Hi all, Just as the title states.
Im choosing between those 2 phones. The Galaxy S and the HTC Desire HD.
BTW, im from Singapore and currently the HTC Desire HD is not out yet on singapore carriers. Moreover, the Galaxy S MIGHT be cheaper than HTC Desire HD as its an older phone (i guess)..
Im upgrading from my Omnia 2(winmo "FTW!") and want to change to an android device that can provide me with the maximum android experience without lag.
IMO. i think that touchwiz 3.0 is laggy sometimes. (Correct me if im wrong)
and i LOVE HTC sense UI.
So why am i asking you guys this question?
These are the factors that is holding me back from making a choice.
***Note these are only MY OPINIONS.
[they can change depending on ur answers =D]
Galaxy S-----
the good
-Super Amoled Screen only =/
the bad
-needs to be rooted
-touchwiz 3.0...
HTC Desire HD-------
the good
-4.3inch
-HTC sense
-integration with htcsense dot com
the bad
-Noobish LCD screen...
-Heavy??? i guess...
So guys pls write down your views on these 2 phones so that i can make a choice.
THANK YOU.
Just got myself Desire HD and I'm loving it - it's really a great device, however there are some downsides:
- speaker is really bad and quiet. Would love if it had speaker as good as n95 (I know, impossible considering the thickness of desire hd)
- the body of the phone is top quality, except battery and sim covers - really cheap plastic.
- battery life isn't as good as some other smartphones on the market, but soon we will be able to get batteries with slightly more "juice" (~1500 vs ~1200) - same size.
- screen doesn't have the same "wow" factor as galaxy s.
Other than that its really good, I'm happy with my choice and, as long you remember all the downsides you won't regret choosing desire hd.
For more info look for other topics on this subject.

Hi, just a curiosity. I came from the Desire HD (rooted and bla bla bla) and I'm wondering where is the difference between this Sensation and the DHD. I do not feel it really different... I tought it was double faster or something like that, but exept the resolution I cannot find great changes..
Build quality is better (for me, at least).
It's much more compact, easy to hold.
Sense 3.0!
Instant Capture on the camera
HTC Watch
It's dual core
Haven't got mine yet so I can't comment on it just yet, so let me just refer you to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1110350

Would like to respond to these:
1. Both are the same ssize screens.. so other then ergonomics..
2. Desire HD has sense 3.0
3. Instant cap will be ported
4. HTC will be ported..
5. Dual core.... sure? I guess?
Edit: Good phone. But good upgrade...?
I'd say no.
if you are coming from the Regular Desire then I'd say upgrade for sure. From Desire HD? No.
Use the topic above ..no need to create an extra topic and yes it is definetly worth an upgrade

1. Screen size doesn't matter in this case. The Sensation is a lot more streamlined and it's thinner width ways than the DHD, due to 16:9 screen. The DHD is also much more rectangular than the Sensation; the Sensation has curved edges, like the Nexus One. Thus, the Sensation feels quite a bit smaller than the DHD.
2. DHD has Sense 3.0, but it's not official. It always feels better when it's official!
3. Don't know about Instant Capture being ported; it may be something to do with the hardware. I believe Instant Capture is done by continually auto focussing.
4. Like Google Movies, I don't know if Watch will work on a rooted device (due to copyright restrictions, etc) let alone on a device it wasn't made for, i.e. DHD.
5. Dual core is awesome
whats the battery life like on the sensation with daily use? Im thinking of upgrading from my hd2, i love the android roms for hd2 and how hackable it is, but battery life is crap and i dont want an ugly double size battery.
Thanks

I upgraded from the HD2 to the Sensation; albeit I was using a crappy Nokia for 3 weeks in between. My opinion is that the Sensation is better, battery feels like it lasts twice as long and once the small bugs are sorted (i.e phone restarting occasionally when using the camera and the flash is required) I cannot see a reason why anyone would not want to upgrade to this.
As for the camera flash causing the crash, I have uninstalled App Killer and it hasn't happened since so maybe a work around until an official update is released.
Thanks, im onto vodafone now, my hd2 has been ace but i cant live with the crap battery any longer. Here is hoping reception on the sensation is fixed as well. Vodafone had told me i would have to wait a month longer for an upgrade but im going to press hard and see how i get on!
As title suggest, has anyone upgraded to a Sensation from a Desire, If so what are your opinions/views?
I have and im slightly underwhelmed by the Sensation Maybe I was expecting too much but the only advantage i can see is a larger screen and a faster phone.
Maybe i need to give it more time?
How about a massive improvement on internal storage?

Hey, nice to see you again 325i
Yes, there are quite a few of us who came from Desire.
I felt the same as you, underwhelmed. After some time you realise, yes, you were expecting too much. Sensation is a better phone, but not THAT MUCH better. Desire is one of the most supported phones by devs, and it had s**t load of ports which is great. Sensation is not going to he like Desire unroll there are a lot newer phones out, like another 10 months I reckon, with newer sense version. Sensation is going to have a lot longer life than Desire due to hardware being on par with newer phones longer than Desire was. Quad core is not going to change much. And I'm sure that Senny will support next Android version easily, and probably one after.
Just enjoy using it, it a good phone, but far from groundbreaking as much as Desire was.

