LG Update Tool now supporting "refurb" P999 devices - T-Mobile LG G2x

I was playing around with the LG Updater today trying to get it to update my P999DW unsuccessfully, but I noticed that the list of supported devices now shows the P999DWDU and P999DWP on rom v21e. So now people with the "refurb" units can update via the LG Update Tool if they can get it to work properly. Mine just hangs on 4% and the phone never reboots to software update mode.

I already updated my baseband to July 15 but if the department has a newer badeband I would update again since I updated with regular p999dw firmware on my dwp

so this is how you can tell if the replacement unit is a refurb? the sticker in the back will say p999dwdu? i finally got a replacement phone and I want to know if its a refurb.

Yes. Refurbs have the model number changed to P999DWDU or P999DWP. T-Mobile usually sends refurbs for warranty exchanges. They only send new units sometimes if exchanged very early after purchase or they are out of stock on refurbed units.

No. The sticker will still say P999DW. The only way (that I'm aware of) to tell, is to connect to the LG Updater tool. You don't have to actually DO the update...it will read your phone...then tell you if it's P999DW or P999DWP, etc.

My bad. I thought they changed the sticker also. At least the updater tool supports these units now and will update them to v21e.

*Gasp!* You couldn't possibly expect Tmo or LG to fork out all that extra cash for a NEW STICKER lol.
I'm a chicken, so I'm gonna wait until a few other DWP owners give that LG tool a go.
Can anyone tell me if updating the baseband is really worth it? What differences (if any) did you notice after updating? Thnx.

Ill find out tonight if this is a refurb...If it is, its going right back into the box and im keeping the one I have. I told them Im not accepting a refurb. Ive had this thing plugged into the charger for an hour and I have watched it reboot on its on 3 times....yea great replacement, If I call in and complain for another they will charge me another 20$ warranty fee.

Did it come to you as a whole/boxed phone? Or did it come in a white box w/o the back cover, battery, etc? If the latter, it's a refurb. If you got a full phone, in the G2X box, it might be a new one.
Since I was past my buyers remorse period on my last replacement, I got a refurb...which I really didn't want. But I must say, it's worked much better than the first TWO phones I got (which were both new phones). I'm not a refurb fan when it comes to any electronics, but so far this has been the best G2X I've used.

white box missing pieces and now im on 3 reboots and one sleep of death...not impressed!

So.what's the baseband on the v21e for dwp? I downgraded back to 2.2.2 and it still wont let me upgrade since it thinks I got v21e because of my baseband is the July 15

So its actually not a refurbished model based of the LG updater just states 999dw. However if its plugged in and charging it gets the sleep of death period. What a piece of crap.

When you press the power key it has no affect? When did TMO ship it. New replacements are coming with GB and that seems to have resolved most of the issues.

I used the LG tool on my refurb yesterday and was finally able to update. It has been working perfect so far. No sleep of death or rebooting (which i did have before). One definite improvement i've noticed is wifi calling, which I have to use at home because I don't get signal. Before update it was basically useless (static, cutting in/out, dropping calls). Now it works great, very clear.

Interesting info on warranty issues

So I just got off the phone with three different tmo reps. I received today my THIRD phone, which had worse screen bleed than the one I have now so I put it right back into the back it came in to return. The first two reps told me they could offer a mytouch 4g, I said no, and that to just return the phone I received today since it was worse than what I already have.
The third rep, tech support, told me those are known issues and are NOT covered under warranty (this is an LG announcement to tmo). Screen bleed and data connection loss were the issues we discussed. They are known by LG and tmo and aren't under warranty so the store should not have warrantied it. She did say to just return the phone I received today. She also said that exchanging the phone over and over will not help anything because it's a software issue and the update would fix all issues, but no idea when that update would be coming.
Another interesting thing, she mentioned a batch of phones went out on exchange to customers WITH the update, but that those are all gone and the rest are the normal 2.2.2. Yeah, so I got off the phone just as confused as before I called.
That is bs.... screen bleed is a defect and it should be fixed... LG is taking the easy way out and saying it is not covered under warranty
Sent from my G2x
Just curious, have you gotten a refund for any of your replacements that you have sent back?
I did the same thing you did. I asked for a replacement and it turned out to be even worse than my original g2x. That was May 4th. I still haven't gotten a refund for the money I had to 'deposit' while I had both phones.
Every time I call they give me the runaround, saying that they just processed it or they just received it, or some other BS.

