.
Dear john, you have sparked a lot of interest, we are drooling at the mouth do you have any gingerbread for us, or dare I speak of honeycomb? ;-)

"IF" this where to happen it would be a good thing for both samsung and xda for the simple fact that it would help us make better mods for the samsung community and would allow samsung to release things that are more open to modding and customizations that all of us around here love and enjoy making (or in my case learning to make)...hope all goes well with this.
I am a dubious person and do not have expectations as I am still uncertain as to your intentions and more importantly you identity.
But if all is as you say I would take back to the powers that be, many are obviously unhappy with having to run outdated software in the form of the OS on what was at the time of purchase cutting edge hardware.
Give us a option. Give us a way to open the phone up and flash a AOSP option. A more Nexus-ish approach would be fantastic.
The Mainstream will have what they require in a stock configuration and we the ones that know what the potential of the device is can help you in pushing it to its limits.
Well I'm trying to get my post count up so I can comment in development. Anywho kudos to samsung.
Thanks again John, I'm excited and look forward to hearing your announcement!

Honeycomb is made for tablets so I don't think that really helps us. And I highly doubt Samsung is going to release Gingerbread directly to XDA if at all.

maybe samsung will use us for testing and maybe some tweaking...that would give us a chance to develop on it before its officially released and we would just plain out have it early, cause if you give the devs here like 2 weeks with just about anything it will be fully modded and running to its full potential!!!
props to xda devs!!!

Hopefully their next approach works out better, they should have known better than to open a topic up to the entire forum
They should probably have moderator's from each device take questions from their users, then they could collaborate and get only the good questions answered. (and you wouldn't have to deal with trolls/flames/etc.)

I suppose the question *since we can't ask specifics* is....
What can you do to help us and or what tools can you provide to the DEVs to help us get every bit of Awesome out of the device that we can.
Put the ball in your court.
Glad THIS thread is still open...
(Does SamsungJohn know how forums work?!?)
ANYhoo... I'm a give 'em enough rope to hang themselves kinda guy and I've actually been recommending the Mesmerize & Fascinate to friends that need new phones based solely on the great XDA community and what they can get those phones to do using only a bread tie, three pennies, and a jar of Cheez Wiz. Kudos to the devs once again!
I had no delusions that Samsung was a great manufacturer... my TV and DVD/home theater unit have had their share of problems... and I was also aware of the OS update delays in other product lines before I got my phone so that wasn't a big surprise either. BUT, I got in on the free phone thing through USCC and (if I EVER get my $80 rebate) I'll still consider being a Mesmerize owner/user a WIN.
What I see here is a classic example of a company that has the OBVIOUS solution within their grasp and they are actively choosing to find an alternative to it that will provide them SHORT TERM monetary gains. They have set themselves up for failure and they have only themselves to blame. Here's a vocabulary lesson for SamsungJohn et al... crowdsourcing
Guys if you haven't read through it, that topic was closed by a moderator because it was an experiment that failed miserably. (because the general XDA population isn't very good at reading and following instruction, and it turned into a huge flamefest.)
John has been confirmed by several sources to be who he says he is (at least works for samsung) and is here working with the XDA administration to (in an organized way) swap feedback with the developing community (on all samsung products).
On a side note Supercurio has been in correspondence with Korean Samsung and has been also pushing for this very thing to happen, but from what I've read i'ts pure coincidence that John arrived when he did.
Anyway, sounds to me like we need to be patient as information IS coming as soon as they figure out the best way to go about this whole thing. This is how I've taken things from what I've read today, don't quote me....

In all fairness Crowdsourceing is what the whole AOSP is about. Android was and is developed to be Open Source. So if a company is reaching out to the community it can't be all bad.
I just think that for the most part a lot of us here are end users.
While I am sure that others like me want to, and strive to learn more, we simply will not be on a par with the current crop of DEVs as they progress as well.
I think the idea of a couple DEVs from each of the respective forums of the variations of the SGS platforms being in contact is a smart idea.
Dcows, Phidelt, and of course JT and many of the OPs in the Samsung Fascinate IRC channel would be obvious choices.
In fact a meeting of the minds in a channel of choice with only participants having voice would be nice as well.
I do understand and hope that SamsungJohn does know as well that most here are simply end users and just wanna know when we will get xxx or yyy ..
I will now go back to my corner get my Java Text out and see if I can learn, learn, learn....
If samsung really wants to get in good with the developement community, they would be wise to make it entirely official, and go to engadget or someone with a press release. If you want to gain our trust, give everyone the AOSP build.
Do I want sammy to be community-minded? Absolutely.
Am I going to trust one guy who says he works for our manufacturer? Well, let's get to the root of that. Do I trust the company who created out hardware? Not at all.

