A few months ago I bought a HTC EVO. It is my first smart phone. I am not what I would describe as a heavy user.... My web/phone mix is about 40/60.
I was referred to this site from guys in my car club. They recommend some sort of rooting? and kernel? for battery life....
My batt life sucks and is unreliable when I'm on the move. Even a short drive with virtually no use will kill my battery. I haven't tried the recalibration. I just actually read about that process but frankly I don't understand the directions 100%.
What do I NEED to do to this thing in order to keep it performing top tier and extend my battery life?
Should I remove my advanced task killer? What about antivirus?
I am super computer ignorant. Cars are my thing, computers not so much. What the hell is a root? What is a kernel? What is removing sense? ROM meaning Read Only Memory? Is this something I need to physically add to my device? Will I run into support issues after all this stuff?
I need some solid, straight forward advice in lamen words about what I need to properly maintain the software on this thing.
Thanks a bunch!!!
I realize this may not be the best section for my question.....
Mods/Admin can you move this thread to the Android section that would be the most appropriate?

Ok, well i dont have an evo i have a mt3g but i will tell you a few things. There are a lot of people that say task killers do more harm than good. Android already has a way of killing tasks on its own. Antivirus never caused an issue for me. If you have no interest on computers or knowing your phone that personally i would not suggest you root. Rooting gives you super user permissions. Basically an all access pass. Of course they have issues as nothing is perfect. You can see that from running into issues stock. A kernel if i understand correctly is what controls the communication between the software and the hardware. Some have better battery life than others. You have to be rooted to flash them though. Setcpu can also control your processor speed for better battery control. Again you need root to use it. Sense is what your phone runs on stock and some people like it others dont. Rom- Yes read only memory. There are different ones you can flash to totally change your phone. They run different on everything as well as battery life, options, look, feel ect. Again you need root to flash custom Roms.
Hope this helps. Also you can go to the evo section here and read all the info you want on rooting, roms, flashing, battery issues, ect.
This should have been in evo Q&A section. Not complaining or anything strictly fyi so you know next time and where to look for your info.
Hello, I have a Samsung Charge running 2.2. As everyone knows, the stock version of this phone has a tone of pre-installed apps that can't be removed.
I'm thinking about rooting the phone and flashing with a custom ROM that lacks whoreware and possibly improves battery life.
I'm currently getting around 10 hours on battery with light to moderate usage. On average, I'm probably around 30 minutes talk time and the occasional MMS. I'm set up for Exchange push, I keeep my data radio set to CDMA even though I'm in a 4G area, I have GPS and WiFi turned off unless I have a demand for them, and my screen brightness is set almost as low as it will go.
I would like to hopefully get 10 to 15 percent improvement on battery life and removal of unwated apps.
I had the original Droid for around 2 years and I have only had the Charge for a few days. I have never rooted a phone, but I've tried to do as much reading as possible to understand the benefits, risks and procedures.
I've read a few threads on calibrating the battery and volting (both of which require rooting I'm guessing), but have read conflicting posts about the actual benefit of battery calibration on these devices.
If anyone out there has tweaked this thing and realized a significant benefit while maintaing stability, I would most appreciate any guidence
Thx,
You should definitely get better battery life. I send a lot of texts and will do some gaming and such during the day, I would call it moderate use.
With Gummy 2.0 I'm getting around 24 hours of batter life, sometimes longer depending on how much texting I do.
GummyCharged 2.0 (and by extension imoseyon's LeanKernel), PROPER battery calibration, undervolting, and 3G only, will all help.

That.
If you do all of that you can EASILY get a day of heavy usage. Especially the 3g, disabling 4g can double your battery life.
Much appreciated. Now, I've got three good recommendations for GummyCharge, so here come the follow up questions given I've never rooted an android phone.
1. I should CWM for recovery?
2. Is this a flash of only the ROM or will there be a kernel flash also?
3. I would run Odin to perform the flash?
4. Should I expect basic settings for modem to remain in tact (If the flash is successful)?
5. Once flashed, the phone will basically enter setup mode like it's been set to factory default?
6. This is the big one. Can someone post all of the filenames that were used to flash to GummyCharge, i.e., recovery, rom, kernel?
I sincerely appreciate it.

The whole step by step is in the roll up sticky and the GC thread.
BUUUT, flash GummyCharged 1.9.1 with Odin, then flash 2.0 in CWM. Done. You'll lose all your stuff though, no way around it.