noooooooooooo screen bleed is a software issue and it will be fixed with the OTA
i say we go to tmo and lg corporate offices with pitchforks and torches and demand an update and fixes no more of this crap ok who's with me.
I did not have to deposit anything when I warrantied the phone(s). I just went to a store, told them I have problems, and they warrantied it without question. This, according to tech support, is not supposed to happen because of the service announcement that LG sent to tmo.
Yes, the tech support rep swears the update will fix the screen bleed and data connection issues. I asked about any recall, etc.. and she didn't know what I was talking about. The word "Sensation" never came up in any conversation either, only the MyTouch 4G, I said hell no.
I thought I had a near perfect phone but I just noticed that there is dust under my screen... and I don't want to risk a replacement but DAMN it's annoying me...
Maybe after they get new (fixed hardware) batches with the gb update on them I will ask for a replacement.

How can screen bleed be software related?

I'm getting a little nervous with all this recall talk...I really don't like any other phone tmo offers and my only other option would be to go back to the Iphone which I didn't want to do but oh well.
I'm also interested in knowing what was said for tmo to agree to swap out for the sensation. I've gone through 2 exchanges and I'll be damned if I will go through 2 more.

Also would like to know.
After being treated like crap with customer service, I wrote a well worded letter and sent it to all the big wigs at TMobile corporate figuring I would finally get the sensation for free (if they valued my service). I asked for the sensation at no charge or for them to let me out of my contract since they continue to give me a faulty phone. An exec called me today and stated that they would accept the $50 upgrade but they would do no more. She also said they would not let me out of contract. When I mentioned filing a complaint with the BBB, she said she looks into all complaints from them and that she would not be calling me back and the offer would no longer be valid!!! Now that is guts. No wonder they have been slipping in service year after year......
Should I just pay the $50 for the sensation?

I just told the guy that called me that I was very unhappy with the way that Tmo has addressed the situation. I told him that the Mytouch 4g wasn't comparable and that I felt offended by being offered that phone. After that he went on to tell me why customer service didn't exchange for the sensation and what was going on with LG and Tmo regarding this phone. He then asked me if I would like the Sensation. I replied yes that was the only comparable phone. He then told me he'd send it out with no charge and that was it.

That is NOT how my experience went. You got lucky.
Obviously it boils down to the rep you end up with...as soon as you hear something you don't like, conveniently get "disconnected" and call back

Replacement just came with 2.3.3 and July basband on it

I almost did not notice it and was going to flash CMW, and restore a nandroid - lol.
I am going to mess with it a bit and then flash recovery.and do a nandroid of it.
As I understand it, I can then flash a rooted nandroid over it and I will have root, as one-click root would not work (yet).
UPDATE: Had a bad moment with it - could not get into nvflash mode by holding vol up/down. it took the 4th USB port on second computer to get it recognized. Flashed CMW, flashed the rooted 2.3.3 OTA - have got root.
Now only need morfic and/or faux to release a kernel for it. However, probably will be back on EB and CM7 soon in any case.

TMo of course.
LG had earlier only offered a refurb only if after an inspection from GOD, they decided to authorize it.
If you got a replacement phone without a battery and rear cover then its going to be a refurb like the one I got from Tmobile. When you hook up your phone to the LG Mobile Update program your phone will be a DWP not DW. Seems they are recycling phones sent back to them. I was offered a third phone, but I refused.

The model number in the battery case says DW, so other then going to the LG Update (which bricked my previous pone) how else can it be determined?
Mine also said DW on the phone until I connected it to the LG Mobile Update. That's where I found out it was actually refurbished DWP. I don't know any other way to verify it is a refurb other than that method. Also, when I called Tmobile yesterday regarding my current issues, they acknowledged to me that they send out refurbs replacements only. The tech support employee I spoke with said "most of them are found to have nothing wrong with them when we check the phones people send us". LOL! I told her you are just playing musical chairs with the phones sent to you.
keeping my current problems suddenly seems a whole lot better...