What were you expecting?
I did the same as you some time ago. The desire was very stable and the sensation has severel minor problems but the adequate on board memory of the sensation was, in itself, enough for me!
Hi, I've just got a Sensation xe. I came from a HTC HD2, then a Desire, then a Desire HD. As I always pass the handsets to my completely non tech' savvy family who are not delicate with their technology, I've never rooted / flashed and always remained on stock just in case of warranty requirements. I love the extra on board memory of the Desire HD / Sensation Xe and look at each phone as step in the right direction. They're always familiar and do everything I could possibly want of them (except last 2 or 3 days on the battery) so I'm more than happy with both build quality (and warranty work by HTC, can only speak form experience but very slick when I needed to use it) / Sense etc. The only thing and it is minor, is I just wish I could get the Desire HD keyboard onto my stock sensation xe and despite what all the figures suggest, the screen in the xe definately "seems" skinnier than my Desire HD.
Evolution not revolution as they say and each small step is one in the right direction. (For me anyway). Each to their own but I can understand your feelings if you expected to go from Space shuttle to USS Enterprise!
Yeah dude, I get what u're saying. the desire is the same sort of device as the sensation, can run the same software. So not much of a scope for improvement in the user experience.
Let's see what's up for grabs in 18 montths when my contract expires.
I came from a Desire too, my XE has plenty of internal storage and a larger screen which is good. On the down side though, my phone signal is pants in comparison.

Thanks for the reply, as you say hopefully ill get used to it.
Cheers
I also came from the Desire and feel a bit underwhelmed. At first the biggest disappointment was the screen, that seemed washed out compared to the Desire's amoled screen. After about seven months with the Sensation these things are a bit of a let down:
- There is not enough RAM. Ever so often I get the white htc screen when pressing the home button. Anyone know if ICS / Sense 3.5 will consume even more RAM?
- The phone hangs from time to time - mostly while installing / updating apps ( Also RAM related?).
- Radio signal seems to be very unstable, jumping constantly between 1 - 5 bars ( even when on GSM only). It will also often skip between 3g and H, which never happened with the Desire (always either E or H).
Another issue is that there is a spot (~1x2 mm) at the center of the screen that is brighter than the rest. It's most visible on black/dark/medium dark screens, but also appears as a grey speck on a white screen. Its not visible on light grey background.
I'm consider sending the phone back for service/repair, but I'm not keen on restoring all my apps and settings either.
My friend got a Sensation on upgrade and intended to sell it to get a new turbo for his scooby but made the mistake of playing with mine before selling it.Now he has sold his desire and says that the sensation is way better than his desire ever was.Runs games sooo smooth and being the XE he loves the headphones included
A 4 months ago i passed my Desire to my GF and get Nexus S... in 5 days I changed with Sensation.
I never expected something revolutionary .. but it`s better phone next generation.
With more memory, faster dual core CPU, more adequate battery life (I used my Desire as a second phone due the need of changing 2 batt`s during the office hours. Now my Sensation`s battery is lasting about 10 business hours... and 2 days @ weekend)
There is still a tons of ponts that can be upgraded.. but it`s a technology/pricing, marketing, sales .. and so on decision.

and you don't consider those as major improvements? i do
the Desire was sexy, the Sensation is sexier
I was like this :
lg optimus one > desire > incredible s > sensation.
liked incredible the most, but sensation is much better regarding the dual core and bigger display. better memory performace, better cpu and graphics
(ICS is also promissing)
I'm not so sure, in hindsight I think I was happier with my Incredible S. The 4" screen was just the right size for me, the camera was much better out of the box, although the HD recording was only at 20fps and not 30. But to be fair, what phone has a good HD camera?
I've just come from the trusty old desire to sensation.
Rooted, s-off, ICS Rom etc etc added within an hour of
it being delivered
First impressions are looking good, nice to have a bigger
screen, feels a lot snappier, internal memory is a major
plus point.
Sitting the desire and sensation side by side you can clearly
see its an 'upgrade' not in massive ways, but an upgrade
non the less.
I've just put the desire back to stock to send away for a fix
before selling it, and to be honest I hate what it was out of
the box, how people ranted and raved about the thing ill
never know.
Think ill be sticking to HTC from now on, the desire was a
workhorse, solidly built, unlike other brands which feel like
toys, the sensation feels the same in that regard, feels solid,
looks good, specs that will no doubt be fine for the next year
or maybe 2, seems to be a good community behind it, like the
desire.
Yes the sensation hasn't left me thinking wow, what great phone,
but let's face it, coming from the desire, which is still an excellent
phone and is still holding its ground, I really don't know what could
be added to a phone at this point in time that would give the same
'wow' factor as the desire gave.
I think the 'smartphone' has come of age, anything from now on will
just be gimmicky, and slight upgrades to this and that, I don't think
anything is going to be 'groundbreaking' in the next few years atleast.
So IMO desire > sensation is a worthy 'upgrade' when you look at the
whole package and compare it to what else is available at the moment.
But I guess only time will tell..
I also came from the desire, then desire HD, now the Sensation.
I will usually wait until about a few months after a new phone has come out and then buy it on ebay or craigslist, then sell my old one. It usually only ends up costing me about $40 to upgrade.
While I am really happy that there are ICS roms for the Sensation, i'm not as blown away as when I first moved from the desire to the desire HD.
I do prefer the quality of screen on the sensation compared to the dulled out desire hd, and love the multi touch capabilities of anything above the Desire. Though HTC will have to up their game a bit as my next phone will be coming with a contract renewal, and if samsung puts out anything like the Galaxy SII X again with a quad core I might be jumping ship.
Have you guys thought to switch to Sensation and what have kept you not to?
im pondering real hard between the two. the more i look the more i begin to like
bigger screen 4.3" 540 x 960
8mp camera
dual-core processor.
size is 59x115x11 mm vs 65x126x11 mm
for a future proof... is it worth 100e more investment. the sensation forum is flooded with problems tho.. desire s seems more happy customers. might be because they are sold lots more and only pissed ppl contact forums...
ps. phone buying seems to be harder than i thought
Sensation has problems with the audio
I don t think it s a good choice
In internet you can find newer phones low cost(-100-200€ )

