[Q] Zapping and Extended Life Battery... should I root?

Hello All,
I've got a Droid X with the handy and convenient one-click root method Z4root. However, my wife's Droid Charge is an entirely different story. So far I haven't rooted it because I'm hoping to use that as a last resort (I don't want to brick her phone).
She was having some trouble with battery life, so she bought a Samsung extended life battery. Instead of her phone dying within 4 hours of a full charge it could make it pretty much all day. But this week all of a sudden, even with that, she's back down to 6 hours, if that.
Early on when she got the phone I downloaded Advanced Task Killer for her and gave her some basic tips (low brightness, no mobile data, etc.), but I'm at a loss. I'm not sure if it's the GB update or what. I'm almost ready to root her phone and roll it back to Froyo because I think that's part of the problem, but I'm at a loss. Do you guys have any suggestions? Or is rooting, battery calibrating, and cleaning out bloatware my only option? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks Droid experts!!!

Don't use advanced task killer first of all. It will probably reduce battery life. GB update has made the battery better in all situations.

Whether or not to root is really up to you however if you do decide to root it is actually quite easy to root EP4D(the latest OTA update). Here is an easy to follow write up that I did:

Personally I rooted my phone and I have loved it. When I was using stock rom debloating did help some with my battery life. The biggest difference I found however when when I flashed eclipse and imnuts pbj EP4D kernel on to my phone. Eclipse is an awesome rom that is already debloated and has been tweaked to run super smooth. Imnuts pbj kernel has lots of great performance and power saving features(for example the ability to undervolt). Running stock I would get about 8 hours of moderate use from my standard battery(1600mah) and 4 hours of heavy use. Running Eclipse with imnuts kernel I get 18-20 hours moderate use and 8-10 hours heavy use.

calibrating the battery would probably help. id check to see whats running; gps, wifi, bt, etc. also it could be a rogue app that is sucking up all the juice. juice defender could help and if u have no use for location apps u can go into setting/location and turn off stand alone gps, google location, and vzw location. but def root the phone and put a custom kernel and rom on the phone, there will be a big difference.

I find that Facebook often runs rampant and needs to be told to stfu constantly. Also, a custom kernel with aggressive undervolting will help too.

[Q] Flashing, roms, radio, etc?

I Rooted my Phone some time ago, i have installed some roms, some run good, some freezes my phone up, have remove my battery.
so what I need more info on, is should i do like I read about the Radio?, Kernel?, and then ROM?
What I show,

I have StraightTALK Sims, all DATA, SMS all working,
My Battery dose not last so long, 3 to 4 hrs, mostly not in use.
I seen a lot of post talking about this rom, and that rom works the best. or the battery last for 7+ hours.
My phone is not running a lot of apps, I even uninstalled my Anti-Virus.
I have to keep my phone on the Charger a lot. I even bought a New battery and same thing.

There's a apps you can download from the market- Battery Recalibration and Current Widget...with these 2 tools and a little knowledge of what running app/services are doing, you can track what's going on.
Or, you could just simply have a bad battery or a gooned-up flash (it happens).

On the contrary, battery calibration has been proved to be nothing more then just a peace of mind type of procedure and really not a huge benefit. My advice would be to get Current Widget and fully charge your phone. Unplug it and let it sleep for about 6-8 hours with current widget logging the mA drain (the log is an option in the app itself, you just need to enable it). After the 6-8 hours ( I normally do this when I sleep so I know the phone is not in use) check the log and see if there is any weird mA drain. weird would look something like

180ma
230ma
1ma
2ma
Normal would be:
1ma
1ma
4ma
5ma
1ma
You get the picture hopefully haha. If you have weird drain then best bet would be to full wipe and reinstall the rom and individually install your apps one at a time and monitoring the mA usage to see what apps cause the drain and what doesn't. You can also try new radios with their matching RILs and see if that helps. There are also apps like Juice Defender and Green Power that have been said to improve battery life up to 2x. Hope that helps.