Yeah I frequent the irc with those guys and we're always willing to help people... I think a lot of people come to forums just to get help and information rather than to develop and theme and stuff like we do. It would probably be more beneficial for Samsungjohn to maybe set up a date on the irc and say like "I will be on from x time to y time" and then people can get on and ask questions and talk about things, and more of the power users who use the irc regularly will get a chance to maybe learn some stuff or help out Samsung.
It would also make it much easier to control, if things get out of hand then the OPs can simply kick or ban the culprits.

I've been trying my hardest contacting many people to get development started with this phone. Since not many Experienced Devs would be looking the way of this phone i've been trying to reach out.
I Contacted AndroidSpin as well and they are very well known android news site (which i check everyday) and managed to get an article out about helping with development with our phone (awsome, thanks AndroidSpin!) See the Article Here
Hopefully in the Near future we will have a working recovery and ROMs/Mods/Themes Rolling out. A Very experienced Dev has Contacted me Back Saying he is Willing to Help but nothing is promised as he doesnt have a Sidekick 4G at hand. But he is willing to make a working recovery for us so lets see what happens .
He will Definitely need testers.. i will be one ofcourse hope others are interested in seeing development stir up over here aswell !
nice to hear about.....i have been checked this 4rum everyday to looking for a news but still......hopefully something will come out soon....:x im willing to be the tester for this as well.....
I just want to say thank you to all of you working on this. As a former Hiptop user and open-source enthusiast, I took issue with the closed platform that Danger had installed on it and ended up ditching it. When I heard the new Sidekicks would be running Android I jumped at the chance to have one, only to find out that development was lacking interest due to the stigma of the old Hiptops as phones for teenagers. It's wonderful to see more people getting interested in this and I hope to help as much as I can in the future. Thank everyone again and happy hacking to you all!
willing to help
I'm very interested in getting development going for this phone as well, I don't have the time or the skill set to cook roms myself but I am more than willing to test and give feedback. I know a lot of devs aren't interested since they spent last year with the galaxy s line of phones and there are new dual cores to play with, but I think this phone is really unique and could definitely have a big following because of the fact that it is soo different than the sea of slabs out there. I hope development picks up, there are plenty of custom roms out there already built for the galaxy s line that would only need to be tweaked to work with this device so hopefully that picks up soon.
I'm very interested in helping with development, came from the G1 and had fun with that. I was trying to figure out how to compile ClockworkMod but because Samsung uses initRamFS rather than a regular makefile, I was unable to figure it out. I'm very open to testing and trying to help as best I can with developing on this phone, feel free to e-mail me if anyone has any need to test anything, I'm always checking my e-mail. sduvick AT gmail.com. For those who understand the compiling of clockworkmod, I would suggest working from the Vibrant version, as the buttons are all mapped right, we just need to add the storage driver so that the sdcard can be mounted.
I would love to be a tester please keep me posted.

So the big release is tomorrow for the Ubuntu for phone release for the GNexus and N4.... Anyone planning on porting this for us? I would really love to have Ubuntu on my phone as I can run my 3d printer software on my phone instead of buying another laptop for the garage. I am real excited about the Ubuntu phone though I wish we had a x86 cpu so we could run wine. Speaking of wine...... they are developing it for Android though it seems it is about a year away.
Would it be possible to create a dual boot Android/Ubuntu like the HD2 or are we too short on internal storage?
Wow, don't want much?? I am sure when it is released and we have a chance to see it we may be able to port it.. Until then enjoy what we have...
Oh count on a nice donation if we get Ubuntu working. Double that for a dual boot. I had Ubuntu on my old Glacier but I cant seem to get it to work well with the Blaze. I should of noted it wasnt a free request
Release date's were issued today
Images and open source code for the Touch Developer Preview of Ubuntu will be published on Thursday 21st February, supporting the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 smartphones. But more important than the release of two pre-compiled images will be a mass of un-compiled code. On the same day that Nexus owners face an ‘Android of Shiny New Preview’ dilemma, the Ubuntu Phone source code will also be made available.
This ‘milestone’ will be significant for the Ubuntu Phone project as it will mark the first that developers can dive in to the code. As an open-source project, devs will able to fix, refine and add features, as well as port it to run on other devices
Great! Well my offer is still there, put me down for $20 at least for a decent working port for the first dev/team to do it. We got some great devs here, I know it wont take too long.
Honestly man, no one is going to care that you have a $20 sitting there waiting to maybe be thrown into a developer's donate box in the future. Fact of the matter is, people that do stuff for phones do it because they like to do it. Their little donation button has nothing to do with giving them incentive to do anything, it's that they would be willing to spend more time working on a device, but it really is much easier to do with the device in hand.
Then you have the simple obvious fact that porting things takes a lot of work...the donate buttons there are to help a dev recover costs, and as often jokingly said, "Buy them a beer"....that's about it.
Say what you will about the absurdity of asking if Ubuntu will be ported to the Blaze, before the OS is even available to anyone, but to say, "I got money, I got money, I got money!" probably just comes off as a little insulting.
Maybe insulting is a bit excessive, but annoying surely fits.