If you want a bigger screen and hungrier battery eater - Sensation is good.
If you're comparing functionality - Sensation isn't enough of an upgrade.
I had this same problem. Now instead of an sensation I'm looking at the Galaxy Nexus.

Anyway, Pentile or not, the screen is still an upgrade from our phone. The clarity and sharpness will be much better.
Personally storage isn't a problem for me anymore. I don't mind the lack if SD card. I think Google wants it this way now, to standardise things and avoid complications, such as app data disappearing, slow apps (due to slow SD read/write speeds)
Having said that, Sammy released the SGS3 with a SD card ...

One V does not have a front camera or a removable battery.
In a couple of days, the desire s will be running the same software as the one v.
The only thing going for the one v is probably the better screen.
Otherwise, the ds is still better in so far as hardware is concerned.

Agree with enigmaamit, but also few more details:
HTC One V ---------Desire S
Screen ppi 252 PPI vs 251 PPI
Sharp display of text, images and video
Screen type TFT LCD vs Super-LCD
The Desire S's screen is fantastic, while the One V's is pretty average
RAM 512 MB vs 768 MB
The Desire S has a lot of RAM for running apps, but the One V is average.
One V, if you are not into rooting your phone.
It is new and has a higher probability of seeing the next major upgrade.
Desire S while being a good phone, the display is not as good as one v
Desire S is slcd while one v uses slcd 2, hence the display sharpness and much better image quality
While you will get sense 4A on desire S shortly, it purely boils down to what you like more.
Better display or a bit more ram, front camera or no front camera, root it or not to rrot it...
Your call

It´s your choice
Hi guys,
i have a desire S, it´s a very good phone with a big and great community (there are very much custom roms) but the one V has some interesting specs i think, only the RAM (512 one V - 768 desire S) and the front cam is better at our lovely desire S but:
- Bluetooth® 4.0
- Bigger internal space 4GB -> Desire S only 1GB
- Better akku 1500mAh -> Desire S 1450mAh i think it doesn´t matter
- Screen is even better
so it´s your choice great community, front cam and more RAM or bluetooth 4, better screen, more internal space and android 4 with Sense 4 directly from HTC
Edit: you are right it's only sense 4 light...

One V doesn't have Sense 4, it has a lite version of sense, which is pretty boring, no leap view, no home screen editing (there's only 5 and you can't even move them). Also it's 2D just like Sense 2.1, the widgets are less than Desire S, and lock screen, is horrible, it only shows weather in the morning. But Desire S will get (probably, I hope it will) Sense 4 full in the future.
Swiped with HTC Trace on Desire S using Endymion 3.5 with HTC Sense 3.5
I also have an iPad 2 iOS5.1.1, Jailbroken.
Regarding internal space - with about 80 apps installed I still have above 500mb left, so imho that's not an issue at all. I wouldn't trade off front cam for extra 3gb of space. Keep in mind, that heavy apps (like games) usually can be moved to sd card.

Maybe as a non-user of Desire S, i could give a more just suggestion.
The HTC One V, though newer and have a more updated software, its specs are not as good as the Desire S. But the upcoming sense 3.6 update for the Desire S would probably be the last update for this line, while for One V, more updates are sure to come. But, if you root and all, Desire S is the way to go.

I suggest that DS is better.
The most of One V advances are low-weight and maybe the screen (very subjective).
Also I don't thik that HTC will make major upadates for it. Yesterday I installed ICS CyanogenMod9 on my DS and it seems to be perfect