let your phone die and then recharging it fully does nothing for abnormal battery drain. So in that regard the only thing you proved to yourself was that your phone can charge properly. Are you 100% sure you are running the proper radio for the ROM or have the matching RIL for your radio? I still think its an app running in the background that is causing your problem. Are you sure that you full wiped and reinstalled the rom. Then with each app you want, install one. wait for 30 minutes and allow current widget to log the mA activity. Check the log to be sure there are no crazy spikes in mA and proceed to the next app repeating the same process. I know its annoying but that's the only way to be sure that your apps aren't causing the drain.
Also consider turning off sync, which I've heard can be a battery drainer. Turn off wifi as well when need in range since the scanning for wifi causes battery drain as well.

I really don't know, when I first got the phone, I Rooted it and unlocked it.
I Do have straight talk Sim I have been using.
all I did was change the ROM( I Think).
with all the little problems I'm having, I was think I have a lot wrong with it!
So I was going to download a need ROM, I seen talk about Radios, or RIL, and ROMS.
so No I don't know If I have everthing right.
I wasl looking atRCMixHD 4G V3.4 ROM, and if I used it, what Radio and RIL would I need.
having Stright Talk Service, witch runs on ATT, with difference APN settings.
what Would I need?

Usually, the ROM has all the correct radios, RILs, kernels etc inside the ROM itself and you would only need to change if you had some need for a different radio, like if you got poor service where you live. Kernels are dictated by the ROM.

And that's why I asked. I need to set down one day and search, read, test,
On a different note.
All I can say is wow. 2,000,000 Roms and I still not know LOL. Thanks for all the info so far.

When you install a custom ROM it will include ROM, a certain RIL, and the kernel that the DEV has used with the ROM all in one package. The DEV will USUALLY let you know what the recommended radio should be to match the included RIL. You could flash it before or after you flash the ROM.
If you are having battery issues I would first start with a new battery. If you have already done that then flash a simple ROM for testing purposes. Stay away from highly tweaked and modified ROMs with a kernel set up for overclocking. I recommend juicy ROM from my sig. Install the 2.52 (R2) version which is still sense 2.5 and gingerbread 2.3.3. The ROM is flawless and you will get the best battery life than from anyother ROM. SEE how your battery lasts with it.
If you have your brightness set high, have many apps running in the background, are in an area where your signal is poor and is constantly lost, are syncing many accounts constantly, and you can't seem to put your phone down, then your battery will not last that long.

aospX rom problem
I installed the asopX rom and when my phone rebooted its stuck at a colorful animation screen. it's been doing it for a few hours... not sure if its still installing or stuck. Anyone ever experience this or know whats going on?

Its bootlooping (not good) ...I would suggest to boot back into recovery and wipe and check your md5 sum & reflash or redownload file if needed.

bootlooping isn't the end of the world. It only becomes an issue if you can't boot into HBOOT. You can boot into HBOOT by turning off the device and then holding the volume up and power button at the same time. You will then boot into HBOOT. From here your device will scan for a "PD98IMG.zip". I'm guessing since you don't know how to get into HBOOT then you've probably haven't flashed a radio so you shouldn't have a stray PD98IMG.zip on your sdcard. After it scans and doesn't find a a PD98IMG.zip you will be given a few options. One of which will be to boot into recovery. Do that. From there you can check the md5 (if you're using EXT4 recovery). If you want you can re-download another ROM and from recovery you can mount your SDcard so you can put the new ROM on your sdcard and flash per usual.

My opinion
Seanscreams skyscreamsandwich rom has excellent battery life, I think if you try that with the new UCLA kernel you'll be very happy.

I have the stock Rogers ROM, rooted with CWM installed. I installed updated stock UCLA radio and kernel last week to get the benefits of latest kernel. Worked great but I've never been thrilled with battery life so Saturday I flashed Faux kernel v. 9m I think it was, on top of stock ROM and new updated stock radio.
Installed Set CPU to control new scalable speed kernel. I'm not easy to impress but it's absolutely unbelievable. Set to a conservative profile I've got blazing speed and 50% better battery life after 2 days use.
Go for it but don't do any playing before installing custom recovery ( CWM) and making a Nandroid backup.