I hooked it up and it shows DW after I connect. Possibly they sent a new one with the update, as updating with LG tool had caused the replacement?
anyone counting on the lgupdate tool to give reliable information is misled. i got mine on day one. phone says dw. lgtool says dwp. i'm not sure who started all this dw/dwp stuff, but i really don't think it means a thing. dwp might just simply be second batch. who confirmed these to be refurbs,or newer/better units?
And for the record, connecting your phone to the LG tool just to have it read the model number will result in a 0% probability of bricking your phone. Unless you hit it with a brick while it's reading.
So there's nothing to be afraid of, and takes only like 15 seconds to find out, which is less than the time it takes to post here.
And furthermore...refurb or NOT, my replacement model (which LG tool reads as DWP, but has DW printed under batter cover and under battery) is MUCH better than my first G2x. It has almost no screenbleed, no screen separation, far less random reboots, better battery life, and gps lock is within 5 seconds now. So if it is, indeed, a refurbished model, they must have refurbed it pretty darn well. If this matters, my original phone SN started with 104, and this replacement starts with 106...seems most likely manufactured more recently than the earlier phone.

SuperOneClick Fail!
I just received mine a couple hours ago. I hopped on the free G2X offer of last week. SuperOneClick fails to root. I was mortified I'd bricked this new phone; but, after killing SuperOneClick (stuck on Step 6 as apparently happens to all), the device seems fine. Charging the battery overnight and then I may try your method of NVflash. Coming from OG Droid.

Which rooted ROM? xboarder's? I just read that entire 35 page thread and some seem to be getting reboots reintroduced. Since mine is currently having no problems whatsoever. I may try to NVflash and then try the brute force approach delineated here:

But, I need to read up on it more.
For now, I just want to Nandroid this installation so I can always go back to it. I think the NVflash will give me that option, right?

I loaded a rooted 2.3.3 stock OTA from a thread in the development section. Since it is stock, you can decide what you keep and whet you freeze or delete. After flashing over the 2.3.3 on the device - root was back.

Call TMo and tell them others are getting them with 2.3.3 and July baseband. and you want the same. Especially if you bricked you last one with the LG Updater, you should not have to go down that path again if you can simply get a replacement with it on already.
In any case - insist on a replacement with the latest ROM and baseband on it. I have noted a very significant GPS connection time improvement even with CM7 ROM's (they had been like watching grass grow when waiting on the GPS).

My Warranty Replacment Experience

Well, to start off the new year right, my original G2x stopped sending/receiving SMS messages under any circumstances, whether it was on wifi, 4G, Edge, or GPRS. I unrooted it and got a new SIM card, still have the same issue (according to the person at the T-Mobile store, I had a "2G SIM card in a 4G phone.") They suggest a whole new phone, and I agree.
One day later with overnight shipping, I get my new G2x, and the first thing I notice is the LG branding in place of the T-Mobile branding. Ignoring that, I turn on the phone only to see dead pixels everywhere, I don't understand how they could have even sent this one out. I call up customer care and they make me go through the whole troubleshooting procedure, and they decided to send me another one. They also told me if this next one had problems, they'd send me a replacement phone of a different model.
So I'm getting a new G2x sent to me tomorrow. I hope this next one works just fine, or I'll have to get a new phone. Also, what replacement phones do they usually offer for the G2x?
I have been through this process, I'm on my third G2x and CC told me if I ha e anymore problems with my G2x then they will give me a different phone.e... When I asked what them replacement model would be the CC Rep told me they could only exchange it for the Sidekick 4G and I told them I would just deal with the G2x and any problems it my have

On the g2x if you hold the power and down button, it should just do a master reset, it's not like HTC where it takes you to recovery (correct me if I'm wrong) but just to make sure your unrooted try to download and use a app that requires root