Moving to Q&A
Please read this before you go crazy on me saying I haven't searched for this because I have. I've updated from every ROM of ICS thats dropped after reading up on them and the fastest and best working everyday ROM for ICS is BrainMaster's ICSv5 with Franco's Kernel 11/25. I haven't tried 11/26 but I've read the colors are much better on 25 and I believe it because its the best my screen has ever looked. SHARP!
So here's my issue. I want this as an everyday user, and I'm sure it can be. I just need to know how to set up the battery so that it lasts longer. I just restarted my phone and cleared all the battery info. Before I unplugged it at 6:30pm EST I had 91%. After very, very minor use (looked up the number for Home Depot and downloaded Amazon Market) I got back home at 9:30 and my battery was at 39%. Thats 60% in 3 hours. Thats terrible. How can I adjust the batter life? Can I use NSTools to do so or do I need to change code? I don't want to change the kernel completely because the colors truly are AMAZING with this version.
Please let me know, and thank you in advance!
Best regards,
Tula
Well, which app or function specifically is causing the drain? Did you look at the battery usage? Were you in an area with poor signal reception?
Before you trash a rom and kernel with a poorly conceived thread, try troubleshooting the problem.

For what it's worth, the only time I've gotten that kind of battery life is when a NFC process decided to start and run nonstop. No idea why it was running (particularly since I don't have Wallet configured), but since then I keep NFC disabled.
When that happened it was similar battery life - lost about 70% in 3 1/2 hours.
I never once trashed the ROM or the kernel? What are you talking about? Before reading into something for more than what it is you should take it for what it is. I don't know what the problem is, everyone else seems to be having a great amount of battery life. I'm asking on here, in this forum, because I figured someone (maybe a programmer who knows these things) can tell me how to "properly" config it. Idk what the deal is with it but I was looking for insight. I love the ROM and the kernel and I do believe I stated in the post that I wanted to keep it as a daily user. SO, either you can help me and teach me how to fix the problem or teach me to give you what info you need or do me a favor and don't waste my time. I'm looking for answers or suggestions. Not accusations and negativity.
"Poorly concieved thread!" Whats "poorly conceived" about it? The fact that I reached out on a FORUM and asked for HELP? Go comment on somebody else with that bullsh*t.
Reread your thread title; calling something "garbage" is not trashing it?
Reread and answer the questions asked in post #2. Nobody can do anything to help if you don't provide basic information or perform rudimentary problem-solving procedure.

Well man what i did with mine was calibrated the battery which means charge the battery completely then boot into recovery wipe battery stats then unplug and reboot then use it for 5 mins then charge fully again then unplug and drain completely till it shuts off on its own then fully charge again and it should be calibrated.. sounds like alot.. i kno lol but trust me it works and then if ur battery life doesnt extend after that (which it should) then i would look at what it is thats using the most matter (menu>settings>battery and go from there.. also make sure u have all the apps that will allow u to move to sd moved there it keeps them from running in the background and also make sure ur screen brightness is set low.. i took my auto brightness off and just turned it down just bright enough to see.. i know the colors looks fly like a bag of skittles when u got the brightness up wit franco kernel but it kills battery lol. hopefully that works for u pimpin and sorry for the novel lol just wanted to give u a few options to try.
JG & Freshie, thank you. And Braneless, you must be Braneless, because if YOU could read you'd see that my title says BATTERY LIFE is garbage. Not the ROM or the Kernel. BATTERY LIFE!
You seriously are 0 for 2 with trying to make me look like an idiot. I guess thats why you have almost 600 post and only 50 some odd thanks. Because half the time you're just bashing people trying to make it seem like you know it all when you can't even read a title correctly.
As far as the battery, I followed your instructions JG and also I started from the beginning and deleted all installs and reset to factory. I then installed each ROM from v1 all the way up and now EVERYTHING works and I got almost 2 hours out of my phone today and used 9%! WHOOHOOO!
Thanks again to the read Googlers who want to HELP OUT instead of trying to make people look like idiots.
AWESOME!
I had this problem too, but in my case it was the Google Wallet app. It drained the my battery in like 4 hours. After uninstalling it, all went back to normal.
Now if you said battery life on a rom kernel combo was FANTASTIC.
What would that imply? Thanks guys etc.
You go through all the trouble to make the thread but not spend a couple seconds to check what actually used up the battery.
Omfg this thread title just made lol all over the place haha

