Is there a way to make the icons on the notification bar change to look like the icons on the stock android on the mytouch 4G without rooting it?

this existed in cyanogen 6.1, the signal bar is replaced with the -dBm reading. but it has not yet been ported to cyanogen 7.0 as of now. hopefully its coming soon, but nobody knows yet. this needs root, and no app will be able to change the framework as far as i know. it needs to be in a custom ROM.
So i am still new to the whole flashing of new roms to my phone. I am wanting to change the colors on the notification bar and change like the battery symbol to line a percentage logo if that makes sence. could someone help me a bit. Do i need to install a diff rom other than stock. or can i change it now that it is rooted

My Evo has many nice ROMs, and the notifications are only there when you need them. The Nexus seems to have the notification bar on at all times - rendering the usable screen real estate smaller than it needs to be...
Before I just start trying every single ROM, does anyone know about this?

I am trying to theme the 3g icons on my X and am doing it about the same way as Froyo. But in the SystemUI apk instead of framework. But for some reason they don't show up in the notification bar. Data and everything works fine but there is just no icon. I toggle data on and off and they come on for a little while but the are gone again. Anyone know why??
I've been scavenging the barren interweb for quite some time now and i've finally broken down. is there anywhere i can get a real 4G metamorph icon to match the orange gingerbread set off of droidpirates.com? I've almost fully changed my status bar to the orange set, but i simply cannot find a 4G metamoph file. I'm running a stock rooted LG esteem. Any help would be fantidlyastic