[Q] Sent T-Mobile a Rooted Phone

Since I was having problems with my phone, and it was still under their warranty, I requested a replacement, and when it was sent to me I was careful (or so I thought) to restore the stock recovery as well as the stock rom. After some time I realized that the "stock" ROM to which I had restore the phone I sent to T-Mobile was a modified Froyo build, rooted, with ROM Manager installed. So now I am worried that they may charge me some ridiculous fee because I sent back a device that was not fully stock. From logic or past experience, is TMO going to take any action?
I've sent in a g2x with cm7, didn't get billed or I don't even know if they found out. Could be different for you but that's my experience
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
honestly, most of the time the phone is never powered on again before its disassembled and refurbished.
and even if it is, nobody working on the floor is going to care either way.
most of the time, as long as the phone gets past the rep in the store, your fine.
I think the worst they could do if they found out, was just return it to you and say they're sorry. I don't think they'll just charge you without your approval. When I brought in my phone to check a problem with my data, the first thing the guy there did was check my phone's info like software and stuff to see if it's stock, otherwise they can't help you if it's a rooted phone.
Let us know what happens.

When I first got my g2x I returned it rooted and running a custom rom. They didn't even power it on they just checked it for water damage. You should be cool. No worries.

My phone short circuited while rooted and wouldn't turn on so I sent it in and am crossing my fingers lol
Success.
I got an email a couple of days ago saying T-Mobile had received my return. I called customer support under the pretense that my phone was acting weird and got her to check my warranty and it was fine. So as per what most people were saying, sending tmo a rooted phone will not root any warranties or incur any action from their part. Can't say much about phones sent directly to the manufacturer or the "premium handset insurance" people, which apparently managed through a third party company that states "any false information given will be processed accordingly."
On a side note, if you check tmo's support website, for most of their recent phones they attached a note explicitly stating an update to 4.0 in the future. For our beloved g2x, however, they wrote a long note stating how the recently leaked 21y update will be available starting may 14th, without any allusion to ICS. To me that just reinforces the notion that the only company that's more pathetic than a LG and nvidia combo is T-mobile and their haphazard and lethargic approach and contributions to today's smartphone community.
Not to say the update is completely useless, however; from my own experience it makes a tremendous improvement in battery life and wifi calling. Not to mention the fact that my phone does not shut down randomly in the middle of the night like it used to at times.

I bought my G2X on craigslist. It was already rooted and running CM7. I was getting a SIM error (later to be learned it was caused by ICS) I told TMo I bought it on craigslist already rooted. They still sent me a replacement at no cost.
I was charged a $20 warranty replacement fee, wtf! Anyone else? Are they pulling my leg here?

I was going through warranty replacement proceedings (cuz of screen bleeding, 3rd time) over the phone with a tmo rep and when he said there would be a $5 charge i flipped out (it's the principal, if they would send me a properly manufactured device i wouldn't need to keep returning their ****) he instantly volunteered to waive the fee. I'm about to call and get ANOTHER replacement. Eventually i will get them to replace it with a sensation.

My friend told me whatever phone the SIM card is in is covered by the insurance. That's the only thing I've heard. I didn't ask them (T-Mobile) any more questions.

Sweeet! Kudos for playing that one smart. I have sent back a few phones for warranty replacement to T-mo. My 1st was a modded HD2 that registered on their system (so they said) as running android. (it was running android, lol). 2nd was a G2x which was rooted and had a custom ROM. I know for sure they have no way of knowing without you volunteering the information yourself because they ask you have you modded the phone. If you say yes they may use that to deny you flat out but if not they probably will never be notified of such. Devices typically are wiped clean before ever being powered on.
*bump* yea I'm looking to send in my HTC one s for battery life issues and Im wondering fogs sane thing seeibg that I'm rooted and custom viper Rom installed.
had my phone off th3 charger for 50mins now and I'm at 82% Battery wtff

Non-functioning display (works now) vs "Like New Certified Replacement"