I'd recommend trying out Nexus MV 2.xx its the best daily driver so far. battery will make it through the day, i used it for a quite a while. Now trying out the alpha 13, but will go back to MV if this doesn't cut it. I tried BM too but didnt notice too much difference from Kwiboo and the earlier CM9 A 11.
my friend i work with has had an inspire for around 8 months. her battery from 100% only lasts about 2 hours at most with no use or very mild use. i did figure out that it stays awake and never sleeps. im new to the inspire but not new to android should i just flash the gold card and then flash her a custom rom to help this. has anyone else had this problem with the inspire? thanks for any help
Should we assume you've already checked Settings>Display>Screen timeout to make sure it's not set to "never turn off"?
Also, if you're going to root it, use ace hack kit. That is the preferred/recommended method for the Inspire.

what do you mean flash the gold card? I'm assuming you'r rooted already if you're talking about a gold card and flashing a new rom. Battery drain is also a tricky thing since its very subjective, however 2 hours for a complete 100% drain is a little absurd lol. Best bet if you're rooted of course, is to have her do the following:
1. Full wipe the phone...i.e. through recovery wipe data, cache, dalvik cache and battery stats
2. Flash a new rom (I won't get into which you should use, the dev section is there for you to read and have her figure out what she wants)
3. have her calibrate the battery properly which is done by downloading current widget and make it a widget which will display the mA. Charge until the mA is zero. download battery calibration app and once the mA hits zero run the battery calibration app and follow the directions there.
4. there are a lot of threads dedicated to reducing battery drain, I know Android Revolution in their q&a section has a lot of good links, check them out.
5. you can use apps like juice defender, green power or you can try undervolting.
Again, this assumes you know how to flash a rom and are rooted, if you aren't rooted, stroll over to the dev section and see the hack kit if you do want to root. I'm using Absolution 3.0 and from 100% I can go about 30 hours or so with using facebook (avg about 1-3 hours total in that span), web (casual xda browsing), games (1-3 hours in that 30 hour or so span), texting(a lot lol), phone calls (5-6 lengthy calls, 10+ minutes)
thank yall for your answers she is not rooted but i think we are gona take care of that tonight. i do know how to flash and run script all that good stuff so we will try all the things suggested. i blve we will use the ace hack kit also and try a new rom. and rly thanks for the quick responses

The Ace Hack Kit is the best/easiest way to root the inspire, attn1 has done a great job and it has become a very easy tool if you read everything and follow the directions to the T. Good luck man!
I noticed you talking about a gold card. DO NOT attempt to do this. Ace hack kit has integrated the gold card into the hack kit process so all you need is the kit. It's really easy nowadays.
full reset fixed the wakelock problem
Well,I' ve seen many people ask this question, on random forums, so I'm just copy-pasting a post I made somewhere
else, and that's just about it.
Anyway, why do all of you prefer going after other apps that do all the work for you?. Anyway, seeing as none of them ended up working for you #evil laugh# , you could always do this.
TheWeirdOne's guide to battery calibration,
for dummies.
1) Get your battery charged (yes, that's a
hundred percent , to you)
2) Now, I'm assuming that all of you have a
version of CWM that replaced the crappy
stock recovery, so boot into recovery.
(Now, each phone has a different zip for flashing cwm, so I guess you'll have to hunt that out by yourself, anyway -__- Mine's
running on a version of five, but four
should work swell, too)
3) Now, go to Advanced, and then choose
'wipe battery stats.'
Ta-Da, and that's about it! . Oh, and
another thing. Once you Do that, DO NOT, I
repeat, do not charge your phone, just wait
for the battery to run out, and that's about
it.
Ps. My phone lasts for about one-and- a-
half to two days, right now, and that' s not
on standby, to those sarcastic ones out
there.
And here's the usual 'Oooh, if I actually
helped one of you guys out, please click
that big, 'thanks button, naw?'
Read this somewhere but thanks anyway
That simple
Anothe roveral guide also.
Please read an article I wrote about how to extend your battery life with other methods also.
Good luck!

I don't think there is any way to do that. Btw, going by your join date, it's assumable that your phone is more than a year old. So, why don't you root your phone.
Trust me... The juice is worth the squeeze. I myself own a GT-i9003. And I rooted it 3 months after buying it. :-D

I charged my phone after wiping battery stats some times ago, and it went weird, battery drops at a certain percent while I was using it
all battery stats are for is to collect and analyze battery usage per app basic on your Android devices. wiping stats does nothing to improve battery life or charge capacity at all.
few things.
1. when charging the phone does it need to be off?
2. wiping the battery status increase battery life or just the status? just trying to clear up my questions.
thanks in advance.

1.It doesn't matter whether the phone is turned on or not when charging (For me..)
2.Wiping battery stats does not increase battery life. It just resets the battery status and that's all.