The Skyrocket has respectable battery life, consideeing its LTE and 4.5",screen. A ROM is not yoir solution to getting extended battery life out of your phone. While some ROMs are more battery friendly than others, there are better alternatives. Juice Defender seems to be really popular and successful at prolonging battery life.

Needless to say before any of that is done, you wanna make sure the following is done first:
1. Make sure your phone is rooted and have Clockwork mod setup.
2. Do a nandroid backup.

[Q] What's the best Official ROM with good battery life?

Sorry if you guys has been asked about this question for the nth times, I'm new to this phone and I'm a total noob in Android.
So, here's my scenario, I have this Samsung Nexus S Version M200 running currently in CM 10.1 Nightly firmware. It's good as far as I'm using it but I'm having a problem with the battery life. I usually charge it 2 times a day. What I do with my phone? Mostly play games and it will only last 3-4 hours max play then I have to charge it again. But to summarize it it will not last a whole day even with normal use, minimal games.
The question now is:
Should I go to Official ROM?
If yes, which version with long lasting battery with GPS and other services on and playing games max?
If no, should I stick to CM 10.1?
If no with CM 10.1, which ROM should I install?
Thanks in advance, I actually have a lot of questions since I'm so curious and want to know more about this phone, but I'll just add it later.

Anyways, there won't be that huge of a battery life difference between most of these roms, it just depends how your settings are and how you are using your phone. I've tried most of the roms for the NS and I can tell you my team favorites are CM 10.1 Stable with Marmite 8.7 Bigmem kernel and JellyShot with the same kernel. Those two have given me the best stability+performance+speed+battery life combo.
The way you setup your cpu governer and i/o scheduler as well as some developer settings and a few more things can definitely make an impact on increasing battery life. Here's how I have my phone setup:
ROM: CM 10.1 Stable
Kernel: Marmite 8.7 Bigmem
Governer: During the day I use Smartassv2 with 100 min 1000 max, during the night I switch it to On Demand with 100 min 800 max
I/O: I find deadline to be the best and cfq to be the 2nd best especially if you are a person that has multiple apps in use its best for multitasking but if you're just doing one thing at a time (Youtube vids etc) stick with deadline
Developer: I set the 3 animation options all to OFF.
For your phone settings, if you don't need all those sync options on I'd turn them off, same goes for auto-sync/background data (you can find these options in data usage).
There are apps out there like Greenify which are great for saving you extra battery life, it puts apps to sleep when they're not in use. Try the free version it works great.
Lastly everything starts on how you first install your rom, I'd recommend a completely clean install. I use Philz Touch Recovery its free and you can find it here. The way I install roms is:
1. Wipe Data/Factory reset
2. Wipe Cache
3. Go to Mounts & Storage and format these: System, Data, Cache, Boot
4. Go to Advanced and wipe: Dalvik then Fix Permissions
5. Install order: Rom first, Gapps second, Kernel last
6. Reboot
Thats about all the tips I have. Sometimes your phones battery just doesn't cut it, some people claim to get 5 hours screen time etc, but I never get that kind of amazing battery life I think my battery just sucks. But mess around with those 2 roms I suggested and those settings, see if you like it. Goodluck.

1. How can I change my Kernel?
2. If I can change it, will I lost my data? What are the results? Because I've done a little search about Marmite and I've read it's good.
3. What's Governor? LOL Sorry, I'm total newbie. I don't get it. And the Developer? Haha!
4. If I do a clean install what would happen to my data? Does all my app data will be lost?