Wow, man calm down. the money is just to show the developer how much they mean to community. To show the support or a way to build up hope for hard ideas to come to life. He's not waiving the money like he's trying to buy their work, just showing how much he cares.
On Friday, 22nd February we are going to take the wraps off the Ubuntu Touch Porting Guide, which will go into detail how Ubuntu Touch can be ported to other devices.
This will be a great way to get involved and get Ubuntu onto all kinds of devices.

porting information can be found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting
We are going to be stuck though until we can get a working kernel for cm10.1 as ubuntu for phone is based off of it...
Until then I have left this alone.. We really need a Kernel Dev here to figure out our issue.. I have been working on it for weeks trying to figure it out.
I know it has to do with the ramdisk and how 4.2.2 stores and looks at the files...

Even if the port was not very functional.
I know our Xoom is getting a bit long in the tooth, but it still is one of the finest equipped pieces of hardware out there. I've been using the Omnirom 4.4.4 iteration for many months now, and love it.
How many tablets can you name that have external sdcard,HDMI, and USB capability besides the normative features most tablets have.
I think the Xoom might just might have a very good future with the next iteration of Android, Lollipop. I'd love to be able to
work on this, but if I did it, I'd have to find someone who would loan me a Xoom they have laying around unused for an extended period of time.
I don't know, but the more I think of it the more excited I become.
That's not how it works...... You are a user not a developer.... I will see what can be done when sources come out but no this is a scam! Why get a Xoom if you already have one? From a account with no rom threads started

Wasn't a scam Cameron. I have 1 Xoom that is my primary computing device with anything having to do with mobile devices. I will not have it's useability compromised.
By the way, long ago I wrote code for the Atari ST, STacy and Falcon. In the last few hours I have been able to get a second Xoom from a friend locally (he's not using it, and thought it was bricked-It wasn't, just needed help-I've got working) once I get my friend's Xoom up to speed and brush up on my coding skills I should be able to help.
Honestly, I'm 74 years old and just tired and busy enough that I'd rather not take away from my limited time to become a developer again. At this time I'd like to just be a user and return my friend's fully working Xoom to him
Cameron, It seemed like most of the developers had just gone into hiding and I was hoping to generate interest from the community..
You don't know me, or really know much about me. If you did, you'd know that I wasn't attempting to scam anyone. In fact, saying that my goal was to scam is almost criminal and libelous, but I'm not one to easily take take offense.
Just please don't do a rush to judgement again. Once you make such statements they aren't easily retracted.
I look forward to hearing from you soon. Your friend,
Rob

Wasn't a scam Cameron. I have 1 Xoom that is my primary computing device with anything having to do with mobile devices. I will not have it's useability compromised.
By the way, long ago I wrote code for the Atari ST, STacy and Falcon. I am simply a "user" also but I can attest to the fact that I have seen numerous posts from Kingsman1 in other Xoom forums and he is always there to help others with questions or problems they are having with their tablet.

Thanks for the vote of confidence my friend. The Lollipop Software Development Kit (SDK) is out there. I think that I'm going to hide and watch(though I am available at any time) as far as development is concerned. There are many of us who need help, including me from time to time. I'll go back to helping when I can.
Blessings to all,
Rob

And add another vote from me - I have seen and read many a helpful Kingsman post in these forums - I wish I had some sort of useful skills other than flashing other peoples hard work or I would help - hope this generates the desired response from some other motivated developers - best of luck Sir Rob -

Since being on IOS since 2011 I haven't used this account ; I got on here to say thank you; you are an inspiration for the ages. As our knowledge and experience becomes "mature" it's good to see that young or wise by years; we can all work together.
By the way,
I do have a second Xoom of my own not, and am running Omnirom 5.1.1 Alpha on it. At the moment, I'm looking to see what it can, and can't do. I hope to be able to help Schischu develop this into a stable, and very complete Rom now. Even so, this alpha is very polished, fast, and smooth.
I think we're gonna love it.
Blessings,
Rob