So what would you do in this situation. Last Friday my touch screen stopped working. I was getting emails, texts, phone calls (could answer on car BT only), etc. Stopped in Verizon(not a repair center), they pulled battery but no go. They ordered my a rplacement. On Saturday, in prep for new phone, I pulled SIM and SD out. Powered up, and the thing works perfect. Strange huh?
With that being said, what would you do? Keep current phone, which I bought brand new, or keep and use replacement? For some reason, I don't want the refurb. The verizon guy did say that they do send out brand new ones that have the same "Like New Certified Replacement" sticker on them. Anyway to tell if its brand new or refurb? It has an 8/8/12 date on it.
I'm not trying to be rude but, can you see any defects with the phone that make you think it's a refurb? Like scuffs or anything?
If not, that as far as you can tell it's new, why does it matter? If it looks exactly like a new phone than it may be new, or a very good condition refurb. Either way it's still an S3 in "new" condition

Someone once said that any 'void warranty' type stickers on a refurb, like they put over the screw heads, are a different color then they ones on a new unit. Not sure if that is true.
It looks like its new. For some reason I feel if its a refurb, it was defective and then fixed and that is worse than my brand new I bought. Although mine seems to be defective as well.

Dude most cln new replacements this early in the game are brand new devices. Verizon has these phones in stock use common sense the phone has been out for around 2 months now millions are out there there are not enough refurbs to replace everyones defective devices. That being said even if it is a true cln device they are usually perfectly acceptable. If you have problems with it swap it for another.

use anycut to make a shortcut to RTN that will till you if it's a refurbished phone

Thanks for the info "DUDE", but I'm well aware how new the phone is. That doesn't mean its not a refurb.

Do you want to keep your used one that now works or accept a used that that works. Seems like an equal trade off to me.
How much faith do you have that your fix will stick?

I don't think the anycut app works for the RTN because I have a CLNR from Vzw and it says it wasn't reconditioned

I recently got a Refurb phone which fixed my radio issues. I'm 99% sure its brand new. You don't get a battery or a back cover and that's the only difference.

Because as stated this phone has just recently been released. There are not enough returns they simply have new devices in stock to replace defective ones. What you got was a brand new device. How are people still not getting this?

some people are getting replacements though, I know mine is. (when the sticker under the battery with the IMEI/MEID is all bent like it was 1/2 pulled off, and replaced on, its a sign...)

"Bra" here seems to be the authority on this topic...j/k
I guess at the end of the day, if there was a way of knowing what they sent me brand new its a no brainer. It looks like there is no way of really knowing for sure, which is no real big deal. My current phone seems to be working fine since that strange incident, but having it flake out last Friday was a nightmare. Having this for work email when out of the office is critical, so I should really just swap it to avoid the incident again.
Anycut will make short cut to veiw rtn this is what you'll see, under reconditioned mine says no

So I booted up the phone they sent me, and it says "safe mode" in the lower left corner of the screen. Did some app updates, rebooted and "safe mode" is gone. Any thoughts now on refurb or brand new? I did not boot mine original phone up myself to see if "safe mode" was there on that one. It was done by sales guy at verizon.
Now the new phone is acting really strange. While doing a google backup restore of all my apps, the phone became unresposive. Just did a battery pull, which was required, now working ok.
Could my problem be my sim card? Original problem was resolved when I booted without sim card.
i told you how to check
About 3 weeks ago I got fed up with my ridiculously poor radio and called CS. In the end they sent me a "certified replacement". My certified replacement was 100% certainly a refurb. All the micro antenna covers were missing. The Serial number sticker under battery was two times the size of original and looked like it had been printed on a 1980's dot matrix printer, and best of all, it had exactly ZERO wifi reception, probably the reason it went in in the first place. After fighting with these ignorant A$$hats at CS for another few hours, and being told a software update would repair it, I finally got them to send me another. The CS told me the same BS seen above, about how these aren’t really refurbs yet. I'm guessing the bulk of them aren't, but there sure as heck are some out there, and if mine is any example of their level of technical refurb prowess, then I would be very leery and fully test the device before accepting it as good. I ended up sending them the refurb back in it's same box. Third phone at least worked, seems new, and has marginally better radio so I guess I'm sticking with it.
Later,
Jason