1. Well to change kernel you first need to download the proper one, get the "cm" version of Marmite that means its for Cyanogenmod based roms. To install it you need to use a recovery. Something like Clockwork Recovery its free you can get it by installing the "Rom Manager" app. Basically recovery is a thing you boot into its kind of like safe mode for PC's, but this will let you install Roms/Kernels, etc.
2. You won't lose your data by flashing a new kernel but you will lose your data if you wipe data through the recovery mode. If you really want to keep your data and apps you can use an app like Titanium backup it backs up everything for you to install later after wipes.
3. CPU Governor is a just how your CPU is going to be functioning. There are a bunch of different settings you can choose from. Some for example: Conservative (this saves battery by using less cpu power it will clock at lower frequencies) also On Demand (this setting tells the cpu to only work based on the demand so if you're phones not doing anything it will clock to the lowest speed you set the "min" value to but if you're playing a game or something it will scale up towards your "max" value)
Developer options can be found after you go to "About Phone" and click on build number 7 times, then you can access developer options from the main settings menu. These options let you do a few cool things.
4. Yes a clean install would wipe your data and apps, its like a brand new phone. There are some apps like I mentioned "Titanium backup" which can help you save your apps and data, google about that to learn more if you're interested.
And no problem, glad to help, everyone is new at everything at some point. You're learn that flashing roms and kernels will become repetitive you will always want to try new ones and then it just becomes so easy to do.

On most android devices Jelly Bean consumes twice as much battery as compared to Ice Cream Sandwich. You might want to consider downgrading if battery life is your top priority.

lol this is absolutely not true. I get relatively the same battery with jelly bean as I used to on ICS.

So, if I want to clean install everything? What should I do? What are the things I need to consider? What are the things I need to backup?
I have an existing ClockWorkRecovery v6.0.0.6, is it okay to use this? Or should I update it?
What are the risk in updating ClockWorkRecovery?

Most android users complain that they are experiencing noticeably more battery drain after they upgrade to JB.

First of all we are here at the nexus S forum it doesnt matter what the whole population is experiencing in regards to jelly bean, we dont have any serious battery life difference on the nexus S with ICS and jelly bean.
And I doubt any phone has DOUBLE the battery life difference.

But there is still noticeable battery life difference. I said 'on most android devices' jelly bean consumes twice as much battery as compared to ICS. My point here is that ICS can be considered if battery life is the top priority of a certain user.
Google Search denies your statement that this is "absolutely not true".

I got friends who own these devices: Karbonn A9+, Innos D9, Galaxy Note
Their batteries last for a little less than a day on normal use (wifi, sms, some gaming, etc.) as compared to 2+ days when they were on ICS. They don't complain that much because they like the smoothness of JB.

Sorry I have had many friends upgrade from ICS to JB on a variety of phones and no one complained about a serious battery life decrease.

I usually charge it 2 times a day. What I do with my phone? Mostly play games and it will only last 3-4 hours max play then I have to charge it again. But to summarize it it will not last a whole day even with normal use, minimal games.
The question now is:
Should I go to Official ROM?
If yes, which version with long lasting battery with GPS and other services on and playing games max?
If no, should I stick to CM 10.1?
If no with CM 10.1, which ROM should I install?

Just stick with the stock rooted rom for a month . Then you may flash new roms ..
The battery life is the same for ICS and JB .. But standby battery backup has been improved in jellybean...
But free ram vaialable will be lower in JB after flashing gapps package..
The three roms which I will suggest you are 1. Xenon HD stable(mix of slimbean,aosp,cm,pa) 2.Slimbean(sleek and black) 3.Carbon Rom
And use Marmite kernal non cm version for the above roms.. Alrthough Slimbean comes with latest marmite kernel..

Few options that saved battery life:
1. If you have apps that turn on GPS when the app is not running (like Life360), its best to turn off the GPS when you are not using it. Power Control widget helps a lot here.
2. Turn off Wifi & mobile network Location under Settings->Location Access.
3. Turn off Google Now
4. Turn off Background Location Reporting for Google Maps.
5. Uninstall Facebook app. (the messenger app is ok)
My phone have gone from being left with 20% after 8 hours to around 60% after I have done the above. If you are having an old phone, consider getting a new battery as well, since the stock battery would probably be at least 2 years old by now.

I am using Nexus S with lastest CM 10.1 (release)
You might want to avoid :
Google now
Localisation (using GSM or Wifi)
Facebook : it is such a RAM eater it will have side effects on all the others apps, better use web app or Friendcaster
If you don't mind, de-activate 3G when you don't need it
Generally speaking, avoid large memory footprint apps, use opera (classic) as your daily browser and tune notifications.

Best one that I tried is Marmite kernel.
Also you need have a task manager to kill programs/
Also It's DisableService application is a must.

Call quality and battery life
Thank you for making the SuperLiteRom. I've had a couple of issues with it. The call volume is very quiet, to the point that I have to use speakerphone to hear anyone. Also, I don't remember battery life being so terrible with stock 4.4.2. Even with the same apps that i'm using now.
Has anyone else had these issues?

Flash on stock rom slot and make clean flash.

I wiped the device, did a clean OS install from Odin with NE1. Flashed SuperliteRom over the stock rom slot. Still very quiet audio. I don't know what went wrong.

Is it ok with stock rom? You are the only one who have this issue!
Maybe your device speaker need some clean.

just want to say thank you to mohammad.afaneh for making this superlite ROM. at first i also noticed more battery drainage than usual. i did some reading in the main thread and put the ROM in the stock slot. i ran a battery calibration app and i didnt really see a difference with drainage so i decided to buy a new battery, as mine was around a year old. bought a 7200mAh from amazon. i get at least 3 days on a full charge. idk if the battery calibration app helped with the new battery but it is nice having a few days of charge with moderate to heavy usage. keep up the good work!

Issues with SuperLiteRom on VZW Galaxy S3
Thanks for throwing this guide together! I was able to get this set up correctly.
However, like others, I am having 2 major issues.
Battery is draining incredibly fast. I initially installed on Slot1, but reinstalled on the Stock slot after experiencing poor battery life. It is still dying at an alarming rate (33% in an hour with minimal use). Very unfortunate because I thought this may help my phone's performance by removing bloatware, but something is running strong in the background. Like others, I see Android system using the most power.
Videos lag. Youtube, recorded videos, everything I try to watch freezes and stutters.
Please let me know if anyone has found a solution for these items. I was excited to get ride of the Verizon bloat, but it feels like this was a big mistake. Without solutions to these issues, I don't think this process should be recommended to users seeking to improve their phone experience. At least the disclaimer should be updated.
Its unfortunate now because I'm not sure how to get back to the way I was, now that I overwrote the stock OS.

For those who have installed this rom on the stock rom slot. By doing this it seems to somewhat increase battery life vs a different slot... the known issue. But by putting the new rom in the "stock" location, does that no longer allow you to flash back to stock? In other words locked in this rom. I am finally taking the plunge to put a rom on mine but am becoming more hesitant for the battery issues described here. How bad is it also?
I'm use to my bionic and that safestrap version where I could toggle roms all day long if wanted.

First, you still able to flash back factory stock rom even you used the stock slot location. You must uninstall safestrap first. Currently I'm using litrom and my battery is pretty good. Here how I flashed mine. Installed safestrap, boot to safestrap, wipe cache/davik cache/system, then flash superliterom, once boot up install glowing battery saver, set this on extreme mode and you should be set. Let it run for at least 2 days and you should see the battery is pretty good. If I don't touch my phone, the drain rate is 9+ hrs for 10%. I can't compare screen on time because it depended mainly on each individual using their phone, like if you watch movies or only making phone calls it would sucks less power than if you surfing the internet (not reading articles) or playing games.

Launchers for SUPERLITEROM
1) I love this nimble ROM. Thanks, again.
2) I've flashed to Stock ROM slot. WiFi is muuuch better, but still a little unstable.
3) Does anyone have a favorite launcher that will work with this? Running KK 4.4.2 (I've got Go Launcher EX, which is cool, but the counter stinks.)
4) Is there a recommended replacement for S-voice? I was getting used to that weird android Galaxy lady finding stuff for me while I was driving.

Without a doubt I'd say nova launcher, I've had it for well over two years with nova prime and it's quick and simple yet customizable. I've tried nearly every launcher including go launcher which was my first launcher I used on my old thunderbolt.
Best bet is S Voice, you can use google now also which is a good alternative

Yes it's a launcher, it will work with any rom, it's just like go launcher where as root isn't needed
